Continuous measurements of the position of an oscillator become projective on position eigenstates when the measurements are made faster than the coherent evolution. We evidence an effect of this transition on a spin oscillator within an ensemble of $2\times10^{10}$ room-temperature atoms by observing correlations between the quadratures of the meter light field. These correlations squeeze the fluctuations of the light quadratures below the vacuum level. When the measurement is slower than the oscillation, we generate 11.5 dB and detect 8.5 dB of squeezing in a tunable band that is a fraction of the resonance frequency. When the measurement is as fast as the oscillation, we detect 4.7 dB of squeezing that spans more than one decade of frequencies below the resonance. Our results demonstrate a new regime of continuous quantum measurements on material oscillators, and set a new benchmark for the performance of a linear quantum sensor.
The fidelity for two displaced squeezed thermal states is computed using the fact that the corresponding density operators belong to the oscillator semigroup.
We present squeezed light that is robust against spatial mode mismatch (beam displacement, tilt, and beam-size difference), which is generated from a self-imaging optical parametric oscillator below the threshold. We investigate the quantum properties of the generated light when the oscillator is detuned from the ideal self-imaging condition for stable operation. We find that the generated light is more robust to mode mismatch than single-mode squeezed light having the same squeezing level, and it even outperforms the single-mode infinitely squeezed light as the strength of mode mismatch incre…
We consider the thermodynamic properties of the squeezed vacuum state of a frequency--modulated quantum harmonic oscillator. We analytically relate the squeezing parameter to the irreversible work and the degree of nonadiabaticity of the frequency transformation. We furthermore determine the optimal modulation that leads to maximal squeezing, and discuss its implementation as well as the detection of squeezing in single cold ion traps.
We study a single two-level system coupled resonantly to an oscillator mode or a large spin. By adiabatically turning on a linear driving term on the oscillator or the spin, the eigenstates of the system change character and its ground state evolves into squeezed states of the oscillator or the spin. The robust generation of such states is of interest in many experimental systems with applications for sensing and quantum information processing.
We construct nonlinear squeezed states of a generalized isotonic oscillator potential. We demonstrate the non-existence of dual counterpart of nonlinear squeezed states in this system. We investigate statistical properties exhibited by the squeezed states, in particular Mandel's parameter, second-order correlation function, photon number distributions and parameter $A_3$ in detail. We also examine the quadrature and amplitude-squared squeezing effects. Finally, we derive expression for the $s$-parameterized quasi-probability distribution function of these states. All these information about th…
A scheme is presented for entangling two separated nanomechanical oscillators by injecting broad band squeezed vacuum light and laser light into the ring cavity. We work in the resolved sideband regime. We find that in order to obtain the maximum entanglement of the two oscillators, the squeezing parameter of the input light should be about 1. We report significant entanglement over a very wide range of power levels of the pump and temperatures of the environment.
We introduce a new method for constructing squeezed states for the 2D isotropic harmonic oscillator. Based on the construction of coherent states in [1], we define a new set of ladder operators for the 2D system as a linear combination of the x and y ladder operators and construct the SU(2) coherent states. The new ladder operators are used for generalizing the squeezing operator to 2D and the SU(2) coherent states play the role of the Fock states in the expansion of the 2D squeezed states. We discuss some properties of the 2D squeezed states.
