The discovery of stellar-mass black holes (BHs) in globular clusters (GCs) raises the possibility of long-term retention of BHs within GCs. These BHs influence various astrophysical processes, including merger-driven gravitational waves and the formation of X-ray binaries. They also impact cluster dynamics by heating and creating low-density cores. Previous N-body models suggested that Palomar 5, a low-density GC with long tidal tails, may contain more than 100 BHs. To test this scenario, we conduct N-body simulations of Palomar 5 with primordial binaries to explore the influence of BHs on binary populations and the stellar mass function. Our results show that primordial binaries have minimal effect on the long-term evolution. In dense clusters with BHs, the fraction of wide binaries with periods >$10^5$ days decreases, and the disruption rate is independent of the initial period distribution. Multi-epoch spectroscopic observations of line-of-sight velocity changes can detect most bright binaries with periods below $10^4$ days, significantly improving velocity dispersion measurements. Four BH-MS binaries in the model with BHs suggests their possible detection through the same observation method. Including primordial binaries leads to a flatter inferred mass function because of spatially unresolved binaries, leading to a better match of the observations than models without binaries, particularly in Palomar 5's inner region. Future observations should focus on the cluster velocity dispersion and binaries with periods of $10^4-10^5$ days in Palomar 5's inner and tail regions to constrain BH existence.
Since the discovery of chemically peculiar stars in globular clusters in the last century, the study of multiple populations has become increasingly important, given that chemical inhomogeneity is found in almost all globular clusters. Despite various proposed theories attempting to explain this phenomenon, fitting all the observational evidence in globular clusters with one single theory remains notoriously difficult and currently unsuccessful. In order to improve existing models and motivate new ones, we are observing globular clusters at critical conditions, e.g., metal-rich end, metal-poor…
Deep stellar photometry of one of the most distant Galactic globular clusters, Palomar 3, based on frames taken with the VLT in Johnson-Cousins broadband V and Ifilters is presented, together with medium-resolution stellar spectroscopy in the central region of the cluster obtained with the CARELEC spectrograph of the Observatoire de Haute Provence and measurements of the Lick spectral indices for the integrated spectrum. Computations of the orbital parameters of Palomar 3 and nine Galactic globular clusters with similar metallicities and ages are also presented. The orbital parameters, age, me…
Palomar 5 is one of the sparsest star clusters in the Galactic halo and is best-known for its spectacular tidal tails, spanning over 20 degrees across the sky. With N-body simulations we show that both distinguishing features can result from a stellar-mass black hole population, comprising ~20% of the present-day cluster mass. In this scenario, Palomar 5 formed with a `normal' black hole mass fraction of a few per cent, but stars were lost at a higher rate than black holes, such that the black hole fraction gradually increased. This inflated the cluster, enhancing tidal stripping and tail form…
We report the discovery of tidal tails around the two outer halo globular clusters, Eridanus and Palomar 15, based on $gi$-band images obtained with DECam at the CTIO 4-m Blanco Telescope. The tidal tails are among the most remote stellar streams presently known in the Milky Way halo. Cluster members have been determined from the color-magnitude diagrams and used to establish the radial density profiles, which show, in both cases, a strong departure in the outer regions from the best-fit King profile. Spatial density maps reveal tidal tails stretching out on opposite sides of both clusters, ex…
We present new CCD $VI$ photometry of the distant globular cluster Pal 13. Fourier decomposition of the light curves of the three cluster member RRab stars lead to estimations of [Fe/H]=-1.65, and a distance of 23.67$\pm$0.57 kpc. Light and colour near minimum phases for RRab stars leads to an estimate of $E(B-V)$=0.104 $\pm$ 0.001. A $V/(V-I)$ colour-magnitude diagram, built exclusively with likely star members, shows consistency with the above parameters and an age of 12 Gyrs. A search of variable stars in the field of view of our images revealed the variability of a red giant cluster member…
