Knowledge of stellar atmospheric parameters ($T_{\rm eff}$, $\log{g}$, [Fe/H]) of M dwarfs can be used to constrain both theoretical stellar models and Galactic chemical evolutionary models, and guide exoplanet searches, but their determination is difficult due to the complexity of the spectra of their cool atmospheres. In our ongoing effort to characterize M dwarfs, and in particular their chemical composition, we carried out multiband photometric calibrations of metallicity for early- and intermediate-type M dwarfs. The third Gaia data release provides high-precision astrometry and three-band photometry. This information, combined with the 2MASS and CatWISE2020 infrared photometric surveys and a sample of 4919 M dwarfs with metallicity values determined with high-resolution spectroscopy by The Cannon and APOGEE spectra, allowed us to study the effect of the metallicity in color-color and color-magnitude diagrams. We divided this sample into two subsamples: we used 1000 stars to train the calibrations with Bayesian statistics and Markov Chain Monte Carlo techniques, and the remaining 3919 stars to check the accuracy of the estimations. We derived several photometric calibrations of metallicity applicable to M dwarfs in the range of $-0.45\leq\text{[Fe/H]}\leq +0.45$ dex and spectral types down to M5.0 V that yield uncertainties down to the $0.10$ dex level. Lastly, we compared our results with other photometric estimations published in the literature for an additional sample of 46 M dwarfs in wide binary systems with FGK-type primary stars, and found a great predictive performance.
We present metallicity and photometric parallax calibrations for the F and G type dwarfs with photometric, astrometric and spectroscopic data. The sample consists of 168 dwarf stars covering the colour, iron abundance and absolute magnitude intervals $0.30<(B-V)_0<0.68$ mag, $-2.0<[Fe/H]<0.4$ dex and $3.4<M_V<6.0$ mag, respectively. The means and standard deviations of the metallicity and absolute magnitude residuals are small, i.e. $\langleΔ[Fe/H]_{res}\rangle=0$ and $σ=0.134$ dex, and $\langleΔ(M_V)_{res}\rangle=0$ and $σ=0.174$ mag, respectively, which indicate accurate metallicity and phot…
Open clusters are a useful tool when investigating several topics connected with stellar evolution; for example the age or distance can be more accurately determined than for field stars. However, one important parameter, the metallicity, is only known for a marginal percentage of open clusters. We aim at a consistent set of parameters for the open clusters investigated in our photometric Delta-a survey of chemically peculiar stars. Special attention is paid to expanding our knowledge of cluster metallicities and verifying their scale. Making use of a previously developed method based on norma…
We used the data of 701 stars covering the colour index interval 0.32<B-V<=1.16, with metallicities -1.76<=[Fe/H]<=+0.40 dex, which were taken from PASTEL catalogue and estimated metallicity dependent guillotine factors which provide a more accurate metallicity calibration. We reduced the metallicities of 11 authors to the metallicities of Valenti & Fischer (2005), thus obtained a homogeneous set of data which increased the accuracy of the calibration, i.e. [Fe/H]=-14.316*delta^{2}_{0.6}-3.557*delta_{0.6}+0.105. Comparison of the metallicity residuals, for two sets of data, based on the metall…

The MEarth Project is a photometric survey systematically searching the smallest stars nearest to the Sun for transiting rocky planets. Since 2008, MEarth has taken approximately two million images of 1844 stars suspected to be mid-to-late M dwarfs. We have augmented this survey by taking nightly exposures of photometric standard stars and have utilized this data to photometrically calibrate the $MEarth$ system, identify photometric nights, and obtain an optical magnitude with $1.5\%$ precision for each M dwarf system. Each optical magnitude is an average over many years of data, and therefore…
Uniform and accurate photometric calibration plays an important role in the current and next-generation wide-field imaging surveys. Herein, we review the modern photometric calibration methods, including the classic standard star method, "hardware/observation-driven" methods (such as the Ubercalibration, Hypercalibration, and Forward Global Calibration Methods), and "software/physics-driven" methods (e.g., the Stellar Locus Regression, Stellar Locus, and Stellar Color Regression Methods). Further, we discuss their advantages, limitations, and future developments toward millimagnitude precision…