We show how to prepare and directly measure the squeezed states of nanomechanical oscillators. An intense pulse interacts with a dielectric mirror in a cavity. The quadratic coupling between the optical pulse and the oscillator results in the reduction of a quadrature variance of the massive oscillator. Differently from others, the proposed scheme here requires neither any post-action on the optical field nor a preparation of a nonclassical optical field. Depending on the initial temperature of the system, the squeezing of the variance under the vacuum limit can be achieved only by a few repet…
We experimentally investigate a mechanical squeezed state realized in a parametrically-modulated membrane resonator embedded in an optical cavity. We demonstrate that a quantum characteristic of the squeezed dynamics can be revealed and quantified even in a moderately warm oscillator, through the analysis of motional sidebands. We provide a theoretical framework for quantitatively interpreting the observations and present an extended comparison with the experiment. A notable result is that the spectral shape of each motional sideband provides a clear signature of a quantum mechanical squeezed …
We generate squeezed state of light at 860 nm with a monolithic optical parametric oscillator. The optical parametric oscillator consists of a periodically poled KTiOPO_4 crystal, both ends of which are spherically polished and mirror-coated. We achieve both phase matching and cavity resonance by controlling only the temperature of the crystal. We observe up to -8.0 dB of squeezing with the bandwidth of 142 MHz. Our technique makes it possible to drive many monolithic cavities simultaneously by a single laser. Hence our monolithic optical parametric oscillator is quite suitable to continuous-v…
We report a 65MHz-bandwidth triangular-shaped optical parametric oscillator (OPO) for squeezed vacuum generation at 860nm. The triangle structure of our OPO enables the round-trip length to reach 45mm as a ring cavity, which provides a counter circulating optical path available for introducing a probe beam or generating another squeezed vacuum. Hence our OPO is suitable for the applications in high-speed quantum information processing where two or more squeezed vacua form a complicated interferometer, like continuous-variable quantum teleportation. With a homemade, broadband and low-loss homod…
Alter and Yamamoto [Phys. Rev. A 53, R2911 (1996)] claimed to consider ``protective measurements'' [Phys. Lett. A 178, 38 (1993)] which we have recently introduced. We show that the measurements discussed by Alter and Yamamoto ``are not'' the protective measurements we proposed. Therefore, their results are irrelevant to the nature of protective measurements.
By using the invariant method we find one-parameter squeezed Gaussian states for both time-independent and time-dependent oscillators. The squeezing parameter is expressed in terms of energy expectation value for time-independent case and represents the degree of mixing positive and negative frequency solutions for time-dependent case. A {\it minimum uncertainty proposal} is advanced to select uniquely vacuum states at each moment of time. We show that the Gaussian states with minimum uncertainty coincide with the true vacuum state for time-independent oscillator and the Bunch-Davies vacuum fo…
We present a new technique for the detection of two-mode squeezed states of light that allows for a simple characterization of these quantum states. The usual detection scheme, based on heterodyne measurements, requires the use of a local oscillator with a frequency equal to the mean of the frequencies of the two modes of the squeezed field. As a result, unless the two modes are close in frequency, a high-frequency shot-noise-limited detection system is needed. We propose the use of a bichromatic field as the local oscillator in the heterodyne measurements. By the proper selection of the frequ…
We demonstrate a diode-laser-pumped system for generation of quadrature squeezing and polarization squeezing. Due to their excess phase noise, diode lasers are challenging to use in phase-sensitive quantum optics experiments such as quadrature squeezing. The system we present overcomes the phase noise of the diode laser through a combination of active stabilization and appropriate delays in the local oscillator beam. The generated light is resonant to the rubidium D1 transition at 795nm and thus can be readily used for quantum memory experiments.
Some predictions of quantum mechanics are in contrast with the macroscopic realm of everyday experience, in particular those originated by the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, encoded in the non-commutativity of some measurable operators. Nonetheless, in the last decade opto-mechanical experiments have actualized macroscopic mechanical oscillators exhibiting such non-classical properties. A key indicator is the asymmetry in the strength of the motional sidebands generated in an electromagnetic field that measures interferometrically the oscillator position. This asymmetry is a footprint of th…
Quantum models for synchronously pumped type I optical parametric oscillators (SPOPO) are presented. The study of the dynamics of SPOPOs, which typically involves millions of coupled signal longitudinal modes, is significantly simplified when one considers the ?supermodes?, which are independent linear superpositions of all the signal modes diagonalizing the parametric interaction. In terms of these supermodes the SPOPO dynamics becomes that of about a hundred of independent, single mode degenerate OPOs, each of them being a squeezer. One derives a general expression for the squeezing spectrum…
In this paper, we theoretically investigate the displacement and momentum fluctuations spectra of the movable mirror in a standard optomechanical system driven by a finite bandwidth squeezed vacuum light accompanying a coherent laser field. Two cases in which the squeezed vacuum is generated by degenerated and non-degenerate parametric oscillators (DPO and NDPO) are considered. We find that for the case of finite bandwidth squeezed vacuum injection, the two spectra exhibit unique features, which strongly differ from those of broadband squeezing excitation. In particular, the spectra exhibit a …
