In the framework of the Born-Oppenheimer Effective Field Theory, the hyperfine structure of heavy quarkonium hybrids at leading order in the 1/m Q expansion is determined by two potentials. We estimate those potentials by interpolating between the known short distance behavior and the long distance behavior calculated in the QCD Effective String Theory. The long distance behavior depends, at leading order, on two parameters which can be obtained from the long distance behavior of the heavy quarkonium potentials (up to sign ambiguities). The short distance behavior depends, at leading order, on two extra paramentes, which are obtained from a lattice calculation of the lower lying charmonium hybrid multiplets. This allows us to predict the hyperfine splitting both of bottomonium hybrids and of higher multiplets of charmonium hybrids. We carry out a careful error analysis and compare with other approaches.
The relation between the hyperfine structure and leptonic decay rates of heavy quarkonia is considered with the account of relativistic and radiative corrections. The calculated decay rates agree well with the available experimental data, while the predicted eta_c(2S) mass is significantly smaller than the value measured recently by the Belle and BaBar Collaborations.
The leading nonperturbative effects to the fine and hyperfine splitting were calculated some time ago. Recently, they have been used in order to obtain realistic numerical results for the lower levels in bottomonium systems. We point out that a contribution of the same order $O(Λ_{QCD}^4/m^3 α_s^2)$ has been overlooked. We calculate it in this paper.
We study the role of the lattice artifacts associated with the Coulomb binding effects in the analysis of the heavy quarkonium within lattice NRQCD. We find that a "naive" perturbative matching generates spurious linear Coulomb artifacts, which result in a large systematic error in the lattice predictions for the heavy quarkonium spectrum. This effect is responsible, in particular, for the discrepancy between the recent determinations of the bottomonium hyperfine splitting in the radiatively improved lattice NRQCD [1, 2]. We show that the correct matching procedure which provides full control …
We extend the formalism based on perturbative QCD that was developed in our previous work, and compute the hyperfine splittings of the bottomonium spectrum as well as the fine and hyperfine splittings of the charmonium spectrum. All the corrections up to O(alpha_s^5 m) are included in the computations. We find agreement (with respect to theoretical uncertainties) with the experimental values whenever available and give predictions for not yet observed splittings.
Modifications of the mass spectrum the quarkonium induced by its virtual dissociation into a pair of heavy mesons is considered. Coupling between quark and mesonic channels results in noticeable corrections to spin-dependent mass splitting. In particular, the observable hierarchy of mass splittings in the $χ_c, χ_b$ and $χ'_b$ multiplets is reproduced.
We revise the analysis of the bottomonium hyperfine splitting within the lattice nonrelativistic QCD. The Wilson coefficients of the radiatively improved lattice action are evaluated by a semianalytic approach based on the asymptotic expansion about the continuum limit. The nonrelativistic renormalization group is used to estimate the high-order radiative corrections. Our result for the $1S$ hyperfine splitting is $M_{Υ(1S)}-M_{η_b(1S)}=52.9\pm 5.5~{\rm MeV}$. It reconciles the predictions of the continuum and lattice QCD and is in very good agreement with the most accurate experimental measur…
The influence of tensor forces on hyperfine splitting and decay widths of mesons are investigated within the limits of quasirelativistic potential quark model. As the starting the system of the Rarita-Schwinger equations is used. We use a potential motivated by QCD with a mixed Lorentz structure.
We compute the c \bar{b} spectrum from a first principle Salpeter equation obtained in a preceding paper. For comparison we report also the heavy-light quarkonium spectrum and the hyperfine separations previously presented only in a graphical form. Notice that all results are parameter free.
