In plasmas composed of massless electrically charged fermions, chirality can be interchanged with magnetic helicity while preserving the total chirality through the quantum chiral anomaly. The decay of turbulent energy in plasmas such as those in the early Universe and compact stars is usually controlled by certain conservation laws. In the case of zero total chirality, when the magnetic helicity density balances with the appropriately scaled chiral chemical potential to zero, the total chirality no longer determines the decay. We propose that in such a case, an adaptation to the Hosking integral, which is conserved in nonhelical magnetically dominated turbulence, controls the decay in turbulence with helicity balanced by chiral fermions. We show, using a high resolution numerical simulation, that this is indeed the case. The magnetic energy density decays and the correlation length increases with time just like in nonhelical turbulence with vanishing chiral chemical potential. But here, the magnetic helicity density is nearly maximum and shows a scaling with time $t$ proportional to $t^{-2/3}$. This is unrelated to the $t^{-2/3}$ decay of magnetic {\it energy} in fully helical magnetic turbulence. The modulus of the chiral chemical potential decays in the same fashion. This is much slower than the exponential decay previously expected in theories of asymmetric baryon production from the hypermagnetic helicity decay after axion inflation.
We perform direct numerical simulations of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence with kinetic energy and cross helicity injections at large scales. We observe that the cross helicity changes sign as we go from large and intermediate scales to small scales. In addition, the magnetic reconnections are strongest at the regions where the cross helicity changes sign and becomes smallest in magnitude. Thus, our simulations provide an important window to explore the regions of magnetic reconnections in nonlinear MHD.
Strong incompressible three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic turbulence is investigated by means of high resolution direct numerical simulations. The simulations show that the configuration space is characterized by regions of positive and negative cross-helicity, corresponding to highly aligned or anti-aligned velocity and magnetic field fluctuations, even when the average cross-helicity is zero. To elucidate the role of cross-helicity, the spectra and structure of turbulence are obtained in imbalanced regions where cross-helicity is non-zero. When averaged over regions of positive and negativ…
The purpose of this work is to investigate the spectral properties of the developed isotropic (non-Alfven) MHD turbulence stationary excited by an external force, which injects the cross helicity into the flow simultaneously with the energy. It is shown that the cross helicity blocks the spectral energy transfer in MHD turbulence and results in energy accumulation in the system. This accumulation proceeds until the vortex intensification compensates the decreasing efficiency of nonlinear interactions. The formula for estimating the average turbulence energy is obtained for the set ratio betwee…
Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) provides the simplest description of magnetic plasma turbulence in a variety of astrophysical and laboratory systems. MHD turbulence with nonzero cross helicity is often called imbalanced, as it implies that the energies of Alfvén fluctuations propagating parallel and anti-parallel the background field are not equal. Recent analytical and numerical studies have revealed that at every scale, MHD turbulence consists of regions of positive and negative cross helicity, indicating that such turbulence is inherently locally imbalanced. In this paper, results from high reso…
We show that oppositely directed fluxes of energy and magnetic helicity coexist in the inertial range in fully developed magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence with small-scale sources of magnetic helicity. Using a helical shell model of MHD turbulence, we study the high Reynolds number magnetohydrodynamic turbulence for helicity injection at a scale that is much smaller than the scale of energy injection. In a short range of scales larger than the forcing scale of magnetic helicity, a bottleneck-like effect appears, which results in a local reduction of the spectral slope. The slope changes in …
In this paper, we study the constraints imposed by the invariants (generalized helicities and energy) of extended magnetohydrodynamics on some global characteristics of turbulence. We show that the global turbulent kinetic and magnetic energies will approach equipartition only under certain circumstances that depend on the ratio of the generalized helicities. In systems with minimal thermal energy, we demonstrate that the three invariants collectively determine the characteristic length scale associated with Alfvénic turbulence.