We present an empirical near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopic method for estimating M dwarf metallicities, based on features in the H-band, as well as an implementation of a similar published method in the K-band. We obtained R~2000 NIR spectra of a sample of M dwarfs using the NASA IRTF-SpeX spectrograph, including 22 M dwarf metallicity calibration targets that have FGK companions with known metallicities. The H-band and K-band calibrations provide equivalent fits to the metallicities of these binaries, with an accuracy of +/- 0.12 dex. We derive the first empirically calibrated spectroscopic me…
Stellar parameters are not easily derived from M dwarf spectra, which are dominated by complex bands of diatomic and triatomic molecules and not well described at the line by line level by atmospheric models. M dwarf metallicities are therefore most commonly derived through less direct techniques. Several recent publications propose calibrations that provide the metallicity of an M dwarf from its Ks band absolute magnitude and its V-Ks color, but disagree at the \pm0.1 dex level. We compare these calibrations on a sample of 23 M dwarfs, which we select as wide (> 5 arcsec) companions of F-, G-…
We use the most homogeneous $Geneva$ seven-colour photometric system to derive new metallicity calibrations for early A- to K-type stars that cover both, dwarf stars and giants. The calibrations are based on several spectroscopic data sets that were merged to a common scale, and we applied them to open cluster data to obtain an additional proof of the metallicity scale and accuracy. In total, metallicities of 54 open clusters are presented. The accuracy of the calibrations for single stars is in general below 0.1 dex, but for the open cluster sample with mean values based on several stars we f…
We present wide field JHKs photometry of 16 Galactic globular clusters located towards the Galactic bulge, calibrated on the 2MASS photometric system. Differential reddening corrections and statistical field star decontamination are employed for all of these clusters before fitting fiducial sequences to the cluster red giant branches (RGBs). Observed values and uncertainties are reported for several photometric features, including the magnitude of the RGB bump, tip, the horizontal branch (HB) and the slope of the upper RGB. The latest spectroscopically determined chemical abundances are used t…
We present a sample of 135,873 RR Lyrae stars (RRLs) with precise photometric-metallicity and distance estimates from our newly calibrated $P-ϕ_{31}-R_{21}-$[Fe/H]/$P-R_{21}-$[Fe/H] and $G$ band absolute magnitude-metallicity relations. The $P-ϕ_{31}-R_{21}-$[Fe/H] and $P-R_{21}-$[Fe/H] relations for type RRab and type RRc stars are obtained from nearly 2700 Gaia-identified RRLs with precise $ϕ_{31}$ and $R_{21}$ measurements from the light curves and metallicity estimates from spectroscopy. Using 236 nearby RRLs with accurate distances estimated from parallax measurements with Gaia EDR3, new …
The location of M dwarfs in the V-K_s--M_Ks color-magnitude diagram (CMD) has been shown to correlate with metallicity. We demonstrate that previous empirical photometric calibrations of M dwarf metallicity exploiting this correlation systematically underestimate or overestimate metallicity at the extremes of their range. We improve upon previous calibrations in three ways. We use both a volume-limited and kinematically-matched sample of F and G dwarfs from the Geneva-Copehnagen Survey (GCS) to infer the mean metallicity of M dwarfs in the Solar Neighborhood, we use theoretical models of M dwa…
Understanding how the magnetic activity of low-mass stars depends on their fundamental parameters is an important goal of stellar astrophysics. Previous studies show that activity levels are largely determined by the stellar Rossby number which is defined as the rotation period divided by the convective turnover time. However, we currently have little information on the role that chemical composition plays. In this work, we investigate how metallicity affects magnetic activity using photometric variability as an activity proxy. Similarly to other proxies, we demonstrate that the amplitude of p…
The age calibration of the Washington deltaT1 index is mainly used to estimate ages of star clusters older than 1 Gyr, no age-metallicity degeneracy effect is considered. We have profusely exploited synthetic T1 versus C-T1 colour magnitude diagrams aiming at exploring the intrinsic behaviour of the deltaT1 index. The analysis shows that deltaT1 varies with age and metal content as well. In general, the dependence on age weakens for ages greater than ~ 6 Gyr, and results even less sensitive to age as the metallicity decreases. For ages younger than ~ 5 Gyr deltaT1 shows a strong correlation wi…