We present a calculation of the hyperfine splittings in bottomonium using lattice Nonrelativistic QCD. The calculation includes spin-dependent relativistic corrections through O(v^6), radiative corrections to the leading spin-magnetic coupling and, for the first time, non-perturbative 4-quark interactions which enter at alpha_s^2 v^3. We also include the effect of u,d,s and c quark vacuum polarisation. Our result for the 1S hyperfine splitting is M(Upsilon,1S) - M(eta_b,1S)= 60.0(6.4) MeV. We find the ratio of 2S to 1S hyperfine splittings (M(Upsilon,2S) - M(eta_b,2S))/ (M(Upsilon,1S) - M(eta_…
Here we would like to review recent progress on the resummation on logarithms of $α_s$ in heavy quarkonium. We will mainly focus on the phenomenological relevance of these achievements. Determinations of the $η_b(1S)$ mass, $B_c(1S)$ hyperfine splitting, inclusive electromagnetic decays and implications for $t$-$\bar t$ production near threshold.
In calculations of the hyperfine splitting in charmonium, the contributions of the disconnected diagrams are considered small and are typically ignored. We aim to estimate nonperturbatively the size of the resulting correction, which may eventually be needed in high precision calculations of the charmonium spectrum. We study this problem in the quenched and unquenched QCD cases. On dynamical ensembles the disconnected charmonium propagators contain light modes which complicate the extraction of the signal at large distances. In the fully quenched case, where there are no such light modes, the …
We calculate the Lamb, fine and hyperfine shifts in $b\bar b$ with $n=2$, $l=0,1$. Radiative corrections as well as leading nonperturbative corrections (known to be due to the gluon condensate) are taken into account. The calculation is parameter-free, as we take $Λ$, ${\langle α_s G^2 \rangle}$ from independent sources. Agreement with experiment is found at the expected level $\sim 30\%$. Particularly interesting is a prediction for the hyperfine splitting, $M_{\rm average}(2^3P)-M(2^1P_1) = 1.7 \pm 0.9\, {\rm MeV}$, opposite in sign to the $c\bar c$ one ($\approx -0.9\, {\rm MeV}$), and wher…
Numerical simulations of the quarkonium spin splittings are done in the framework of lattice nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics (NRQCD). At leading order in the velocity expansion the spin splittings are of $O(M_Q v^4)$, where $M_Q$ is the renormalized quark mass and $v^2$ is the mean squared quark velocity. A systematic analysis is done of all next-to-leading order corrections. This includes the addition of $O(M_Q v^6)$ relativistic interactions, and the removal of $O(a^2 M_Q v^4)$ discretization errors in the leading-order interactions. Simulations are done for both S- and P-wave mesons,…
A study of the finite-size effect is carried out for spectra of both ground-state and excited-state baryons in quenched lattice QCD using Wilson fermions. Our simulations are performed at beta=6.2 with three different spatial sizes, La~1.6, 2.2 and 3.2 fm. It is found that the physical lattice size larger than 3 fm is required for delta states in all spin-parity (J^{P}=1/2^{+/-}, 3/2^{+/-}) channels and also negative-parity nucleon state (J^{P}=1/2^{-}) even in the rather heavy quark mass region. We also find a peculiar behavior of the finite-size effect on the hyperfine mass splittings betwee…
The hyperfine mass splittings of baryons in large $N$ QCD are proved to be proportional to ${\bf J}^2$. Hyperfine mass splittings are first allowed at order $1/N$ in the $1/N$ expansion.
We compute O(alpha^3 ln alpha) relative corrections to the ground state hyperfine splitting of a QED two body bound state with different masses of constituents. The general result is then applied to muonium and positronium. In particular, a new value of the muon to electron mass ratio is derived from the muonium ground state hyperfine splitting.
