We explore the power of reservoir computing with a single oscillator in learning time series using quantum and classical models. We demonstrate that this scheme learns the Mackey--Glass (MG) chaotic time series, a solution to a delay differential equation. Our results suggest that the quantum nonlinear model is more effective in terms of learning performance compared to a classical non-linear oscillator. We develop approaches for measuring the quantumness of the reservoir during the process, proving that Lee-Jeong's measure of macroscopicity is a non-classicality measure. We note that the evaluation of the Lee-Jeong measure is computationally more efficient than the Wigner negativity. Exploring the relationship between quantumness and performance by examining a broad range of initial states and varying hyperparameters, we observe that quantumness in some cases improves the learning performance. However, our investigation reveals that an indiscriminate increase in quantumness does not consistently lead to improved outcomes, necessitating caution in its application. We discuss this phenomenon and attempt to identify conditions under which a high quantumness results in improved performance.
The dynamics of a pair of coupled harmonic oscillators in separate or common thermal environments is studied, focusing on different indicators of quantumness, such as entanglement, twin oscillators correlations and quantum discord. We compare their decay under the effect of dissipation and show, through a phase diagram, that entanglement is more likely to survive asymptotically than twin oscillators correlations.
We perform a detailed analysis of the nonclassical properties of a damped two-level system. We compute and compare three different criteria of quantumness, the $l_1$-norm of coherence, the Leggett- Garg inequality and a quantum witness based on the no-signaling in time condition. We show that all three quantum indicators decay exponentially in time as a result of the coupling to the thermal reservoir. We further demonstrate that the corresponding characteristic times are identical and given by the coherence half-life. These results quantify how violations of Leggett-Garg inequalities and nonze…
We investigate how to experimentally detect a recently proposed measure to quantify macroscopic quantum superpositions [Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 220401 (2011)], namely, "macroscopic quantumness" $\mathcal{I}$. Schemes based on overlap measurements for harmonic oscillator states and for qubit states are extensively investigated. Effects of detection inefficiency and coarse-graining are analyzed in order to assess feasibility of the schemes.
The quantumness of Dirac paticles for quantized fields in a dilatonic black hole is estimated by means of quantum channel. We develop a general Bloch vector representation of quantum channel in black hole spacetimes beyond single mode approximation. The nonclassicality of Dirac particles can be measured by the minimization of quantum coherence over all orthonormal basis sets. The quantumness of the channel decreases as the dilaton parameter increases. The interplay between the external reservoir noise and dilaton black hole on the dynamical behavior of quantum coherence and steerability is inv…
Building on work by Tsirelson, we present a family of protocols that detect the nonclassicality of suitable states of a single quantum system, under the sole assumption that the measured dynamical observable undergoes a uniform precession. The case of the harmonic oscillator was anticipated in the work by Tsirelson, which we extend. We then apply the protocols to finite-dimensional spins that undergo uniform precession in real space and find a gap between the classical and the quantum expectations for every $j\geq \frac{3}{2}$ (excluding $j=2$).