The aim of this work is to evaluate the performance of photometric metallicity [Fe/H], determined based on V-band light-curves photometrically transformed from the gr-band light-curves. We tested this by using a set of homogeneous sample of fundamental mode RR Lyrae located in the Kepler field. It was found that the color-term is necessary in such photometric transformation. We demonstrated that including the color-term the determined photometric [Fe/H] are in good agreement to the spectroscopic [Fe/H], either based on the calibrated or the transformed V-band light-curves. We also tested the i…
Based on high resolution and high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) spectra analysis of 90 solar type stars, we have established several new metallicity calibrations in Teff range [5600, 6500] K based on red spectra with the wavelength range of 560-880 nm. The new metallicity calibrations are applied to determine the metallicity of solar analogs selected from SDSS spectra. There is a good consistent result with the adopted value presented in SDSS-DR7 and a small scatter of 0.26 dex for stars with S/N > 50 is obtained. This study provides a new reliable way to derive the metallicity for solar-like st…
We report photometric estimates of effective temperature, $T_{\rm eff}$, metallicity, [Fe/H], carbonicity, [C/Fe], and absolute carbon abundances, $A{\rm (C)}$, for over 700,000 stars from the Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS) Data Release 2, covering a substantial fraction of the equatorial Sloan Digital Sky Survey Stripe 82. We present an analysis for two stellar populations: 1) halo main-sequence turnoff stars and 2) K-dwarf stars of mass $0.58 < M/M_{\odot} <0.75$ in the Solar Neighborhood. Application of the Stellar Photometric Index Network Explorer (SPHINX) to the mixe…
Gaia Data Release 1 allows to recalibrate standard candles such as the Red Clump stars. To use those, they first need to be accurately characterised. In particular, colours are needed to derive the interstellar extinction. As no filter is available for the first Gaia data release and to avoid the atmosphere model mismatch, an empirical calibration is unavoidable. The purpose of this work is to provide the first complete and robust photometric empirical calibration of the Gaia Red Clump stars of the solar neighbourhood, through colour-colour, effective temperature-colour and absolute magnitude-…
In an era of extensive photometric observations, the catalogs of RR Lyr type variable stars number tens of thousands of objects. The relation between the iron abundance [Fe/H] and the Fourier parameters of the stars light curve allows us to investigate mean metallicities and metallicity gradients in various stellar environments, independently of time-consuming spectroscopic observations. In this paper we use almost 6500 $V$- and $I$-band light curves of fundamental mode RR Lyr stars from the OGLE-IV survey to provide a relation between the $V$- and $I$-band phase parameter $φ_{31}$ used to est…
We have begun developing a new metallicity calibration for RR Lyrae stars that includes high-temperature phase regions. Our calibration is an updated and expanded version of the Delta-S, equivalent width method, but which is applicable for most phases of the pulsation, and for the hotter, shorter-period RRc stars. This calibration will be constructed from spectral observations of well studied, bright RR Lyrae stars with metallicities from published high-resolution studies, within the range $-2.5 < [Fe/H] < -0.3$. Phase information for our calibration stars were taken from the AAVSO website, an…
Based on a carefully constructed sample of dwarf stars, a new optical-near infrared photometric calibration to estimate the metallicity of late-type K and early-to-mid-type M dwarfs is presented. The calibration sample has two parts; the first part includes 18 M dwarfs with metallicities determined by high-resolution spectroscopy and the second part contains 49 dwarfs with metallicities obtained through moderate-resolution spectra. By applying this calibration to a large sample of around 1.3 million M dwarfs from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the Two-Micron All Sky Survey, the metallicity d…
We present a new calibration of the seven-color Vilnius system in terms of [Fe/H], applicable to F-M stars in the metallicity range -2.8<[Fe/H]<+0.5. We employ a purely empirical approach, based on ~1000 calibrating stars with high-resolution spectroscopic abundance determinations. It is shown that the color index P-Y is the best choice for a most accurate and sensitive abundance indicator for both dwarf and giant stars. Using it, [Fe/H] values can be determined with an accuracy of $\pm$0.12 dex for stars of solar and mildly sub-solar metallicity and $\pm$0.17 dex for stars with [Fe/H]<-1. The…