In this work an improved potential model for quarkonium spectra (charmonium, bottomonium) is constructed. Beside the one-gluon exchange and a linear confinement potential, the model includes systematically effects from two-gluon exchange and the induced interaction (i.e. t-channel exchanges of quark-antiquark bound states). These turn out to be important in order to reproduce correctly the fine- and hyperfine structure of the charmonium and bottomonium states. It is demonstrated that such a satisfactory description of the quarkonium spectra can be obtained with parameters (quark masses, strong…
Corrections of orders alpha^5, alpha^6 are calculated in the hyperfine splitting of the 2S state in the muonic hydrogen. The nuclear structure effects are taken into account in the one- and two-loop Feynman amplitudes by means of the proton electromagnetic form factors. Total numerical value of the 2S state hyperfine splitting 22.8148 meV in the (μp) can be considered as reliable estimation for the corresponding experiment with the accuracy 10^{-5}. The value of the Sternheim's hyperfine splitting interval [8ΔE^{HFS}(2S)-ΔE^{HFS}(1S)] is obtained with the accuracy 10^{-6}.
A detailed presentation is given of the analytic calculation of the single-photon annihilation contributions to the positronium ground state hyperfine splitting to order $m_eα^6$ in the framework of non-relativistic effective theories. The current status of the theoretical description of the positronium ground state hyperfine splitting is reviewed.
recently proposed strictly phenomenological static quark-antiquark potential belonging to the generality $V(r)=-Ar^{-α}+κr^β+V_{0}$ is tested with heavy quarkonia in the context of the shifted large N-expansion method. This nonrelativistic potential model fits the spin-averaged mass spectra of the $c\bar{c},$ $b\bar{b}$ and $c% \bar{b}$ quarkonia within a few ${\rm MeV}$ and also the five experimentally known leptonic decay widths of the $c\bar{c}$ and $b% \bar{b}$ vector states. Further, we compute the hyperfine splittings of the bottomonium spectrum as well as the fine and hyperfine splittin…
The contribution of hadronic vacuum polarization (HVP) to the hyperfine splitting of the muonium ground state is evaluated with the account of modern experimental data on the cross section of $e^+e^- \to$ annihilation into hadrons.
We investigate the chiral extrapolation of the lattice data for the light-heavy meson hyperfine splittings D^*-D and B^*-B to the physical region for the light quark mass. The chiral loop corrections providing non-analytic behavior in m_πare consistent with chiral perturbation theory for heavy mesons. Since chiral loop corrections tend to decrease the already too low splittings obtained from linear extrapolation, we investigate two models to guide the form of the analytic background behavior: the constituent quark potential model, and the covariant model of QCD based on the ladder-rainbow trun…
The contribution of Δisobar to the correction on proton polarizability in the hyperfine splitting of hydrogen and muonic hydrogen is calculated with the account of the experimental data on N-Δtransition form factors.
The contribution of the proton polarizability to the ground state hyperfine splitting in muonic hydrogen is evaluated on the basis of modern experimental and theoretical results on the proton polarized structure functions. The value of this correction is equal to 4.6(8)\cdot 10^{-4} times the Fermi splitting E_F.
Corrections of orders alpha^5, alpha^6 are calculated in the hyperfine splitting of the muonic hydrogen ground state. The nuclear structure effects are taken into account in the one- and two-loop Feynman amplitudes by means of the proton electromagnetic form factors. The modification of the hyperfine splitting part of the Breit potential due to the electron vacuum polarization is considered. Total numerical value of the 1S state hyperfine splitting 182.638 meV in the (mu p) can play the role of proper estimation for the corresponding experiment with the accuracy 30 ppm.
We present the complete result for the ${\cal O}(α^7m_e)$ one-photon annihilation contribution to the hyperfine splitting of the ground state energy levels in positronium. Numerically it increases the prediction of quantum electrodynamics by $217\pm 1$ kHz.
Recent measurements of the $η_b(1S)$, the ground state of the $b\bar{b}$ system, show the splitting between it and the $\Up(1S)$ to be 69.5$\pm$3.2 MeV, considerably larger than lattice QCD and potential model predictions, including recent calculations published by us. The models are unable to incorporate such a large hyperfine splitting within the context of a consistent description of the energy spectrum and decays. We demonstrate that in our model, which incorporates a relativistic kinetic energy term, a linear confining term including its scalar-exchange relativistic corrections, and the c…
The contribution of hadronic vacuum polarization to the hyperfine splitting of the muonic hydrogen ground state is calculated with the account of experimental data on the cross section of e^+e^-\to annihilation into hadrons and the dipole parameterization of electromagnetic proton form factors.