This work employs high-quality {\em Hubble Space Telescope} ({\em HST}) Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) F606W and F814W photometry to correct for the differential reddening affecting the colour-magnitude diagram (CMD) of the poorly-studied globular cluster (GC) Palomar\,2. Differential reddening is taken into account by assuming that morphological differences among CMDs extracted across the field of view of Palomar\,2 correspond essentially to shifts (quantified in terms of $δE(B-V)$) along the reddening vector due to a non-uniform dust distribution. The average reddening difference over all…
We use photometry from the DECam Legacy Survey to detect candidate tidal tails extending ~5 deg on either side of the Palomar 13 globular cluster. The tails are aligned with the proper motion of Palomar 13 and are consistent with its old, metal-poor stellar population. We identify three RR Lyrae stars that are plausibly associated with the tails, in addition to four previously known in the cluster. From these RR Lyrae stars, we find that the mean distance to the cluster and tails is $23.6 \pm 0.2$ kpc and estimate the total (initial) luminosity of the cluster to be $L_V=5.1^{+9.7}_{-3.4}\times…
In the framework of the STREGA (STRucture and Evolution of the GAlaxy) survey, two fields around the globular cluster Pal 12 were observed with the aim of detecting the possible presence of streams and/or an extended halo. The adopted stellar tracers are the Main Sequence, Turn-off and Red Giant Branch stars. We discuss the lumi- nosity function and the star counts in the observed region covering about 2 tidal radii, confirming that Pal 12 appears to be embedded in the Sagittarius Stream. Adopting an original approach to separate cluster and field stars, we do not find any evidence of sig- nif…
Recent results from chemical tagging studies using APOGEE data suggest a strong link between the chemical abundance patterns of stars found within globular clusters, and chemically peculiar populations in the Galactic halo field. In this paper we analyse the chemical compositions of stars within the cluster body and tidal streams of Palomar 5, a globular cluster that is being tidally disrupted by interaction with the Galactic gravitational potential. We report the identification of nitrogen-rich (N-rich) stars both within and beyond the tidal radius of Palomar 5, with the latter being clearly …
We present two spectroscopic surveys of the tidal stellar stream of the Palomar 5 globular cluster, undertaken with the VLT/FLAMES and AAT/AAOmega instruments. We use these data in conjunction with photometric data presented in the previous contribution in this series to classify the survey stars in terms of their probability of belonging to the Palomar 5 stellar stream. We find that high-probability candidates are only found in a very narrow spatial interval surrounding the locus of the stream on the sky. PanSTARRS RRLyrae stars in this region of sky are also distributed in a similar manner. …
We obtained precise line-of-sight radial velocities of 23 member stars of the remote halo globular cluster Palomar 4 (Pal 4) using the High Resolution Echelle Spectrograph (HIRES) at the Keck I telescope. We also measured the mass function of the cluster down to a limiting magnitude of V~28 mag using archival HST/WFPC2 imaging. We derived the cluster's surface brightness profile based on the WFPC2 data and on broad-band imaging with the Low-Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (LRIS) at the Keck II telescope. We find a mean cluster velocity of 72.55+/-0.22 km/s and a velocity dispersion of 0.87+/-0…
Palomar 6 (Pal~6) is a moderately metal-poor globular cluster projected towards the Galactic bulge. A full analysis of the cluster can give hints on the early chemical enrichment of the Galaxy and a plausible origin of the cluster. The aim of this study is threefold: a detailed analysis of high-resolution spectroscopic data obtained with the UVES spectrograph at the Very Large Telescope (VLT) at ESO, the derivation of the age and distance of Pal~6 from Hubble Space Telescope (HST) photometric data, and an orbital analysis to determine the probable origin of the cluster. High-resolution spectra…
We present a chemical abundance analysis of the tidally disrupted globular cluster (GC) Palomar 5. By co-adding high-resolution spectra of 15 member stars from the cluster's main body, taken at low signal-to-noise with the Keck/HIRES spectrograph, we were able to measure integrated abundance ratios of 24 species of 20 elements including all major nucleosynthetic channels (namely the light element Na; $α$-elements Mg, Si, Ca, Ti; Fe-peak and heavy elements Sc, V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn; and the neutron-capture elements Y, Zr, Ba, La, Nd, Sm, Eu). The mean metallicity of $-1.56\pm0.02\pm0.06$ de…