We discuss a mean-field theory of generation of large-scale vorticity in a rotating density stratified developed turbulence with inhomogeneous kinetic helicity. We show that the large-scale nonuniform flow is produced due to ether a combined action of a density stratified rotating turbulence and uniform kinetic helicity or a combined effect of a rotating incompressible turbulence and inhomogeneous kinetic helicity. These effects result in the formation of a large-scale shear, and in turn its interaction with the small-scale turbulence causes an excitation of the large-scale instability (known …
The distributed chaos driven by Levich-Tsinober (helicity) integral: $I=\int \langle h({\bf x},t)~h({\bf x}+{\bf r}, t)\rangle d{\bf r}$ has been studied. It is shown that the helical distributed chaos can be considered as basis for complex turbulent flows with interplay between large-scale coherent structures and small-scale turbulence, such as Cuette-Taylor flow, wake behind cylinder and turbulent flow in the Large Plasma Device (LAPD) with inserted limiters. In the last case appearance of the helical distributed chaos, caused by the limiters, results in improvement of radial particle confin…
The role of magnetic helicity is investigated in kinetic Alfvén wave and oblique whistler turbulence in presence of a relatively intense external magnetic field $b_0 {\bf e_\parallel}$. In this situation, turbulence is strongly anisotropic and the fluid equations describing both regimes are the reduced electron magnetohydrodynamics (REMHD) whose derivation, originally made from the gyrokinetic theory, is also obtained here from compressible Hall MHD. We use the asymptotic equations derived by Galtier \& Bhattacharjee (2003) to study the REMHD dynamics in the weak turbulence regime. The analysi…
The inverse transfer of magnetic helicity is investigated through direct numerical simulations of large-scale-mechanically-driven turbulent flows in the isothermal ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) framework. The mechanical forcing is either purely solenoidal or purely compressive and the turbulent steady-states considered exhibit root mean square (RMS) Mach numbers 0.1 $\lesssim$ M $\lesssim$ 11. A continuous small-scale electromotive forcing injects magnetic helical fluctuations, which lead to the build-up of ever larger magnetic structures. Spectral scaling exponents are observed which, for …
It has been recognized that the turbulent cross helicity (correlation between the velocity and magnetic-field fluctuations) can play an important role in several magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) plasma phenomena such as the global magnetic-field generation, turbulence suppression, etc. Despite its relevance to the cross-helicity evolution, little attention has been paid to the dissipation rate of the turbulent cross helicity, $ε_W$. In this paper, we consider the model expression for the dissipation rate of the turbulent cross helicity. In addition to the algebraic model, an evolution equation of $ε_…
Kinetic helicity (hereafter helicity) is defined by the correlation between the velocity and the flow-aligned vorticity. Helicity, as well as energy, is an inviscid invariant of the hydrodynamic equations. In contrast to energy, a measure of the turbulent intensity, turbulent helicity, representing right- and left-handed twist associated with a fluctuating motion, provides a measure of the structural or topological property of the fluctuation. The helicity effect on the turbulent transport can be analytically obtained in the framework of the multiple-scale renormalized perturbation expansion t…
Ensemble averaged high resolution direct numerical simulations of reverse spectral transfer are presented, extending on the many single realization numerical studies done up to now. This identifies this type of spectral transfer as a statistical property of magnetohydrodynamic turbulence and thus permits reliable numerical exploration of its dynamics. The magnetic energy decay exponent from these ensemble runs has been determined to be $n_E = (0.47 \pm 0.03) + (13.9 \pm 0.8)/R_λ$ for initially helical magnetic fields. We show for the first time that even after removing the Lorentz force term i…
The nonlinear dynamics of magnetic helicity, $H^M$, which is responsible for large-scale magnetic structure formation in electrically conducting turbulent media is investigated in forced and decaying three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic turbulence. This is done with the help of high resolution direct numerical simulations and statistical closure theory. The numerically observed spectral scaling of $H^M$ is at variance with earlier work using a statistical closure model [Pouquet et al., J. Fluid Mech. \textbf{77} 321 (1976)]. By revisiting this theory a universal dynamical balance relation is …
It is shown that the turbulent dynamo $α$-effect converts magnetic helicity from the turbulent field to the mean field when the turbulence is electromagnetic while the magnetic helicity of the mean-field is transported across space when the turbulence is electrostatic or due to the electron diamagnetic effect. In all cases, however, the dynamo effect strictly conserves the total helicity except for resistive effects and a small battery effect. Implications for astrophysical situations, especially for the solar dynamo, are discussed.