The one-loop self-energy correction to the hyperfine splitting of the 1s and 2s levels in H-like low-Z atoms is evaluated to all orders in Zα. The results are compared to perturbative calculations. The residual higher-order contribution is evaluated. Implications to the specific difference of the hyperfine structure intervals 8Δν_2 - Δν_1 in He^+ are investigated.
The contribution of the proton polarizability to the hydrogen hyperfine splitting is evaluated on the basis of modern experimental and theoretical results on the proton polarized structure functions. The value of this correction is equal to 1.4 ppm.
We discuss hadronic effects in the muonium hyperfine structure and derive an expression for the hadronic contribution to the hfs interval in form of the one-dimensional integral of the cross section of e+e- annihilation into hadrons. Higher-order hadronic contributions are also considered.
The hyperfine mass splittings of baryons containing a heavy quark are derived at leading order in large $N$ QCD. Hyperfine splittings either preserve or violate heavy quark spin symmetry. Previous work proves that the splittings which preserve heavy quark spin symmetry are proportional to ${\bf J}^2$ at order $1/N$, where $J$ is the angular momentum of the light degrees of freedom of the baryon. This work proves that the splittings which violate heavy quark spin symmetry are proportional to ${\bf J} \cdot {\bf S_Q}$ at order $1/(N m_Q)$ in the $1/N$ and $1/m_Q$ expansions.
Three-loop corrections to hyperfine splitting in muonium generated by the gauge invariant sets of diagrams with muon and tauon loop light-by-light scattering blocks are calculated. These results complete calculations of all light-by-light scattering contributions to hyperfine splitting in muonium.
The hyperfine splitting in heavy quarkonia is considered in its relation to the leptonic decay rates with the account of relativistic and radiative corrections. The calculated decay rates agree well with the available experimental data, while the predicted η_c(2S) mass is significantly smaller than the value measured recently by the Belle Collaboration.
The $Σ_c^*-Σ_c$ and $Σ_b^*-Σ_b$ hyperfine mass splittings are computed in the Skyrme model. The hyperfine splittings are suppressed by both $1/N_c$ and by $1/m_Q$, where $N_c$ is the number of colors and $m_Q$ is the mass of the heavy quark. The $Σ_c$, $Σ_c^*$, $Σ_b$, $Σ_b^*$, and $Λ_b$ masses are predicted in terms of the known values of the $Λ_c$, $D$, $D^*$, $B$ and $B^*$ masses.
