In the present work, we have investigated the problem of estimating parameters of several exponential distributions with ordered scale parameters under the linex loss function. We have considered estimating ordered scale parameters when the location parameters are known and unknown. For every case, we consider a class of equivariant estimators, and sufficient condition is obtained under which this class of estimators improves upon the usual estimator. Using this result, we have shown that the restricted maximum likelihood estimator is inadmissible. Finally, for every case, we conduct a simulation study to compare the risk performance of the proposed estimators.
For stationary sequences, under general local and asymptotic dependence restrictions, any limiting point process for time normalized upcrossings of high levels is a compound Poisson process, i.e., there is a clustering of high upcrossings, where the underlying Poisson points represent cluster positions, and the multiplicities correspond to cluster sizes. For such classes of stationary sequences there exists the upcrossings index $η,$ $0\leq η\leq 1,$ which is directly related to the extremal index $θ,$ $0\leq θ\leq 1,$ for suitable high levels. In this paper we consider the problem of estimati…
In many families of distributions, maximum likelihood estimation is intractable because the normalization constant for the density which enters into the likelihood function is not easily available. The score matching estimator of Hyvärinen (2005) provides an alternative where this normalization constant is not required. The corresponding estimating equations become linear for an exponential family. The score matching estimator is shown to be consistent and asymptotically normally distributed for such models, although not necessarily efficient. Gaussian linear concentration models are examples …
We propose a novel approach for density estimation with exponential families for the case when the true density may not fall within the chosen family. Our approach augments the sufficient statistics with features designed to accumulate probability mass in the neighborhood of the observed points, resulting in a non-parametric model similar to kernel density estimators. We show that under mild conditions, the resulting model uses only the sufficient statistics if the density is within the chosen exponential family, and asymptotically, it approximates densities outside of the chosen exponential f…
A central problem in Binary Hypothesis Testing (BHT) is to determine the optimal tradeoff between the Type I error (referred to as false alarm) and Type II (referred to as miss) error. In this context, the exponential rate of convergence of the optimal miss error probability -- as the sample size tends to infinity -- given some (positive) restrictions on the false alarm probabilities is a fundamental question to address in theory. Considering the more realistic context of a BHT with a finite number of observations, this paper presents a new non-asymptotic result for the scenario with monotonic…
Chen and Lio (Computational Statistics and Data Analysis 54: 1581-1591, 2010) proposed five methods for estimating the parameters of generalized exponential distribution under progressive type-I interval censoring scheme. Unfortunately, among them, the proposed EM algorithm is incorrect. Here, we propose the correct EM algorithm and compare its performance with the maximum likelihood estimators and that proposed by Chen and Lio (2010) in a simulation study.
We study the existence, strong consistency and asymptotic normality of estimators obtained from estimating functions, that are p-dimensional martingale transforms. The problem is motivated by the analysis of evolutionary clustered data, with distributions belonging to the exponential family, and which may also vary in terms of other component series. Within a quasi-likelihood approach, we construct estimating equations, which accommodate different forms of dependency among the components of the response vector and establish multivariate extensions of results on linear and generalized linear mo…
This paper is devoted to study a new three- parameters model called the Exponential Flexible Weibull extension (EFWE) distribution which exhibits bathtub-shaped hazard rate. Some of it's statistical properties are obtained including ordinary and incomplete moments, quantile and generating functions, reliability and order statistics. The method of maximum likelihood is used for estimating the model parameters and the observed Fisher's information matrix is derived. We illustrate the usefulness of the proposed model by applications to real data.

