Conventional methods for human motion synthesis are either deterministic or struggle with the trade-off between motion diversity and motion quality. In response to these limitations, we introduce MoFusion, i.e., a new denoising-diffusion-based framework for high-quality conditional human motion synthesis that can generate long, temporally plausible, and semantically accurate motions based on a range of conditioning contexts (such as music and text). We also present ways to introduce well-known kinematic losses for motion plausibility within the motion diffusion framework through our scheduled weighting strategy. The learned latent space can be used for several interactive motion editing applications -- like inbetweening, seed conditioning, and text-based editing -- thus, providing crucial abilities for virtual character animation and robotics. Through comprehensive quantitative evaluations and a perceptual user study, we demonstrate the effectiveness of MoFusion compared to the state of the art on established benchmarks in the literature. We urge the reader to watch our supplementary video and visit https://vcai.mpi-inf.mpg.de/projects/MoFusion.
Generative modeling of human motion has broad applications in computer animation, virtual reality, and robotics. Conventional approaches develop separate models for different motion synthesis tasks, and typically use a model of a small size to avoid overfitting the scarce data available in each setting. It remains an open question whether developing a single unified model is feasible, which may 1) benefit the acquirement of novel skills by combining skills learned from multiple tasks, and 2) help in increasing the model capacity without overfitting by combining multiple data sources. Unificati…

Semantic layouts based Image synthesizing, which has benefited from the success of Generative Adversarial Network (GAN), has drawn much attention in these days. How to enhance the synthesis image equality while keeping the stochasticity of the GAN is still a challenge. We propose a novel denoising framework to handle this problem. The overlapped objects generation is another challenging task when synthesizing images from a semantic layout to a realistic RGB photo. To overcome this deficiency, we include a one-hot semantic label map to force the generator paying more attention on the overlapped…

The pose-guided person image generation task requires synthesizing photorealistic images of humans in arbitrary poses. The existing approaches use generative adversarial networks that do not necessarily maintain realistic textures or need dense correspondences that struggle to handle complex deformations and severe occlusions. In this work, we show how denoising diffusion models can be applied for high-fidelity person image synthesis with strong sample diversity and enhanced mode coverage of the learnt data distribution. Our proposed Person Image Diffusion Model (PIDM) disintegrates the comple…

Recently most successful image synthesis models are multi stage process to combine the advantages of different methods, which always includes a VAE-like model for faithfully reconstructing embedding to image and a prior model to generate image embedding. At the same time, diffusion models have shown be capacity to generate high-quality synthetic images. Our work proposes a VQ-VAE architecture model with a diffusion decoder (DiVAE) to work as the reconstructing component in image synthesis. We explore how to input image embedding into diffusion model for excellent performance and find that simp…
The lack of large-scale real raw image denoising dataset gives rise to challenges on synthesizing realistic raw image noise for training denoising models. However, the real raw image noise is contributed by many noise sources and varies greatly among different sensors. Existing methods are unable to model all noise sources accurately, and building a noise model for each sensor is also laborious. In this paper, we introduce a new perspective to synthesize noise by directly sampling from the sensor's real noise. It inherently generates accurate raw image noise for different camera sensors. Two e…
Generating realistic motions for digital humans is time-consuming for many graphics applications. Data-driven motion synthesis approaches have seen solid progress in recent years through deep generative models. These results offer high-quality motions but typically suffer in motion style diversity. For the first time, we propose a framework using the denoising diffusion probabilistic model (DDPM) to synthesize styled human motions, integrating two tasks into one pipeline with increased style diversity compared with traditional motion synthesis methods. Experimental results show that our system…
Image synthesis under multi-modal priors is a useful and challenging task that has received increasing attention in recent years. A major challenge in using generative models to accomplish this task is the lack of paired data containing all modalities (i.e. priors) and corresponding outputs. In recent work, a variational auto-encoder (VAE) model was trained in a weakly supervised manner to address this challenge. Since the generative power of VAEs is usually limited, it is difficult for this method to synthesize images belonging to complex distributions. To this end, we propose a solution base…