The role of the different helical components of the magnetic and velocity fields in the inverse spectral transfer of magnetic helicity is investigated through Fourier shell-to-shell transfer analysis. Both magnetic helicity and energetic transfer analysis are performed on chosen data from direct numerical simulations of homogeneous isothermal compressible magnetohydrodynamic turbulence, subject to both a large-scale mechanical forcing and a small-scale helical electromotive driving. The root mean square Mach number of the hydrodynamic turbulent steady-state taken as initial condition varies fr…
In the presence of large-scale vortical motions and/or magnetic-field strains, the turbulent cross helicity (velocity--magnetic-field correlation in fluctuations) may contribute to the turbulent electromotive force and the Reynolds stress. These effects of cross helicity are considered to balance the primary effects of turbulence such as the turbulent magnetic diffusivity in magnetic-field evolution and the eddy viscosity in the momentum transport. The cross-helicity effects may suppress the enhanced transports due to turbulence. Physical interpretation of the effects is presented with special…
We study the transition in dimensionality of a three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic flow forced only mechanically, when the strength of a magnetic guiding field is gradually increased. We use numerical simulations to consider cases in which the mechanical forcing injects (or not) helicity in the flow. As the guiding field is increased, the strength of the magnetic field fluctuations decrease as a power law of the guiding field intensity. We show that for strong enough guiding fields, the helical magnetohydrodynamic flow can become almost two-dimensional. In this case, the mechanical energy ca…
We revisit the issue of conservation of magnetic helicity and the Woltjer-Taylor relaxation theory in magnetohydrodynamics in the context of weak solutions. We introduce a relaxed system for the ideal MHD system, which decouples the effects of hydrodynamic turbulence such as the appearance of a Reynolds stress term from the magnetic helicity conservation in a manner consistent with observations in plasma turbulence. As by-products we answer two open questions in the field: We show the sharpness of the $L^3$ integrability condition for magnetic helicity conservation and provide turbulent bounde…
Using mean-field theory, we compute the evolution of the magnetic field in a cylinder with outer perfectly conducting boundaries, an imposed axial magnetic and electric field. The thus injected magnetic helicity in the system can be redistributed by magnetic helicity fluxes down the gradient of the local current helicity of the small-scale magnetic field. A weak reversal of the axial magnetic field is found to be a consequence of the magnetic helicity flux in the system. Such fluxes are known to alleviate so-called catastrophic quenching of the α-effect in astrophysical applications. Applicati…
The cross helicity (velocity--magnetic-field correlation) effects in the magnetic-field induction and momentum transport in the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence are investigated with the aid of the multiple-scale renormalized perturbation expansion analysis. The outline of the theory is presented with reference to the role of the cross-interaction response functions between the velocity and magnetic field. In this formulation, the expressions of the turbulent fluxes: the turbulent electromotive force (EMF) in the mean induction equation and the Reynolds and turbulent Maxwell stresses in th…
Scaling laws for ion temperature gradient driven turbulence in magnetized toroidal plasmas are derived and compared with direct numerical simulations. Predicted dependences of turbulence fluctuation amplitudes, spatial scales, and resulting heat fluxes on temperature gradient and magnetic field line pitch are found to agree with numerical results in both the driving and inertial ranges. Evidence is provided to support the critical balance conjecture that parallel streaming and nonlinear perpendicular decorrelation times are comparable at all spatial scales, leading to a scaling relationship be…

The free decay of MHD turbulence at large Reynolds numbers is studied numerically using a shell model. We study the statistical properties based on representative sample of realisations (128 realisations for each type of initial conditions) over the period of $10^5$ large-scale turnover times. The performed simulations show that the force-free non-helical MHD turbulence can demonstrate two different scenarios of evolution in spite of similar initial conditions. Within the first scenario, the cross-helicity accumulation is so fast that the energy cascade vanishes before significant magnetic ene…
With the help of a model of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence tested previously, we explore high Reynolds number regimes up to equivalent resolutions of 6000^3 grid points in the absence of forcing and with no imposed uniform magnetic field. For the given initial condition chosen here, with equal kinetic and magnetic energy, the flow ends up being dominated by the magnetic field, and the dynamics leads to an isotropic Iroshnikov-Kraichnan energy spectrum. However, the locally anisotropic magnetic field fluctuations perpendicular to the local mean field follow a Kolmogorov law. We find that …
