Neutral hydrogen (HI) intensity mapping (IM) surveys are considered a promising tool for investigating the expansion history of the Universe. In this work, we explore the potential of MeerKAT HI IM observations in interferometer mode to estimate the power spectrum and constrain cosmological parameters within typical dark energy models. We employ an approach called the "delay spectrum," which allows us to separate the weak HI signal from foreground contamination in the frequency domain. Our findings indicate that the choice of survey fields significantly impacts the fractional errors on the power spectrum ($ΔP/P$) within a limited observational time of 10 hours. As the integration time increases from 10 hours to 10,000 hours, $ΔP/P$ progressively decreases until cosmic variance begins to dominate. For a total observation time of 10,000 hours, the lowest $ΔP/P$ at low $k$ can be achieved by tracking 100 points for MeerKAT L-band (900-1200 MHz) and 10 points for MeerKAT UHF-band (580-1000 MHz). Next, we assess the performance of HI IM in constraining typical dark energy models. We find that MeerKAT HI IM survey in interferometer mode demonstrates limited capability in constraining the dark-energy equation of state, even when combined with Planck data.

We explore the possibility of performing an HI intensity mapping survey with the South African MeerKAT radio telescope, which is a precursor to the Square Kilometre Array (SKA). We propose to use cross-correlations between the MeerKAT intensity mapping survey and optical galaxy surveys, in order to mitigate systematic effects and produce robust cosmological measurements. Our forecasts show that precise measurements of the HI signal can be made in the near future. These can be used to constrain HI and cosmological parameters across a wide range of redshift.
Dark matter is believed to constitute the majority of the matter content of the universe, but virtually nothing is known about its nature. Physical properties of a candidate particle can be probed via indirect detection by observing the decay and/or annihilation products. While this has previously been done primarily through gamma-ray studies, the increased sensitivity of new radio interferometers means that searches via the radio bandwidth are the new frontrunners. MeerKAT's high sensitivity, ranging from 3 $μ$Jy beam$^{-1} $ for an 8 arcsecond beam to 10 $μ$Jy beam$^{-1} $ for an 15 arcsecon…
While most purpose-built 21cm intensity mapping experiments are close-packed interferometer arrays, general-purpose dish arrays should also be capable of measuring the cosmological 21cm signal. This can be achieved most efficiently if the array is used as a collection of scanning autocorrelation dishes rather than as an interferometer. As a first step towards demonstrating the feasibility of this observing strategy, we show that we are able to successfully calibrate dual-polarisation autocorrelation data from 64 MeerKAT dishes in the L-band (856-1712 MHz, 4096 channels), with 10.5 hours of dat…
The MeerKAT (64 x 13.5m dish radio interferometer) is South Africa's precursor instrument for the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), exploring dish design, instrumentation, and the characteristics of a Karoo desert site and is projected to be on sky in 2016. One of two top-priority, Key Projects is a single deep field, integrating for 5000 hours total with the aim to detect neutral atomic hydrogen through its 21 cm line emission out to redshift unity and beyond. This first truly deep HI survey will help constrain fueling models for galaxy assembly and evolution. It will measure the evolution of the…

Intensity mapping (IM) with neutral hydrogen is a promising avenue to probe the large scale structure of the Universe. In this paper, we demonstrate that using the 64-dish MeerKAT radio telescope as a connected interferometer, it is possible to make a statistical detection of HI in the post-reionization Universe. With the MIGHTEE (MeerKAT International GHz Tiered Extragalactic Exploration) survey project observing in the L-band ($856 < ν< 1712$ MHz, $z < 0.66$), we can achieve the required sensitivity to measure the HI IM power spectrum on quasi-linear scales, which will provide an important c…
In this paper, we aim at using the DECi-hertz Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (DECIGO), a future Japanese space gravitational-wave antenna sensitive to frequency range between LISA and ground-based detectors, to provide gravitational-wave constraints on the cosmic curvature at $z\sim 5$. In the framework of the well-known distance sum rule, the perfect redshift coverage of the standard sirens observed by DECIGO, compared with lensing observations including the source and lens from LSST, makes such cosmological-model-independent test more natural and general. Focusing on three kin…
We use the simulated gravitational-wave data to explore the evolution of the universe in light of current observations of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO). Taking advantage of state-of-the-art Markov Chain Monte Carlo technique to constrain the basic cosmological parameters, the Hubble constant, present matter density parameter and equation of state of dark energy, we find that LIGO needs about, at least 5-year data accumulation, namely about 1000 events, to achieve the accuracy comparable to the Planck result. We also find that, from a new information channel, th…
We conduct the first case study towards developing optimal foreground mitigation strategies for neutral hydrogen (HI) intensity mapping using radio interferometers at low redshifts. A pipeline for simulation, foreground mitigation and power spectrum estimation is built, which can be used for ongoing and future surveys using MeerKAT and Square Kilometre Array Observatory (SKAO). It simulates realistic sky signals to generate visibility data given instrument and observation specifications, which is subsequently used to perform foreground mitigation and power spectrum estimation. A quadratic esti…
When modified theories of gravity are considered, at most six gravitational wave polarization modes are allowed and classified in tensor modes, the only ones predicted by General Relativity (GR), along with additional vector and scalar modes. Therefore, gravitational waves represent a powerful tool to test alternative theories of gravitation. In this paper, we forecast the sensitivity of third-generation ground-based interferometers, Einstein Telescope and Cosmic Explorer, to non-GR polarization modes focusing on the stochastic gravitational wave background. We consider the latest technical sp…

