Satisfiability Modulo the Theory of Nonlinear Real Arithmetic, SMT(NRA) for short, concerns the satisfiability of polynomial formulas, which are quantifier-free Boolean combinations of polynomial equations and inequalities with integer coefficients and real variables. In this paper, we propose a local search algorithm for a special subclass of SMT(NRA), where all constraints are strict inequalities. An important fact is that, given a polynomial formula with $n$ variables, the zero level set of the polynomials in the formula decomposes the $n$-dimensional real space into finitely many components (cells) and every polynomial has constant sign in each cell. The key point of our algorithm is a new operation based on real root isolation, called cell-jump, which updates the current assignment along a given direction such that the assignment can `jump' from one cell to another. One cell-jump may adjust the values of several variables while traditional local search operations, such as flip for SAT and critical move for SMT(LIA), only change that of one variable. We also design a two-level operation selection to balance the success rate and efficiency. Furthermore, our algorithm can be easily generalized to a wider subclass of SMT(NRA) where polynomial equations linear with respect to some variable are allowed. Experiments show the algorithm is competitive with state-of-the-art SMT solvers, and performs particularly well on those formulas with high-degree polynomials.

A new algorithm for deciding the satisfiability of polynomial formulas over the reals is proposed. The key point of the algorithm is a new projection operator, called sample-cell projection operator, custom-made for Conflict-Driven Clause Learning (CDCL)-style search. Although the new operator is also a CAD (Cylindrical Algebraic Decomposition)-like projection operator which computes the cell (not necessarily cylindrical) containing a given sample such that each polynomial from the problem is sign-invariant on the cell, it is of singly exponential time complexity. The sample-cell projection op…
This paper depicts an algorithm for solving the Decision Boolean Satisfiability Problem using the binary numerical properties of a Special Decision Satisfiability Problem, parallel execution, object oriented, and short termination. The two operations: expansion and simplification are used to explains why using algebra grows the resolution steps. It is proved that its complexity has an upper bound of $2^{n-1}$ where $n$ is the number of logical variables of the given problem.
In this report, we describe three encodings of the multiple constant multiplication (MCM) problem to pseudo-boolean satisfiability (PBS), and introduce an algorithm to solve the MCM problem optimally. To the best of our knowledge, the proposed encodings and the optimization algorithm are the first formalization of the MCM problem in a PBS manner. This report evaluates the complexity of the problem size and the performance of several PBS solvers over three encodings.
Satisfiability solvers are increasingly playing a key role in software verification, with particularly effective use in the analysis of security vulnerabilities. String processing is a key part of many software applications, such as browsers and web servers. These applications are susceptible to attacks through malicious data received over network. Automated tools for analyzing the security of such applications, thus need to reason about strings. For efficiency reasons, it is desirable to have a solver that treats strings as first-class types. In this paper, we present some theories of strings…
We present novel algorithms solving the satisfiability problem and the model checking problem for Visibly Linear Dynamic Logic (VLDL) in asymptotically optimal time via a reduction to the emptiness problem for tree automata with Büchi acceptance. Since VLDL allows for the specification of important properties of recursive systems, this reduction enables the efficient analysis of such systems. Furthermore, as the problem of tree automata emptiness is well-studied, this reduction enables leveraging the mature algorithms and tools for that problem in order to solve the satisfiability problem and …
Recent years have witness remarkable performance improvements in maximum satisfiability (MaxSAT) solvers. In practice, MaxSAT algorithms often target the most generic MaxSAT formulation, whereas dedicated solvers, which address specific subclasses of MaxSAT, have not been investigated. This paper shows that a wide range of optimization and decision problems are either naturally formulated as MaxSAT over Horn formulas, or permit simple encodings using Horn MaxSAT. Furthermore, the paper also shows how linear time decision procedures for Horn formulas can be used for developing novel algorithms …
We propose a version of WalkSAT algorithm, named as BetaWalkSAT. This method uses probabilistic reasoning for biasing the starting state of the local search algorithm. Beta distribution is used to model the belief over boolean values of the literals. Our results suggest that, the proposed BetaWalkSAT algorithm can outperform other uninformed local search approaches for complex boolean satisfiability problems.