We investigate the impact of a solid-body rotation $Ω_0$ on the large-scale dynamics of an incompressible magnetohydrodynamic turbulent flow in presence of a background magnetic field $\bf B_0$ and at low Rossby number. Three-dimensional direct numerical simulations are performed in a periodic box, at unit magnetic Prandtl number and with a forcing at intermediate wavenumber $k_f=20$. When $Ω_0$ is aligned with $\bf B_0$ (i.e. $θ\equiv \widehat{\left(Ω_{0}, \bf B_0 \right)} = 0$), inverse transfer is found for the magnetic spectrum at $k<k_f$. This transfer is stronger when the forcing excites…

Beam Emission Spectroscopy (BES) measurements of ion-scale density fluctuations in the MAST tokamak are used to show that the turbulence correlation time, the drift time associated with ion temperature or density gradients, the particle (ion) streaming time along the magnetic field and the magnetic drift time are consistently comparable, suggesting a "critically balanced" turbulence determined by the local equilibrium. The resulting scalings of the poloidal and radial correlation lengths are derived and tested. The nonlinear time inferred from the density fluctuations is longer than the other …
In the presence of magnetic helicity, inverse transfer from small to large scales is well known in magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence and has applications in astrophysics, cosmology, and fusion plasmas. Using high resolution direct numerical simulations of magnetically dominated self-similarly decaying MHD turbulence, we report a similar inverse transfer even in the absence of magnetic helicity. We compute for the first time spectral energy transfer rates to show that this inverse transfer is about half as strong as with helicity, but in both cases the magnetic gain at large scales results f…
We investigate the drift wave -- zonal flow dynamics in a shearless slab geometry with the new flux-balanced Hasegawa-Wakatani model. As in previous Hasegawa-Wakatani models, we observe a sharp transition from a turbulence dominated regime to a zonal jet dominated regime as we decrease the plasma resistivity. However, unlike previous models, zonal structures are always present in the flux-balanced model, even for high resistivity, and strongly reduce the level of particle and vorticity flux. The more robust zonal jets also have a higher variability than in previous models, which is further enh…
Recent progress regarding the noncanonical Hamiltonian formulation of extended magnetohydrodynamics (XMHD), a model with Hall drift and electron inertia, is summarized. The advantages of the Hamiltonian approach are invoked to study some general properties of XMHD turbulence, and to compare them against their ideal MHD counterparts. For instance, the helicity flux transfer rates for XMHD are computed, and Liouville's theorem for this model is also verified. The latter is used, in conjunction with the absolute equilibrium states, to arrive at the spectra for the invariants, and to determine the…
We study the chaotic properties of a turbulent conducting fluid using direct numerical simulation in the Eulerian frame. The maximal Lyapunov exponent is measured for simulations with varying Reynolds number and magnetic Prandtl number. We extend the Ruelle theory of hydrodynamic turbulence to magnetohydrodynamic turbulence as a working hypothesis and find broad agreement with results. In other simulations we introduce magnetic helicity and these simulations show a diminution of chaos, which is expected to be eliminated at maximum helicity. We also find that the difference between two initiall…
Electron magnetohydrodynamics (EMHD) provides a fluid-like description of small-scale magnetized plasmas. An EMHD wave (also known as whistler wave) propagates along magnetic field lines. The direction of propagation can be either parallel or anti-parallel to the magnetic field lines. We numerically study propagation of 3-dimensional (3D) EMHD wave packets moving in one direction. We obtain two major results: 1. Unlike its magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) counterpart, an EMHD wave packet is dispersive. Because of this, EMHD wave packets traveling in one direction create opposite traveling wave packet…
In hydrodynamic and magnetohydrodynamic turbulence, expressions for the transfer rates rely on integrals over wavenumber triads $(\textbf{k,p,q})$ satisfying $\textbf{k+p+q=0}$. As an example $S_E^{uu}(\textbf{k|p,q})$ denotes the kinetic energy transfer rate to the mode $\textbf{k}$, from the two other modes in the triad, $\textbf{p}$ and $\textbf{q}$. As noted by Kraichnan (1958), in $S_E^{uu}(\textbf{k|p,q})$, what fraction of the energy transferred to the mode $\textbf{k}$ originated from $\textbf{p}$ and which from $\textbf{q}$ is unknown . Such an expression is thus incongruent with the …
We present a new theoretical picture of magnetically dominated, decaying turbulence in the absence of a mean magnetic field. We demonstrate that such turbulence is governed by the reconnection of magnetic structures, and not by ideal dynamics, as has previously been assumed. We obtain predictions for the magnetic-energy decay laws by proposing that turbulence decays on reconnection timescales, while respecting the conservation of certain integral invariants representing topological constraints satisfied by the reconnecting magnetic field. As is well known, the magnetic helicity is such an inva…