RR Lyrae stars have long been popular standard candles, but significant advances in methodology and technology have been made in recent years to increase their precision as distance indicators. We present multi-wavelength (optical $UBVR_cI_c$ and Gaia $G, BP, RP$; near-infrared $JHK_s$; mid-infrared $[3.6], [4.5]$) period-luminosity-metallicity (PLZ), period-Wesenheit-metallicity (PWZ) relations, calibrated using photometry obtained from The Carnegie RR Lyrae Program and parallaxes from the Gaia second data release for 55 Galactic field RR Lyrae stars. The metallicity slope, which has long bee…
Although a catalogue of synthetic RGB magnitudes, providing photometric data for a sample of 1346 bright stars, has been recently published, its usefulness is still limited due to the small number of reference stars available, considering that they are distributed throughout the whole celestial sphere, and the fact that they are restricted to Johnson V < 6.6 mag. This work presents synthetic RGB magnitudes for ~15 million stars brighter than Gaia G = 18 mag, making use of a calibration between the RGB magnitudes of the reference bright star sample and the corresponding high quality photometric…
We have done photometric calibration of the 60 cm Nedeljković telescope equipped with FLI PL 230 CCD camera, mounted at the Astronomical Station Vidojevica (Serbia), using standard stars from the Landolt's catalog. We have imaged 31 fields of standard stars using Johnson's $BVRI$ filters during three nights in August 2019. We have measured both extinction and color correction. Relating our calibrated magnitudes to the magnitudes of the standard stars from the Landolt's catalog, we have achieved accuracy of 2\%-5\% for the $BVRI$ magnitudes.
As one of the best ground-based photometric dataset, Pan-STARRS1 (PS1) has been widely used as the reference to calibrate other surveys. In this work, we present an independent validation and re-calibration of the PS1 photometry using spectroscopic data from the LAMOST DR7 and photometric data from the corrected Gaia EDR3 with the Stellar Color Regression (SCR) method. Using per band typically a total of 1.5 million LAMOST-PS1-Gaia stars as standards, we show that the PS1 photometric calibration precisions in the $grizy$ filters are around $4\sim 5$ mmag when averaged over $20'$ regions. Howev…
We are revising the consistency of photometric metallicity formulae widely used for fundamental-mode RR Lyrae (RRab) variables, based on their V- and I-band light curves, published by Jurcsik and Kovács (1996) and Smolec (2005), respectively. 293 RRab variables belonging to 10 globular clusters, all simultaneously containing stars of both Oosterhoff types, are selected for this purpose. We find that on average, the V-band formula results in higher estimated metallicities by about 0.05 dex than the I-band formula. Moreover, we detect a dependency on the Oosterhoff class of the variables for bot…
We present a new methodology for the estimation of stellar atmospheric parameters from narrow- and intermediate-band photometry of the Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey (J-PLUS), and propose a method for target pre-selection of low-metallicity stars for follow-up spectroscopic studies. Photometric metallicity estimates for stars in the globular cluster M15 are determined using this method. By development of a neural-network-based photometry pipeline, we aim to produce estimates of effective temperature, $T_{\rm eff}$, and metallicity, [Fe/H], for a large subset of stars in the J-PLU…
We present the photometric calibration of the twelve optical passbands for the Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey (J-PLUS) third data release (DR3), comprising 1642 pointings of two square degrees each. We selected nearly 1.5 million main sequence stars with a signal-to-noise ratio larger than ten in the twelve J-PLUS passbands and available low-resolution (R = 20-80) spectrum from the blue and red photometers (BP/RP) in Gaia DR3. We compared the synthetic photometry from BP/RP spectra with the J-PLUS instrumental magnitudes, after correcting for the magnitude and color terms between…
We present a new photometric calibration of the WFC3-UVIS and WFC3-IR detectors based on observations collected from 2009 to 2020 for four white dwarfs, namely GRW+70~5824, GD~153, GD~71, G191B2B, and a G-type star, P330E. These calibrations include recent updates to the Hubble Space Telescope primary standard white dwarf models and a new reference flux for Vega. Time-dependent inverse sensitivities for the two WFC3-UVIS chips, UVIS1 and UVIS2, were calculated for all 42 full-frame filters, after accounting for temporal changes in the observed count rates with respect to a reference epoch in 2…
