How to disentangle the possible {\it genuine} quenching of $g_A$ caused by scale anomaly of QCD parameterized by the scale-symmetry-breaking quenching factor $q_{ssb}$ from nuclear correlation effects is described. This is done by matching the Fermi-liquid fixed point (FLFP) theory to the ``Extreme Single Particle (shell) Model" (acronym ESPM) in superallowed Gamow-Teller transitions in heavy doubly-magic shell nuclei. The recently experimentally observed indication for $(1-q_{ssb})\neq 0$ -- that one might identify as ``fundamental quenching ({\it FQ})" -- in certain experiments seems to be alarmingly significant. I present arguments how symmetries hidden in the matter-free vacuum can emerge and suppress such {\it FQ} in strong nuclear correlations. How to confirm or refute this observation is discussed in terms of the superallowed Gamow-Teller transition in the doubly-magic nucleus $^{100}$Sn and in the spectral shape in the multifold forbidden $β$ decay of $^{115}$In.
Preliminary PHENIX data on $Au+Au$ reactions at $\sqrt{s}= 130$ AGeV suggest that $\bar{p}$ yields may exceed $π^-$ at high $p_{\rm T} > 2$ GeV/c. We propose that jet quenching in central collisions suppresses the hard PQCD component of the spectra in central $A+A$ reactions, thereby exposing a novel non-perturbative component of baryon dynamics. We suggest that baryon junctions provide a possible explanation of the anomalous component. We predict that the $\bar{p} \geq π^-$ anomaly is limited to a finite $p_{\rm T}$ window and decreases with increasing impact parameter.
PHENIX data on Au+Au at root(s)_= 130 AGeV suggest that p-bar yields may exceed pi- at high p_T > 2 GeV/c. We propose that jet quenching in central collisions suppresses the hard PQCD component of the spectra in central A+A reactions, thereby exposing a novel component of baryon dynamics that we attribute to (gluonic) baryon junctions. We predict that the observed p-bar >= pi- and the p > pi+ anomaly at p_T ~ 2 GeV/c is limited to a finite p_T window that decreases with increasing impact parameter.
We show that chiral effective field theory (EFT) two-body currents provide important contributions to the quenching of low-momentum-transfer Gamow-Teller transitions, and use chiral EFT to predict the momentum-transfer dependence that is probed in neutrinoless double-beta decay. We then calculate for the first time the neutrinoless double-beta decay operator based on chiral EFT currents and study the nuclear matrix elements at successive orders. The contributions from chiral two-body currents are significant and should be included in all calculations.
Nuclear matrix elements (NMEs) for neutrinoless double beta decays (DBDs) are required for studying neutrino physics beyond the standard model by DBD. The experimental spin-dipole (SD) giant resonance energy and the SD strength are shown for the first time to be closely related to the DBD-NME, and are used for studying the spin-isospin correlation and the quenching of the axial-vector coupling. So they are used to help the theoretical model calculation of the DBD-NME.
In the presence of a gravitational contribution to the chiral anomaly, the chiral magnetic effect induces an energy current proportional to the square of the temperature in equilibrium. In holography the thermal state corresponds to a black hole. We numerically study holographic quenches in which a planar shell of scalar matter falls into a black hole and rises its temperature. During the process the momentum density (energy current) is conserved. The energy current has two components, a non-dissipative one induced by the anomaly and a dissipative flow component. The dissipative component can …
We present a precision analysis of the $^{136}$Xe two-neutrino $ββ$ electron spectrum above 0.8 MeV, based on high-statistics data obtained with the KamLAND-Zen experiment. An improved formalism for the two-neutrino $ββ$ rate allows us to measure the ratio of the leading and subleading $2νββ$ nuclear matrix elements (NMEs), $ξ^{2ν}_{31} = -0.26^{+0.31}_{-0.25}$. Theoretical predictions from the nuclear shell model and the majority of the quasiparticle random-phase approximation (QRPA) calculations are consistent with the experimental limit. However, part of the $ξ^{2ν}_{31}$ range allowed by t…
In this paper a microscopic state-of-the-art approach to calculation of the nuclear matrix element $M^{0ν}$ for neutrinoless double beta decay with an account for nuclear deformation is presented in length and applied for $^{76}$Ge, $^{150}$Nd and $^{160}$Gd. The proton-neutron quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA) with a realistic residual interaction [the Brueckner $G$ matrix derived from the charge-depending Bonn (Bonn-CD) nucleon-nucleon potential] is used as the underlying nuclear structure model. The effects of the short range correlations and the quenching of the axial vector …