We study the evolution of the hybrid entangled squeezed states of the qubit-oscillator system in the strong coupling domain. Following the adiabatic approximation we obtain the reduced density matrices of the qubit and the oscillator degrees of freedom. The oscillator reduced density matrix is utilized to calculate the quasiprobability distributions such as the Sudarshan-Glauber diagonal P -representation, the Wigner W -distribution, and the nonnegative Husimi Q-function. The negativity associated with the W -distribution acts as a measure of the nonclassicality of the state. The existence of …
Squeezed states of harmonic oscillators are a central resource for continuous-variable quantum sensing, computation and communication. Here we propose a method for the generation of very good approximations to highly squeezed vacuum states with low excess anti-squeezing using only a few oscillator-qubit coupling gates through a Rabi-type interaction Hamiltonian. This interaction can be implemented with several different methods, which has previously been demonstrated in superconducting circuit and trapped-ion platforms. The protocol is compatible with other protocols manipulating quantum harmo…
Light in which the quantum fluctuations have been squeezed is often proposed as a means of obtaining an improved phase reference compared to that available from coherent light. Such a phase reference contains information about the phase of the squeezed light, so it is important to calculate the limits to the amount of ``phase information'' available. I define a phase resolution and show how this scales as we increase the number of photons available when using squeezed light generated by a parametric oscillator. Simple schemes for creating squeezed coherent light using a beam-splitter and an in…
In this paper, we propose two quantum optomechanical arrangements that permit the dissipation-enabled generation of steady two-mode mechanical squeezed states. In the first setup, the mechanical oscillators are placed in a two-mode optical resonator while in the second setup the mechanical oscillators are located in two coupled single-mode cavities. We show analytically that for an appropriate choice of the pump parameters, the two mechanical oscillators can be driven by cavity dissipation into a stationary two-mode squeezed vacuum, provided that mechanical damping is negligible. The effect of…
The formalism for computing the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for laser radar is reviewed and applied to the tasks of target detection, direction-finding, and phase change estimation with squeezed light. The SNR for heterodyne detection of coherent light using a squeezed local oscillator is lower than that obtained using a coherent local oscillator. This is true for target detection, for phase estimation, and for direction-finding with a split detector. Squeezing the local oscillator also lowers SNR in balanced homodyne and heterodyne detection of coherent light. Loss places an upper bound on th…
In this article, results from the previous paper (I) are applied to calculations of squeezed states for such well-known systems as the harmonic oscillator, free particle, linear potential, oscillator with a uniform driving force, and repulsive oscillator. For each example, expressions for the expectation values of position and momentum are derived in terms of the initial position and momentum, as well as in the $(α,z)$- and in the $(z,α)$-representations described in I. The dependence of the squeezed-state uncertainty products on the time and on the squeezing parameters are determined for each…
Over the years, quite a few proposals have been put forward by various groups to exploit the Stern-Gerlach effect to create stable macroscopic spatial superpositions between micron-sized neutral test masses over appreciably long time scales. One such proposal put forward by Bose et al. and co-workers in 2017 uses this idea to show that two masses cannot be gravitationally entangled if not for the presence of a quantum coherent mediator. A key aspect of this approach involves the measure of the visibility of the SG-interferometer, a quantity that provides an estimate of the degree of spin coher…
We theoretically describe the quantum properties of a large Fresnel number degenerate optical parametric oscillator with spherical mirrors that is pumped by a Gaussian beam. The resonator is tuned so that the resonance frequency of a given transverse mode family coincides with the down-converted frequency. After demonstrating that only the lower orbital angular momentum (OAM) Laguerre-Gauss modes are amplified above threshold, we focus on the quantum properties of the rest of (classically empty) modes. We find that combinations of opposite OAM (Hybrid Laguerre-Gauss modes) can exhibit arbitrar…
Continuous observation on an oscillator is known to result in quantum back-action which limits the knowledge acquired by the measurement. A careful balance between the information obtained and the back-action disturbance leads to a limit known as the standard quantum limit. The means to surpass this limit by modulating the measurement strength with the period proportional to half period of the oscillation has been proposed decades ago (Braginskii et al 1978 JETP Lett. 27 276; Thorne et al 1978 Phys. Rev. Lett. 40 667; Braginskii et al 1980 Science 209 547). Such modulated or stroboscopic obser…
A challenge of modern physics is to investigate the quantum behavior of a bulk material object, for instance a mechanical oscillator. We have earlier demonstrated that by coupling a mechanical oscillator to the energy levels of embedded rare-earth ion dopants, it is possible to prepare such a resonator in a low phonon number state. Here, we describe how to extend this protocol in order to prepare momentum- and position squeezed states, and we analyze how the obtainable degree of squeezing depends on the initial conditions and on the coupling of the oscillator to its thermal environment.
The Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill (GKP) encoding of a qubit within an oscillator provides a number of advantages when used in a fault-tolerant architecture for quantum computing, most notably that Gaussian operations suffice to implement all single- and two-qubit Clifford gates. The main drawback of the encoding is that the logical states themselves are challenging to produce. Here we present a method for generating optical GKP-encoded qubits by coupling an atomic ensemble to a squeezed state of light. Particular outcomes of a subsequent spin measurement of the ensemble herald successful generatio…
We investigate the creation of squeezed states of a vibrating membrane or a movable mirror in an opto-mechanical system. An optical cavity is driven by squeezed light and couples via radiation pressure to the membrane/mirror, effectively providing a squeezed heat-bath for the mechanical oscillator. Under the conditions of laser cooling to the ground state, we find an efficient transfer of squeezing with roughly 60% of light squeezing conveyed to the membrane/mirror (on a dB scale). We determine the requirements on the carrier frequency and the bandwidth of squeezed light. Beyond the conditions…
Squeezed states of light constitute an important nonclassical resource in the field of high-precision measurements, e.g. gravitational wave detection, as well as in the field of quantum information, e.g. for teleportation, quantum cryptography, and distribution of entanglement in quantum computation networks. Strong squeezing in combination with high purity, high bandwidth and high spatial mode quality is desirable in order to achieve significantly improved performances contrasting any classical protocols. Here we report on the observation of the strongest squeezing to date of 11.5 dB, togethe…
We study the exact decoherence dynamics of the entangled squeezed state of two single-mode optical fields interacting with two independent and uncorrelated environments. We analyze in detail the non-Markovian effects on the entanglement evolution of the initially entangled squeezed state for different environmental correlation time scales. We find that the environments have dual actions on the system: backaction and dissipation. In mparticular, when the environmental correlation time scale is comparable to the time scale for significant change in the system, the backaction would counteract the…
We study an optomechanical system for the purpose of generating a nonclassical mechanical state when a mechanical oscillator is quadratically coupled to a single-mode cavity field driven by a squeezed optical field. The system corresponds to a regime where the optical dissipation dominates both the mechanical damping and the optomechanical coupling. We identify that multi-phonon processes emerge in the optomechanical system and show that a mechanical oscillator prepared in the ground state will evolve into an amplitude-squared squeezed vacuum state. The Wigner distribution of the steady state …
Employing the quantum Hamiltonian describing the interaction of two-mode light (signal-idler modes) generated by a nondegenerate parametric oscillator (NDPO) with two uncorrelated squeezed vacuum reservoirs (USVR), we derive the master equation. The corresponding Fokker-Planck equation for the Q-function is then solved employing a propagator method developed in Ref. \cite{1}. Making use of this Q-function, we calculate the quadrature fluctuations of the optical system. From these results we infer that the signal-idler modes are in squeezed states and the squeezing occurs in the first quadratur…
This theoretical proposal investigates how resonant interactions occurring when a harmonic oscillator is fed with a stream of entangled qubits allow us to stabilize squeezed states of the harmonic oscillator. We show that the properties of the squeezed state stabilized by this engineered reservoir, including the squeezing strength, can be tuned at will through the parameters of the "input" qubits, albeit in tradeoff with the convergence rate. We also discuss the influence of the type of entanglement in the input, from a pairwise case to a more widely distributed case. This paper can be read in…
Type-II Optical Parametric Oscillators are efficient sources of quadrature squeezed or polarization squeezed light, intensity correlated beams, and entangled light. We review here the different levels of quantum correlations and entanglement that are reached in this device, and present some applications.
We propose and analyse a feasible experimental scheme for a quantum force sensor based on the elimination of back-action noise through coherent quantum noise cancellation (CQNC) in a hybrid atom-cavity optomechanical setup assisted with squeezed vacuum injection. The force detector, which allows for a continuous, broad-band detection of weak forces well below the standard quantum limit (SQL), is formed by a single optical cavity simultaneously coupled to a mechanical oscillator and to an ensemble of ultracold atoms. The latter acts as a negative-mass oscillator so that atomic noise cancels exa…
We analyze the two-mode squeezed harmonic oscillator and the $k$th-order harmonic generation within the framework of Bargmann-Hilbert spaces of entire functions. For the displaced, single-mode squeezed and two-mode squeezed harmonic oscillators, we derive the exact, closed-form expressions for their energies and wave functions. For the $k$th-order harmonic generation with $k\geq 3$, our result indicates that it does not have eigenfunctions and is thus ill-defined in the Bargmann-Hilbert space.
