This paper deals with the problem of remote estimation of the state of a discrete-time stochastic linear system observed by a sensor with computational capacity to calculate local estimates. We design an event-triggered communication (ETC) scheme and a remote state estimator to optimally calibrate the tradeoff between system performance and limited communication resources. The novel communication scheme is the time-varying thresholding version for the cumulative innovation-driven communication scheme in [1], and its transmission probability is given. We derive the corresponding remote minimum mean square error (MMSE) estimator and present a tight upper bound for its MSE matrices. We also show that by employing a couple of weak assumptions, the optimality problem becomes (asymptotically) exact and can be addressed in an Markov Decision Process (MDP) framework, which delivers optimal policy and cost in an algorithmic procedure. The simulation results illustrate the effectiveness of our approach.
This paper investigates the communication strategy for second-order multi-agent systems with nonlinear dynamics. To save the scarce resources of communication channels, a novel event-triggered communication mechanism is designed without using continuous signals among the followers. To get rid of the centralized information depending on the spectrum of the Laplacian matrix, a consensus protocol with updated coupling gains and an event-triggered strategy of interagent communication with updated thresholds are presented. To minimize the impacts of noise, only relative positions among agents are e…
We study the problem of periodic event-triggered control of interconnected port-Hamiltonian systems subject to time-varying delays in their communication. In particular, we design a threshold parameter for the event-triggering condition, a sampling period, and a maximum allowable delay such that interconnected port-Hamiltonian control systems with periodic event-triggering mechanism under a time-delayed communication are able to achieve asymptotically stable behaviour. Simulation results are presented to validate the theory.
Platoons of autonomous vehicles are being investigated as a way to increase road capacity and fuel efficiency. Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) is one approach to controlling platoons longitudinal dynamics, which requires wireless communication between vehicles. In the present paper we use a sliding mode observer to detect and estimate cyber-attacks threatening such wireless communication. In particular we prove stability of the observer and robustness of the detection threshold in the case of event-triggered communication, following a realistic Vehicle-to-Vehicle network protocol.

We study distributed estimation of a high-dimensional static parameter vector through a group of sensors whose communication network is modeled by a fixed directed graph. Different from existing time-triggered communication schemes, an event-triggered asynchronous scheme is investigated in order to reduce communication while preserving estimation convergence. A distributed estimation algorithm with a single step size is first proposed based on an event-triggered communication scheme with a time-dependent decaying threshold. With the event-triggered scheme, each sensor sends its estimate to nei…
Distributed state estimation is examined for a sensor network tasked with reconstructing a system's state through the use of a distributed and event-triggered observer. Each agent in the sensor network employs a deep neural network (DNN) to approximate the uncertain nonlinear dynamics of the system, which is trained using a multiple timescale approach. Specifically, the outer weights of each DNN are updated online using a Lyapunov-based gradient descent update law, while the inner weights and biases are trained offline using a supervised learning method and collected input-output data. The obs…

This paper studies the formation stabilization problem of asynchronous nonlinear multi-agent systems (MAS) subject to parametric uncertainties, external disturbances and bounded time-varying communication delays. A self-triggered min-max distributed model predictive control (DMPC) approach is proposed to handle these practical issues. At triggering instants, each agent solves a local min-max optimization problem based on local system states and predicted system states of neighbors, determines its next triggering instant and broadcasts its predicted state trajectory to its neighbors. As a resul…

This paper deals with solving distributed optimization problems with equality constraints by a class of uncertain nonlinear heterogeneous dynamic multi-agent systems. It is assumed that each agent with an uncertain dynamic model has limited information about the main problem and limited access to the information of the state variables of the other agents. A distributed algorithm that guarantees cooperative solving of the constrained optimization problem by the agents is proposed. Via this algorithm, the agents do not need to continuously broadcast their data. It is shown that the proposed algo…
Decentralized control systems are widely used in a number of situations and applications. In order for these systems to function properly and achieve their desired goals, information must be propagated between agents, which requires connecting to a network. To reduce opportunities for attacks that may be carried out through the network, we design an event-triggered mechanism for network connection and communication that minimizes the amount of time agents must be connected to the network, in turn decreasing communication costs. This mechanism is a function of only local information and ensures…
Wireless sensors and actuators offer benefits to large industrial control systems. The absence of wires for communication reduces the deployment cost, maintenance effort, and provides greater flexibility for sensor and actuator location and system architecture. These benefits come at a cost of a high probability of communication delay or message loss due to the unreliability of radio-based communication. This unreliability poses a challenge to contemporary control systems that are designed with the assumption of instantaneous and reliable communication. Wireless sensors and actuators create a …
Communication in parallel systems imposes significant overhead which often turns out to be a bottleneck in parallel machine learning. To relieve some of this overhead, in this paper, we present EventGraD - an algorithm with event-triggered communication for stochastic gradient descent in parallel machine learning. The main idea of this algorithm is to modify the requirement of communication at every iteration in standard implementations of stochastic gradient descent in parallel machine learning to communicating only when necessary at certain iterations. We provide theoretical analysis of conv…
This paper re-visits a multi-agent deployment problem where agents are restricted from requesting information from other agents as well as sending acknowledgments when information is received. These communication constraints relax the assumptions of instantaneous communication and synchronous actions by agents (request and response actions). In this paper, we propose a fully asynchronous communication aware solution to the multi-agent deployment problem that uses an event-triggered broadcasting strategy. Unlike all existing triggered solutions, our event-triggered broadcasting algorithm relies…
The paper considers the problem of multi-agent consensus in the presence of adversarial agents which may try to prevent and introduce undesired influence on the coordination among the regular agents. To our setting, we extend the so-called mean subsequence reduced algorithms with the aim to reduce the amount of communication via two measures: The agents exchange information in the form of ternary data at each transmission and moreover keep the frequency of data exchange low by employing self- and event-triggered communication. We will observe that in hostile environments with adversaries, the …
This paper proposes an event-triggered variational Bayesian filter for remote state estimation with unknown and time-varying noise covariances. After presetting multiple nominal process noise covariances and an initial measurement noise covariance, a variational Bayesian method and a fixed-point iteration method are utilized to jointly estimate the posterior state vector and the unknown noise covariances under a stochastic event-triggered mechanism. The proposed algorithm ensures low communication loads and excellent estimation performances for a wide range of unknown noise covariances. Finall…
We study the distributed average consensus problem in multi-agent systems with directed communication links that are subject to quantized information flow. The goal of distributed average consensus is for the nodes, each associated with some initial value, to obtain the average (or some value close to the average) of these initial values. In this paper, we present and analyze a distributed averaging algorithm which operates exclusively with quantized values (specifically, the information stored, processed and exchanged between neighboring agents is subject to deterministic uniform quantization…
This paper studies the decentralized online convex optimization problem for heterogeneous linear multi-agent systems. Agents have access to their time-varying local cost functions related to their own outputs, and there are also time-varying coupling inequality constraints among them. The goal of each agent is to minimize the global cost function by selecting appropriate local actions only through communication between neighbors. We design a distributed controller based on the saddle-point method which achieves constant regret bound and sublinear fit bound. In addition, to reduce the communica…
This paper addresses the output synchronization problem for heterogeneous nonlinear multi-agent systems with distributed event-based controllers. Employing the two-step synchronization process, we first outline the distributed event-triggered consensus controllers for linear reference models under a directed communication topology. It is further shown that the subsequent triggering instants are based on intermittent communication. Secondly, by using certain input-to-state stability (ISS) property, we design an event-triggered perturbed output regulation controller for each nonlinear multi-agen…
