Current knowledge distillation approaches in semantic segmentation tend to adopt a holistic approach that treats all spatial locations equally. However, for dense prediction, students' predictions on edge regions are highly uncertain due to contextual information leakage, requiring higher spatial sensitivity knowledge than the body regions. To address this challenge, this paper proposes a novel approach called boundary-privileged knowledge distillation (BPKD). BPKD distills the knowledge of the teacher model's body and edges separately to the compact student model. Specifically, we employ two distinct loss functions: (i) edge loss, which aims to distinguish between ambiguous classes at the pixel level in edge regions; (ii) body loss, which utilizes shape constraints and selectively attends to the inner-semantic regions. Our experiments demonstrate that the proposed BPKD method provides extensive refinements and aggregation for edge and body regions. Additionally, the method achieves state-of-the-art distillation performance for semantic segmentation on three popular benchmark datasets, highlighting its effectiveness and generalization ability. BPKD shows consistent improvements across a diverse array of lightweight segmentation structures, including both CNNs and transformers, underscoring its architecture-agnostic adaptability. Online Action Detection (OAD) in videos is proposed as a per-frame labeling task to address the real-time prediction tasks that can only obtain the previous and current video frames. This paper presents a novel learning-with-privileged based framework for online action detection where the future frames only observable at the training stages are considered as a form of privileged information. Knowledge distillation is employed to transfer the privileged information from the offline teacher to the online student. We note that this setting is different from conventional KD because the difference …
We propose a technique that tackles action detection in multimodal videos under a realistic and challenging condition in which only limited training data and partially observed modalities are available. Common methods in transfer learning do not take advantage of the extra modalities potentially available in the source domain. On the other hand, previous work on multimodal learning only focuses on a single domain or task and does not handle the modality discrepancy between training and testing. In this work, we propose a method termed graph distillation that incorporates rich privileged inform…

Performance of trimap-free image matting methods is limited when trying to decouple the deterministic and undetermined regions, especially in the scenes where foregrounds are semantically ambiguous, chromaless, or high transmittance. In this paper, we propose a novel framework named Privileged Prior Information Distillation for Image Matting (PPID-IM) that can effectively transfer privileged prior environment-aware information to improve the performance of students in solving hard foregrounds. The prior information of trimap regulates only the teacher model during the training stage, while not…

Heterogeneous data modalities can provide complementary cues for several tasks, usually leading to more robust algorithms and better performance. However, while training data can be accurately collected to include a variety of sensory modalities, it is often the case that not all of them are available in real life (testing) scenarios, where a model has to be deployed. This raises the challenge of how to extract information from multimodal data in the training stage, in a form that can be exploited at test time, considering limitations such as noisy or missing modalities. This paper presents a …

Knowledge distillation is a widely applicable technique for training a student neural network under the guidance of a trained teacher network. For example, in neural network compression, a high-capacity teacher is distilled to train a compact student; in privileged learning, a teacher trained with privileged data is distilled to train a student without access to that data. The distillation loss determines how a teacher's knowledge is captured and transferred to the student. In this paper, we propose a new form of knowledge distillation loss that is inspired by the observation that semantically…

The primary goal of knowledge distillation (KD) is to encapsulate the information of a model learned from a teacher network into a student network, with the latter being more compact than the former. Existing work, e.g., using Kullback-Leibler divergence for distillation, may fail to capture important structural knowledge in the teacher network and often lacks the ability for feature generalization, particularly in situations when teacher and student are built to address different classification tasks. We propose Wasserstein Contrastive Representation Distillation (WCoRD), which leverages both…
In this work, we address the issues of missing modalities that have arisen from the Visual Question Answer-Difference prediction task and find a novel method to solve the task at hand. We address the missing modality-the ground truth answers-that are not present at test time and use a privileged knowledge distillation scheme to deal with the issue of the missing modality. In order to efficiently do so, we first introduce a model, the "Big" Teacher, that takes the image/question/answer triplet as its input and outperforms the baseline, then use a combination of models to distill knowledge to a …
