Deep neural networks have delivered remarkable performance and have been widely used in various visual tasks. However, their huge size causes significant inconvenience for transmission and storage. Many previous studies have explored model size compression. However, these studies often approach various lossy and lossless compression methods in isolation, leading to challenges in achieving high compression ratios efficiently. This work proposes a post-training model size compression method that combines lossy and lossless compression in a unified way. We first propose a unified parametric weight transformation, which ensures different lossy compression methods can be performed jointly in a post-training manner. Then, a dedicated differentiable counter is introduced to guide the optimization of lossy compression to arrive at a more suitable point for later lossless compression. Additionally, our method can easily control a desired global compression ratio and allocate adaptive ratios for different layers. Finally, our method can achieve a stable $10\times$ compression ratio without sacrificing accuracy and a $20\times$ compression ratio with minor accuracy loss in a short time. Our code is available at https://github.com/ModelTC/L2_Compression .

We propose a novel joint lossy image and residual compression framework for learning $\ell_\infty$-constrained near-lossless image compression. Specifically, we obtain a lossy reconstruction of the raw image through lossy image compression and uniformly quantize the corresponding residual to satisfy a given tight $\ell_\infty$ error bound. Suppose that the error bound is zero, i.e., lossless image compression, we formulate the joint optimization problem of compressing both the lossy image and the original residual in terms of variational auto-encoders and solve it with end-to-end training. To …

We leverage the powerful lossy image compression algorithm BPG to build a lossless image compression system. Specifically, the original image is first decomposed into the lossy reconstruction obtained after compressing it with BPG and the corresponding residual. We then model the distribution of the residual with a convolutional neural network-based probabilistic model that is conditioned on the BPG reconstruction, and combine it with entropy coding to losslessly encode the residual. Finally, the image is stored using the concatenation of the bitstreams produced by BPG and the learned residual…

As a commonly-used image compression format, JPEG has been broadly applied in the transmission and storage of images. To further reduce the compression cost while maintaining the quality of JPEG images, lossless transcoding technology has been proposed to recompress the compressed JPEG image in the DCT domain. Previous works, on the other hand, typically reduce the redundancy of DCT coefficients and optimize the probability prediction of entropy coding in a hand-crafted manner that lacks generalization ability and flexibility. To tackle the above challenge, we propose the learned lossless JPEG…
Lossy image compression strategies allow for more efficient storage and transmission of data by encoding data to a reduced form. This is essential enable training with larger datasets on less storage-equipped environments. However, such compression can cause severe decline in performance of deep Convolution Neural Network (CNN) architectures even when mild compression is applied and the resulting compressed imagery is visually identical. In this work, we apply the lossy JPEG compression method with six discrete levels of increasing compression {95, 75, 50, 15, 10, 5} to infrared band (thermal)…

Therefore, in this paper, we explore the methods widely used in lossy compression and apply them to lossless compression. Inspired by the impressive performance of the Gaussian mixture model (GMM) shown in lossy compression, we generate a lossless…

Color filter array is spatial multiplexing of pixel-sized filters placed over pixel detectors in camera sensors. The state-of-the-art lossless coding techniques of raw sensor data captured by such sensors leverage spatial or cross-color correlation using lifting schemes. In this paper, we propose a lifting-based lossless white balance algorithm. When applied to the raw sensor data, the spatial bandwidth of the implied chrominance signals decreases. We propose to use this white balance as a pre-processing step to lossless CFA subsampled image/video compression, improving the overall coding effi…

Images and video frames captured by cameras placed throughout smart cities are often transmitted over the network to a server to be processed by deep neural networks for various tasks. Transmission of raw images, i.e., without any form of compression, requires high bandwidth and can lead to congestion issues and delays in transmission. The use of lossy image compression techniques can reduce the quality of the images, leading to accuracy degradation. In this paper, we analyze the effect of applying low-overhead lossy image compression methods on the accuracy of visual crowd counting, and measu…

In this paper, we offer a new architecture for the lossless compression of microarray images. In this architecture, we have used dedicated hardware for the separation of foreground pixels from background ones. By separating these pixels …
We introduce a simple and efficient lossless image compression algorithm. We store a low resolution version of an image as raw pixels, followed by several iterations of lossless super-resolution. For lossless super-resolution, we predict the probability of a high-resolution image, conditioned on the low-resolution input, and use entropy coding to compress this super-resolution operator. Super-Resolution based Compression (SReC) is able to achieve state-of-the-art compression rates with practical runtimes on large datasets. Code is available online at https://github.com/caoscott/SReC.
Lossy face image compression can degrade the image quality and the utility for the purpose of face recognition. This work investigates the effect of lossy image compression on a state-of-the-art face recognition model, and on multiple face image quality assessment models. The analysis is conducted over a range of specific image target sizes. Four compression types are considered, namely JPEG, JPEG 2000, downscaled PNG, and notably the new JPEG XL format. Frontal color images from the ColorFERET database were used in a Region Of Interest (ROI) variant and a portrait variant. We primarily conclu…

