In panorama understanding, the widely used equirectangular projection (ERP) entails boundary discontinuity and spatial distortion. It severely deteriorates the conventional CNNs and vision Transformers on panoramas. In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective architecture named PanoSwin to learn panorama representations with ERP. To deal with the challenges brought by equirectangular projection, we explore a pano-style shift windowing scheme and novel pitch attention to address the boundary discontinuity and the spatial distortion, respectively. Besides, based on spherical distance and Cartesian coordinates, we adapt absolute positional embeddings and relative positional biases for panoramas to enhance panoramic geometry information. Realizing that planar image understanding might share some common knowledge with panorama understanding, we devise a novel two-stage learning framework to facilitate knowledge transfer from the planar images to panoramas. We conduct experiments against the state-of-the-art on various panoramic tasks, i.e., panoramic object detection, panoramic classification, and panoramic layout estimation. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of PanoSwin in panorama understanding.

This paper presents a method of estimating the geometry of a room and the 3D pose of objects from a single 360-degree panorama image. Assuming Manhattan World geometry, we formulate the task as a Bayesian inference problem in which we estimate positions and orientations of walls and objects. The method combines surface normal estimation, 2D object detection and 3D object pose estimation. Quantitative results are presented on a dataset of synthetically generated 3D rooms containing objects, as well as on a subset of hand-labeled images from the public SUN360 dataset.

We introduced a high-resolution equirectangular panorama (360-degree, virtual reality) dataset for object detection and propose a multi-projection variant of YOLO detector. The main challenge with equirectangular panorama image are i) the lack of annotated training data, ii) high-resolution imagery and iii) severe geometric distortions of objects near the panorama projection poles. In this work, we solve the challenges by i) using training examples available in the "conventional datasets" (ImageNet and COCO), ii) employing only low-resolution images that require only moderate GPU computing pow…

With the recent proliferation of consumer-grade 360° cameras, it is worth revisiting visual perception challenges with spherical cameras given the potential benefit of their global field of view. To this end we introduce a spherical convolutional hourglass network (SCHN) for the dense labeling on the sphere. The SCHN is invariant to camera orientation (lifting the usual requirement for `upright' panoramic images), and its design is scalable for larger practical datasets. Initial experiments show promising results on a spherical semantic segmentation task.

Existing panoramic depth estimation methods based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) focus on removing panoramic distortions, failing to perceive panoramic structures efficiently due to the fixed receptive field in CNNs. This paper proposes the panorama transformer (named PanoFormer) to estimate the depth in panorama images, with tangent patches from spherical domain, learnable token flows, and panorama specific metrics. In particular, we divide patches on the spherical tangent domain into tokens to reduce the negative effect of panoramic distortions. Since the geometric structures are es…
Predicting panoramic indoor lighting from a single perspective image is a fundamental but highly ill-posed problem in computer vision and graphics. To achieve locale-aware and robust prediction, this problem can be decomposed into three sub-tasks: depth-based image warping, panorama inpainting and high-dynamic-range (HDR) reconstruction, among which the success of panorama inpainting plays a key role. Recent methods mostly rely on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to fill the missing contents in the warped panorama. However, they usually achieve suboptimal performance since the missing cont…

Effective panoramic photographs are taken from vantage points that are high. High vantage points have recently become easier to reach as the cost of quadrotor helicopters has dropped to nearly disposable levels. Although cameras carried by such aircraft weigh only a few grams, their low-quality video can be converted into panoramas of high quality and high resolution. Also, the small size of these aircraft vastly reduces the risks inherent to flight.

360$^{\circ}$ panoramas are a rich medium, yet notoriously difficult to visualize in the 2D image plane. We explore how intelligent rotations of a spherical image may enable content-aware projection with fewer perceptible distortions. Whereas existing approaches assume the viewpoint is fixed, intuitively some viewing angles within the sphere preserve high-level objects better than others. To discover the relationship between these optimal snap angles and the spherical panorama's content, we develop a reinforcement learning approach for the cubemap projection model. Implemented as a deep recurr…

We propose a novel approach to compute high-resolution (2048x1024 and higher) depths for panoramas that is significantly faster and qualitatively and qualitatively more accurate than the current state-of-the-art method (360MonoDepth). As traditional neural network-based methods have limitations in the output image sizes (up to 1024x512) due to GPU memory constraints, both 360MonoDepth and our method rely on stitching multiple perspective disparity or depth images to come out a unified panoramic depth map. However, to achieve globally consistent stitching, 360MonoDepth relied on solving extensi…
We present Omnidirectional Neural Radiance Fields (OmniNeRF), the first method to the application of parallax-enabled novel panoramic view synthesis. Recent works for novel view synthesis focus on perspective images with limited field-of-view and require sufficient pictures captured in a specific condition. Conversely, OmniNeRF can generate panorama images for unknown viewpoints given a single equirectangular image as training data. To this end, we propose to augment the single RGB-D panorama by projecting back and forth between a 3D world and different 2D panoramic coordinates at different vi…

