This paper deals with an inertial proximal algorithm that contains a Tikhonov regularization term, in connection to the minimization problem of a convex lower semicontinuous function $f$. We show that for appropriate Tikhonov regularization parameters the value of the objective function in the sequences generated by our algorithm converges fast (with arbitrary rate) to the global minimum of the objective function and the generated sequences converges weakly to a minimizer of the objective function. We also obtain the fast convergence of the discrete velocities towards zero and some sum estimates. Nevertheless, our main goal is to obtain strong convergence results and also pointwise and sum estimates for the same constellation of the parameters involved. Our analysis reveals that the extrapolation coefficient and the Tikhonov regularization coefficient are strongly correlated and there is a critical setting of the parameters that separates the cases when strong respective weak convergence results can be obtained.
Fast convergence rates and trajectory convergence of a Tikhonov regularized inertial primal\mbox{-}dual dynamical system with time scaling and vanishing damping
In a Hilbert space, we provide a fast dynamic approach to the hierarchical minimization problem which consists in finding the minimum norm solution of a convex minimization problem. For this, we study the convergence properties of the trajectories generated by a damped inertial dynamic with Tikhonov regularization. When the time goes to infinity, the Tikhonov regularization parameter is supposed to tend towards zero, not too fast, which is a key property to make the trajectories strongly converge towards the minimizer of $f$ of minimum norm. According to the structure of the heavy ball method …
In a Hilbertian framework, for the minimization of a general convex differentiable function $f$, we introduce new inertial dynamics and algorithms that generate trajectories and iterates that converge fastly towards the minimizer of $f$ with minimum norm. Our study is based on the non-autonomous version of the Polyak heavy ball method, which, at time $t$, is associated with the strongly convex function obtained by adding to $f$ a Tikhonov regularization term with vanishing coefficient $ε(t)$. In this dynamic, the damping coefficient is proportional to the square root of the Tikhonov regulariza…
Combining Strong Convergence, Values Fast Convergence and Vanishing of Gradients for a Proximal Point Algorithm Using Tikhonov Regularization in a Hilbert Space
In a Hilbert space setting $\mathcal H$, we study the convergence properties as $t \to + \infty$ of the trajectories of the second-order differential equation \begin{equation*} \mbox{(AVD)}_{α, ε} \quad \quad \ddot{x}(t) + \fracα{t} \dot{x}(t) + \nabla Φ(x(t)) + ε(t) x(t) =0, \end{equation*} where $\nablaΦ$ is the gradient of a convex continuously differentiable function $Φ: \mathcal H \to \mathbb R$, $α$ is a positive parameter, and $ε(t) x(t)$ is a Tikhonov regularization term, with $\lim_{t \to \infty}ε(t) =0$. In this damped inertial system, the damping coefficient $\fracα{t}$ vanishes asy…
In this paper, we introduce an inertial version of the Proximal Incremental Aggregated Gradient method (PIAG) for minimizing the sum of smooth convex component functions and a possibly nonsmooth convex regularization function. Theoretically, we show that the inertial Proximal Incremental Aggregated Gradiend (iPIAG) method enjoys a global linear convergence under a quadratic growth condition, which is strictly weaker than strong convexity, provided that the stepsize is not larger than a constant. Moreover, we present two numerical expreiments which demonstrate that iPIAG outperforms the origina…
In this paper, we first propose a general inertial proximal point method for the mixed variational inequality (VI) problem. Based on our knowledge, without stronger assumptions, convergence rate result is not known in the literature for inertial type proximal point methods. Under certain conditions, we are able to establish the global convergence and a $o(1/k)$ convergence rate result (under certain measure) of the proposed general inertial proximal point method. We then show that the linearized alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) for separable convex optimization with linear co…
We prove an abstract form of the strong convergence of the Halpern-type and Tikhonov-type proximal point algorithms in CAT(0) spaces. In addition, we derive uniform and computable rates of metastability (in the sense of Tao) for these iterations using proof mining techniques.
This paper proposes a two-point inertial proximal point algorithm to find zero of maximal monotone operators in Hilbert spaces. We obtain weak convergence results and non-asymptotic $O(1/n)$ convergence rate of our proposed algorithm in non-ergodic sense. Applications of our results to various well-known convex optimization methods, such as the proximal method of multipliers and the alternating direction method of multipliers are given. Numerical results are given to demonstrate the accelerating behaviors of our method over other related methods in the literature.