Witnessing quantumness in mesoscopic objects is an important milestone for both quantum technologies and foundational reasons. Cavity optomechanics offers the ideal system to achieve this by combing high precision optical measurements with mechanical oscillators. However, mechanical quantumness can only be established if the behaviour is incompatible with any classical description of an oscillator. After explicitly considering classical and hybrid quantum-classical descriptions of an optomechanical system, we rule out squeezing of the optical field as such a witness by showing it is also predi…

The increasing interest in these unconventional computing approaches is fueled by the availability of diverse quantum platforms suitable for implementation and the theoretical progresses in the study of complex quantum systems. In this review article, recent proposals and f…
We introduce the concept of degree of quantumness in quantum synchronization, a measure of the quantum nature of synchronization in quantum systems. Following techniques from quantum information, we propose the number of non-commuting observables that synchronize as a measure of quantumness. This figure of merit is compatible with already existing synchronization measurements, and it captures different physical properties. We illustrate it in a quantum system consisting of two weakly interacting cavity-qubit systems, which are coupled via the exchange of bosonic excitations between the cavitie…
We analyze the properties of a quantum system composed of two coherently coupled quantum oscillators and show through simulations that it fulfills the two properties required for reservoir computing: non-linearity and fading memory. We first show that the basis states of this system apply a set of nonlinear transformations on the input signals and thus can implement neurons. We then show that the system exhibits a fading memory that can be controlled by its dissipation rates. Finally we show that a strong coupling between the oscillators is important in order to ensure complex dynamics and to …
In this paper we analyze the double Caldeira-Leggett model: the path integral approach to two interacting dissipative harmonic oscillators. Assuming a general form of the interaction between the oscillators, we consider two different situations: i) when each oscillator is coupled to its own reservoir, and ii) when both oscillators are coupled to a common reservoir. After deriving and solving the master equation for each case, we analyze the decoherence process of particular entanglements in the positional space of both oscillators. To analyze the decoherence mechanism we have derived a general…
In this paper, we continue our investigation on controlling the state of a quantum harmonic oscillator, by coupling it to a reservoir composed of a sequence of qubits. Specifically, we show that sending qubits separable from each other but initialised at different states in pairs can stabilise the oscillator at squeezed states. However, only if entanglement is allowed in the reservoir qubit can we stabilise the oscillator at a wider set of squeezed states. This thus provides a proof for the necessity of involving entanglement in the reservoir qubits input to the oscillator, as regard to the st…
Quantum properties are soon subject to decoherence once the quantum system interacts with the classical environment. In this paper we experimentally test how propagation losses, in a Gaussian channel, affect the bi-partite Gaussian entangled state generated by a sub-threshold type-II optical parametric oscillator (OPO). Experimental results are discussed in terms of different quantum markers, as teleportation fidelity, quantum discord and mutual information, and continuous variables (CV) entanglement criteria. To analyse state properties we have retrieved the composite system covariance matrix…
We consider the Wigner function evolution of Fock states $|n\rangle$ linearly coupled to a Markovian bath of oscillators. In the absence of environmental coupling, apparent ``quantumness'' increases with $n$, but the presence of any environmental interaction causes high-$n$ states to lose their quantum features more rapidly than low-$n$ states. Using the negative volume of the Wigner function as a metric \cite{kenfack04}, we observe a time-dependent quantumness peak across the eigenstates.
The robust generation of quantum states in the presence of decoherence is a primary challenge for explorations of quantum mechanics at larger scales. Using the mechanical motion of a single trapped ion, we utilize reservoir engineering to generate squeezed, coherent and displaced-squeezed states as steady states in the presence of noise. We verify the created state by generating two-state correlated spin-motion Rabi oscillations resulting in high contrast measurements. For both cooling and measurement, we use spin-oscillator couplings that provide transitions between oscillator states in an en…
The quantum theory of the damped harmonic oscillator has been a subject of continual investigation since the 1930s. The obstacle to quantization created by the dissipation of energy is usually dealt with by including a discrete set of additional harmonic oscillators as a reservoir. But a discrete reservoir cannot directly yield dynamics such as Ohmic damping (proportional to velocity) of the oscillator of interest. By using a continuum of oscillators as a reservoir, we canonically quantize the harmonic oscillator with Ohmic damping and also with general damping behaviour. The dynamics of a dam…
In order to be able to study dissipation, the interaction between a single system and their environment was introduced in quantum mechanics. Master and quantum Langeving equations was derived and, also, decoherence was studied using this approach. One of the most used model in this field is a single harmonic oscillator interacting with a reservoir. In this work we solve analytically this problem in the resonance case with the evolution operator method. We use this result to study the conditional dynamics of a finite system of coupling, a bandgap quantum coupler. We study the conditional dynami…