Globular clusters (GCs) in the outer Milky Way halo are important tracers of the assembly history of our Galaxy. Only a few of these objects show spreads in heavier elements beyond the canonical light-element variations that have essentially been found throughout the entire Galactic GC system, suggesting a more complex origin and evolution of these objects. Here, we present the first abundance analysis of three red giants in the remote ($R_{\rm GC}=38$ kpc) outer halo GC Palomar 15, based on medium-resolution spectra obtained with the Keck/ESI instrument. Our results ascertain a low iron abund…
Palomar 4 is a low-density globular cluster with a current mass $\approx30000 M_{\odot}$ in the outer halo of the Milky Way with a two-body relaxation time of the order of a Hubble time. Yet, it is strongly mass segregated and contains a stellar mass function depleted of low-mass stars. Pal 4 was either born this way or it is a result of extraordinary dynamical evolution. Since two-body relaxation cannot explain these signatures alone, enhanced mass loss through tidal shocking may have had a strong influence on Pal 4. Here, we compute a grid of direct N-body simulations to model Pal 4 on vario…
Stars that escape globular clusters form tidal tails that are predominantly shaped by the global distribution of mass in the Galaxy, but also preserve a historical record of small-scale perturbations. Using deep $grz$ photometry from DECaLS, we present highly probable members of the tidal tails associated with the disrupting globular cluster Palomar 5. These data yield the cleanest view of a stellar stream beyond $\sim20\,\rm kpc$ and reveal: (1) a wide, low surface-brightness extension of the leading tail; (2) significant density variations along the stream; and (3) sharp changes in the direc…
The SDSS-III APOGEE DR12 is a unique resource to search for stars beyond the tidal radii of star clusters. We have examined the APOGEE DR12 database for new candidates of the young star cluster Palomar 1, a system with previously reported tidal tails (Niederste-Ostholt et al. 2010). The APOGEE ASPCAP database includes spectra and stellar parameters for two known members of Pal 1 (Stars I and II), however these do not agree with the stellar parameters determined from optical spectra by Sakari et al. (2011). We find that the APOGEE analysis of these two stars is strongly affected by the known pe…
At a Galactocentric distance of 27 kpc, Pal 13 is an old globular cluster (GC) in the outer halo. We present a chemical abundance analysis of this remote system from high-resolution spectra obtained with Keck/HIRES. Owing to the low signal-to-noise ratio of the data, our analysis is based on a coaddition of the spectra of 18 member stars. We are able to determine integrated abundance ratios for 16 species of 14 elements, of $α$-elements (Mg,Si,Ca,Ti), Fe-peak (Sc,Mn,Cr,Ni,Cu,and Zn), and n-capture elements (Y,Ba). While the mean Na abundance is found to be slightly enhanced and halo-like, our …
In this work we present a method to identify possible members of globular clusters using data from Gaia DR2. The method consists of two stages: the first one based on a clustering algorithm, and the second one based on the analysis of the projected spatial distribution of stars with different proper motions. In order to confirm that the clusters members extracted by the method correspond to actual globular clusters, the spatial distribution, the vector point diagram of the proper motions and the colour-magnitude diagrams are analysed. We apply the developed method to eight clusters: NGC 1261, …
As a result of their internal dynamical coherence, thin stellar streams formed by disrupting globular clusters (GCs) can act as detectors of dark matter (DM) substructure in the Galactic halo. Perturbations induced by close flybys amplify into detectable density gaps, providing a probe both of the abundance and of the masses of DM subhaloes. Here, we use N-body simulations to show that the Galactic population of giant molecular clouds (GMCs) can also produce gaps (and clumps) in GC streams, and so may confuse the detection of DM subhaloes. We explore the cases of streams analogous to the obser…
Kinematically cold tidal streams of globular clusters (GC) are excellent tracers of the Galactic gravitational potential at moderate Galactocentric distances, and can also be used as probes of the law of gravity on Galactic scales. Here, we compare for the first time the generation of such streams in Newtonian and Milgromian gravity (MOND). We first compute analytical results to investigate the expected shape of the GC gravitational potential in both frameworks, and we then run N-body simulations with the Phantom of Ramses code. We find that the GCs tend to become lopsided in MOND. This is a c…