In supervised learning for image denoising, usually the paired clean images and noisy images are collected or synthesised to train a denoising model. L2 norm loss or other distance functions are used as the objective function for training. It often leads to an over-smooth result with less image details. In this paper, we regard the denoising task as a problem of estimating the posterior distribution of clean images conditioned on noisy images. We apply the idea of diffusion model to realize generative image denoising. According to the noise model in denoising tasks, we redefine the diffusion p…

We introduce DiffRF, a novel approach for 3D radiance field synthesis based on denoising diffusion probabilistic models. While existing diffusion-based methods operate on images, latent codes, or point cloud data, we are the first to directly generate volumetric radiance fields. To this end, we propose a 3D denoising model which directly operates on an explicit voxel grid representation. However, as radiance fields generated from a set of posed images can be ambiguous and contain artifacts, obtaining ground truth radiance field samples is non-trivial. We address this challenge by pairing the d…

Diffusion-based generative models have recently emerged as powerful solutions for high-quality synthesis in multiple domains. Leveraging the bidirectional Markov chains, diffusion probabilistic models generate samples by inferring the reversed Markov chain based on the learned distribution mapping at the forward diffusion process. In this work, we propose Modiff, a conditional paradigm that benefits from the denoising diffusion probabilistic model (DDPM) to tackle the problem of realistic and diverse action-conditioned 3D skeleton-based motion generation. We are a pioneering attempt that uses …

Speech-driven gesture synthesis is a field of growing interest in virtual human creation. However, a critical challenge is the inherent intricate one-to-many mapping between speech and gestures. Previous studies have explored and achieved significant progress with generative models. Notwithstanding, most synthetic gestures are still vastly less natural. This paper presents DiffMotion, a novel speech-driven gesture synthesis architecture based on diffusion models. The model comprises an autoregressive temporal encoder and a denoising diffusion probability Module. The encoder extracts the tempor…

The availability of large-scale datasets has helped unleash the true potential of deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs). However, for the single-image denoising problem, capturing a real dataset is an unacceptably expensive and cumbersome procedure. Consequently, image denoising algorithms are mostly developed and evaluated on synthetic data that is usually generated with a widespread assumption of additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). While the CNNs achieve impressive results on these synthetic datasets, they do not perform well when applied on real camera images, as reported in recent be…
Generating realistic motions for digital humans is a core but challenging part of computer animations and games, as human motions are both diverse in content and rich in styles. While the latest deep learning approaches have made significant advancements in this domain, they mostly consider motion synthesis and style manipulation as two separate problems. This is mainly due to the challenge of learning both motion contents that account for the inter-class behaviour and styles that account for the intra-class behaviour effectively in a common representation. To tackle this challenge, we propose…

Energy-Based Models (EBMs) assign unnormalized log-probability to data samples. This functionality has a variety of applications, such as sample synthesis, data denoising, sample restoration, outlier detection, Bayesian reasoning, and many more. But training of EBMs using standard maximum likelihood is extremely slow because it requires sampling from the model distribution. Score matching potentially alleviates this problem. In particular, denoising score matching \citep{vincent2011connection} has been successfully used to train EBMs. Using noisy data samples with one fixed noise level, these …

An important task in image processing and neuroimaging is to extract quantitative information from the acquired images in order to make observations about the presence of disease or markers of development in populations. Having a lowdimensional manifold of an image allows for easier statistical comparisons between groups and the synthesis of group representatives. Previous studies have sought to identify the best mapping of brain MRI to a low-dimensional manifold, but have been limited by assumptions of explicit similarity measures. In this work, we use deep learning techniques to investigate …

Reducing the radiation dose in computed tomography (CT) is important to mitigate radiation-induced risks. One option is to employ a well-trained model to compensate for incomplete information and map sparse-view measurements to the CT reconstruction. However, reconstruction from sparsely sampled measurements is insufficient to uniquely characterize an object in CT, and a learned prior model may be inadequate for unencountered cases. Medical modal translation from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to CT is an alternative but may introduce incorrect information into the synthesized CT images in a…