We explore squeezed coherent states of a 3-dimensional generalized isotonic oscillator whose radial part is the newly introduced generalized isotonic oscillator whose bound state solutions have been shown to admit the recently discovered $X_1$-Laguerre polynomials. We construct a complete set of squeezed coherent states of this oscillator by exploring the squeezed coherent states of the radial part and combining the latter with the squeezed coherent states of the angular part. We also prove that the three mode squeezed coherent states resolve the identity operator. We evaluate Mandel's $Q$-par…
We demonstrate control of a trapped-ion quantum harmonic oscillator in a squeezed Fock state basis, using engineered Hamiltonians analogous to the Jaynes-Cummings and anti-Jaynes-Cummings forms. We demonstrate that for squeezed Fock states with low $n$ the engineered Hamiltonians reproduce the $\sqrt{n}$ scaling of the matrix elements which is typical of Jaynes-Cummings physics, and also examine deviations due to the finite wavelength of our control fields. Starting from a squeezed vacuum state, we apply sequences of alternating transfer pulses which allow us to climb the squeezed Fock state l…
The Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP) is a modification of Heisenberg's Principle predicted by several theories of Quantum Gravity. It consists of a modified commutator between position and momentum. In this work we compute potentially observable effects that GUP implies for the harmonic oscillator, coherent and squeezed states in Quantum Mechanics. In particular, we rigorously analyze the GUP-perturbed harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian, defining new operators that act as ladder operators on the perturbed states. We use these operators to define the new coherent and squeezed states. We com…
Mesoscopic superpositions of distinguishable coherent states provide an analog to the Schrödinger's cat thought experiment. For mechanical oscillators these have primarily been realised using coherent wavepackets, for which the distinguishability arises due to the spatial separation of the superposed states. Here, we demonstrate superpositions composed of squeezed wavepackets, which we generate by applying an internal-state dependent force to a single trapped ion initialized in a squeezed vacuum state with 9 dB reduction in the quadrature variance. This allows us to characterise the initial sq…
Pulses applied to an inhomogeneously broadened set of harmonic oscillators, previously prepared in squeezed states, can lead to a recovery of coherence, manifesting itself as echoes, similar to those exhibited by an ensemble of spins when excited by properly designed electromagnetic pulses. Such echoes, of classical or quantum nature, are expected to arise in the squeezing of linear systems of various sorts and, in particular, light and vibrational modes.
The de Broglie-Bohm quantum trajectories are found in analytically closed forms for the eigenstates and the coherent state of the Lewis-Riesenfeld (LR) invariant of a time-dependent harmonic oscillator. It is also shown that an eigenstate (a coherent state) of an invariant can be interpreted as squeezed states obtained by squeezing an eigenstate (a coherent state) of another invariant. This provides ways for a whole description of squeezed states.
In the framework of Lindblad theory for open quantum systems, we calculate the entropy of a damped quantum harmonic oscillator which is initially in a quasi-free state. The maximally predictable states are identified as those states producing the minimum entropy increase after a long enough time. In general, the states with a squeezing parameter depending on the environment's diffusion coefficients and friction constant are singled out, but if the friction constant is much smaller than the oscillator's frequency, coherent states (or thermalized coherent states) are obtained as the preferred cl…
We experimentally study a protocol of using the broadband high frequency squeezed vacuum to detect the low-frequency signal. In this scheme, the lower sideband field of the squeezed light carries the low frequency modulation signal and the two strong coherent light fields are applied as the bichromatic local oscillator in the homodyne detection to measure the quantum entanglement of the upper and lower sideband for the broadband squeezed light. The power of one of the local oscillators for detecting the upper sideband can be adjusted to optimize the conditional squeezing in the low frequency r…
The interference pattern in electron double-slit diffraction is a hallmark of quantum mechanics. A long standing question for stochastic electrodynamics (SED) is whether or not it is capable of reproducing such effects, as interference is a manifestation of quantum coherence. In this study, we use excited harmonic oscillators to directly test this quantum feature in SED. We use two counter-propagating dichromatic laser pulses to promote a ground-state harmonic oscillator to a squeezed Schrödinger cat state. Upon recombination of the two well-separated wavepackets, an interference pattern emerg…
