The re-identification (ReID) of individuals over a complex network of cameras is a challenging task, especially under real-world surveillance conditions. Several deep learning models have been proposed for visible-infrared (V-I) person ReID to recognize individuals from images captured using RGB and IR cameras. However, performance may decline considerably if RGB and IR images captured at test time are corrupted (e.g., noise, blur, and weather conditions). Although various data augmentation (DA) methods have been explored to improve the generalization capacity, these are not adapted for V-I person ReID. In this paper, a specialized DA strategy is proposed to address this multimodal setting. Given both the V and I modalities, this strategy allows to diminish the impact of corruption on the accuracy of deep person ReID models. Corruption may be modality-specific, and an additional modality often provides complementary information. Our multimodal DA strategy is designed specifically to encourage modality collaboration and reinforce generalization capability. For instance, punctual masking of modalities forces the model to select the informative modality. Local DA is also explored for advanced selection of features within and among modalities. The impact of training baseline fusion models for V-I person ReID using the proposed multimodal DA strategy is assessed on corrupted versions of the SYSU-MM01, RegDB, and ThermalWORLD datasets in terms of complexity and efficiency. Results indicate that using our strategy provides V-I ReID models the ability to exploit both shared and individual modality knowledge so they can outperform models trained with no or unimodal DA. Person Re-Identification (ReID) aims to recognize a person-of-interest across different places and times. Existing ReID methods rely on images or videos collected using RGB cameras. They extract appearance features like clothes, shoes, hair, etc. Such features, however, can change drastically from one day to the next, leading to inability to identify people over extended time periods. In this paper, we introduce RF-ReID, a novel approach that harnesses radio frequency (RF) signals for longterm person ReID. RF signals traverse clothes and reflect off the human body; thus they can be used to ext…
Person re-identification (ReID) is aimed at identifying the same person across videos captured from different cameras. In the view that networks extracting global features using ordinary network architectures are difficult to extract local features due to their weak attention mechanisms, researchers have proposed a lot of elaborately designed ReID networks, while greatly improving the accuracy, the model size and the feature extraction latency are also soaring. We argue that a relatively compact ordinary network extracting globally pooled features has the capability to extract discriminative l…
Person Re-identification (ReID) is a critical computer vision task which aims to match the same person in images or video sequences. Most current works focus on settings where the resolution of images is kept the same. However, the resolution is a crucial factor in person ReID, especially when the cameras are at different distances from the person or the camera's models are different from each other. In this paper, we propose a novel two-stream network with a lightweight resolution association ReID feature transformation (RAFT) module and a self-weighted attention (SWA) ReID module to evaluate…

Person Re-identification (ReID) has been extensively studied in recent years due to the increasing demand in public security. However, collecting and dealing with sensitive personal data raises privacy concerns. Therefore, federated learning has been explored for Person ReID, which aims to share minimal sensitive data between different parties (clients). However, existing federated learning based person ReID methods generally rely on laborious and time-consuming data annotations and it is difficult to guarantee cross-domain consistency. Thus, in this work, a federated unsupervised cluster-cont…
Most existing works in Person Re-identification (ReID) focus on settings where illumination either is kept the same or has very little fluctuation. However, the changes in the illumination degree may affect the robustness of a ReID algorithm significantly. To address this problem, we proposed a Two-Stream Network that can separate ReID features from lighting features to enhance ReID performance. Its innovations are threefold: (1) A discriminative entropy loss to ensure the ReID features contain no lighting information. (2) A ReID Teacher model trained by images under "neutral" lighting conditi…
The challenge of unsupervised person re-identification (ReID) lies in learning discriminative features without true labels. This paper formulates unsupervised person ReID as a multi-label classification task to progressively seek true labels. Our method starts by assigning each person image with a single-class label, then evolves to multi-label classification by leveraging the updated ReID model for label prediction. The label prediction comprises similarity computation and cycle consistency to ensure the quality of predicted labels. To boost the ReID model training efficiency in multi-label c…