We explore the potential of using intensity mapping surveys (MeerKAT, SKA) and optical galaxy surveys (DES, LSST) to detect HI clustering and weak gravitational lensing of 21cm emission in auto- and cross-correlation. Our forecasts show that high precision measurements of the clustering and lensing signals can be made in the near future using the intensity mapping technique. Such studies can be used to test the intensity mapping method, and constrain parameters such as the HI density $Ω_{\rm HI}$, the HI bias $b_{\rm HI}$ and the galaxy-HI correlation coefficient $r_{\rm HI-g}$.
We explore constraints on dark energy and modified gravity with forecast 21cm intensity mapping measurements using the Effective Field Theory approach. We construct a realistic mock data set forecasting a low redshift 21cm signal power spectrum $P_{21}(z,k)$ measurement from the MeerKAT radio-telescope. We compute constraints on cosmological and model parameters through Monte Carlo Markov chain techniques, testing both the constraining power of $P_{21}(k)$ alone and its effect when combined with the latest Planck 2018 CMB data. We complement our analysis by testing the effects of tomography fr…
We use the results of previous work building a halo model formalism for the distribution of neutral hydrogen, along with experimental parameters of future radio facilities, to place forecasts on astrophysical and cosmological parameters from next generation surveys. We consider 21 cm intensity mapping surveys conducted using the BINGO, CHIME, FAST, TianLai, MeerKAT and SKA experimental configurations. We work with the 5-parameter cosmological dataset of {$Ω_m, σ_8, h, n_s, Ω_b$} assuming a flat $Λ$CDM model, and the astrophysical parameters {$v_{c,0}, β$} which represent the cutoff and slope o…

Neutral hydrogen (HI) intensity mapping traces the large-scale distribution of matter in the Universe and therefore should correlate with the gamma-ray emission originated from particle dark matter annihilation or from active galactic nuclei and star-forming galaxies, since the related processes occur in the same cosmic structures hosting HI. In this paper, we derive the cross-correlation signal between the brightness temperature of the 21-cm line emission of the HI spin-flip transition in the Universe and the unresolved gamma-ray background. Specifically, we derive forecasts for the cross-cor…

We forecast constraints on neutral hydrogen (HI) and cosmological parameters using near-term intensity mapping surveys with instruments such as BINGO, MeerKAT, and the SKA, and Stage III and IV optical galaxy surveys. If foregrounds and systematic effects can be controlled - a problem which becomes much easier in cross-correlation - these surveys will provide exquisite measurements of the HI density and bias, as well as measurements of the growth of structure, the angular diameter distance, and the Hubble rate, over a wide range of redshift. We also investigate the possibility of detecting the…
Atom interferometers (AIs) as gravitational-wave (GW) detectors have been proposed a decade ago. Both ground and space-based projects will be in construction and preparation in the near future. In this paper, for the first time, we investigate the potential of the space-borne AIs on detecting GW standard sirens and hence the applications on cosmology. We consider AEDGE as our fiducial AI GW detector and estimate the number of bright sirens that would be obtained within a 5-years data-taking period of GW and with the follow-up observation of electromagnetic (EM) counterparts. We then construct …
A detection of B-mode polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropies would confirm the presence of a primordial gravitational wave background (GWB). In the inflation paradigm this would be an unprecedented probe of the energy scale of inflation as it is directly proportional to the power spectrum of the GWB. However, similar tensor perturbations can be produced by the matter fields present during inflation, breaking this simple relationship. It is therefore important to be able to distinguish between different generation mechanisms of the GWB. In this paper, we analyse the …