I discuss how the axial current coupling constant $g_A$ renormalized in scale symmetric chiral EFT defined at a chiral matching scale impacts on the axial current matrix elements on beta decays in nuclei with and without neutrinos. The "quenched" $g_A$ observed in nuclear superallowed Gamow-Teller transitions, a long-standing puzzle in nuclear physics, is shown to encode the emergence of chiral-scale symmetry hidden in QCD in the vacuum. This enables one to explore how trace-anomaly-induced scale symmetry breaking enters in the renormalized $g_A$ in nuclei applicable to certain non-unique forb…
We use coupled-cluster theory and nuclear interactions from chiral effective field theory to compute the nuclear matrix element for the neutrinoless double-beta decay of $^{48}$Ca. Benchmarks with the no-core shell model in several light nuclei inform us about the accuracy of our approach. For $^{48}$Ca we find a relatively small matrix element. We also compute the nuclear matrix element for the two-neutrino double-beta decay of $^{48}$Ca with a quenching factor deduced from two-body currents in recent ab-initio calculation of the Ikeda sum-rule in $^{48}$Ca [Gysbers et al., Nature Physics 15,…
We present a generator-coordinate calculation, based on a relativistic energy-density functional, of the low-lying spectra in the isotopes $^{150}$Nd and $^{150}$Sm and of the nuclear matrix element that governs the neutrinoless double-beta decay of the first isotope to the second. We carefully examine the impact of octupole correlations on both nuclear structure and the double-beta decay matrix element. Octupole correlations turn out to reduce quadrupole collectivity in both nuclei. Shape fluctuations, however, dilute the effects of octupole deformation on the double-beta decay matrix element…
We examine the leading effects of two-body weak currents from chiral effective field theory on the matrix elements governing neutrinoless double-beta decay. In the closure approximation these effects are generated by the product of a one-body current with a two-body current, yielding both two- and three-body operators. When the three-body operators are considered without approximation, they quench matrix elements by about 10%, less than suggested by prior work, which neglected portions of the operators. The two-body operators, when treated in the standard way, can produce much larger quenching…
We show that the correlations of the quasiparticle random-phase approximation (QRPA) significantly reduce the nuclear matrix element (NME) of neutrinoless double-beta decay by a new mechanism in the calculation for $^{150}$Nd $\rightarrow$ $^{150}$Sm. This effect is due mainly to the normalization factors of the QRPA ground states included in the overlap of intermediate states, to which the QRPA states based on the initial and final ground states are applied. These normalization factors arise according to the definition of the QRPA ground state as the vacuum of quasibosons. Our NME is close to…
Neutrinoless double beta decay ($0νββ$) is one of the most sensitive approaches to test particle physics beyond the standard model. During the last years, besides the most restrictive limit on the effective Majorana neutrino mass, the analysis of new contributions by the Heidelberg group led to bounds on left-right-symmetric models, leptoquarks and R-parity violating models competitive to recent accelerator limits, which are of special interest in view of the HERA anomaly at large $Q^2$ and $x$. These new results deduced from the Heidelberg-Moscow double beta decay experiment are reviewed. Als…

Estimates of nuclear matrix elements for neutrinoless double beta decay (0nu2beta) based on the quasiparticle random phase approximations (QRPA) are affected by theoretical uncertainties, which can be substantially reduced by fixing the unknown strength parameter g_pp of the residual particle-particle interaction through one experimental constraint - most notably through the two-neutrino double beta decay (2nu2beta) lifetime. However, it has been noted that the g_pp adjustment via 2\nu2βdata may bring QRPA models in disagreement with independent data on electron capture (EC) and single beta de…
The superallowed Gamow-Teller transition in the doubly-magic-shell nucleus $^{100}$Sn and the high resolution spectral shape analysis in the fourth-forbidden nonunique transition in $^{115}$In indicate as much as $\sim 40\%$ {\it fundamental} quenching in the axial-current coupling constant $g_A$ in nuclei. This can be attributed to an effect of the trace anomaly in QCD "emerging" in nuclear medium. If confirmed, this would signal a major revamping to do in nuclear interactions consistent with chiral-scale symmetry in nuclear medium and a big impact on $0ν$ and $νν$ double $β$ decays for BSM. …
