In this work, we present a theoretical research on the lattice relaxations, phonon properties, and relaxed electronic structures in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (TBG). We construct a continuum elastic model in order to study the lattice dynamics of magic-angle TBG, where both in-plane and out-of-plane lattice displacements are take into account. The fully relaxed lattice structure calculated using such a model is in quantitative agreement with experimental measurements. Furthermore, we investigate the phonon properties in magic-angle TBG using the continuum elastic model, where both the in-plane and out-of-plane phonon modes are included and treated on equal footing. We identify different types of moiré phonons including in-plane sliding modes, soft out-of-plane flexural modes, as well as out-of-plane breathing modes. The latter two types of phonon modes exhibit interesting monopolar, dipolar, quadrupolar, and octupolar-type out-of-plane vibration patterns. Additionally, we explore the impact of the relaxed moiré superlattice structure on the electronic band structures of magic-angle TBG using an effective continuum model, which shows nearly exact agreement with those calculated using a microscopic atomistic tight-binding approach. Our work lays foundation for further studies on the electron-phonon coupling effects and their interplay with $e$-$e$ interactions in magic-angle TBG.
Moiré superlattices in the twisted bilayer graphene provide an unprecedented platform to investigate a wide range of exotic quantum phenomena. Recently, the twist degree of freedom has been introduced into various classical wave systems, giving rise to new ideas for the wave control. The question is whether twistronics and moiré physics can be extended to electronics with potential applications in the twist-enabled signal processing. Here, we demonstrate both in theory and experiment that lots of fascinating moiré physics can be engineered using electric circuits with extremely high degrees of…
Moiré superlattices in two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures provide 20 an efficient way to engineer electron band properties. The recent discovery of exotic quantum phases and their interplay in twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) has built this moiré system one of the most renowned condensed matter platforms (1-10). So far the studies of tBLG has been mostly focused on the lowest two flat moiré bands at the first magic angle θm1 ~ 1.1°, leaving high-order moiré bands and magic angles largely unexplored. Here we report 25 an observation of multiple well-isolated flat moiré ban…
We study the energy spectrum of moiré systems under a uniform magnetic field. The superlattice potential generally broadens Landau levels into Chern bands with finite bandwidth. However, we find that these Chern bands become flat at a discrete set of magnetic fields which we dub "magic zeros". The flat band subspace is generally different from the Landau level subspace in the absence of the moiré superlattice. By developing a semiclassical quantization method and taking account of superlattice induced Bragg reflection, we prove that magic zeros arise from the simultaneous quantization of two d…
Low-energy moiré flat bands in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (tBG) have demonstrated incredible potentials to exhibit rich exotic quantum phenomena. Theoretically, the moiré flat bands of tBG are based on the extended structures, i.e., the moiré patterns with periodic boundary conditions. However, a fundamental question of whether the flat bands can exist in the graphene moiré patterns with a reduced structure symmetry, such as sample edges, remains unanswered. Here, via scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, we study the local electronic properties of a magic-angle tBG near th…
The discovery of correlated states and superconductivity in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) has established moiré quantum matter as a new platform to explore interaction-driven and topological quantum phenomena. Multitudes of phases have been realized in moiré systems, but surprisingly, robust superconductivity has been one of the least common of all, initially found in MATBG and only more recently also in magic-angle twisted trilayer graphene (MATTG). While MATBG and MATTG share some similar characteristics, they also exhibit substantial differences, such as in their response to …
The discovery of flat bands with non-trivial band topology in magic angle twisted bi-layer graphene (MATBG) has provided a unique platform to study strongly correlated phe-nomena including superconductivity, correlated insulators, Chern insulators and magnetism. A fundamental feature of the MATBG, so far unexplored, is its high magnetic field Hof-stadter spectrum. Here we report on a detailed magneto-transport study of a MATBG de-vice in external magnetic fields of up to B = 31 T, corresponding to one magnetic flux quan-tum per moiré unit cell Φ0. At Φ0, we observe a re-entrant correlated insu…