In this paper, we analyze two different techniques based on reservoir engineering method and quantum Zeno effect for controlling decoherence of a dissipative charged oscillator in the presence of an external magnetic field. Our main focus is to investigate the sensitiveness of these decoherence control techniques on the details of different environmental spectrum ($J(ω)$), and on the crucial role played by different system and reservoir parameters, e.g., external magnetic field ($r_c$), confinement length ($r_0$), temperature (T), cut-off frequency of reservoir spectrum ($ω_{cut}$), and measur…
We study the squeezing as well as the statistical properties of the output radiation from a degenerate parametric oscillator coupled to a squeezed vacuum reservoir employing the stochastic differential equations associated with the normal ordering. It is found that the degree of squeezing of the output radiation is less than the corresponding cavity radiation. However, for output radiation the correlation of the quadrature operators evaluated at different times also exhibits squeezing, which is the reason for quenching of the overall noise in one of the quadrature components of the squeezing s…
Multi-mode entanglement is investigated in the system composed of $N$ coupled identical harmonic oscillators interacting with a common environment. We treat the problem very general by working with the Hamiltonian without the rotating-wave approximation and by considering the environment as a non-Markovian reservoir to the oscillators. We invoke an $N$-mode unitary transformation of the position and momentum operators and find that in the transformed basis the system is represented by a set of independent harmonic oscillators with only one of them coupled to the environment. Working in the Wig…
We analyse the properties of a strongly-damped quantum harmonic oscillator by means of an exact diagonalisation of the full Hamiltonian, including both the oscillator and the reservoir degrees of freedom to which it is coupled. Many of the properties of the oscillator, including its steady-state properties and entanglement with the reservoir can be understood and quantified in terms of a simple probability density, which we may associate with the ground-state frequency spectrum of the oscillator.
We show how to control spatial quantum correlations in a multimode degenerate optical parametric oscillator type I below threshold by introducing a spatially inhomogeneous medium, such as a photonic crystal, in the plane perpendicular to light propagation. We obtain the analytical expressions for all the correlations in terms of the relevant parameters of the problem and study the number of photons, entanglement, squeezing, and twin beams. Considering different regimes and configurations we show the possibility to tune the instability thresholds as well as the quantumness of correlations by br…
We consider the global thermal state of classical and quantum harmonic oscillators that interact with a reservoir. Ohmic damping of the oscillator can be exactly treated with a 1D scalar field reservoir, whereas general non-Ohmic damping is conveniently treated with a continuum reservoir of harmonic oscillators. Using the diagonalized Hamiltonian of the total system, we calculate a number of thermodynamic quantities for the damped oscillator: the mean force internal energy, mean force free energy, and another internal energy based on the free-oscillator Hamiltonian. The classical mean force en…
We present a scheme to implement a steady lightwave-photon-and-magnon entanglement in a hybrid photon-magnon system by adiabatically eliminating the auxiliary microwave cavity and effectively laser cooling a delocalized Bogoliubov mode. The system consists of magnons, lightwave and microwave photons, and phonons. The magnons are embodied by a collective motion of a large number of spins in a macroscopic ferrimagnet. To achieve an entangling interaction between magnons and lightwave photons, we drive optical cavity and magnon at the red and blue sideband associated with the mechanical resonator…
The generation of entanglement between two oscillators that interact via a common reservoir is theoretically studied. The reservoir is modeled by a one-dimensional harmonic crystal initially in thermal equilibrium. Starting from a separable state, the oscillators can become entangled after a transient time, that is of the order of the thermalization time scale. This behavior is observed at finite temperature even when the oscillators are at a distance significantly larger than the crystal's interparticle spacing. The underlying physical mechanisms can be explained by the dynamical properties o…
We address the dynamics of quantum correlations for a bipartite continuous-variable quantum system interacting with its fluctuating environment. In particular, we consider two independent quantum oscillators initially prepared in a Gaussian state, e.g. a squeezed thermal state, and compare the dynamics resulting from local noise, i.e. oscillators coupled to two independent external fields, to that originating from common noise, i.e. oscillators interacting with a single common field. We prove non-Markovianity (non-divisibility) of the dynamics in both regimes and analyze the connections betwee…
This theoretical proposal investigates how resonant interactions occurring when a harmonic oscillator is fed with a stream of entangled qubits allow us to stabilize squeezed states of the harmonic oscillator. We show that the properties of the squeezed state stabilized by this engineered reservoir, including the squeezing strength, can be tuned at will through the parameters of the "input" qubits, albeit in tradeoff with the convergence rate. We also discuss the influence of the type of entanglement in the input, from a pairwise case to a more widely distributed case. This paper can be read in…
