Recently, researchers have gradually realized that in some cases, the self-supervised pre-training on large-scale Internet data is better than that of high-quality/manually labeled data sets, and multimodal/large models are better than single or bimodal/small models. In this paper, we propose a robust audio representation learning method WavBriVL based on Bridging-Vision-and-Language (BriVL). WavBriVL projects audio, image and text into a shared embedded space, so that multi-modal applications can be realized. We demonstrate the qualitative evaluation of the image generated from WavBriVL as a shared embedded space, with the main purposes of this paper:(1) Learning the correlation between audio and image;(2) Explore a new way of image generation, that is, use audio to generate pictures. Experimental results show that this method can effectively generate appropriate images from audio.

The massive growth of self-supervised learning (SSL) has been witnessed in language, vision, speech, and audio domains over the past few years. While discrete label prediction is widely adopted for other modalities, the state-of-the-art audio SSL models still employ reconstruction loss for pre-training. Compared with reconstruction loss, semantic-rich discrete label prediction encourages the SSL model to abstract the high-level audio semantics and discard the redundant details as in human perception. However, a semantic-rich acoustic tokenizer for general audio pre-training is usually not stra…
While efficient architectures and a plethora of augmentations for end-to-end image classification tasks have been suggested and heavily investigated, state-of-the-art techniques for audio classifications still rely on numerous representations of the audio signal together with large architectures, fine-tuned from large datasets. By utilizing the inherited lightweight nature of audio and novel audio augmentations, we were able to present an efficient end-to-end network with strong generalization ability. Experiments on a variety of sound classification sets demonstrate the effectiveness and robu…

Representation learning from unlabeled data has been of major interest in artificial intelligence research. While self-supervised speech representation learning has been popular in the speech research community, very few works have comprehensively analyzed audio representation learning for non-speech audio tasks. In this paper, we propose a self-supervised audio representation learning method and apply it to a variety of downstream non-speech audio tasks. We combine the well-known wav2vec 2.0 framework, which has shown success in self-supervised learning for speech tasks, with parameter-effici…

Building Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems from scratch is significantly challenging, mostly due to the time-consuming and financially-expensive process of annotating a large amount of audio data with transcripts. Although several unsupervised pre-training models have been proposed, applying such models directly might still be sub-optimal if more labeled, training data could be obtained without a large cost. In this paper, we present a weakly supervised framework for constructing ASR systems with massive video data. As videos often contain human-speech audios aligned with subtitles, w…

Recent neural waveform synthesizers such as WaveNet, WaveGlow, and the neural-source-filter (NSF) model have shown good performance in speech synthesis despite their different methods of waveform generation. The similarity between speech and music audio synthesis techniques suggests interesting avenues to explore in terms of the best way to apply speech synthesizers in the music domain. This work compares three neural synthesizers used for musical instrument sounds generation under three scenarios: training from scratch on music data, zero-shot learning from the speech domain, and fine-tuning-…
This paper will describe a novel approach to the cocktail party problem that relies on a fully convolutional neural network (FCN) architecture. The FCN takes noisy audio data as input and performs nonlinear, filtering operations to produce clean audio data of the target speech at the output. Our method learns a model for one specific speaker, and is then able to extract that speakers voice from babble background noise. Results from experimentation indicate the ability to generalize to new speakers and robustness to new noise environments of varying signal-to-noise ratios. A potential applicati…

The novelty of this study consists in a multi-modality approach to scene classification, where image and audio complement each other in a process of deep late fusion. The approach is demonstrated on a difficult classification problem, consisting of two synchronised and balanced datasets of 16,000 data objects, encompassing 4.4 hours of video of 8 environments with varying degrees of similarity. We first extract video frames and accompanying audio at one second intervals. The image and the audio datasets are first classified independently, using a fine-tuned VGG16 and an evolutionary optimised …
This paper describes FBK's submission to the end-to-end English-German speech translation task at IWSLT 2018. Our system relies on a state-of-the-art model based on LSTMs and CNNs, where the CNNs are used to reduce the temporal dimension of the audio input, which is in general much higher than machine translation input. Our model was trained only on the audio-to-text parallel data released for the task, and fine-tuned on cleaned subsets of the original training corpus. The addition of weight normalization and label smoothing improved the baseline system by 1.0 BLEU point on our validation set.…