Hyperproperties are properties that refer to multiple computation traces. This includes many information-flow security policies, such as observational determinism, (generalized) noninterference, and noninference, and other system properties like symmetry or Hamming distances between in error-resistant codes. We introduce MGHyper, a tool for automatic satisfiability checking and model generation for hyperproperties expressed in HyperLTL. Unlike previous satisfiability checkers, MGHyper is not limited to the decidable $\exists^* \forall^*$ fragment of HyperLTL, but provides a semi-decisionproced…

For Boolean satisfiability problems, the structure of the solution space is characterized by the solution graph, where the vertices are the solutions, and two solutions are connected iff they differ in exactly one variable. In 2006, Gopalan et al. studied connectivity properties of the solution graph and related complexity issues for CSPs, motivated mainly by research on satisfiability algorithms and the satisfiability threshold. They proved dichotomies for the diameter of connected components and for the complexity of the st-connectivity question, and conjectured a trichotomy for the connecti…
We give a sufficient condition under which every finite-satisfiable formula of a given PCTL fragment has a model with at most doubly exponential number of states (consequently, the finite satisfiability problem for the fragment is in 2-EXPSPACE). The condition is semantic and it is based on enforcing a form of ``progress'' in non-bottom SCCs contributing to the satisfaction of a given PCTL formula. We show that the condition is satisfied by PCTL fragments beyond the reach of existing methods.
We study preprocessing techniques for clause normal forms of LTL formulas. Applying the mechanism of labelled clauses enables us to reinterpret LTL satisfiability as a set of purely propositional problems and thus to transfer simplification ideas from SAT to LTL. We demonstrate this by adapting variable and clause elimination, a very effective preprocessing technique used by modern SAT solvers. Our experiments confirm that even in the temporal setting substantial reductions in formula size and subsequent decrease of solver runtime can be achieved.
Whether the satisfiability of any formula F of propositional calculus can be determined in polynomial time is an open question. I propose a simple procedure based on some real world mechanisms to tackle this problem. The main result is the blueprint for a machine which is able to test any formula in conjunctive normal form (CNF) for satisfiability in linear time. The device uses light and some electrochemical properties to function. It adapts itself to the scope of the problem without growing exponentially in mass with the size of the formula. It requires infinite precision in its components i…

In classic program synthesis algorithms, such as counterexample-guided inductive synthesis (CEGIS), the algorithms alternate between a synthesis phase and an oracle (verification) phase. Many synthesis algorithms use a white-box oracle based on satisfiability modulo theory (SMT) solvers to provide counterexamples. But what if a white-box oracle is either not available or not easy to work with? We present a framework for solving a general class of oracle-guided synthesis problems which we term synthesis modulo oracles. In this setting, oracles may be black boxes with a query-response interface …
Satisfiability modulo theory (SMT) consists in testing the satisfiability of first-order formulas over linear integer or real arithmetic, or other theories. In this survey, we explain the combination of propositional satisfiability and decision procedures for conjunctions known as DPLL(T), and the alternative "natural domain" approaches. We also cover quantifiers, Craig interpolants, polynomial arithmetic, and how SMT solvers are used in automated software analysis.
In this paper, we discussed CNF-SAT problem (NP-Complete problem) and analysis two solutions that can solve the problem, the PL-Resolution algorithm and the WalkSAT algorithm. PL-Resolution is a sound and complete algorithm that can be used to determine satisfiability and unsatisfiability with certainty. WalkSAT can determine satisfiability if it finds a model, but it cannot guarantee to find a model even there exists one. However, WalkSAT is much faster than PL-Resolution, which makes WalkSAT more practical; and we have analysis the performance between these two algorithms, and the performanc…
We address the problem of verifying the satisfiability of Constrained Horn Clauses (CHCs) based on theories of inductively defined data structures, such as lists and trees. We propose a transformation technique whose objective is the removal of these data structures from CHCs, hence reducing their satisfiability to a satisfiability problem for CHCs on integers and booleans. We propose a transformation algorithm and identify a class of clauses where it always succeeds. We also consider an extension of that algorithm, which combines clause transformation with reasoning on integer constraints. Vi…
We provide a parameterized polynomial algorithm for the propositional model counting problem #SAT, the runtime of which is single-exponential in the rank-width of a formula. Previously, analogous algorithms have been known -- e.g.~[Fischer, Makowsky, and Ravve] -- with a single-exponential dependency on the clique-width of a formula. Our algorithm thus presents an exponential runtime improvement (since clique-width reaches up to exponentially higher values than rank-width), and can be of practical interest for small values of rank-width. We also provide an algorithm for the MAX-SAT problem alo…
Unit two-variable-per-inequality (UTVPI) constraints form one of the largest class of integer constraints which are polynomial time solvable (unless P=NP). There is considerable interest in their use for constraint solving, abstract interpretation, spatial databases, and theorem proving. In this paper we develop a new incremental algorithm for UTVPI constraint satisfaction and implication checking that requires O(m + n log n + p) time and O(n+m+p) space to incrementally check satisfiability of m UTVPI constraints on n variables and check implication of p UTVPI constraints.
