Context. Thanks to more than 20 years of monitoring, the radial velocity (RV) method has detected long-period companions (P > 10yr) around several dozens of stars. Yet, the true nature of these companions remains unclear because of the uncertainty as to the inclination of the companion orbital plane. Aims. We wish to constrain the orbital inclination and the true mass of long-period single companions. Methods. We used a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) fitting algorithm to combine RV measurements with absolute astrometry and, when available, relative astrometry data. Results. We have lifted the sin(i) indetermination for 7 seven long-period companions. We find true masses in the planetary mass range for the candidate planets detected in the following systems: Epsilon Indi A, HD 13931, HD 115954, and HD 222155. The mass of HD 219077 b is close to the deuterium-burning limit and its nature is uncertain because of the imprecise mass of the host star. Using additional RV measurements, we refine the orbital parameters of HIP 70849 b and find a mass in the planetary range. By combining RV data with absolute and relative astrometry, we significantly improve the characterization of HD 211847 B and properly determine its mass, which appears to be in the low-mass star range. This work illustrates how Gaia and Hipparcos allow for the orbital properties and masses of long-period RV companions to be further constrained.
Aims. With an observing time span of more than 20 years, the CORALIE radial-velocity survey is able to detect long-term trends in data corresponding to companions with masses and separations accessible to direct imaging. Combining exoplanet detection techniques such as radial velocities from the CORALIE survey, astrometric accelerations from Hipparcos and Gaia eDR3, and relative astrometry from direct imaging, removes the degeneracy of unknown orbital parameters. This allows precise model-independent masses of detected companions to be derived, which provides a powerful tool to test models of …
The extensive timespan of modern radial velocity surveys has made the discovery of long-period substellar companions more common in recent years, however measuring the true masses of these objects remains challenging. Astrometry from the Gaia mission is expected to provide mass measurements for many of these long-period companions, but this data is not yet available. However, combining proper motion data from Gaia DR2 and the earlier Hipparcos mission makes it possible to measure true masses of substellar companions in favourable cases. In this work, we combine radial velocities with Hipparcos…
The ESA global astrometry space mission Gaia has been monitoring the position of a billion stars since 2014. The analysis of such a massive dataset is challenging in terms of the data processing involved. In particular, the blind detection and characterization of single or multiple companions to stars (planets, brown dwarfs, or stars) using Gaia astrometry requires highly efficient algorithms. In this article, we present a set of analytical methods to detect and characterize companions in scanning space astrometric time series as well as via a combination of astrometric and radial velocity tim…
With Hubble Space Telescope Fine Guidance Sensor astrometry and published and previously unpublished radial velocity measures we explore the exoplanetary system mu Arae. Our modeling of the radial velocities results in improved orbital elements for the four previously known components. Our astrometry contains no evidence for any known companion, but provides upper limits for three companion masses. A final summary of all past Fine Guidance Sensor exoplanet astrometry results uncover a bias towards small inclinations (more face-on than edge-on). This bias remains unexplained by either small num…
We present constraints on the presence of substellar companions to the nearby ($d\sim7.6$ pc), young ($440\pm40$ Myr) K4Ve star TW Piscis Austrini, the wide ($\sim$0.3 pc) companion to the A4V star Fomalhaut. We combined absolute astrometry from Hipparcos and Gaia with literature radial velocity measurements and dedicated high-contrast imaging observations obtained with Keck/NIRC2 to achieve sensitivity to brown dwarf and planetary-mass companions ($\gtrsim2$ M$_{\rm Jup}$) over many decades of orbital period ($\lesssim 10^3$ yr). The significant astrometric acceleration measured between the H…
To fully constrain the orbits of low mass circumstellar companions, we conduct combined analyses of the radial velocity data as well as the Gaia and Hipparcos astrometric data for eight nearby systems. Our study shows that companion-induced position and proper motion differences between Gaia and Hipparcos are significant enough to constrain orbits of low mass companions to a precision comparable with previous combined analyses of direct imaging and radial velocity data. We find that our method is robust to whether we use Gaia DR2 or Gaia EDR3, as well as whether we use all of the data, or just…