We study inertial versions of primal-dual proximal splitting, also known as the Chambolle--Pock method. Our starting point is the preconditioned proximal point formulation of this method. By adding correctors corresponding to the anti-symmetric part of the relevant monotone operator, using a FISTA-style gap unrolling argument, we are able to derive gap estimates instead of merely ergodic gap estimates. Moreover, based on adding a diagonal component to this corrector, we are able to combine strong convexity based acceleration with inertial acceleration. We test our proposed method on image proc…
In this paper, we propose and study the asymptotic convergence and nonasymptotic global convergence rates (iteration-complexity) of an inertial under-relaxed version of the relative-error hybrid proximal extragradient (HPE) method for solving monotone inclusion problems. We analyze the proposed method under more flexible assumptions than existing ones on the extrapolation and relative-error parameters. As applications, we propose and/or study inertial under-relaxed forward-backward and Tseng's modified forward-backward type methods for solving structured monotone inclusions.
In this paper we study the problems of minimizing the sum of two nonconvex functions: one is differentiable and satisfies smooth adaptable property. The smooth adaptable property, also named relatively smooth condition, is weaker than the globally gradient Lipschitz continuity. We analyze an inertial version of the Bregman Proximal Gradient (BPG) algorithm and prove its stationary convergence. Besides, we prove a sublinear convergence of the inertial algorithm. Moreover, if the objective function satisfies Kurdyka--Łojasiewicz (KL) property, its global convergence to a critical point of the ob…
We consider the monotone inclusion problems in real Hilbert spaces. Proximal splitting algorithms are very popular technique to solve it and generally achieve weak convergence under mild assumptions. Researchers assume the strong conditions like strong convexity or strong monotonicity on the considered operators to prove strong convergence of the algorithms. Mann iteration method and normal S-iteration method are popular methods to solve fixed point problems. We propose a new common fixed point algorithm based on normal S-iteration method using Tikhonov regularization to find common fixed poin…
In this paper, we introduce an inertial proximal method for solving a bilevel problem involving two monotone equilibrium bifunctions in Hilbert spaces. Under suitable conditions and without any restrictive assumption on the trajectories, the weak and strong convergence of the sequence generated by the iterative method are established. Two particular cases illustrating the proposed method are thereafter discussed with respect to hierarchical minimization problems and equilibrium problems under saddle point constraint. Furthermore, a numerical example is given to demonstrate the implementability…
In this paper we study nonconvex and nonsmooth optimization problems with semi-algebraic data, where the variables vector is split into several blocks of variables. The problem consists of one smooth function of the entire variables vector and the sum of nonsmooth functions for each block separately. We analyze an inertial version of the Proximal Alternating Linearized Minimization (PALM) algorithm and prove its global convergence to a critical point of the objective function at hand. We illustrate our theoretical findings by presenting numerical experiments on blind image deconvolution, on sp…

We consider the exact continuous relaxation model of matrix rank minimization problem proposed by Yu and Zhang (Comput.Optim.Appl. 1-20, 2022). Motivated by the inertial techinique, we propose a general inertial smoothing proximal gradient algorithm(GIMSPG) for this kind of problems. It is shown that the singular values of any accumulation point have a common support set and the nonzero singular values have a unified lower bound. Besides, the zero singular values of the accumulation point can be achieved within finite iterations. Moreover, we prove that any accumulation point of the sequence g…
The proximal inertial gradient descent is efficient for the composite minimization and applicable for broad of machine learning problems. In this paper, we revisit the computational complexity of this algorithm and present other novel results, especially on the convergence rates of the objective function values. The non-ergodic O(1/k) rate is proved for proximal inertial gradient descent with constant stepzise when the objective function is coercive. When the objective function fails to promise coercivity, we prove the sublinear rate with diminishing inertial parameters. In the case that the o…
We study the behavior of the trajectories of a second-order differential equation with vanishing damping, governed by the Yosida regularization of a maximally monotone operator with time-varying index, along with a new {\em Regularized Inertial Proximal Algorithm} obtained by means of a convenient finite-difference discretization. These systems are the counterpart to accelerated forward-backward algorithms in the context of maximally monotone operators. A proper tuning of the parameters allows us to prove the weak convergence of the trajectories to zeroes of the operator. Moreover, it is possi…