The 21cm emission of neutral hydrogen is a potential probe of the matter distribution in the Universe after reionisation. Cosmological surveys of this line intensity will be conducted in the coming years by the SKAO and HIRAX experiments, complementary to upcoming galaxy surveys. We present the first forecasts of the cosmological constraints from the combination of the 21cm power spectrum and bispectrum. Fisher forecasts are computed for the constraining power of these surveys on cosmological parameters, the BAO distance functions and the growth function. We also estimate the constraining powe…
We present the science case for surveys with the Tianlai dish array interferometer tuned to the $\left[ 1300, 1400 \right] \mathrm{MHz}$ frequency range. Starting from a realistic generation of mock visibility data according to the survey strategy, we reconstruct a map of the sky and perform a foreground subtraction. We show that a survey of the North Celestial Polar cap during a year of observing time and covering an area of $150 \, \mathrm{deg^2}$ would reach a sensitivity of $ 1.5-2 \, \mathrm{mK} $ per $1 \, \mathrm{MHz} \times 0.25^2 \, \mathrm{deg^2 }$ voxel and be marginally impacted by…
The bispectrum is a 3-point statistic with the potential to provide additional information beyond power spectra analyses of survey datasets. Radio telescopes which broadly survey the 21cm emission from neutral hydrogen (HI) are a promising way to probe LSS and in this work we present an investigation into the HI intensity mapping (IM) bispectrum using simulations. We present a model of the redshift space HI IM bispectrum including observational effects from the radio telescope beam and 21cm foreground contamination. We validate our modelling prescriptions with measurements from robust IM simul…
The large-scale structure growth index $γ$ provides a consistency test of the standard cosmology and is a potential indicator of modified gravity. We investigate the constraints on $γ$ from next-generation spectroscopic surveys, using the power spectrum that is observed in redshift space, i.e., the angular power spectrum. The angular power spectrum avoids the need for an Alcock-Packzynski correction. It also naturally incorporates cosmic evolution and wide-angle effects, without any approximation. We include the cross-correlations between redshift bins, using a hybrid approximation when the to…
The Hubble constant value is currently known to 10% accuracy unless assumptions are made for the cosmology (Sandage et al. 2006). Gravitational lens systems provide another probe of the Hubble constant using time delay measurements. However, current investigations of ~20 time delay lenses, albeit of varying levels of sophistication, have resulted in different values of the Hubble constant ranging from 50-80 km/s/Mpc. In order to reduce uncertainties, more time delay measurements are essential together with better determined mass models (Oguri 2007, Saha et al. 2006). We propose a more efficien…

We perform a forecast analysis of the capability of the eLISA space-based interferometer to constrain models of early and interacting dark energy using gravitational wave standard sirens. We employ simulated catalogues of standard sirens given by merging massive black hole binaries visible by eLISA, with an electromagnetic counterpart detectable by future telescopes. We consider three-arms mission designs with arm length of 1, 2 and 5 million km, 5 years of mission duration and the best-level low frequency noise as recently tested by the LISA Pathfinder. Standard sirens with eLISA give access …
We present a new halo model of neutral hydrogen (HI) calibrated to galaxy formation simulations at redshifts $z\sim0.1$ and $z\sim1.0$ that we employ to investigate the constraining power of interferometric HI intensity mapping on HI astrophysics. We demonstrate that constraints on the small-scale HI power spectrum can break the degeneracy between the HI density $Ω_{\rm HI}$ and the HI bias $b_{\rm HI}$. For $z\sim0.1$, we forecast that an accurate measurement of $Ω_{\rm HI}$ up to 6% level precision and the large-scale HI bias $b_{\rm HI}^0$ up to 1% level precision can be achieved using Squa…
Using the 21 cm intensity mapping (IM) technique can efficiently perform large-scale neutral hydrogen surveys, and this method has great potential for measuring dark-energy parameters. Some 21 cm IM experiments aiming at measuring dark energy in the redshift range of $0<z<3$ have been proposed and performed, in which the typical ones using single-dish mode include e.g., BINGO, FAST, and SKA1-MID, and those using interferometric mode include e.g., HIRAX, CHIME, and Tianlai. In this work, we make a forecast for these typical 21 cm IM experiments on their capability of measuring parameters of dar…
We develop and demonstrate an acceleration of the Liu & Tegmark quadratic estimator formalism for inverse variance foreground subtraction and power spectrum estimation in 21 cm tomography from O(N^3) to O(N log N), where N is the number of voxels of data. This technique makes feasible the megavoxel scale analysis necessary for current and upcoming radio interferometers by making only moderately restrictive assumptions about foreground models and survey geometry. We exploit iterative and Monte Carlo techniques and the symmetries of the foreground covariance matrices to quickly estimate the 21 c…