In this paper we revisited phenomenological potentials. We studied S-wave heavy quarkonium spectra by two potential models. The first one is power potential and the second one is logarithmic potential. We calculated spin averaged masses, hyperfine splittings, decay constants, leptonic decay widhts, two-photon and two-gluon decay widths and some allowed M1 transitions. We studied ground and 4 radially excited S-wave charmonium and bottomonium states via solving nonrelativistic Schrödinger equation. Although the potentials were studied in this paper is not directly QCD motivated potential, obtai…
This paper aims at proving the fundamental role of a relativistic formulation for quarkonia models. We present a completely covariant description of a two-quark system interacting by the Cornell potential with a Breit term describing the hyperfine splitting. Using an appropriate procedure to calculate the Breit correction, we find heavy meson masses in excellent agreement with experimental data. Moreover, also when applied to light quarks and even taking average values of the running coupling constant, we prove that covariance properties and hyperfine splitting are sufficient to explain the li…
By relating fine and hyperfine spittings for l=1 states in bottomium we can factor out the less tractable part of the perturbative and nonperturbative effects. Reliable predictions for one of the fine splittings and the hyperfine splitting can then be made calculating in terms of the remaining fine splitting, which is then taken from experiment; perturbative and nonperturbative corrections to these relations are under full control. The method (which produces reasonable results even for the $c{\bar c}$ system) predicts a value of 1.5 MeV for the $(s=1)-(s=0)$ splitting in $b{\bar b}$, opposite …
The gluon fragmentation function of $g \to h_c$ at leading order of strong coupling constant $α_s$ and typical velocity $v$ is calculated in the framework of NRQCD, of which the contributions from both color-singlet and -octet processes are taken into account and hence the result is infrared safe. It is found that the fragmentation probability of a high energy virtual gluon to split into $h_c$ is about $7.1\times 10^{-7}$. The analytic fragmentation function presented in this work can be employed to the study of $h_c$ production in large transverse momentum at hadron colliders, such as Large H…
The logarithmically enhanced alpha^7 ln(1/alpha) contribution to the hyperfine splitting of the positronium ground-state energy levels is calculated in the framework of dimensionally regularized nonrelativistic quantum electrodynamics. The correction is negative and amounts to about 1/3 of the leading logarithmic alpha^7 ln^2(1/alpha) one. The discrepancy between the experimental measurements and the theoretical prediction is reduced.
We make use of recent accurate results obtained for the pion and kaon vector form factors within a chiral unitary approach in order to calculate the decay widths of the $τ$ lepton to these mesons and also to evaluate the contribution of this two mesons to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, the running of the fine structure constant and the muonium hyperfine splitting.
The muon and tauon light-by-light scattering contributions to hyperfine splitting in muonium are calculated. These results conclude calculation of all hard three-loop contributions to hyperfine splitting containing graphs with closed fermion loops. We discuss the special role that the lepton anomalous magnetic moments play in these calculations. The full result for all three-loop radiative-recoil corrections to hyperfine splitting generated by the graphs with closed lepton loops is presented.
In the $m_Q\rightarrow\infty$ limit, the hyperfine splittings in the ground state doubly heavy baryons $\left(QQq\right)$ and single heavy antimesons $(\bar{Q}q)$ are related by heavy quark-diquark symmetry (HQDQ) as the light degrees of freedom in both the hadrons are expected to have identical configurations. In this article, working within the framework of nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD), we study the perturbative and nonperturbative corrections to the HQDQ symmetry hyperfine splitting relation that scale as ${\cal O}\left(α_s^2\right)$ and $Λ_{\rm QCD}^2/m_Q^2$ respectively. In the extreme hea…

We report on a recent investigation on heavy quarkonium hybrids that goes beyond the usual Born-Oppenheimer approximation by including not only the mixing between nearby hybrid states but also the mixing with quarkonium states. We use a systematic effective field theory framework based on NRQCD together with lattice QCD inputs. Short and long distance constraints from weak coupling pNRQCD and the QCD effective string theory are also employed. We calculate the quarkonium and hybrid spectrum for charmonium and bottomonium, and estimate a number of decay widths. Most of the isospin zero $XYZ$ res…
The contribution of pseudoscalar pole diagrams to the hadronic light-by-light corrections of order alpha^3 E_F to the ground state hyperfine splitting in hydrogenic atom is calculated in the pseudoscalar pole terms approximation. The vector dominance model for the form factor of the transition of a pseudoscalar meson into two photons is used. With the account of new experimental data on the cross sections sigma (e^+e^-\to ρ, ω\to π^0(η)γ) in the SND and CMD-2 experiments some other hadronic corrections to the muonium hyperfine splitting are calculated.
We present results for the corrections of order alpha^2 (Z alpha) E_F to the hyperfine splitting of muonium. We compute all the contributing Feynman diagrams in dimensional regularization and a general covariant gauge using a mixture of analytical and numerical methods. We improve the precision of previous results.
