We show that NV centers could provide distinct signatures of emergent gauge fields in certain phase transitions in spin liquids. We consider the relaxation rate $1/T_1$ of a diamond NV center placed a distance $z_0$ above a crystal consisting of two dimensional layers which hosts a $U(1)$ quantum spin liquid with spinon Fermi surface. We show that during a spinon pairing transition from a $U(1)$ to a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquid, the relaxation rate exhibits a rapid fall just below the pairing transition. The drop is much faster than what can be accounted for by the opening of the energy gap. Instead, the rapid fall with a unique $z_0$ dependence of its height and width, is the signature of the Meissner effect of the gauge field. We identify the organic ET compound which has a phase transition at 6K as a candidate for the experimental observation of this phenomenon.
In a quantum spin liquid, the magnetic moments of the constituent electron spins evade classical long-range order to form an exotic state that is quantum entangled and coherent over macroscopic length scales [1-2]. Such phases offer promising perspectives for device applications in quantum information technologies, and their study can reveal fundamentally novel physics in quantum matter. Quantum spin ice is an appealing proposal of one such state, in which the fundamental ground state properties and excitations are described by an emergent U(1) lattice gauge theory [3-7]. This quantum-coherent…
The Haldane phase represents one of the most important symmetry protected states in modern physics. This state can be realized using spin-1 and spin-${1\over 2}$ Heisenberg models and bosonic particles. Here we explore the emergent Haldane phase in an alternating bond $\mathbb{Z}_3$ parafermion chain, which is different from the previous proposals from fundamental statistics and symmetries. We show that this emergent phase can also be characterized by a modified long-range string order, as well as four-fold degeneracy in the ground state energies and entanglement spectra. This phase is protect…
Proposal for detecting spin-chirality terms in Mott insulators via resonant inelastic x-ray scattering
Three-dimensional gauge theories coupled to fermions can develop interesting nonperturbative dynamics. Here we study in detail the dynamics of $SU(N)$ gauge theories coupled to a Dirac fermion in the rank-two symmetric and antisymmetric representation. We argue that when the Chern-Simons level is sufficiently small the theory develops a quantum phase with an emergent topological field theory. When the Chern-Simons level vanishes, we further argue that a baryon condenses and hence baryon symmetry is spontaneously broken. The infrared theory then consists of a Nambu-Goldstone boson coupled to a …
Prolonged experimental attempts to find magnetic monopoles (i.e., elementary particles with an isolated magnetic charge in three dimensions) have not yet been successful despite intensive efforts made since Dirac's proposal in 1931. Particle physicists have predicted the possible collision and pair annihilation of two magnetic charges with opposite signs. However, if such annihilation exists, its experimental observation would be difficult because its energy scale is predicted to be tremendously high ($\sim$10$^{16}$ GeV). In the present work, we theoretically predict using the Floquet theory …
Since their proposal nearly half a century ago, physicists have sought axions in both high energy and condensed matter settings. Despite intense and growing efforts, to date experimental success has been limited, with the most prominent results arising in the context of topological insulators. Here we propose a novel mechanism whereby axions can be realized in quantum spin liquids. We discuss the necessary symmetry requirements and identify possible experimental realizations in candidate pyrochlore materials. In this context, the axions couple both to the external and to the emergent electroma…
We introduce a quantum spin-1/2 model with many-body correlated Heisenberg-type interactions on the 2D square lattice, designed to host a plaquette valence-bond solid (PVBS) ground state breaking $\mathbb{Z}_4$ symmetry. We carry out a detailed quantum Monte Carlo study of the quantum phase transition between the antiferromagnetic (AFM) and PVBS states. We find a first-order transition, in contrast to previously studied continuous 'deconfined' transitions between the AFM and columnar valence-bond solids. We show that the coexistence state at the AFM--PVBS transition is unexpectedly associated …
Disorder-free localization is a recently discovered phenomenon of nonergodicity that can emerge in quantum many-body systems hosting gauge symmetries when the initial state is prepared in a superposition of gauge superselection sectors. Thermalization is then prevented up to all accessible evolution times despite the model being nonintegrable and translation-invariant. In a recent work [Halimeh, Zhao, Hauke, and Knolle, arXiv:2111.02427], it has been shown that terms linear in the gauge-symmetry generator stabilize disorder-free localization in $\mathrm{U}(1)$ gauge theories against gauge erro…
The enhancement of the spin-space symmetry from the usual $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ to $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ with $N>2$ is promising for finding nontrivial quantum spin liquids, but the realization of $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ spin systems in real materials is still challenging. Although there is a proposal in cold atomic systems, in magnetic materials with a spin-orbital degree of freedom it is difficult to achieve the $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ symmetry by fine tuning. Here we propose a new mechanism by which the $\mathrm{SU}(4)$ symmetry emerges in the strong spin-orbit coupling limit. In $d^1$ transition metal compounds w…
Kitaev materials are promising for realizing exotic quantum spin liquid phases, such as a non-Abelian chiral spin liquid. Motivated by recent experiments in these materials, we theoretically study the novel field-induced quantum phase transitions from the non-Abelian chiral spin liquid to the symmetry-broken zigzag phase and to the trivial polarized state. Utilizing the recently developed dualities of gauge theories, we find these transitions can be described by critical bosons or gapless fermions coupled to emergent non-Abelian gauge fields, and the critical theories are of the type of a QCD$…
We analyze the 2+1 dimensional gauge theory with two fermions in the real adjoint representation with non-zero Chern-Simons level. We propose a new fermion-fermion dualities between strongly-coupled theories and determine the quantum phase using the structure of a `Duality Chain'. We argue that when Chern-Simons level is sufficiently small, the theory in general develops a strongly coupled quantum phase described by an emergent topological field theory. For special cases, our proposal predicts an interesting dynamical scenario with spontaneous breaking of partial 1-form or 0-form global symmet…

Motivated by the recent surge of field-driven phenomena discussed for Kitaev materials, in particular the experimental observation of a finite thermal Hall effect and theoretical proposals for the emergence of additional spin liquid phases beyond the conventional Kitaev spin liquid, we develop a theoretical understanding of the thermal Hall effect in honeycomb Kitaev materials in magnetic fields. Our focus is on gapless U(1) spin liquids with a spinon Fermi surface, which have been shown to arise as field-induced phases. We demonstrate that in the presence of symmetry-allowed, second-neighbor …