We introduce a method for the theoretical analysis of exponential random graph models. The method is based on a large-deviations approximation to the normalizing constant shown to be consistent using theory developed by Chatterjee and Varadhan [European J. Combin. 32 (2011) 1000-1017]. The theory explains a host of difficulties encountered by applied workers: many distinct models have essentially the same MLE, rendering the problems ``practically'' ill-posed. We give the first rigorous proofs of ``degeneracy'' observed in these models. Here, almost all graphs have essentially no edges or are e…
An Accurate Standard Error Estimation for Quadratic Exponential Logistic Regressions by Applying Generalized Estimating Equations to Pseudo-Likelihoods
Le Cam's method (or the two-point method) is a commonly used tool for obtaining statistical lower bound and especially popular for functional estimation problems. This work aims to explain and give conditions for the tightness of Le Cam's lower bound in functional estimation from the perspective of convex duality. Under a variety of settings it is shown that the maximization problem that searches for the best two-point lower bound, upon dualizing, becomes a minimization problem that optimizes the bias-variance tradeoff among a family of estimators. For estimating linear functionals of a distri…
In this article we propose a locally adaptive strategy for estimating a function from its Exponential Radon Transform (ERT) data, without prior knowledge of the smoothness of functions that are to be estimated. We build a non-parametric kernel type estimator and show that for a class of functions comprising a wide Sobolev regularity scale, our proposed strategy follows the minimax optimal rate up to a $\log{n}$ factor. We also show that there does not exist an optimal adaptive estimator on the Sobolev scale when the pointwise risk is used and in fact the rate achieved by the proposed estimator…
Targeted maximum likelihood estimation (TMLE) is a general method for estimating parameters in semiparametric and nonparametric models. Each iteration of TMLE involves fitting a parametric submodel that targets the parameter of interest. We investigate the use of exponential families to define the parametric submodel. This implementation of TMLE gives a general approach for estimating any smooth parameter in the nonparametric model. A computational advantage of this approach is that each iteration of TMLE involves estimation of a parameter in an exponential family, which is a convex optimizati…
This paper proposes a max-test for testing (possibly infinitely) many zero parameter restrictions in an extremum estimation framework. The test statistic is formed by estimating key parameters one at a time based on many empirical loss functions that map from a low dimension parameter space, and choosing the largest in absolute value from these individually estimated parameters. The parsimoniously parametrized loss identify whether the original parameter of interest is or is not zero. Estimating fixed low dimension sub-parameters ensures greater estimator accuracy, does not require a sparsity …
Estimating the contact angle of a virus infected saliva droplet is seen to be an important area of research as it presents an idea about the drying time of the respective droplet and in turn of the growth of the underlying pandemic. In this paper we extend the data presented by Balusamy, Banerjee and Sahu [Lifetime of sessile saliva droplets in the context of SARS-CoV-2, Int. J. Heat Mass Transf. 123, 105178 (2021)], where the contact angles are fitted using a newly proposed half-circular wrapped-exponential model, and a sequential confidence interval estimation approach is established which l…
In this paper, we introduce a new distribution generated by Lindley random variable which offers a more flexible model for modelling lifetime data. Various statistical properties like distribution function, survival function, moments, entropy, and limiting distribution of extreme order statistics are established. Inference for a random sample from the proposed distribution is investigated and maximum likelihood estimation method is used for estimating parameters of this distribution. The applicability of the proposed distribution is shown through real data sets.
The efficient modeling for disorder in a phenomena depends on the chosen score and objective functions. The main parameters in modeling are location, scale and shape. The exponential power distribution known as generalized Gaussian is extensively used in modeling. In real world, the observations are member of different parametric models or disorder in a data set exists. In this study, estimating equations for the parameters of exponential power distribution are derived to have robust and also efficient M-estimators when the data set includes disorder or contamination. The robustness property o…
To perform a queuing analysis or design in a communications context, we need to estimate the values of the input parameters, specifically the mean of the arrival rate and service time. In this paper, we propose an approach for estimating the arrival rate of Poisson processes and the average service time for servers under the assumption that the service time is exponential. In particular, we derive sample size (i.e., the number of i.i.d. observations) required to obtain an estimate satisfying a pre-specified relative accuracy with a given confidence level. A remarkable feature of this approach …
This work studies the large sample properties of the posterior-based inference in the curved exponential family under increasing dimension. The curved structure arises from the imposition of various restrictions on the model, such as moment restrictions, and plays a fundamental role in econometrics and others branches of data analysis. We establish conditions under which the posterior distribution is approximately normal, which in turn implies various good properties of estimation and inference procedures based on the posterior. In the process we also revisit and improve upon previous results …
Recently, G.~Yanev obtained a characterization of the exponential family of distributions in terms of a functional equation for certain mixture densities. The purpose of this note is twofold: we extend Yanev's theorem by relaxing a restriction on the sign of mixture coefficients and, in addition, obtain a similar characterization for the Laplace family of distributions.