Hyperfine splittings between the heavy vector (D*, B*) and pseudoscalar (D, B) mesons have been calculated numerically in lattice QCD, where the pion mass (which is related to the light quark mass) is much larger than its physical value. Naive linear chiral extrapolations of the lattice data to the physical mass of the pion lead to hyperfine splittings which are smaller than experimental data. In order to extrapolate these lattice data to the physical mass of the pion more reasonably, we apply the effective chiral perturbation theory for heavy mesons, which is invariant under chiral symmetry w…
The recent discoveries of the bottomonia states h_b(1P) and h_b(2P) confirm the quark model prediction, already verified in the charmonia sector, that the hyperfine splitting of P-wave mesons is very small. The striking agreement is somewhat surprising because the non-relativistic result, for which the splitting is zero, may be modified due to large mass shifts from coupling to open flavour meson pairs. This paper is based on the observation that in most models hyperfine splitting remains small despite what are in many cases large mass shifts. This effect is shown to be a generic feature of mo…
We calculate radiative corrections to the Lamb shift of order $α^3(Zα)^5m$ and radiative corrections to hyperfine splitting of order $α^3(Zα)E_F$ generated by the diagrams with insertions of radiative photons and electron polarization loops in the graphs with two external photons. We also obtain the radiative-recoil correction to hyperfine splitting in muonium generated by the diagrams with the $τ$ polarization loop.
We obtain positronium Hyperfine Splitting owing to the non-commutativity of space and show that, in the leading order, it is proportional to $θα^6$ where, $θ$ is the parameter of non-commutativity. It is also shown that spatial non-commutativity splits the spacing between $n=2$ triplet excited levels $E(2^3S_1)\to E(2^3P_2)$ which provides an experimental test on the non-commutativity of space.
In this paper we discuss a quantity that can be derived from the hadronic spectrum - the ratio between the color hyperfine splitting of a K meson and that of a Sigma baryon. It will be shown that within the constituent quark model this ratio depends only on the ratio of contact probabilities within the hadrons. We compute this ratio assuming several phenomenological potential models, and show that the best agreement with data is obtained from the Cornell potential - Coulomb + linear. Thus the analysis of color hyperfine interactions corroborat es the preference for the Cornell potential based …
We calculate radiative-recoil corrections of order $α^2(Zα)(m/M)E_F$ to hyperfine splitting in muonium generated by the diagrams with electron and muon polarization loops. These corrections are enhanced by the large logarithm of the electron-muon mass ratio. The leading logarithm cubed and logarithm squared contributions were obtained a long time ago. The single-logarithmic and nonlogarithmic contributions calculated here improve the theory of hyperfine splitting, and affect the value of the electron-muon mass ratio extracted from the experimental data on the muonium hyperfine splitting.
We revisit the contribution of axial-vector mesons to the hyperfine splitting of muonic hydrogen. We focus our attention on the doubly-virtual asymptotic behavior of the relevant form factors of axial-vector mesons, together with their coupling to nucleons based on resonance saturation and short-distance constraints. Among others, we find significant differences with respect to previous studies, including an opposite sign and a $\sim50\%$ effect of the doubly-virtual high-energy behavior.
Predictions for the hyperfine splitting of 2S bottomonia are compared with the two recent experimental candidates for the η_b(2S). The smaller splitting of the Belle state is consistent with unquenched lattice QCD computations, many potential models, and a model-independent relation which works well for charmonia. The larger splitting for the state extracted from CLEO data is inconsistent with most predictions.
A detailed discussion of the long-range one-pion exchange (Yukawa potential) contribution to the 2S hyperfine splitting in muonic hydrogen which had, until recently, been disregarded is presented. We evaluate the relevant vertex amplitudes, in particular $π^0μ^+μ^-$, combining low energy chiral expansions together with experimental data on $π^0$ and $η$ decays into two leptons. A value of $Δ{E}^π_{HFS}= -(0.09 \pm 0.06)\ μ\rm{eV}$ is obtained for this contribution.