This study presents a new lossy image compression method that utilizes the multi-scale features of natural images. Our model consists of two networks: multi-scale lossy autoencoder and parallel multi-scale lossless coder. The multi-scale lossy autoencoder extracts the multi-scale image features to quantized variables and the parallel multi-scale lossless coder enables rapid and accurate lossless coding of the quantized variables via encoding/decoding the variables in parallel. Our proposed model achieves comparable performance to the state-of-the-art model on Kodak and RAISE-1k dataset images,…
In recent years, a bag with image and video compression formats has been torn. However, most of them are focused on lossy compression and only marginally support the lossless mode. In this paper, I will focus on lossless formats and the critical question: "Which one is the most efficient?" It turned out that FLIF is currently the most efficient format for lossless image compression. This finding is in contrast to that FLIF developers stopped its development in favor of JPEG XL.
We present a CNN-based predictive lossless compression scheme for raw color mosaic images of digital cameras. This specialized application problem was previously understudied but it is now becoming increasingly important, because modern CNN methods for image restoration tasks (e.g., superresolution, low lighting enhancement, deblurring), must operate on original raw mosaic images to obtain the best possible results. The key innovation of this paper is a high-order nonlinear CNN predictor of spatial-spectral mosaic patterns. The deep learning prediction can model highly complex sample dependenc…

Lossless compression methods shorten the expected representation size of data without loss of information, using a statistical model. Flow-based models are attractive in this setting because they admit exact likelihood optimization, which is equivalent to minimizing the expected number of bits per message. However, conventional flows assume continuous data, which may lead to reconstruction errors when quantized for compression. For that reason, we introduce a flow-based generative model for ordinal discrete data called Integer Discrete Flow (IDF): a bijective integer map that can learn rich tr…
JPEG images can be further compressed to enhance the storage and transmission of large-scale image datasets. Existing learned lossless compressors for RGB images cannot be well transferred to JPEG images due to the distinguishing distribution of DCT coefficients and raw pixels. In this paper, we propose a novel framework for learned lossless compression of JPEG images that achieves end-to-end optimized prediction of the distribution of decoded DCT coefficients. To enable learning in the frequency domain, DCT coefficients are partitioned into groups to utilize implicit local redundancy. An auto…

Point cloud based 3D visual representation is becoming popular due to its ability to exhibit the real world in a more comprehensive and immersive way. However, under a limited network bandwidth, it is very challenging to communicate this kind of media due to its huge data volume. Therefore, the MPEG have launched the standardization for point cloud compression (PCC), and proposed three model categories, i.e., TMC1, TMC2, and TMC3. Because the 3D geometry compression methods of TMC1 and TMC3 are similar, TMC1 and TMC3 are further merged into a new platform namely TMC13. In this paper, we first …
We propose a new approach to the problem of optimizing autoencoders for lossy image compression. New media formats, changing hardware technology, as well as diverse requirements and content types create a need for compression algorithms which are more flexible than existing codecs. Autoencoders have the potential to address this need, but are difficult to optimize directly due to the inherent non-differentiabilty of the compression loss. We here show that minimal changes to the loss are sufficient to train deep autoencoders competitive with JPEG 2000 and outperforming recently proposed approac…

A large number of autonomous driving tasks need high-definition stereo images, which requires a large amount of storage space. Efficiently executing lossless compression has become a practical problem. Commonly, it is hard to make accurate probability estimates for each pixel. To tackle this, we propose L3C-Stereo, a multi-scale lossless compression model consisting of two main modules: the warping module and the probability estimation module. The warping module takes advantage of two view feature maps from the same domain to generate a disparity map, which is used to reconstruct the right vie…
Generative model based image lossless compression algorithms have seen a great success in improving compression ratio. However, the throughput for most of them is less than 1 MB/s even with the most advanced AI accelerated chips, preventing them from most real-world applications, which often require 100 MB/s. In this paper, we propose PILC, an end-to-end image lossless compression framework that achieves 200 MB/s for both compression and decompression with a single NVIDIA Tesla V100 GPU, 10 times faster than the most efficient one before. To obtain this result, we first develop an AI codec tha…
As a probabilistic modeling technique, the flow-based model has demonstrated remarkable potential in the field of lossless compression \cite{idf,idf++,lbb,ivpf,iflow},. Compared with other deep generative models (eg. In flow-based models, multi-scale architecture provides a shortcut from the shallow layer to the output layer, which significantly reduce…

With the fast development of deep learning techniques, deep neural networks have been used in this field to achieve a higher compression rate. Methods based on pixel-wise autoregressive statistical models have shown good performance. However, the sequential processing way prevents these methods to be used in practice. Recently, multi-scale autoregressive models have been proposed to address this limitation. Multi-scale approaches can use parallel computing systems effic…

Lossy image compression has been studied extensively in the context of typical loss functions such as RMSE, MS-SSIM, etc. However, compression at low bitrates generally produces unsatisfying results. Furthermore, the availability of massive public image datasets appears to have hardly been exploited in image compression. Here, we present a paradigm for eliciting human image reconstruction in order to perform lossy image compression. In this paradigm, one human describes images to a second human, whose task is to reconstruct the target image using publicly available images and text instructions…
