Cosmological models with inflation and those with bounce have their own strengths and weaknesses. Here we construct a model in which a phase of bounce is followed by a viable inflationary phase. This incorporates several advantages of both and hence, is a more viable model for cosmic evolution. We explore scenarios wherein the bouncing phase smoothly transits to an inflationary one, with the pivot scale leaving the Hubble horizon during the latter era, thereby maintaining consistency with observations. Staying within the ambit of Einstein-Hilbert gravity augmented by the inflaton, we ensure a pre-inflationary bounce by introducing a second scalar field that helps engineer the requisite violation of the null energy condition. Potential ghost instabilities can be mitigated by invoking a non-trivial coupling between the two scalar fields.
We examine the dynamics of a closed cosmology whose matter source is that of a conformally coupled scalar field with a broken ${\rm SO}(1,1)$ symmetry, which correspond to the $α$-attractors proposed by Linde and Kallosh. Following a field redefinition, such models give rise to "T-model" inflationary potentials, whose dynamics provide both an inflationary phase and a classical bounce. We show that the universe can undergo bounces far from the regime of quantum gravity. We analyse perturbations on this background with particular attention given to the effects of a double-bouncing scenario (with…
The aim of this paper is to probe the features of the bouncing cosmology with the current observational data. Basing on bounce inflation model, with high derivative term, we propose a general parametrization of primordial power spectrum which includes the typical bouncing parameters, such as bouncing time-scale, and energy scale. By applying Markov Chain Monto Carlo analysis with current data combination of Planck 2015, BAO and JLA, we report the posterior probability distributions of the parameters. We find that, bouncing models can well explain CMB observations, especially the deficit and os…
We calculate how primordial anisotropies in the background space-time affect the evolution of cosmological perturbations for bouncing alternatives to inflation, like ekpyrosis and the matter bounce scenario. We find that the leading order effect of anisotropies in the contracting phase of the universe is to induce anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background with a very concrete form: a scale-invariant quadrupolar angular distribution. Sub-leading effects are the generation of higher-order moments in the angular distribution, as well as cross-correlations between scalar and tensor modes. We…
In this letter, we argue that the past of the Universe, extrapolated from standard physics and measured cosmological parameters, might be a non-singular bounce. We also show that, in this framework, quite stringent constraints can be put on the reheating temperature and number of inflationary e-folds, basically fixing $T_{RH}\sim T_{GUT}$ and $N\sim 70$. We draw some conclusions about the shape of the inflaton potential and raise the "naturalness" issue in this context. Finally, we argue that this could open a very specific window on the "pre big bounce" universe.
The dynamics of bouncing universes is characterized by violating certain coordinate invariant restrictions on the total energy-momentum tensor, customarily referred to as energy conditions. Although there could be epochs where the null energy condition is locally violated, it may perhaps be enforced in an averaged sense. Explicit examples of this possibility are investigated in different frameworks.
We construct a class of viable bouncing models that are conformally related to cosmological inflation. There are three main difficulties in constructing such a model: (i) A stable (attractor) solution, (ii) A non-singular bounce, and (iii) to bypass the no-go theorem that states that simultaneously maintaining the observational bounds on the tensor-to-scalar ratio and the non-Gaussian scalar spectrum are not possible. We show that a non-minimal coupling of the scalar field helps to bypass these difficulties and provides a viable bouncing model with a naturally occurring reheating epoch briefly…
As our understanding of the past in a bouncing universe is limited, it becomes difficult to propose a cosmological model which can give some understanding of the causal structure of the bouncing universe. In this article we address the issue related to the particle horizon problem in the bouncing universe models. It is shown that in many models the particle horizon does not exist, and consequently the horizon problem is trivially solved. In some cases a bouncing universe can have a particle horizon and we specify the conditions for its existence. In the absence of a particle horizon the Hubble…
The results from Planck2015, when combined with earlier observations from WMAP, ACT, SPT and other experiments, were the first observations to disfavor the "classic" inflationary paradigm. To satisfy the observational constraints, inflationary theorists have been forced to consider plateau-like inflaton potentials that introduce more parameters and more fine-tuning, problematic initial conditions, multiverse-unpredictability issues, and a new 'unlikeliness problem.' Some propose turning instead to a "postmodern" inflationary paradigm in which the cosmological properties in our observable unive…
We review the status of bouncing cosmologies as alternatives to cosmological inflation for providing a description of the very early universe, and a source for the cosmological perturbations which are observed today. We focus on the motivation for considering bouncing cosmologies, the origin of fluctuations in these models, and the challenges which various implementations face.