In this paper we present a comprehensive analysis of the coherence phenomenon of two coupled dissipative oscillators. The action of a classical driving field on one of the oscillators is also analyzed. Master equations are derived for both regimes of weakly and strongly interacting oscillators from which interesting results arise concerning the coherence properties of the joint and the reduced system states. The strong coupling regime is required to achieve a large frequency shift of the oscillator normal modes, making it possible to explore the whole profile of the spectral density of the res…
System of the quantum Langevin equations for two quantum coupling oscillators within independent heat baths of quantum oscillators are obtained using a model Hamiltonian and corresponding Heisenberg equations of motion. Expressions for mean energy of coupled oscillators and their mean energy of interaction are derived and analyzed. Nonmonotonic dependence of the interaction energy versus a coupling constant is demonstrated and explained. Nontrivial dependence of the quantities as a consequence of the difference in temperatures of heat baths is shown.
In this study, we determine a violation of the Leggett-Garg inequalities due to gravitational interaction in a hybrid system consisting of a harmonic oscillator and a spatially localized superposed particle. The violation of the Leggett-Garg inequalities is discussed using the two-time quasiprobability in connection with the entanglement negativity generated by gravitational interaction. It is demonstrated that the entanglement suppresses the violation of the Leggett-Garg inequalities when one of the two times of the quasiprobability t_1 is chosen as the initial time. Further, it is shown that…
Realizing the promise of quantum information processing remains a daunting task, given the omnipresence of noise and error. Adapting noise-resilient classical computing modalities to quantum mechanics may be a viable path towards near-term applications in the noisy intermediate-scale quantum era. Here, we propose continuous variable quantum reservoir computing in a single nonlinear oscillator. Through numerical simulation of our model we demonstrate quantum-classical performance improvement, and identify its likely source: the nonlinearity of quantum measurement. Beyond quantum reservoir compu…
We study the open system dynamics of a harmonic oscillator coupled with an artificially engineered reservoir. We single out the reservoir and system variables governing the passage between Lindblad type and non-Lindblad type dynamics of the reduced system's oscillator. We demonstrate the existence of conditions under which virtual exchanges of energy between system and reservoir take place. We propose to use a single trapped ion coupled to engineered reservoirs in order to simulate quantum Brownian motion.
We explore the electromagnetic field coupled to a mechanical resonator via quadratic optomechanical interaction in the reversed dissipation regime where the mechanical damping rate is much larger than the cavity field dissipation rate. It is shown that in this regime, the cavity field effectively acquires an additional reservoir which is conditioned by the temperature of the mechanical bath as well as the mechanical damping rate. We analytically find the steady-state mean photon number and the critical temperature of the mechanical oscillator to cool or heat the coupled electromagnetic field. …
Physical potentials are routinely approximated to harmonic potentials so as to analytically solve the system dynamics. Often it is important to know when a quantum harmonic oscillator (QHO) behaves quantum mechanically and when classically. Recently Su et. al. [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 85}, 052126 (2012)] have theoretically shown that QHO exhibits quantum contextuality (QC) for a certain set of pseudospin observables. In this work, we encode the four eigenstates of a QHO onto four Zeeman product states of a pair of spin-1/2 nuclei. Using the techniques of NMR quantum information processing, we then d…
This work addresses the problem of relaxation of open systems to quasi-equilibrium states. Time-dependent density matrix of two arbitrary coupled quantum oscillators of arbitrary properties interacting with separate reservoirs is derived based on path integration. Temporal dynamics of spatial variances and covariances of the oscillators from any given time up to quasi-equilibrium steady states is studied. It is demonstrated for general case that asymptotic spatial variances of two arbitrary oscillators and their covariances achieve stationary values in the long-time limit. A comparison of stea…
In this article we extend the results presented in Ref. [Phys. Rev. A 76, 032101 (2007)] to treat quantitatively the effects of reservoirs at finite temperature in a bosonic dissipative network: a chain of coupled harmonic oscillators whichever its topology, i.e., whichever the way the oscillators are coupled together, the strength of their couplings and their natural frequencies. Starting with the case where distinct reservoirs are considered, each one coupled to a corresponding oscillator, we also analyze the case where a common reservoir is assigned to the whole network. Master equations ar…
Quantum dissipation is studied for a discrete system that linearly interacts with a reservoir of harmonic oscillators at thermal equilibrium. Initial correlations between system and reservoir are assumed to be absent. The dissipative dynamics as determined by the unitary evolution of system and reservoir is described by a Kraus map consisting of an infinite number of matrices. For all Laplace-transformed Kraus matrices exact solutions are constructed in terms of continued fractions that depend on the pair correlation functions of the reservoir.