We study a general convex optimization problem, which covers various classic problems in different areas and particularly includes many optimal transport related problems arising in recent years. To solve this problem, we revisit the classic Bregman proximal point algorithm (BPPA) and introduce a new inexact stopping condition for solving the subproblems, which can circumvent the underlying feasibility difficulty often appearing in existing inexact conditions when the problem has a complex feasible set. Our inexact condition also covers several existing inexact conditions as special cases and …
We propose BIBPA, a block inertial Bregman proximal algorithm for minimizing the sum of a block relatively smooth function (that is, relatively smooth concerning each block) and block separable nonsmooth nonconvex functions. We prove that the sequence generated by BIBPA subsequentially converges to critical points of the objective under standard assumptions, and globally converges when the objective function is additionally assumed to satisfy the Kurdyka-Łojasiewicz (KŁ) property. We also provide the convergence rate when the objective satisfies the Łojasiewicz inequality. We apply BIBPA to th…
In recent years, the Deep Learning Alternating Minimization (DLAM), which is actually the alternating minimization applied to the penalty form of the deep neutral networks training, has been developed as an alternative algorithm to overcome several drawbacks of Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD) algorithms. This work develops an improved DLAM by the well-known inertial technique, namely iPDLAM, which predicts a point by linearization of current and last iterates. To obtain further training speed, we apply a warm-up technique to the penalty parameter, that is, starting with a small initial one a…
In a Hilbert framework, for convex differentiable optimization, we consider accelerated gradient methods obtained by combining temporal scaling and averaging techniques with Tikhonov regularization. We start from the continuous steepest descent dynamic with an additional Tikhonov regularization term whose coefficient vanishes asymptotically. We provide an extensive Lyapunov analysis of this first-order evolution equation. Then we apply to this dynamic the method of time scaling and averaging recently introduced by Attouch, Bot and Nguyen. We thus obtain an inertial dynamic which involves visco…
In a Hilbert setting, for convex differentiable optimization, we consider accelerated gradient dynamics combining Tikhonov regularization with Hessian-driven damping. The Tikhonov regularization parameter is assumed to tend to zero as time tends to infinity, which preserves equilibria. The presence of the Tikhonov regularization term induces a strong convexity property which vanishes asymptotically. To take advantage of the exponential convergence rates attached to the heavy ball method in the strongly convex case, we consider the inertial dynamic where the viscous damping coefficient is taken…

We propose inertial versions of block coordinate descent methods for solving non-convex non-smooth composite optimization problems. Our methods possess three main advantages compared to current state-of-the-art accelerated first-order methods: (1) they allow using two different extrapolation points to evaluate the gradients and to add the inertial force (we will empirically show that it is more efficient than using a single extrapolation point), (2) they allow to randomly picking the block of variables to update, and (3) they do not require a restarting step. We prove the subsequential converg…
Matrix Factorization is a popular non-convex optimization problem, for which alternating minimization schemes are mostly used. They usually suffer from the major drawback that the solution is biased towards one of the optimization variables. A remedy is non-alternating schemes. However, due to a lack of Lipschitz continuity of the gradient in matrix factorization problems, convergence cannot be guaranteed. A recently developed approach relies on the concept of Bregman distances, which generalizes the standard Euclidean distance. We exploit this theory by proposing a novel Bregman distance for …
A local convergence result for abstract descent methods is proved. The sequence of iterates is attracted by a local (or global) minimum, stays in its neighborhood and converges within this neighborhood. This result allows algorithms to exploit local properties of the objective function. In particular, the abstract theory in this paper applies to the inertial forward--backward splitting method: iPiano---a generalization of the Heavy-ball method. Moreover, it reveals an equivalence between iPiano and inertial averaged/alternating proximal minimization and projection methods. Key for this equival…
We propose a novel dynamically weighted inertial forward-backward algorithm (DWIFOB) for solving structured monotone inclusion problems. The scheme exploits the globally convergent forward-backward algorithm with deviations in [26] as the basis and combines it with the extrapolation technique used in Anderson acceleration to improve local convergence. We also present a globally convergent primal-dual variant of DWIFOB and numerically compare its performance to the primal-dual method of Chambolle-Pock and a Tikhonov regularized version of Anderson acceleration applied to the same problem. In al…