We present a new theoretical calibration of the Stroemgren metallicity index hk by using alpha-enhanced evolutionary models transformed into the observational plane by using atmosphere models with the same chemical mixture. We apply the new Metallicity--Index--Color (MIC) relations to a sample of 85 field red giants (RGs) and find that the difference between photometric estimates and spectroscopic measurements is on average smaller than 0.1 dex with a dispersion of sigma = 0.19 dex. The outcome is the same if we apply the MIC relations to a sample of eight RGs in the bulge globular cluster NGC…
Photometric calibration of the Stellar Abundance and Galactic Evolution Survey (SAGES): Nanshan One-meter Wide-field Telescope g, r, and i band imaging data
We present empirical metallicity-dependent calibrations of effective temperature against colours for dwarfs of luminosity classes IV and V and for giants of luminosity classes II and III, based on a collection from the literature of about two hundred nearby stars with direct effective temperature measurements of better than 2.5 per cent. The calibrations are valid for an effective temperature range 3,100 - 10,000 K for dwarfs of spectral types M5 to A0 and 3,100 - 5,700 K for giants of spectral types K5 to G5. A total of twenty-one colours for dwarfs and eighteen colours for giants of bands of…
We present results on two different Gaia-related topics. First, we describe our efforts to calibrate the three Gaia photometric passbands G, G_BP, and G_RP. We have built a new spectrophotometric HST/STIS library and used it to derive new sensitivity curves and zero points for the three bands, including recipes on how to correct some cases. Second, we present our results on Galactic runaway stars using Gaia DR1 proper motions: we detect 76 runaway stars, 17 (possibly 19) of them not previously identified as such.
The calibrations of star formation rate (SFR) are prone to be affected by many factors, such as metallicity, initial mass function (IMF), evolutionary population synthesis (EPS) models and so on. In this paper we will discuss the effects of binary interactions, metallicity, EPS models and IMF on several widely used SFR calibrations based on the EPS models of Yunnan with and without binary interactions, BC03, SB99, PEGASE and POPSTAR. The inclusion of binary interactions makes these SFR conversion coefficients smaller (less than 0.2dex), and these differences increase with metallicity. The diff…
The Asiago plate archive has been searched for old plates covering the region of the sky containing Nova Del 2013 (V339 Del). The brightness of the progenitor was measured against a deep BVRI photometric sequence that we calibrated on purpose. The mean brightness of the progenitor on Asiago plates is <B>=17.27 and <V>=17.6, for a mean color (B-V) = -0.33. The recorded total amplitude of variation in B band is 0.9 mag. Color and variability are in agreement with a progenitor dominated by the emission from an accretion disc. The progenitor was marginally detected also by the APASS all sky survey…
Context. Reliable metallicity values for M dwarfs are important for studies of the chemical evolution and advancement of planet formation theory in low-mass environments. Historically the determination of stellar parameters of low-mass stars has been challenging due to the low surface temperature, causing several molecules to form in the photospheric layers. In our work we use the fact that infrared high-resolution spectrographs have opened up a new window for investigating M dwarfs. Aims. Metallicity determination using high-resolution spectra is more accurate than the use of low-resolution s…
GU Ori was observed with the 1m telescope at Yunnan Observatories in 2005. To determine its physical properties, the Wilson-Devinney program is used. The results reveal that GU Ori is a W-subtype shallow contact binary with a more massive but cooler star 2. The mass of its two component stars are estimated to be $M_1 = 0.45M_\odot$, $M_2 = 1.05M_\odot$. The O'Connell effect was reported to be negative on the light curves observed in 2005. However, it changed to a positive one on the light curves observed from 2011 to 2012. The mean surface temperatures of star 2 ($T_2$) determined by the two s…
The metallicity is a critical parameter that affects the correct determination fundamental characteristics stellar cluster and has important implications in Galactic and Stellar evolution research. Fewer than 10 % of the 2174 currently catalog open clusters have their metallicity determined in the literature. In this work we present a method for estimating the metallicity of open clusters via non-subjective isochrone fitting using the cross-entropy global optimization algorithm applied to UBV photometric data. The free parameters distance, reddening, age, and metallicity simultaneously determi…