We measure dynamical masses for five objects--three ultracool dwarfs, one low-mass star, and one white dwarf--by fitting orbits to a combination of the Hipparcos-Gaia Catalog of Accelerations, literature radial velocities, and relative astrometry. Our approach provides precise masses without any assumptions about the primary star, even though the observations typically cover only a small fraction of an orbit. We also perform a uniform re-analysis of the host stars' ages. Two of our objects, HD 4747B and HR 7672B, already have precise dynamical masses near the stellar/substellar boundary and ar…

We present the SCExAO direct imaging discovery and characterization of a low-mass companion to the nearby young A7IV star, HD 91312. SCExAO/CHARIS $JHK$ (1.1-2.4 $μm$) spectra and SCExAO/HiCIAO $H$ band imaging identify the companion over a two year baseline in a highly inclined orbit with a maximum projected separation of 8 au. The companion, HD 91312 B, induces an 8.8-$σ$ astrometric acceleration on the star as seen with the Gaia & Hipparcos satellites and a long-term radial velocity trend as previously identified by Borgniet et al. (2019). HD 91312 B's spectrum is consistent with that of an…
Companions embedded in the cavities of transitional circumstellar disks have been observed to exhibit excess luminosity at H$α$, an indication that they are actively accreting. We report 5 years (2013-2018) of monitoring of the position and H$α$ excess luminosity of the embedded, accreting low-mass stellar companion HD 142527 B from the MagAO/VisAO instrument. We use pyklip, a python implementation of the Karhounen-Loeve Image Processing algorithm, to detect the companion. Using pyklip forward modeling, we constrain the relative astrometry to $1-2 \mathrm{mas}$ precision and achieve sufficient…
High contrast imaging enables the determination of orbital parameters for substellar companions (planets, brown dwarfs) from the observed relative astrometry and the estimation of model and age-dependent masses from their observed magnitudes or spectra. Combining astrometric positions with radial velocity gives direct constraints on the orbit and on the dynamical masses of companions. A brown dwarf was discovered with the VLT/SPHERE instrument in 2017, which orbits at $\sim$ 11 au around HD 206893. Its mass was estimated between 12 and 50 $M_{Jup}$ from evolutionary models and its photometry. …

Know the Star, Know the Planet. III. Discovery of Late-Type Companions to Two Exoplanet Host Stars
Model-independent masses of substellar companions are critical tools to validate models of planet and brown dwarf cooling, test their input physics, and determine the formation and evolution of these objects. In this work, we measure the dynamical mass and orbit of the young substellar companion HD 984 B. We obtained new high-contrast imaging of the HD 984 system with Keck/NIRC2 which expands the baseline of relative astrometry from 3 to 8 years. We also present new radial velocities of the host star with the Habitable-Zone Planet Finder spectrograph at the Hobby-Eberly Telescope. Furthermore,…
We present the direct imaging discovery of a low-mass companion to the nearby accelerating F star, HIP 5319, using SCExAO coupled with the CHARIS, VAMPIRES, and MEC instruments in addition to Keck/NIRC2 imaging. CHARIS $JHK$ (1.1-2.4 $μ$m) spectroscopic data combined with VAMPIRES 750 nm, MEC $Y$, and NIRC2 $L_{\rm p}$ photometry is best matched by an M3--M7 object with an effective temperature of T=3200 K and surface gravity log($g$)=5.5. Using the relative astrometry for HIP 5319 B from CHARIS and NIRC2 and absolute astrometry for the primary from $Gaia$ and $Hipparcos$ and adopting a log-no…
We present first results from a new exoplanet direct imaging survey being carried out with the Subaru Coronagraphic Extreme Adaptive Optics project (SCExAO) coupled to the CHARIS integral field spectrograph and assisted with Keck/NIRC2, targeting stars showing evidence for an astrometric acceleration from the Hipparcos and Gaia satellites. Near-infrared spectra from CHARIS and thermal infrared photometry from NIRC2 constrain newly-discovered companion spectral types, temperatures, and gravities. Relative astrometry of companions from SCExAO/CHARIS and NIRC2 and absolute astrometry of the star …
We report the direct imaging discovery of a low-mass companion to the nearby accelerating A star, HIP 109427, with the Subaru Coronagraphic Extreme Adaptive Optics (SCExAO) instrument coupled with the MKID Exoplanet Camera (MEC) and CHARIS integral field spectrograph. CHARIS data reduced with reference star PSF subtraction yield 1.1-2.4 $μ$m spectra. MEC reveals the companion in $Y$ and $J$ band at a comparable signal-to-noise ratio using stochastic speckle discrimination, with no PSF subtraction techniques. Combined with complementary follow-up $L_{\rm p}$ photometry from Keck/NIRC2, the SCEx…