We show that the insulating states of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene support a series of collective modes corresponding to local particle-hole excitations on triangular lattice sites. Our theory is based on a continuum model of the magic angle flat bands. When the system is insulating at moiré band filling $ν=-3$, our calculations show that the ground state supports seven low-energy modes that lie well below the charge gap throughout the moiré Brillouin zone, one of which couples strongly to THz photons. The low-energy collective modes are faithfully described by a model with a local $SU…
The long wavelength moiré superlattices in twisted 2D structures have emerged as a highly tunable platform for strongly correlated electron physics. We study the moiré bands in twisted transition metal dichalcogenide homobilayers, focusing on WSe$_2$, at small twist angles using a combination of first principles density functional theory, continuum modeling, and Hartree-Fock approximation. We reveal the rich physics at small twist angles $θ<4^\circ$, and identify a particular magic angle at which the top valence moiré band achieves almost perfect flatness. In the vicinity of this magic angle, …
We construct a van der Waals heterostructure consisting of three graphene layers stacked with alternating twisting angles $\pmθ$. At the average twist angle $θ\sim 1.56^{\circ}$, a theoretically predicted magic angle for the formation of flat electron bands, narrow conduction and valence moiré bands appear together with a linearly dispersing Dirac band. Upon doping the half-filled moiré valence band with holes, or the half-filled moiré conduction band with electrons, displacement field tunable superconductivity emerges, reaching a maximum critical temperature of 2.1 K at optimal doping and dis…
Moiré Fractional Chern Insulators III: Hartree-Fock Phase Diagram, Magic Angle Regime for Chern Insulator States, the Role of the Moiré Potential and Goldstone Gaps in Rhombohedral Graphene Superlattices
Near a magic twist angle, the lowest energy conduction and valence bands of bilayer graphene moiré superlattices become extremely narrow. The band dispersion that remains is sensitive to the moiré's strain pattern, nonlocal tunneling between layers, and filling-factor dependent Hartree and exchange band renormalizations. In this article we analyze the influence of these band-structure details on the pattern of flavor-symmetry-breaking observed in this narrow band system, and on the associated pattern of Fermi surface reconstructions revealed by weak-field-Hall and Schubnikov-de Haas magneto-tr…
Tuning interactions between Dirac states in graphene has attracted enormous interest because it can modify the electronic spectrum of the two-dimensional material, enhance electron correlations, and give rise to novel condensed-matter phases such as superconductors, Mott insulators, Wigner crystals and quantum anomalous Hall insulators. Previous works predominantly focus on the flat band dispersion of coupled Dirac states from different graphene layers. In this work, we propose a new route to realizing flat band physics in monolayer graphene under a periodic modulation from substrates. We take…
We construct an analytic continuum model to describe the electronic structure and the electron-phonon interaction in twisted bilayer graphenes with arbitrary lattice deformation. Starting from the tight-binding model, we derive the interlayer Hamiltonian in the presence of general lattice displacement, and obtain a long-wavelength continuum expression for smooth deformation. We show that the continuum model correctly describes the band structures of the lattice-relaxed twisted bilayer graphenes. We apply the formula to the phonon vibration, and derive an explicit expression of the electron-pho…
We investigate the physics of photonic band structures of the moiré patterns that emerged when overlapping two uni-dimensional (1D) photonic crystal slabs with mismatched periods. The band structure of our system is a result of the interplay between intra-layer and inter-layer coupling mechanisms, which can be fine-tuned via the distance separating the two layers. We derive an effective Hamiltonian that captures the essential physics of the system and reproduces all numerical simulations of electromagnetic solutions with high accuracy. Most interestingly, \textit{magic distances} corresponding…
Using scanning probe microscopy and spectroscopy, we explore the spatial symmetry of the electronic wavefunctions of twisted bilayer graphene at the "magic angle" of 1.1 degrees. This small twist angle leads to a long wavelength moiré unit cell on the order of 13 nm and the appearance of two flat bands. As the twist angle is decreased, correlation effects increase until they are maximized at the magic angle. At this angle, the wavefunctions at the charge neutrality point show only C2 symmetry due to the emergence of a charge ordered state. As the system is doped, the symmetry of the wavefuncti…
Magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) has attracted significant interest recently due to the discoveries of diverse correlated and topological states in this system. Despite the extensive research on the electron-electron interaction effects and topological properties of the electrons, the phonons of magic-angle TBG are relatively less explored. In this work, we study the phonon properties in magic-angle TBG based on \textit{ab} \textit{initio} deep potential molecular dynamics. We have calculated phonon band structures and density of states at the magic angle, and have systematically ana…
Studies of twisted moiré systems have been mainly focused on two-dimensional (2D) materials such as graphene with Dirac points and transition-metal-dichalcogenide so far. Here we propose a twisted bilayer of 2D systems which feature stable quadratic-band-touching points and find exotic physics different from previously studied twisted moiré systems. Specifically, we show that exactly flat bands can emerge at magic angles and, more interestingly, each flat band exhibits a high Chern number ($C=\pm 2$). We further consider the effect of Coulomb interactions in such magic-angle twisted systems an…
Moiré superlattices that consist of two or more layers of two-dimensional materials stacked together with a small twist angle have emerged as a tunable platform to realize various correlated and topological phases, such as Mott insulators, unconventional uperconductivity and quantum anomalous Hall effect. Recently, the magic-angle twisted trilayer graphene (MATTG) has shown both robust superconductivity similar to magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) and other unique properties, including the Pauli-limit violating and re-entrant superconductivity. These rich properties are deeply roote…
We consider twisted bilayer and trilayer graphene in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling and explore the physics of Moiré spintronics. The electronic charge density has a sharp step right at the magic angles $θ_m$. As a result, local spin observables (polarization and equilibrium spin currents) have sharp peaks (of width about a small fraction of 1$^\circ$) as a function of the twist angle $θ$, and abrupt sign reversals at $θ_m$. Thereby, the magic angle can be determined in an unprecedented accuracy. In the first chiral limit, the spin currents vanish, but the peculiar pattern of the p…
In magic angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG), the moiré superlattice potential gives rise to narrow electronic bands1 which support a multitude of many-body quantum phases. Further richness arises in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field, where the interplay between moiré and magnetic length scales leads to fractal Hofstadter subbands. In this strongly correlated Hofstadter platform, multiple experiments have identified gapped topological and correlated states, but little is known about the phase transitions between them in the intervening compressible regimes. Here, using a scanni…
Moiré superlattices have recently emerged as a novel platform where correlated physics and superconductivity can be studied with unprecedented tunability. Although correlated effects have been observed in several other moiré systems, magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) remains the only one where robust superconductivity has been reproducibly measured. Here we realize a new moiré superconductor, mirror symmetric magic-angle twisted trilayer graphene (MATTG) with dramatically richer tunability in electronic structure and superconducting properties. Hall effect and quantum oscillations m…
Bilayer graphene was theorized to host a moire miniband with flat dispersion if the layers are stacked at specific twist angles known as the magic angles. Recently, such twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) with the first magic angle twist was reported to exhibit correlated insulating state and superconductivity, where the presence of the flat miniband in the system is thought to be essential for the emergence of these ordered phases in the transport measurements. Tunneling spectroscopy and electronic compressibility measurements in tBLG have revealed a van Hove singularity that is consistent with …
Magic angle twisted trilayer graphene (TTG) has recently emerged as a new platform to engineer strongly correlated flat bands. Here, we reveal the structural and electronic properties of TTG using low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy at twist angles for which superconductivity has been observed. Real trilayer samples deviate from their idealized structure due to a strong reconstruction of the moiré lattice, which locks layers into near-magic angle, mirror symmetric domains comparable in size to the superconducting coherence length. The price for this magic relaxation is the introducti…
Superconductivity often occurs close to broken-symmetry parent states and is especially common in doped magnetic insulators. When twisted close to a magic relative orientation angle near 1 degree, bilayer graphene has flat moire superlattice minibands that have emerged as a rich and highly tunable source of strong correlation physics, notably the appearance of superconductivity close to interaction-induced insulating states. Here we report on the fabrication of bilayer graphene devices with exceptionally uniform twist angles. We show that the reduction in twist angle disorder reveals insulatin…