We present a deep learning framework, called DuLa-Net, to predict Manhattan-world 3D room layouts from a single RGB panorama. To achieve better prediction accuracy, our method leverages two projections of the panorama at once, namely the equirectangular panorama-view and the perspective ceiling-view, that each contains different clues about the room layouts. Our network architecture consists of two encoder-decoder branches for analyzing each of the two views. In addition, a novel feature fusion structure is proposed to connect the two branches, which are then jointly trained to predict the 2D …

We present an end-to-end deep learning framework for indoor panoramic image inpainting. Although previous inpainting methods have shown impressive performance on natural perspective images, most fail to handle panoramic images, particularly indoor scenes, which usually contain complex structure and texture content. To achieve better inpainting quality, we propose to exploit both the global and local context of indoor panorama during the inpainting process. Specifically, we take the low-level layout edges estimated from the input panorama as a prior to guide the inpainting model for recovering …

We present an algorithm for converting an indoor spherical panorama into a photograph with a simulated overhead view. The resulting image will have an extremely wide field of view covering up to 4π steradians of the spherical panorama. We argue that our method complements the stereographic projection commonly used in the "little planet" effect. The stereographic projection works well in creating little planets of outdoor scenes; whereas our method is a well-suited counterpart for indoor scenes. The main innovation of our method is the introduction of a novel azimuthal map projection that can s…

In this paper, we propose a panorama stitching algorithm based on asymmetric bidirectional optical flow. This algorithm expects multiple photos captured by fisheye lens cameras as input, and then, through the proposed algorithm, these photos can be merged into a high-quality 360-degree spherical panoramic image. For photos taken from a distant perspective, the parallax among them is relatively small, and the obtained panoramic image can be nearly seamless and undistorted. For photos taken from a close perspective or with a relatively large parallax, a seamless though partially distorted panora…

We present a novel Structure from Motion pipeline that is capable of reconstructing accurate camera poses for panorama-style video capture without prior camera intrinsic calibration. While panorama-style capture is common and convenient, previous reconstruction methods fail to obtain accurate reconstructions due to the rotation-dominant motion and small baseline between views. Our method is built on the assumption that the camera motion approximately corresponds to motion on a sphere, and we introduce three novel relative pose methods to estimate the fundamental matrix and camera distortion fo…

Given a single RGB panorama, the goal of 3D layout reconstruction is to estimate the room layout by predicting the corners, floor boundary, and ceiling boundary. A common approach has been to use standard convolutional networks to predict the corners and boundaries, followed by post-processing to generate the 3D layout. However, the space-varying distortions in panoramic images are not compatible with the translational equivariance property of standard convolutions, thus degrading performance. Instead, we propose to use spherical convolutions. The resulting network, which we call OmniLayout pe…
In this paper, we propose a learning-based method for predicting dense depth values of a scene from a monocular omnidirectional image. An omnidirectional image has a full field-of-view, providing much more complete descriptions of the scene than perspective images. However, fully-convolutional networks that most current solutions rely on fail to capture rich global contexts from the panorama. To address this issue and also the distortion of equirectangular projection in the panorama, we propose Cubemap Vision Transformers (CViT), a new transformer-based architecture that can model long-range d…

Learning depth from spherical panoramas is becoming a popular research topic because a panorama has a full field-of-view of the environment and provides a relatively complete description of a scene. However, applying well-studied CNNs for perspective images to the standard representation of spherical panoramas, i.e., the equirectangular projection, is suboptimal, as it becomes distorted towards the poles. Another representation is the cubemap projection, which is distortion-free but discontinued on edges and limited in the field-of-view. This paper introduces a new framework to fuse features f…

We present a new approach to the problem of estimating the 3D room layout from a single panoramic image. We represent room layout as three 1D vectors that encode, at each image column, the boundary positions of floor-wall and ceiling-wall, and the existence of wall-wall boundary. The proposed network, HorizonNet, trained for predicting 1D layout, outperforms previous state-of-the-art approaches. The designed post-processing procedure for recovering 3D room layouts from 1D predictions can automatically infer the room shape with low computation cost - it takes less than 20ms for a panorama image…
The Peirce quincuncial projection is a mapping of the surface of a sphere to the interior of a square. It is a conformal map except for four points on the equator. These points of non-conformality cause significant artifacts in photographic applications. In this paper, we propose an algorithm and user-interface to mitigate these artifacts. Moreover, in order to facilitate an interactive user-interface, we present a fast algorithm for calculating the Peirce quincuncial projection of spherical imagery. We then promote the Peirce quincuncial projection as a viable alternative to the more popular …