The light curve of KIC 8462852, a.k.a Boyajian's Star, undergoes deep dips the origin of which remains unclear. A faint star $\approx$2\arcsec to the east was discovered in Keck/NIRC2 imaging in Boyajian et al. (2016), but its status as a binary, and possible contribution to the observed variability, was unclear. Here, we use three epochs of Keck/NIRC2 imaging, spanning five years, in JHK near-infrared bands to obtain 1-mas precision astrometry. We show that the two objects exhibit common proper motion, measure a relative velocity of $μ=0.14\pm0.44$ mas yr$^{-1}$ ($μ=0.30\pm0.93$ km s$^{-1}$) …
The second Gaia data release (Gaia DR2) provided us with the precise five-parameter astrometry for 1.3 billion of sources. As stars passing close to the Solar System are thought to be responsible for influencing the dynamical history of long period comets, we update and extend the list of stars that could potentially perturb motion of these comets. We aim to announce a publicly available database containing an up to date list of stars and stellar systems potentially perturbing long period comets motion. We add new objects and revise previously published lists. Special emphasis was placed on st…
Occultations of stars by asteroids have been observed since 1961, increasing from a very small number to now over 500 annually. We have created and regularly maintain a growing data-set of more than 5,000 observed asteroidal occultations. The data-set includes: the raw observations; astrometry at the 1 mas level based on centre of mass or figure (not illumination); where possible the asteroid's diameter to 5 km or better, and fits to shape models; the separation and diameters of asteroidal satellites; and double star discoveries with typical separations being in the tens of mas or less. The da…

The class of transiting cold Jupiters, orbiting at $\gtrsim0.5-1.0$ au, is to-date underpopulated. Probing their atmospheric composition and physical characteristics is particularly valuable, as it allows for direct comparisons with the Solar System giant planets. We investigate some aspects of the synergy between Gaia astrometry and other ground-based and space-borne programs for detection and characterization of such companions. We carry out numerical simulations of Gaia observations of systems with one cold transiting gas giant, using Jovian planets around a sample of nearby low-mass stars …
We place the first constraints on the obliquity of a planetary-mass companion (PMC) outside of the Solar System. Our target is the directly imaged system 2MASS J01225093-2439505 (2M0122), which consists of a 120 Myr 0.4 M_sun star hosting a 12-27 M_J companion at 50 AU. We constrain all three of the system's angular momentum vectors: how the companion spin axis, the stellar spin axis, and the orbit normal are inclined relative to our line of sight. To accomplish this, we measure projected rotation rates (vsini) for both the star and the companion using new near-infrared high-resolution spectra…
The ability to make independent detections of the signatures of exoplanets with complementary telescopes and instruments brings a new potential for robust identification of exoplanets and precision characterization. We introduce PEXO, a package for Precise EXOplanetology to facilitate the efficient modeling of timing, astrometry, and radial velocity data, which will benefit not only exoplanet science but also various astrophysical studies in general. PEXO is general enough to account for binary motion and stellar reflex motions induced by planetary companions and is precise enough to treat var…
Strong Constraints to the Putative Planet Candidate around VB 10 using Doppler spectroscopy
We present new imaging and spectroscopic observations of the exoplanet host star $γ$ Cep A, and of its low-mass stellar companion $γ$ Cep B. We used AstraLux/CAHA to follow the orbital motion of the companion around its primary, whose radial velocity was determined with spectra of the star, taken with the spectrograph FLECHAS at the University Observatory Jena. We measured the astrometry of $γ$ Cep B relative to its primary in all AstraLux images and determined its apparent SDSS i'-band photometry, for which we obtained i'=9.84$\pm$0.17 mag. Using stellar evolutionary models and the Gaia paral…

We present comprehensive orbital analyses and dynamical masses for the substellar companions Gl~229~B, Gl~758~B, HD~13724~B, HD~19467~B, HD~33632~Ab, and HD~72946~B. Our dynamical fits incorporate radial velocities, relative astrometry, and most importantly calibrated Hipparcos-Gaia EDR3 accelerations. For HD~33632~A and HD~72946 we perform three-body fits that account for their outer stellar companions. We present new relative astrometry of Gl~229~B with Keck/NIRC2, extending its observed baseline to 25 years. We obtain a $<$1\% mass measurement of $71.4 \pm 0.6\,M_{\rm Jup}$ for the first T …