This paper studies distributed binary test of statistical independence under communication (information bits) constraints. While testing independence is very relevant in various applications, distributed independence test is particularly useful for event detection in sensor networks where data correlation often occurs among observations of devices in the presence of a signal of interest. By focusing on the case of two devices because of their tractability, we begin by investigating conditions on Type I error probability restrictions under which the minimum Type II error admits an exponential b…
Exponential families comprise a broad class of statistical models and parametric families like normal distributions, binomial distributions, gamma distributions or exponential distributions. Thereby the formal representation of its probability distributions induces a confined intrinsic structure, which appears to be that of a dually flat statistical manifold. Conversely it can be shown, that any dually flat statistical manifold, which is given by a regular Bregman divergence uniquely induced a regular exponential family, such that exponential families may - with some restrictions - be regarded…
Let $X_{1}=(W_{1},Y_{1}),\ldots,X_{n}=(W_{n},Y_{n})$ be $n$ pairs of independent random variables. We assume that, for each $i\in\{1,\ldots,n\}$, the conditional distribution of $Y_{i}$ given $W_{i}$ belongs to a one-parameter exponential family with parameter ${\boldsymbolγ}^{\star}(W_{i})\in{\mathbb{R}}$, or at least, is close enough to a distribution of this form. The objective of the present paper is to estimate these conditional distributions on the basis of the observation ${\boldsymbol{X}}=(X_{1},\ldots,X_{n})$ and to do so, we propose a model selection procedure together with a non-asy…
In this paper we propose a new lifetime model, called the odd generalized exponential gompertz distribution, We obtain some of its mathematical properties. Some structural properties of the new distribution are studied. The method of maximum likelihood method is used for estimating the model parameters and the observed Fisher's information matrix is derived. We illustrate the usefulness of the proposed model by applications to real data.
This paper shows that the Conditional Quantile Treatment Effect on the Treated can be identified using a combination of (i) a conditional Distributional Difference in Differences assumption and (ii) an assumption on the conditional dependence between the change in untreated potential outcomes and the initial level of untreated potential outcomes for the treated group. The second assumption recovers the unknown dependence from the observed dependence for the untreated group. We also consider estimation and inference in the case where all of the covariates are discrete. We propose a uniform infe…
We introduce a directed, weighted random graph model, where the edge-weights are independent and beta-distributed with parameters depending on their endpoints. We will show that the row- and column-sums of the transformed edge-weight matrix are sufficient statistics for the parameters, and use the theory of exponential families to prove that the ML estimate of the parameters exists and is unique. Then an algorithm to find this estimate is introduced together with convergence proof that uses properties of the digamma function. Simulation results and applications are also presented.
We extend projection theorems concerning Hellinger and Jones et al. divergences to the continuous case. These projection theorems reduce certain estimation problems on generalized exponential models to linear problems. We introduce the notion of regularity for generalized exponential models and show that the projection theorems in this case are similar to the ones in discrete and canonical case. We also apply these ideas to solve certain estimation problems concerning Student and Cauchy distributions.
In this paper we propose a new lifetime model, called the odd generalized exponential linear failure rate distribution. Some statistical properties of the proposed distribution such as the moments, the quantiles, the median, and the mode are investigated. The method of maximum likelihood is used for estimating the model parameters. An applications to real data is carried out to illustrate that the new distribution is more flexible and effective than other popular distributions in modeling lifetime data.
We provide a development that unifies, simplifies and extends considerably a number of minimax results in the restricted parameter space literature. Various applications follow, such as that of estimating location or scale parameters under a lower (or upper) bound restriction, location parameter vectors restricted to a polyhedral cone, scale parameters subject to restricted ratios or products, linear combinations of restricted location parameters, location parameters bounded to an interval with unknown scale, quantiles for location-scale families with parametric restrictions and restricted cov…
Estimating divergences in a consistent way is of great importance in many machine learning tasks. Although this is a fundamental problem in nonparametric statistics, to the best of our knowledge there has been no finite sample exponential inequality convergence bound derived for any divergence estimators. The main contribution of our work is to provide such a bound for an estimator of Rényi-$α$ divergence for a smooth Hölder class of densities on the $d$-dimensional unit cube $[0, 1]^d$. We also illustrate our theoretical results with a numerical experiment.