We find a class of solutions for a homogeneous and isotropic universe in which the initially expanding universe stops expanding, experiences contraction, and then expands again (the "bounce"), in the framework of Einstein gravity with a real scalar field without violating the null energy condition nor encountering any singularities. Two essential ingredients for the bouncing universe are the positive spatial curvature and the scalar potential which becomes flatter at large field values. Depending on the initial condition, either the positive curvature or the negative potential stops the cosmic…
The fundamental difficulty in constructing a viable classical bouncing model is to evade the no-go theorem that states that, simultaneously maintaining the observational bounds on the tensor-to-scalar ratio and the non-Gaussian scalar spectrum is not possible. Furthermore, constructing the bouncing phase leads to numerous instabilities such as gradient, ghost, and so on. Most importantly, the model fails to be an attractor, in general, meaning that the solution heavily depends on the initial conditions, resulting in anisotropic (BKL) instability in the system. In this paper, using conformal tr…
We consider the possibility to produce a bouncing universe in the framework of scalar-tensor gravity when the scalar field has a nonconformal coupling to the Ricci scalar. We prove that bouncing universes regular in the future with essentially the same dynamics as for the conformal coupling case do exist when the coupling deviates slightly from it. This is found numerically for more substantial deviations as well. In some cases however new features are found like the ability of the system to leave the effective phantom regime.
Homogeneous and isotropic, nonsingular, bouncing world models are designed to evade the initial singularity at the beginning of the cosmic expansion. Here, we study the thermodynamics of the subset of these models governed by general relativity. Considering the entropy of matter, radiation and that the entropy of the apparent horizon is proportional to its area, we argue that these models do not respect the generalised second law of thermodynamics, also away from the bounce.
In this paper, we study a class of higher derivative, non-local gravity which admits homogeneous and isotropic non-singular, bouncing universes in the absence of matter. At the linearized level, the theory propagates only a scalar degree of freedom, and no vector or tensor modes. The scalar can be made free from perturbative ghost instabilities, and has oscillatory and bounded evolution across the bounce.
Bouncing scenarios offer an alternative to the inflationary paradigm for the generation of perturbations in the early universe. Recently, there has been a surge in interest in examining the issue of primordial magnetogenesis in the context of bouncing universes. As in the case of inflation, the conformal invariance of the electromagnetic action needs to be broken in bouncing scenarios in order to generate primordial magnetic fields which correspond to observed strengths today. The non-minimal coupling, which typically depends on a scalar field that possibly drives the homogeneous background, l…
We consider the history of the universe from a possible big bang or a bounce into a late period of a unified interacting dark energy - dark matter model. The model is based on the Two Measures Theories (T.M.T.) which introduces a metric independent volume element and this allows us to construct a unification of dark energy and dark matter. A generalization of the T.M.T. gives a diffusive non-conservative stress energy momentum tensor in addition to the conserved stress energy tensor which appear in Einstein equations. These leads to a formulation of interacting DE-DM dust models in the form of…
We analyze the causal structure of McVittie spacetime for a classical bouncing cosmological model. In particular, we compute the trapping horizons of the metric and integrate the trajectories of radial null geodesics before, during, and after the bounce takes place. In the contracting phase up to the occurrence of the bounce, a dynamical black hole is present. When the universe reaches a certain minimum scale, the trapping horizons disappear and the black hole ceases to exist. After the bounce, the central weak singularity becomes naked. In the expanding phase, for large positive values of the…
We consider the Palatini formalism of the Born-Infeld gravity. In the Palatini formalism, the propagating mode is only graviton, whose situation is different from that in the metric formalism. We discuss about the FRW cosmology by using an effective potential. Especially we consider the condition that the bouncing could occur. We also give some speculations about the black hole formation
