We study the complexity of the following related computational tasks concerning a fixed countable graph G: 1. Does a countable graph H provided as input have a(n induced) subgraph isomorphic to G? 2. Given a countable graph H that has a(n induced) subgraph isomorphic to G, find such a subgraph. The framework for our investigations is given by effective Wadge reducibility and by Weihrauch reducibility. Our work follows on "Reverse mathematics and Weihrauch analysis motivated by finite complexity theory" (Computability, 2021) by BeMent, Hirst and Wallace, and we answer several of their open questions.
The Weihrauch degrees and strong Weihrauch degrees are partially ordered structures representing degrees of unsolvability of various mathematical problems. Their study has been widely applied in computable analysis, complexity theory, and more recently, also in computable combinatorics. We answer an open question about the algebraic structure of the strong Weihrauch degrees, by exhibiting a join operation that turns these degrees into a lattice. Previously, the strong Weihrauch degrees were only known to form a lower semi-lattice. We then show that unlike the Weihrauch degrees, which are known…
We introduce the notion of the \emph{first-order part} of a problem in the Weihrauch degrees. Informally, the first-order part of a problem $\mathsf{P}$ is the strongest problem with codomaixn $ω$ that is Weihrauch reducible to $\mathsf{P}$. We show that the first-order part is always well-defined, examine some of the basic properties of this notion, and characterize the first-order parts of several well-known problems from the literature.
We study the positions in the Weihrauch lattice of parallel products of various combinatorial principles related to Ramsey's theorem. Among other results, we obtain an answer to a question of Brattka, by showing that Ramsey's theorem for pairs ($\mathsf{RT}^2_2$) is strictly Weihrauch below the parallel product of the stable Ramsey's theorem for pairs and the cohesive principle ($\mathsf{SRT}^2_2 \times \mathsf{COH}$).
In this paper we study Weihrauch reducibility for multi-valued functions on represented spaces. We call the corresponding equivalence classes Weihrauch degrees and we show that the corresponding partial order induces a lower semi-lattice with the disjoint union of multi-valued functions as greatest lower bound operation. We prove that parallelization is a closure operator for this semi-lattice and the parallelized Weihrauch degrees even form a lattice with the product of multi-valued functions as greatest lower bound operation. We show that the Medvedev lattice and hence Turing degrees can be …
In this paper we study the Weihrauch complexity of projection operators onto closed subsets of the Euclidean space. We show that some fundamental degrees of the Weihrauch lattice can be characterized in terms of such operators.
We study the computational difficulty of the problem of finding fixed points of nonexpansive mappings in uniformly convex Banach spaces. We show that the fixed point sets of computable nonexpansive self-maps of a nonempty, computably weakly closed, convex and bounded subset of a computable real Hilbert space are precisely the nonempty, co-r.e. weakly closed, convex subsets of the domain. A uniform version of this result allows us to determine the Weihrauch degree of the Browder-Goehde-Kirk theorem in computable real Hilbert space: it is equivalent to a closed choice principle, which receives a…
We study degree spectra of structures with respect to the bi-embeddability relation. The bi-embeddability spectrum of a structure is the family of Turing degrees of its bi-embeddable copies. To facilitate our study we introduce the notions of bi-embeddable triviality and basis of a spectrum. Using bi-embeddable triviality we show that several known families of degrees are bi-embeddability spectra of structures. We then characterize the bi-embeddability spectra of linear orderings and study bases of bi-embeddability spectra of strongly locally finite graphs.
In this article, we give a full description of a topological many-one degree structure of real-valued functions, recently introduced by Day-Downey-Westrick. We also point out that their characterization of the Bourgain rank of a Baire-one function of compact Polish domain can be extended to noncompact Polish domain. Finally, we clarify the relationship between the Martin conjecture and Day-Downey-Westrick's topological Turing-like reducibility, also known as parallelized continuous strong Weihrauch reducibility, for single-valued functions: Under the axiom of determinacy, we show that the cont…
In the context of second-order polynomial-time computability, we prove that there is no general function space construction. We proceed to identify restrictions on the domain or the codomain that do provide a function space with polynomial-time function evaluation containing all polynomial-time computable functions of that type. As side results we show that a polynomial-time counterpart to admissibility of a representation is not a suitable criterion for natural representations, and that the Weihrauch degrees embed into the polynomial-time Weihrauch degrees.
In this paper we study a new approach to classify mathematical theorems according to their computational content. Basically, we are asking the question which theorems can be continuously or computably transferred into each other? For this purpose theorems are considered via their realizers which are operations with certain input and output data. The technical tool to express continuous or computable relations between such operations is Weihrauch reducibility and the partially ordered degree structure induced by it. We have identified certain choice principles which are cornerstones among Weihr…
We study the algorithmic complexity of embeddings between bi-embeddable equivalence structures. We define the notions of computable bi-embeddable categoricity, (relative) $Δ^0_α$ bi-embeddable categoricity, and degrees of bi-embeddable categoricity. These notions mirror the classical notions used to study the complexity of isomorphisms between structures. We show that the notions of $Δ^0_α$ bi-embeddable categoricity and relative $Δ^0_α$ bi-embeddable categoricity coincide for equivalence structures for $α=1,2,3$. We also prove that computable equivalence structures have degree of bi-embeddabl…