HyperLTL, the extension of Linear Temporal Logic by trace quantifiers, is a uniform framework for expressing information flow policies by relating multiple traces of a security-critical system. HyperLTL has been successfully applied to express fundamental security policies like noninterference and observational determinism, but has also found applications beyond security, e.g., distributed protocols and coding theory. However, HyperLTL satisfiability is undecidable as soon as there are existential quantifiers in the scope of a universal one. To overcome this severe limitation to applicability,…
Despite the recent advance of automated program verification, reasoning about recursive data structures remains as a challenge for verification tools and their backends such as SMT and CHC solvers. To address the challenge, we introduce the notion of symbolic automatic relations (SARs), which combines symbolic automata and automatic relations, and inherits their good properties such as the closure under Boolean operations. We consider the satisfiability problem for SARs, and show that it is undecidable in general, but that we can construct a sound (but incomplete) and automated satisfiability …
The paper explores the correspondence between balanced incomplete block designs (BIBD) and certain linear CNF formulas by identifying the points of a block design with the clauses of the Boolean formula and blocks with Boolean variables. Parallel classes in BIBDs correspond to XSAT solutions in the corresponding formula. This correspondence allows for transfers of results from one field to the other. As a new result we deduce from known satisfiability theorems that the problem of finding a parallel class in a partially balanced incomplete block design is NP-complete.
The practical success of Boolean Satisfiability (SAT) solvers stems from the CDCL (Conflict-Driven Clause Learning) approach to SAT solving. However, from a propositional proof complexity perspective, CDCL is no more powerful than the resolution proof system, for which many hard examples exist. This paper proposes a new problem transformation, which enables reducing the decision problem for formulas in conjunctive normal form (CNF) to the problem of solving maximum satisfiability over Horn formulas. Given the new transformation, the paper proves a polynomial bound on the number of MaxSAT resol…
This is a brief overview on the background behind the test set formulas generated by the QBM tool. After establishing its application context, its formal approach to the generation of QBF formulas and the concrete test set formulas are described. Finally, some related work will be credited and the source to obtain the open-source tool will be identified.
This paper develops a parallel computational solver for computing all satifying assignments of a Boolean system of equations defined by Boolean functions of several variables. While there are we known solvers for satisfiability of Boolean formulas in CNF form, these are designed primarily for deciding satisfiability of the formula and do not address the problem of finding all satisfying solutions. Moreover development of parallel solvers for satisfiability problems is still an unfinished problem of Computer Science. The solver proposed in this paper is aimed at representing all solutions of Bo…
Let $Z(F)$ be the number of solutions of a random $k$-satisfiability formula $F$ with $n$ variables and clause density $α$. Assume that the probability that $F$ is unsatisfiable is $O(1/\log(n)^{1+\e})$ for $\e>0$. We show that (possibly excluding a countable set of `exceptional' $α$'s) the number of solutions concentrate in the logarithmic scale, i.e., there exists a non-random function $ϕ(α)$ such that, for any $δ>0$, $(1/n)\log Z(F)\in [ϕ-δ,ϕ+δ]$ with high probability. In particular, the assumption holds for all $α<1$, which proves the above concentration claim in the whole satisfiability r…
We introduce a new algorithm for checking satisfiability based on a calculus of Dependency sequents (D-sequents). Given a CNF formula F(X), a D-sequent is a record stating that under a partial assignment a set of variables of X is redundant in formula \exists{X}[F]. The D-sequent calculus is based on operation join that forms a new D-sequent from two existing D-sequents. The new algorithm solves the quantified version of SAT. That is, given a satisfiable formula F, it, in general, does not produce an assignment satisfying F. The new algorithm is called DS-QSAT where DS stands for Dependency Se…
Hyperproperties, like observational determinism or symmetry, cannot be expressed as properties of individual computation traces, because they describe a relation between multiple computation traces. HyperLTL is a temporal logic that captures such relations through trace variables, which are introduced through existential and universal trace quantifiers and can be used to refer to multiple computations at the same time. In this paper, we study the satisfiability problem of HyperLTL. We show that the problem is PSPACE-complete for alternation-free formulas (and, hence, no more expensive than LTL…
For formulas F of propositional calculus I introduce a "metavariable" MF and show how it can be used to define an algorithm for testing satisfiability. MF is a formula which is true/false under all possible truth assignments iff F is satisfiable/unsatisfiable. In this sense MF is a metavariable with the "meaning" 'F is SAT'. For constructing MF a group of transformations of the basic variables ai is used which corresponds to 'flipping" literals to their negation. The whole procedure corresponds to branching algorithms where a formula is split with respect to the truth values of its variables, …