We calculate the gravitational waves (GW) spectrum produced in various Early Universe scenarios from gauge field sources, thus generalizing earlier inflationary calculations to bouncing cosmologies. We consider generic couplings between the gauge fields and the scalar field dominating the energy density of the Universe. We analyze the requirements needed to avoid a backreaction that will spoil the background evolution. When the scalar is coupled only to $F \tilde F$ term, the sourced GW spectrum is exponentially enhanced and parametrically the square of the vacuum fluctuations spectrum, ${\cal…
We propose that several of the anomalies that have been observed at large angular scales in the CMB have a common origin in a cosmic bounce that took place before the inflationary era. The bounce introduces a new physical scale in the problem, which breaks the almost scale invariance of inflation. As a result, the state of scalar perturbations at the onset of inflation is no longer the Bunch-Davies vacuum, but it rather contains excitations and non-Gaussianity, which are larger for infrared modes. We argue that the combined effect of these excitations and the correlations between CMB modes and…
We present a model for a classical, non-singular bouncing cosmology without violation of the null energy condition (NEC). The field content is General Relativity plus a real scalar field with a canonical kinetic term and only renormalizable, polynomial type self-interaction for the scalar field in the Jordan frame. The universe begins vacuum-energy dominated and is contracting at $t=-\infty$. We consider a closed universe with a positive spatial curvature, which is responsible for the universe bouncing without any NEC violation. An $Rϕ^2$ coupling between the Ricci scalar and the scalar field …
In this article, we present a bouncing cosmology inspired by a family of regular black holes. This scale-dependent cosmology deviates from the cosmological principle by means of a scale factor which depends on the time and the radial coordinate as well. The model is isotropic but not perfectly homogeneous. That is, this cosmology describes a universe almost homogeneous only for large scales, such as our observable universe.
In this paper, we study the pre-inflationary dynamics for the power-law potential $(V(ϕ) \propto ϕ^n)$ with $n<2$ in the framework of loop quantum cosmology. In the case where the kinetic energy of the inflaton dominates at the initial, the evolution of the universe can always be divided into three different phases prior to preheating: {\em bouncing, transition and slow-roll inflation}. During the bouncing phase, the evolution of the expansion factor is independent not only on the initial conditions but also the inflationary potentials, and is given explicitly by an analytical solution. In con…
Recently, we had numerically shown that, for a non-minimal coupling that is a simple power of the scale factor, scale invariant magnetic fields arise in a class of bouncing universes. In this work, we {\it analytically} evaluate the spectrum of magnetic and electric fields generated in a sub-class of such models. We illustrate that, for cosmological scales which have wavenumbers much smaller than the wavenumber associated with the bounce, the shape of the spectrum is preserved across the bounce. Using the analytic solutions obtained, we also illustrate that the problem of backreaction is sever…
Being free from the initial singularity, bouncing cosmology serves as a promising alternative to inflation. However, the entropy production during the post-bounce phase is still unclear. In this work, we use a newly unveiled DM candidate (EQFIDM), which can directly freeze in thermal equilibrium shortly after bounce, to trace the entropy-producing decay process of residual bouncing field (RBF). Specifically, we present a model-independent formalism to obtain all nine possible types of the entropy-producing decay of RBF within a generic bouncing universe, and show that, due to the entropy produ…
What happens to the most general closed oscillating universes in general relativity? We sketch the development of interest in cyclic universes from the early work of Friedmann and Tolman to modern variations introduced by the presence of a cosmological constant. Then we show what happens in the cyclic evolution of the most general closed anisotropic universes provided by the Mixmaster universe. We show that in the presence of entropy increase its cycles grow in size and age, increasingly approaching flatness. But these cycles also grow increasingly anisotropic at their expansion maxima. If the…
We consider f(Q) extended symmetric teleparallel cosmologies, where Q is the non-metricity scalar, and constrain its functional form through the order reduction method. By using this technique, we are able to reduce and integrate the field equations and thus to select the corresponding models giving rise to bouncing cosmology. The selected Lagrangian is then used to develop the Hamiltonian formalism and to obtain the Wave Function of the Universe which suggests that classical observable universes can be recovered according to the Hartle Criterion.