Reservoir computing is a powerful machine learning paradigm for online time series processing. It has reached state-of-the-art performance in tasks such as chaotic time series prediction and continuous speech recognition thanks to its unique combination of high computational power and low training cost which sets it aside from alternatives such as traditionally trained recurrent neural networks, and furthermore is amenable to implementations in dedicated hardware, potentially leading to extremely compact and efficient reservoir computers. Recently the use of random quantum systems has been pro…
We present results concerning aspects of quantum thermodynamics under the background of non-Hermitian quantum mechanics for the dynamics of a quantum harmonic oscillator. Since a better control over the parameters in quantum thermodynamics processes is desired, we use concepts from collisional model to introduce a simple prototype of thermal reservoir based on $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Hamiltonians and study its effects under the thermalization process of a single harmonic oscillator prepared in a displaced thermal state. We verify that controlling the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric features of the r…
In this paper, we look into what happens to a quantum system under repeated measurements if it interacts with two independent reservoirs. In particular, we look at the behavior of a two-level system interacting with reservoirs consisting of harmonic oscillators. The interaction with one reservoir is weak with a dissipative-type coupling, while the interaction with the other reservoir is strong with a dephasing-type coupling. Using a polaron transformation, we show that the presence of the strongly coupled reservoir can actually reduce the decay rate of the quantum system due to the effect of t…
We investigate the effects of a low frequency (acoustic) phonon bath on the dynamics of a quantum dot modelled as a cascade three-level system. We show that the phonon bath appears to the upper transition of the cascade system as a broadband reservoir of inverted rather than conventional harmonic oscillators. The action of the annihilation and creation operators of the inverted oscillator are interchanges relative to those of the usual harmonic oscillator that it serves as a linear amplifier to the system, and thereby gives rise to unusual features in the dynamics of the quantum dot. We find t…
Quantum machine learning represents a promising avenue for data processing, also for purposes of sequential temporal data analysis, as recently proposed in quantum reservoir computing (QRC). The possibility to operate on several platforms and noise intermediate-scale quantum devices makes QRC a timely topic. A challenge that has not been addressed yet, however, is how to efficiently include quantum measurement in realistic protocols, while retaining the reservoir memory needed for sequential time series processing and preserving the quantum advantage offered by large Hilbert spaces. In this wo…

We extend the non-Markovian quantum state diffusion (QSD) equation to open quantum systems which exhibit multi-channel coupling to a harmonic oscillator reservoir. Open quantum systems which have multi-channel reservoir coupling are those in which canonical transformation of reservoir modes cannot reduce the number of reservoir operators appearing in the interaction Hamiltonian to one. We show that the non-Markovian QSD equation for multi-channel reservoir coupling can, in some cases, lead to an exact master equation which we derive. We then derive the exact master equation for the three-level…