Detection of the neutrinoless $ββ$ ($0νββ$) decay is of high priority in the particle- and neutrino-physics communities. The detectability of this decay mode is strongly influenced by the value of the weak axial-vector coupling constant $g_{\rm A}$. The recent nuclear-model analyses of $β$ and $ββ$ decays suggest that the value of $g_{\rm A}$ could be dramatically quenched, reaching ratios of $g^{\rm free}_{\rm A}/g_{\rm A}\approx 4$, where $g^{\rm free}_{\rm A}=1.27$ is the free, neutron-decay, value of $g_{\rm A}$. The effects of this quenching appear devastating for the sensitivity of the p…
We study in this letter the double beta decay of 136Xe with emission of two neutrinos which has been recently measured by the EXO-200 collaboration. We use the same shell model framework, valence space, and effective interaction that we have already employed in our calculation of the nuclear matrix element (NME) of its neutrinoless double beta decay. Using the quenching factor of the Gamow-Teller operator which is needed to reproduce the very recent high resolution 136Xe (3He, t)136Cs data, we obtain a nuclear matrix element M(2nu)=0.025 MeV^(-1) compared with the experimental value M(2nu)=0.0…
The nuclear matrix elements $M^{0ν}$ of the neutrinoless double beta decay ($0νββ$) of most nuclei with known $2νββ$-decay rates are systematically evaluated using the Quasiparticle Random Phase Approximation (QRPA) and Renormalized QRPA (RQRPA). The experimental $2νββ$-decay rate is used to adjust the most relevant parameter, the strength of the particle-particle interaction. New results confirm that with such procedure the $M^{0ν}$ values become essentially independent on the size of the single-particle basis. Furthermore, the matrix elements are shown to be also rather stable with respect t…
We report on the calculation of Gamow-Teller and double-beta decay properties for nuclei around 132Sn within the framework of the realistic shell model. The effective shell-model Hamiltonian and Gamow-Teller transition operator are derived by way of many-body perturbation theory, without resorting to empirical effective quenching factor for the Gamow-Teller operator. The results are then compared with the available experimental data, in order to establish the reliability of our approach. This is a mandatory step, before we apply the same methodology, in forthcoming studies, to the calculation …
With such procedure the $M^{0ν}$ values become essentially independent on single-particle basis size, the axial vector quenching factor, etc. Theoretical arguments in favor of the adopted way of determining the interacti…
Study of the neutrinoless double beta decay, $0νββ$, includes a variety of problems of nuclear structure theory. They are reviewed here. The problems range from the mechanism of the decay, i.e. exchange of the light Majorana neutrino neutrino versus the exchange of some heavy, so far unobserved particle. Next, the proper expressions for the corresponding operator are described that should include the effects of the nucleon size and of the recoil order terms in the hadronic current. The issue of proper treatment of the short range correlations, in particular for the case of the heavy particle e…
We develop a fully self-consistent subtracted second random-phase approximation for charge-exchange processes with Skyrme energy-density functionals. As a first application, we study Gamow-Teller excitations in the doubly-magic nucleus $^{48}$Ca, the lightest double-$β$ emitter that could be used in an experiment, and in $^{78}$Ni, the single-beta-decay rate of which is known. The amount of Gamow-Teller strength below 20 or 30 MeV is considerably smaller than in other energy-density-functional calculations and agrees better with experiment in $^{48}$Ca, as does the beta-decay rate in $^{78}$Ni…
In nuclear structure calculations, the choice of a limited model space, due to computational needs, leads to the necessity to renormalize the Hamiltonian as well as any transition operator. Here, we present a study of the renormalization procedure and effects of the Gamow-Teller operator within the framework of the realistic shell model. Our effective shell-model operators are obtained, starting from a realistic nucleon-nucleon potential, by way of the many-body perturbation theory in order to take into account the degrees of freedom that are not explicitly included in the chosen model space. …
