Forecasting water content dynamics in heterogeneous porous media has significant interest in hydrological applications; in particular, the treatment of infiltration when in presence of cracks and fractures can be accomplished resorting to peridynamic theory, which allows a proper modeling of non localities in space. In this framework, we make use of Chebyshev transform on the diffusive component of the equation and then we integrate forward in time using an explicit method. We prove that the proposed spectral numerical scheme provides a solution converging to the unique solution in some appropriate Sobolev space. We finally exemplify on several different soils, also considering a sink term representing the root water uptake.
We introduce a technique to automatically convert local boundary conditions into nonlocal volume constraints for nonlocal Poisson's and peridynamic models. The proposed strategy is based on the approximation of nonlocal Dirichlet or Neumann data with a local solution obtained by using available boundary, local data. The corresponding nonlocal solution converges quadratically to the local solution as the nonlocal horizon vanishes, making the proposed technique asymptotically compatible. The proposed conversion method does not have any geometry or dimensionality constraints and its computational…
In this work, we study the reproducing kernel (RK) collocation method for the peridynamic Navier equation. We first apply a linear RK approximation on both displacements and dilatation, then back-substitute dilatation, and solve the peridynamic Navier equation in a pure displacement form. The RK collocation scheme converges to the nonlocal limit and also to the local limit as nonlocal interactions vanish. The stability is shown by comparing the collocation scheme with the standard Galerkin scheme using Fourier analysis. We then apply the RK collocation to the quasi-discrete peridynamic Navier …
Peridynamic (PD) theories have gained widespread diffusion among various research areas, due to the ability of modeling discontinuities formation and evolution in materials. Bond-Based Peridynamics (BB-PD), notwithstanding some modeling limitations, is widely employed in numerical simulations, due to its easy implementation combined with physical intuitiveness and stability. In the present paper, several aspects of bond-based peridynamic models have been reviewed and investigated. A detailed description of peridynamics theory, applications and numerical models has been presented. Employed BB-P…
We present OBMeshfree, an Optimization-Based Meshfree solver for compactly supported nonlocal integro-differential equations (IDEs) that can describe material heterogeneity and brittle fractures. OBMeshfree is developed based on a quadrature rule calculated via an equality constrained least square problem to reproduce exact integrals for polynomials. As such, a meshfree discretization method is obtained, whose solution possesses the asymptotically compatible convergence to the corresponding local solution. Moreover, when fracture occurs, this meshfree formulation automatically provides a sharp…
We develop and analyze an optimization-based method for the coupling of a static peri-dynamic (PD) model and a static classical elasticity model. The approach formulates the coupling as a control problem in which the states are the solutions of the PD and classical equations, the objective is to minimize their mismatch on an overlap of the PD and classical domains, and the controls are virtual volume constraints and boundary conditions applied at the local-nonlocal interface. Our numerical tests performed on three-dimensional geometries illustrate the consistency and accuracy of our method, it…
Peridynamics is a nonlocal generalization of continuum mechanics theory which adresses discontinuous problems without using partial derivatives and replacing its by an integral operator. As a consequence, it finds applications in the framework of the development and evolution of fractures and damages in elastic materials. In this paper we consider a one-dimensional nonlinear model of peridynamics and propose a suitable two-dimensional fast-convolution spectral method based on Chebyshev polynomials to solve the model. This choice allows us to gain the same accuracy both in space and time. We sh…
Peridynamics is a nonlocal theory for dynamic fracture analysis consisting in a second order in time partial integro-differential equation. In this paper, we consider a nonlinear model of peridynamics in a two-dimensional spatial domain. We implement a spectral method for the space discretization based on the Fourier expansion of the solution while we consider the Newmark-$β$ method for the time marching. This computational approach takes advantages from the convolutional form of the peridynamic operator and from the use of the discrete Fourier transform. We show a convergence result for the f…
As a nonlocal extension of continuum mechanics, peridynamics has been widely and effectively applied in different fields where discontinuities in the field variables arise from an initially continuous body. An important component of the constitutive model in peridynamics is the influence function which weights the contribution of all the interactions over a nonlocal region surrounding a point of interest. Recent work has shown that in solid mechanics the influence function has a strong relationship with the heterogeneity of a material's micro-structure. However, determining an accurate influen…
The nonlocal models of peridynamics have successfully predicted fractures and deformations for a variety of materials. In contrast to local mechanics, peridynamic boundary conditions must be defined on a finite volume region outside the body. Therefore, theoretical and numerical challenges arise in order to properly formulate Dirichlet-type nonlocal boundary conditions, while connecting them to the local counterparts. While a careless imposition of local boundary conditions leads to a smaller effective material stiffness close to the boundary and an artificial softening of the material, severa…