Plasma velocity and magnetic field measurements from the Voyager 2 mission are used to study solar wind turbulence in the slow solar wind at two different heliocentric distances, 5 and 29 astronomical units, sufficiently far apart to provide information on the radial evolution of this turbulence. The magnetic helicity and the cross-helicity, which express the correlation between the plasma velocity and the magnetic field, are used to characterize the turbulence. Wave number spectra are computed by means of the Taylor hypothesis applied to time resolved single point Voyager 2 measurements. The …
Reconnection is an important process that rules dissipation and diffusion of magnetic energy in plasmas. It is already clear that its rate is enhanced by turbulence, and that reconnection itself may increase its stochasticity, but the main mechanism that connects these two effects is still not completely understood. The aim of this work is to identify, from the terms of the electromotive force, the dominant physical process responsible for enhancing the reconnection rate in turbulent plasmas. We employ full three-dimensional numerical simulations of turbulence driven by stochastic reconnection…
The existence of partially conserved enstrophy-like quantities is conjectured to cause inverse energy transfers to develop embedded in magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) turbulence, in analogy to the influence of enstrophy in two-dimensional nonconducting turbulence. By decomposing the velocity and magnetic fields in spectral space onto helical modes, we identify subsets of three-wave (triad) interactions conserving two new enstrophy-like quantities which can be mapped to triad interactions recently identified with facilitating large-scale $α$-type dynamo action and the inverse transfer of magnetic h…
Plasma turbulence can be viewed as a magnetic landscape populated by large and small scale coherent structures. In this complex network, large helical magnetic tubes might be separated by small scale magnetic reconnection events (current sheets). However, the identification of these magnetic structures in a continuous stream of data has always been a challenging task. Here we present a method that is able to characterize both the large and small scale structures of the turbulent solar wind, based on the combined use of a filtered magnetic helicity ($H_m$) and the Partial Variance of Increments…
The evolution of the correlation characteristics in three-dimensional isotropic electron magnetohydrodynamic turbulence is investigated. Universal exact relations between the longitudinal and transverse two-point triple correlations of the components of the fluctuational magnetic fields and the rates of dissipation of the magnetic helicity and energy are obtained in the inertial range.
In this Paper, we present the first results from the Flux Angle operation mode of the Faraday Cup instrument onboard Parker Solar Probe. The Flux Angle mode allows rapid measurements of phase space density fluctuations close to the peak of the proton velocity distribution function with a cadence of 293 Hz. This approach provides an invaluable tool for understanding kinetic scale turbulence in the solar wind and solar corona. We describe a technique to convert the phase space density fluctuations into vector velocity components and compute several turbulence parameters such as spectral index, r…
Magnetic field generation on scales large compared with the scale of the turbulent eddies is known to be possible via the so-called $α$ effect when the turbulence is helical and if the domain is large enough for the $α$ effect to dominate over turbulent diffusion. Using three-dimensional turbulence simulations, we show that the energy of the resulting mean magnetic field of the saturated state increases linearly with the product of normalized helicity and the ratio of domain scale to eddy scale, provided this product exceeds a critical value of around unity. This implies that large-scale dynam…
Helicity, a measure of the breakage of reflectional symmetry representing the topology of turbulent flows, contributes in a crucial way to their dynamics and to their fundamental statistical properties. We review several of their main features, both new and old, as the discovery of bi-directional cascades or the role of helical vortices in the enhancement of large-scale magnetic fields in the dynamo problem. The dynamical contribution in magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) of the cross-correlation between velocity and induction is discussed as well. We consider next how turbulent transport is affected b…
The effects of the heliospheric current sheet (HCS) on the evolution of Alfvénic turbulence in the solar wind are studied using MHD simulations incorporating the expanding-box-model (EBM). The simulations show that near the HCS, the Alfvénicity of the turbulence decreases as manifested by lower normalized cross helicity and larger excess of magnetic energy. The numerical results are supported by a superposed-epoch analysis using OMNI data, which shows that the normalized cross helicity decreases inside the plasma sheet surrounding HCS, and the excess of magnetic energy is significantly enhance…
We propose a new reduced fluid model for the study of the drift wave -- zonal flow dynamics in magnetically confined plasmas. Our model can be viewed as an extension of the classic Hasegawa-Wakatani (HW) model, and is based on an improved treatment of the electron dynamics parallel to the field lines, to guarantee a balanced electron flux on the magnetic surfaces. Our flux-balanced HW (bHW) model contains the same drift-wave instability as previous HW models, but unlike these models, it converges exactly to the modified Hasegawa-Mima model in the collisionless limit. We rely on direct numerica…
