For families of Hamiltonians defined by parts that are local, the most general definition of a symmetry algebra is the commutant algebra, i.e., the algebra of operators that commute with each local part. Thinking about symmetry algebras as commutant algebras allows for the treatment of conventional symmetries and unconventional symmetries (e.g., those responsible for weak ergodicity breaking phenomena) on equal algebraic footing. In this work, we discuss two methods for numerically constructing this commutant algebra starting from a family of Hamiltonians. First, we use the equivalence of this problem to that of simultaneous block-diagonalization of a given set of local operators, and discuss a probabilistic method that has been found to work with probability 1 for both Abelian and non-Abelian symmetries or commutant algebras. Second, we map this problem onto the problem of determining frustration-free ground states of certain Hamiltonians, and we use ideas from tensor network algorithms to efficiently solve this problem in one dimension. These numerical methods are useful in detecting standard and non-standard conserved quantities in families of Hamiltonians, which includes examples of regular symmetries, Hilbert space fragmentation, and quantum many-body scars, and we show many such examples. In addition, they are necessary for verifying several conjectures on the structure of the commutant algebras in these cases, which we have put forward in earlier works. Finally, we also discuss similar methods for the inverse problem of determining local operators with a given symmetry or commutant algebra, which connects to existing methods in the literature. A special case of this construction reduces to well-known ``Eigenstate to Hamiltonian" methods for constructing Hermitian local operators that have a given state as an eigenstate.
We study the phenomenon of Hilbert space fragmentation in isolated Hamiltonian and Floquet quantum systems using the language of commutant algebras, the algebra of all operators that commute with each term of the Hamiltonian or each gate of the circuit. We provide a precise definition of Hilbert space fragmentation in this formalism as the case where the dimension of the commutant algebra grows exponentially with the system size. Fragmentation can hence be distinguished from systems with conventional symmetries such as $U(1)$ or $SU(2)$, where the dimension of the commutant algebra grows polyn…

We show that the existence of string order in a given quantum state is intimately related to the presence of a local symmetry by proving that both concepts are equivalent within the framework of finitely correlated states. Once this connection is established, we provide a complete characterization of local symmetries in these states. The results allow to understand in a straightforward way many of the properties of string order parameters, like their robustness/fragility under perturbations and their typical disappearance beyond strictly one-dimensional lattices. We propose and discuss an alte…
We study the Andreev edge state on the semi-infinite triangular lattice with different pairing symmetries and boundary topologies. We find a rich phase diagram of zero energy Andreev edge states that is a unique fingerprint of each of the possible pairing symmetries. We propose to pin down the pairing symmetry in recently discovered Na_xCoO_2 material by the Fourier-transformed scanning tunneling spectroscopy for the edge state. A surprisingly rich phase diagram is found and explained by a general gauge argument and mapping to 1D tight-binding model. Extensions of this work are discussed at th…
An unconventional magnet may be mapped onto a simple ferromagnet by the existence of a high-symmetry point. Knowledge of conventional ferromagnetic systems may then be carried over to provide insight into more complex orders. Here we demonstrate how an unsupervised and interpretable machine-learning approach can be used to search for potential high-symmetry points in unconventional magnets without any prior knowledge of the system. The method is applied to the classical Heisenberg-Kitaev model on a honeycomb lattice, where our machine learns the transformations that manifest its hidden $O(3)$ …
We employ strange correlators to detect 2D subsystem symmetry-protected topological (SSPT) phases which are nontrivial topological phases protected by subsystem symmetries. Specifically, we analytically construct efficient strange correlators in the 2D cluster model in the presence of a uniform magnetic field and then perform the projector Quantum Monte Carlo simulation within the quantum annealing scheme. We find that strange correlators show the long-range correlation in the SSPT phase, from which we define strange order parameters to characterize the topological phase transition between the…
Subsystem symmetry protected topological (SSPT) order is a type of quantum order that is protected by symmetries acting on lower-dimensional subsystems of the entire system. In this paper, we show how SSPT order can be characterized and detected by a constant correction to the entanglement area law, similar to the topological entanglement entropy. Focusing on the paradigmatic two-dimensional cluster phase as an example, we use tensor network methods to give an analytic argument that almost all states in the phase exhibit the same correction to the area law, such that this correction may be use…
We introduce a numerical method for identifying topological order in two-dimensional models based on one-dimensional bulk operators. The idea is to identify approximate symmetries supported on thin strips through the bulk that behave as string operators associated to an anyon model. We can express these ribbon operators in matrix product form and define a cost function that allows us to efficiently optimize over this ansatz class. We test this method on spin models with abelian topological order by finding ribbon operators for $\mathbb{Z}_d$ quantum double models with local fields and Ising-li…
Using density-matrix renormalization-group calculations for infinite cylinders, we elucidate the properties of the spin-liquid phase of the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice. We find four distinct ground-states characteristic of a non-chiral, $Z_2$ topologically ordered state with vison and spinon excitations. We shed light on the interplay of topological ordering and global symmetries in the model by detecting fractionalization of time-reversal and space-group dihedral symmetries in the anyonic sectors, which leads to coexistence of symmetry protected a…