This study presents a novel unsupervised convolutional Neural Network (NN) architecture with nonlocal interactions for solving Partial Differential Equations (PDEs). The nonlocal Peridynamic Differential Operator (PDDO) is employed as a convolutional filter for evaluating derivatives the field variable. The NN captures the time-dynamics in smaller latent space through encoder-decoder layers with a Convolutional Long-short Term Memory (ConvLSTM) layer between them. The ConvLSTM architecture is modified by employing a novel activation function to improve the predictive capability of the learning…
The derivation of nonlocal strong forms for many physical problems remains cumbersome in traditional methods. In this paper, we apply the variational principle/weighted residual method based on nonlocal operator method for the derivation of nonlocal forms for elasticity, thin plate, gradient elasticity, electro-magneto-elasticity and phase field fracture method. The nonlocal governing equations are expressed as integral form on support and dual-support. The first example shows that the nonlocal elasticity has the same form as dual-horizon non-ordinary state-based peridynamics. The derivation i…
Developments of nonlocal operators for modeling processes that traditionally have been described by local differential operators have been increasingly active during the last few years. One example is peridynamics for brittle materials and another is nonstandard diffusion including the use of fractional derivatives. A major obstacle for application of these methods is the high computational cost from the numerical implementation of the nonlocal operators. It is natural to consider fast methods of fast multipole or hierarchical matrix type to overcome this challenge. Unfortunately the relevant …
Motivated by problems where jumps across lower dimensional subsets and sharp transitions across interfaces are of interest, this paper studies the properties of fractional bounded variation ($BV$)-type spaces. Two different natural fractional analogs of classical $BV$ are considered: $BV^α$, a space induced from the Riesz-fractional gradient that has been recently studied by Comi-Stefani; and $bv^α$, induced by the Gagliardo-type fractional gradient often used in Dirichlet forms and Peridynamics - this one is naturally related to the Caffarelli-Roquejoffre-Savin fractional perimeter. Our main …
We present a network formulation for a traffic flow model with nonlocal velocity in the flux function. The modeling framework includes suitable coupling conditions at intersections to either ensure maximum flux or distribution parameters. Based on an upwind type numerical scheme, we prove the maximum principle and the existence of weak solutions on networks. We also investigate the limiting behavior of the proposed models when the nonlocal influence tends to infinity. Numerical examples show the difference between the proposed coupling conditions and a comparison to the Lighthill-Whitham-Richa…
The Richards equation is commonly used to model the flow of water and air through soil, and it serves as a gateway equation for multiphase flows through porous media. It is a nonlinear advection-reaction-diffusion equation that exhibits both parabolic-hyperbolic and parabolic-elliptic kinds of degeneracies. In this study, we provide reliable, fully computable, and locally space-time efficient a posteriori error bounds for numerical approximations of the fully degenerate Richards equation. For showing global reliability, a nonlocal-in-time error estimate is derived individually for the time-int…
This paper considers numerical discretization of a nonlocal conservation law modeling vehicular traffic flows involving nonlocal inter-vehicle interactions. The nonlocal model involves an integral over the range measured by a horizon parameter and it recovers the local Lighthill-Richards-Whitham model as the nonlocal horizon parameter goes to zero. Good numerical schemes for simulating these parameterized nonlocal traffic flow models should be robust with respect to the change of the model parameters but this has not been systematically investigated in the literature. We fill this gap through …
A class of evolution equations with nonlocal diffusion is considered in this work. These are integro-differential equations arising as models of propagation phenomena in continuum media with nonlocal interactions including neural tissue, porous media flow, peridynamics, models with fractional diffusion, as well as continuum limits of interacting dynamical systems. The principal challenge of numerical integration of nonlocal systems stems from the lack of spatial regularity of the data and solutions intrinsic to nonlocal models. To overcome this problem we propose a semidiscrete numerical schem…
We implement a computational periporomechanics model for simulating localized failure in unsaturated porous media. The coupled periporomechanics model is based on the peridynamic state concept and the effective force state concept. The coupled governing equations are integral-differential equations without assuming the continuity of solid displacement and fluid pressures. The fluid flow and effective force states are determined by nonlocal fluid pressure and deformation gradients through the recently formulated multiphase constitutive correspondence principle. The coupled peri-poromechanics is…
In this article we formulate and implement a computational multiphase periporomechanics model for unguided fracturing in unsaturated porous media. The same governing equation for the solid phase applies on and off cracks. Crack formation in this framework is autonomous, requiring no prior estimates of crack topology. As a new contribution, an energy-based criterion for arbitrary crack formation is formulated using the peridynamic effective force state for unsaturated porous media. Unsaturated fluid flow in the fracture space is modeled in a simplified way in line with the nonlocal formulation …