Prevailing deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for person re-IDentification (reID) are usually built upon ResNet or VGG backbones, which were originally designed for classification. Because reID is different from classification, the architecture should be modified accordingly. We propose to automatically search for a CNN architecture that is specifically suitable for the reID task. There are three aspects to be tackled. First, body structural information plays an important role in reID but it is not encoded in backbones. Second, Neural Architecture Search (NAS) automates the process of a…

Pedestrian attributes, e.g., hair length, clothes type and color, locally describe the semantic appearance of a person. Training person re-identification (ReID) algorithms under the supervision of such attributes have proven to be effective in extracting local features which are important for ReID. Unlike person identity, attributes are consistent across different domains (or datasets). However, most of ReID datasets lack attribute annotations. On the other hand, there are several datasets labeled with sufficient attributes for the case of pedestrian attribute recognition. Exploiting such data…

Partial person re-identification (ReID) is a challenging task because only partial information of person images is available for matching target persons. Few studies, especially on deep learning, have focused on matching partial person images with holistic person images. This study presents a novel deep partial ReID framework based on pairwise spatial transformer networks (STNReID), which can be trained on existing holistic person datasets. STNReID includes a spatial transformer network (STN) module and a ReID module. The STN module samples an affined image (a semantically corresponding patch)…

When deploying person re-identification (ReID) model in safety-critical applications, it is pivotal to understanding the robustness of the model against a diverse array of image corruptions. However, current evaluations of person ReID only consider the performance on clean datasets and ignore images in various corrupted scenarios. In this work, we comprehensively establish six ReID benchmarks for learning corruption invariant representation. In the field of ReID, we are the first to conduct an exhaustive study on corruption invariant learning in single- and cross-modality datasets, including M…
Adversarial attacks have been recently investigated in person re-identification. These attacks perform well under cross dataset or cross model setting. However, the challenges present in cross-dataset cross-model scenario does not allow these models to achieve similar accuracy. To this end, we propose our method with the goal of achieving better transferability against different models and across datasets. We generate a mask to obtain better performance across models and use meta learning to boost the generalizability in the challenging cross-dataset cross-model setting. Experiments on Market-…
Recently privacy concerns of person re-identification (ReID) raise more and more attention and preserving the privacy of the pedestrian images used by ReID methods become essential. De-identification (DeID) methods alleviate privacy issues by removing the identity-related of the ReID data. However, most of the existing DeID methods tend to remove all personal identity-related information and compromise the usability of de-identified data on the ReID task. In this paper, we aim to develop a technique that can achieve a good trade-off between privacy protection and data usability for person ReID…

Contemporary person re-identification (\reid) methods usually require access to data from the deployment camera network during training in order to perform well. This is because contemporary \reid{} models trained on one dataset do not generalise to other camera networks due to the domain-shift between datasets. This requirement is often the bottleneck for deploying \reid{} systems in practical security or commercial applications, as it may be impossible to collect this data in advance or prohibitively costly to annotate it. This paper alleviates this issue by proposing a simple baseline for d…

Recently, with the explosive demands of practical applications, a lot of research efforts have been dedicated to heterogeneous person re-identification (Hetero-ReID). In this paper, we provide a comprehensive review of state-of-the-art Hetero-ReID methods that address the challenge of inter-modality discrepancies. According to the application scenario, we classify the methods into four categories -- low-resolution, infrared, …
The task of person re-identification (ReID) has attracted growing attention in recent years leading to improved performance, albeit with little focus on real-world applications. Most SotA methods are based on heavy pre-trained models, e.g. ResNet50 (~25M parameters), which makes them less practical and more tedious to explore architecture modifications. In this study, we focus on a small-sized randomly initialized model that enables us to easily introduce architecture and training modifications suitable for person ReID. The outcomes of our study are a compact network and a fitting training reg…