We theoretically study the electronic structure of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene with disordered moiré patterns. By using an extended continuum model incorporating non-uniform lattice distortion, we find that the local density of states of the flat band is hardly broadened, but splits into upper and lower subbands in most places. The spatial dependence of the splitting energy is almost exclusively determined by the local value of the effective vector potential induced by heterostrain, whereas the variation of local twist angle and local moiré period give relatively minor effects on the …
We study the atomic and electronic structures of the commensurate double moiré superlattices in fully relaxed twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) nearly aligned with the hexagonal boron nitride (BN). The single-particle effective Hamiltonian ($\hat{H}^0$) taking into account the relaxation effect and the full moiré Hamiltonian introduced by BN has been built for TBG/BN. The mean-field (MF) band structures of the self-consistent Hartree-Fock (SCHF) ground states at different number ($ν$) of filled flat bands relative to the charge neutrality point (CNP) are obtained based on $\hat{H}^0$ in the plane…
Due to its potential connection with nematicity, electronic anisotropy has been the subject of intense research effort on a wide variety of material platforms. The emergence of spatial anisotropy not only offers a characterization of material properties of metallic phases, which cannot be accessed via conventional transport techniques, but it also provides a unique window into the interplay between Coulomb interaction and broken symmetry underlying the electronic order. In this work, we utilize a new scheme of angle-resolved transport measurement (ARTM) to characterize electron anisotropy in m…
The electronic properties of heterostructures of atomically-thin van der Waals (vdW) crystals can be modified substantially by Moiré superlattice potentials arising from an interlayer twist between crystals. Moiré-tuning of the band structure has led to the recent discovery of superconductivity and correlated insulating phases in twisted bilayer graphene (TBLG) near the so-called "magic angle" of $\sim$1.1°, with a phase diagram reminiscent of high T$_c$ superconductors. However, lack of detailed understanding of the electronic spectrum and the atomic-scale influence of the Moiré pattern has s…
Symmetric, off-diagonal, resistance from rotational symmetry breaking in graphene-WSe$_2$ heterostructure: prediction for a large magic angle in a Moire system
In this work we address the re-entrance of magic-angle phenomena (band flatness and quantum-geometric transport) in twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) subjected to strong magnetic fluxes $\pm Φ_0$, $\pm 2 Φ_0$, $\pm 3 Φ_0$... ($Φ_0 = h/e$ is the flux quantum per moiré cell). The moiré translation invariance is restored at the integer fluxes, for which we calculate the TBG band structure using accurate atomistic models with lattice relaxations. Similarly to the zero-flux physics outside the magic angle condition, the reported effect breaks down rapidly with the twist. We conclude that the magic-ang…
Large scale two-dimensional (2D) moiré superlattices are driving a revolution in designer quantum materials. The electronic interactions in these superlattices, strongly dependent on the periodicity and symmetry of the moiré pattern, critically determine the emergent properties and phase diagrams. To date, the relative twist angle between two layers has been the primary tuning parameter for a given choice of constituent crystals. Here, we establish strain as a powerful mechanism to in-situ modify the moiré periodicity and symmetry. We develop an analytically exact mathematical description for …
We uncover a new type of magic-angle phenomena when an AA-stacked graphene bilayer is twisted relative to another graphene system with band touching. In the simplest case this constitutes a trilayer system formed by an AA-stacked bilayer twisted relative to a single layer of graphene. We find multiple anisotropic Dirac cones coexisting in such twisted multilayer structures at certain angles, which we call "Dirac magic." We trace the origin of Dirac magic angles to the geometric structure of the twisted AA-bilayer Dirac cones relative to the other band-touching spectrum in the moiré reciprocal …
We report on a fully self-consistent Hartree-Fock calculation of interaction effects on the Moiré flat bands of twisted bilayer graphene, assuming that valley U(1) symmetry is respected. We use realistic band structures and interactions and focus on the charge neutrality point, where experiments have variously reported either insulating or semimetallic behavior. Restricting the search to orders for which the valley U(1) symmetry remains unbroken, we find three types of self-consistent solutions with competitive ground state energy (i) insulators that break $C_2 {\mathcal T}$ symmetry, includin…