The legacy imaging surveys for the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument project provides multiplecolor photometric data, which are about 2 mag deeper than the SDSS. In this study, we redetermine the fundamental properties for an old halo globular cluster of Palomar 5 based on these new imaging data, including structure parameters, stellar population parameters, and luminosity and mass functions. These characteristics, together with its tidal tails, are key for dynamical studies of the cluster and constraining the mass model of the Milky Way. By fitting the King model to the radial surface dens…

We present Subaru/FOCAS and Keck/DEIMOS medium-resolution spectroscopy of a tidally disrupting Milky Way (MW) globular cluster Palomar 5 and its tidal stream. The observed fields are located to cover an angular extent of $\sim 17$\arcdeg along the stream, providing an opportunity to investigate a trend in line-of-sight velocities ($V_{\rm los}$) along the stream, which is essential to constrain its orbit and underlying gravitational potential of the Milky Way's dark matter halo. A spectral fitting technique is applied to the observed spectra to obtain stellar parameters and metallicities ([Fe/…
We present a study of the effects of collisional dynamics on the formation and detectability of cold tidal streams. A semi-analytical model for the evolution of the stellar mass function was implemented and coupled to a fast stellar stream simulation code, as well as the synthetic cluster evolution code EMACSS for the mass evolution as a function of a globular cluster orbit. We find that the increase in the average mass of the escaping stars for clusters close to dissolution has a major effect on the observable stream surface density. As an example, we show that Palomar 5 would have undetectab…
Palomar 5 (Pal 5) is a faint halo globular cluster associated with narrow tidal tails. It is a useful system to understand the process of tidal dissolution, as well as to constrain the potential of the Milky Way. A well-determined orbit for Pal 5 would enable detailed study of these open questions. We present here the first CCD-based proper motion measurement of Pal 5 obtained using SDSS as a first epoch and new LBT/LBC images as a second, giving a baseline of 15 years. We perform relative astrometry, using SDSS as a distortion-free reference, and images of the cluster and also of the Pal 5 st…
Thin stellar streams, formed from the tidal disruption of globular clusters, are important gravitational tools, sensitive to both global and small-scale properties of dark matter. The Palomar 5 stellar stream (Pal 5) is an exemplar stream within the Milky Way: Its $\sim 20^\circ$ tidal tails connect back to the progenitor cluster, and the stream has been used to study the shape, total mass, and substructure fraction of the dark matter distribution of the Galaxy. However, most details of the phase-space distribution of the stream are not fully explained, and dynamical models that use the stream…
We report chemical abundances obtained by SDSS-III/APOGEE for giant stars in five globular clusters located within 2.2 kpc of the Galactic centre. We detect the presence of multiple stellar populations in four of those clusters (NGC 6553, NGC 6528, Terzan 5, and Palomar 6) and find strong evidence for their presence in NGC 6522. All clusters present a significant spread in the abundances of N, C, Na, and Al, with the usual correlations and anti-correlations between various abundances seen in other globular clusters. Our results provide important quantitative constraints on theoretical models f…
Four planetary nebulae (PNe) are considered to be probable or possible members of Galactic globular clusters (GCs). These are Ps 1 = K648 in M15, GJJC 1 = IRAS 18333-2357 in M22, JaFu 1 in Palomar 6, and JaFu 2 in NGC 6441. In addition to lying close to the host GCs on the sky, these PNe have radial velocities that are consistent, within the errors and stellar velocity dispersions, with cluster membership. The remaining membership criterion is whether the proper motions (PMs) of the central stars are in agreement with those of the host clusters. We have carried out the PM test for all four PNe…
We make use of recent estimates for the parameters of the Milky Way's halo globular clusters and study the influence of the galactic bar on the dynamics of these clusters by computing their orbits. We use both an axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric galactic potentials, which include the rotating elongated bar/bulge structure. We account for observational errors both in the positions and in the velocities of the globular clusters and explore the influence of the bar on cluster's evolution. This is contained in the angular momentum-total energy plane, (Lz,E), which is widely exploited as an indica…