Person re-identification (ReID) focuses on identifying people across different scenes in video surveillance, which is usually formulated as a binary classification task or a ranking task in current person ReID approaches. In this paper, we take both tasks into account and propose a multi-task deep network (MTDnet) that makes use of their own advantages and jointly optimize the two tasks simultaneously for person ReID. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to integrate both tasks in one network to solve the person ReID. We show that our proposed architecture significantly boosts the pe…
While recent person re-identification (ReID) methods achieve high accuracy in a supervised setting, their generalization to an unlabelled domain is still an open problem. In this paper, we introduce a novel unsupervised disentanglement generative adversarial network (UD-GAN) to address the domain adaptation issue of supervised person ReID. Our framework jointly trains a ReID network for discriminative features extraction in a source labelled domain using identity annotation, and adapts the ReID model to an unlabelled target domain by learning disentangled latent representations on the domain. …

Person Re-identification (ReID) has been advanced remarkably over the last 10 years along with the rapid development of deep learning for visual recognition. However, the i.i.d. (independent and identically distributed) assumption commonly held in most deep learning models is somewhat non-applicable to ReID considering its objective to identify images of the same pedestrian across cameras at different locations often of variable and independent domain characteristics that are also subject to view-biased data distribution. In this work, we propose a Feature-Distribution Perturbation and Calibra…

Person Re-Identification (ReID) is a challenging problem in many video analytics and surveillance applications, where a person's identity must be associated across a distributed non-overlapping network of cameras. Video-based person ReID has recently gained much interest because it allows capturing discriminant spatio-temporal information from video clips that is unavailable for image-based ReID. Despite recent advances, deep learning (DL) models for video ReID often fail to leverage this information to improve the robustness of feature representations. In this paper, the motion pattern of a p…

Learning modality invariant features is central to the problem of Visible-Thermal cross-modal Person Reidentification (VT-ReID), where query and gallery images come from different modalities. Existing works implicitly align the modalities in pixel and feature spaces by either using adversarial learning or carefully designing feature extraction modules that heavily rely on domain knowledge. We propose a simple but effective framework, MMD-ReID, that reduces the modality gap by an explicit discrepancy reduction constraint. MMD-ReID takes inspiration from Maximum Mean Discrepancy (MMD), a widely …

Due to its potential wide applications in video surveillance and other computer vision tasks like tracking, person re-identification (ReID) has become popular and been widely investigated. However, conventional person re-identification can only handle RGB color images, which will fail at dark conditions. Thus RGB-infrared ReID (also known as Infrared-Visible ReID or Visible-Thermal ReID) is proposed. Apart from appearance discrepancy in traditional ReID caused by illumination, pose variations and viewpoint changes, modality discrepancy produced by cameras of the different spectrum also exists,…

Existing person re-identification (ReID) methods typically directly load the pre-trained ImageNet weights for initialization. However, as a fine-grained classification task, ReID is more challenging and exists a large domain gap between ImageNet classification. Inspired by the great success of self-supervised representation learning with contrastive objectives, in this paper, we design an Unsupervised Pre-training framework for ReID based on the contrastive learning (CL) pipeline, dubbed UP-ReID. During the pre-training, we attempt to address two critical issues for learning fine-grained ReID …
Recently, GAN based method has demonstrated strong effectiveness in generating augmentation data for person re-identification (ReID), on account of its ability to bridge the gap between domains and enrich the data variety in feature space. However, most of the ReID works pick all the GAN generated data as additional training samples or evaluate the quality of GAN generation at the entire data set level, ignoring the image-level essential feature of data in ReID task. In this paper, we analyze the in-depth characteristics of ReID sample and solve the problem of "What makes a GAN-generated image…
With the rise of deep learning methods, person Re-Identification (ReID) performance has been improved tremendously in many public datasets. However, most public ReID datasets are collected in a short time window in which persons' appearance rarely changes. In real-world applications such as in a shopping mall, the same person's clothing may change, and different persons may wearing similar clothes. All these cases can result in an inconsistent ReID performance, revealing a critical problem that current ReID models heavily rely on person's apparels. Therefore, it is critical to learn an apparel…