For Boolean satisfiability problems, the structure of the solution space is characterized by the solution graph, where the vertices are the solutions, and two solutions are connected iff they differ in exactly one variable. For this implicitly defined graph, we here study the st-connectivity and connectivity problems. Building on the work of Gopalan et al. ("The Connectivity of Boolean Satisfiability: Computational and Structural Dichotomies", 2006/2009), we first investigate satisfiability problems given by CSPs, more exactly CNF(S)-formulas with constants (as considered in Schaefer's famous …
We consider a variant of the Boolean satisfiability problem where a subset E of the propositional variables appearing in formula Fsat encode a symmetric, transitive, binary relation over N elements. Each of these relational variables, e[i,j], for 1 <= i < j <= N, expresses whether or not the relation holds between elements i and j. The task is to either find a satisfying assignment to Fsat that also satisfies all transitivity constraints over the relational variables (e.g., e[1,2] & e[2,3] ==> e[1,3]), or to prove that no such assignment exists. Solving this satisfiability problem is the final…
In this paper, we compare two alternative mechanisms for deciding the validity of first-order formulas over finite domains supported by the mathematical model checker RISCAL: first, the original approach of semantic evaluation (based on an implementation of the denotational semantics of the RISCAL language) and, second, the later approach of SMT solving (based on satisfiability preserving translations of RISCAL formulas to SMT-LIB formulas as inputs for SMT solvers). After a short presentation of the two approaches and a discussion of their fundamental pros and cons, we quantitatively evaluate…
We introduce a multi-sorted stratified syllogistic, called 4LQSR, admitting variables of four sorts and a restricted form of quantification over variables of the first three sorts, and prove that it has a solvable satisfiability problem by showing that it enjoys a small model property. Then, we consider the fragments (4LQSR)^h of 4LQSR, consisting of 4LQSR-formulae whose quantifier prefixes have length bounded by h > 1 and satisfying certain syntactic constraints, and prove that each of them has an NP-complete satisfiability problem. Finally we show that the modal logic K45 can be expressed in…
Existing approaches to synthesize reactive systems from declarative specifications mostly rely on Binary Decision Diagrams (BDDs), inheriting their scalability issues. We present novel algorithms for safety specifications that use decision procedures for propositional formulas (SAT solvers), Quantified Boolean Formulas (QBF solvers), or Effectively Propositional Logic (EPR). Our algorithms are based on query learning, templates, reduction to EPR, QBF certification, and interpolation. A parallelization combines multiple algorithms. Our optimizations expand quantifiers and utilize unreachable st…
This paper presents a tableau calculus for finding a model for a set-satisfiable finite set of formulas of an extended fuzzy logic BL, a fuzzy logic BL with additional Baaz connective and the involutive negation, if such a model exists. The calculus is a generalisation of a tableau calculus for BL, which is based on the decomposition theorem for a continuous t-norm. The aforementioned tableau calculus for BL is used to prove that a formula A of the extended BL is valid with respect to all continuous t-norms or to find a continuous t-norm * and assignment V of propositional atoms to [0,1] such …

The most successful parallel SAT and MaxSAT solvers follow a portfolio approach, where each thread applies a different algorithm (or the same algorithm configured differently) to solve a given problem instance. The main goal of building a portfolio is to diversify the search process being carried out by each thread. As soon as one thread finishes, the instance can be deemed solved. In this paper we present a new open source distributed solver for MaxSAT solving that addresses two issues commonly found in multicore parallel solvers, namely memory contention and scalability. Preliminary results …
The paper focuses on the automatic generating of the witnesses for the word equation satisfiability problem by means of specializing an interpreter which tests whether a composition of variable substitutions of a given word equation system produces its solution. We specialize such an interpreter w.r.t. the equation system, while the substitutions are unknown. We show that several variants of such interpreters, when specialized using the basic unfold/fold specialization methods, are able to construct the whole solution sets for some classes of the word equations whose left- and right-hand sides…

We propose Differentiable Satisfiability and Differentiable Answer Set Programming (Differentiable SAT/ASP) for multi-model optimization. Models (answer sets or satisfying truth assignments) are sampled using a novel SAT/ASP solving approach which uses a gradient descent-based branching mechanism. Sampling proceeds until the value of a user-defined multi-model cost function reaches a given threshold. As major use cases for our approach we propose distribution-aware model sampling and expressive yet scalable probabilistic logic programming. As our main algorithmic approach to Differentiable SAT…
