Advective dispersion of solutes in long thin axisymmetric channels is important to the analysis and design of a wide range of devices, including chemical separation systems and microfluidic chips. Despite extensive analysis of Taylor dispersion in various scenarios, most studies focused on long-term dispersion behavior and cannot capture the transient evolution of solute zone across the spatial variations in the channel. In the current study, we analyze the Taylor-Aris dispersion for arbitrarily shaped axisymmetric channels. We derive an expression for solute dynamics in terms of two coupled ordinary differential equations (ODEs). These two ODEs allow prediction of the time evolution of the mean location and axial (standard deviation) width of the solute zone as a function of the channel geometry. We compare and benchmark our predictions with Brownian dynamics simulations for a variety of cases including linearly expanding/converging channels and periodic channels. We also present an analytical description of the physical regimes of transient positive versus negative axial growth of solute width. Finally, to further demonstrate the utility of the analysis, we demonstrate a method to engineer channel geometries to achieve desired solute width distributions over space and time. We apply the latter analysis to generate a geometry that results in a constant axial width and a second geometry that results in a sinusoidal axial variance in space.
We study the stability of cylindrical Taylor-Couette flow in the presence of azimuthal magnetic fields, and show that one obtains non-axisymmetric magnetorotational instabilities, having azimuthal wavenumber m=1. For Omega_o/Omega_i only slightly greater than the Rayleigh value (r_i/r_o)^2, the critical Reynolds and Hartmann numbers are Re_c ~ 10^3 and Ha_c ~ 10^2, independent of the magnetic Prandtl number Pm. These values are sufficiently small that it should be possible to obtain these instabilities in the PROMISE experimental facility.
This study aims to investigate the possible sources of non-axisymmetric disturbances and their propagation mechanism in Taylor Couette flow (TCF) for wide gap problems using direct numerical simulation with a radius ratio of 0.5 and Reynolds number (Re) ranging from 60 to 650. Here, attention is focused on the viscous layer (VL) thickness in near-wall regions and its spatial distribution along the axial direction to gain an insight into the origin and propagation of non-axisymmetric disturbances. The results show that an axisymmetric Taylor-vortex flow occurs when Re is between 68 and 425. Abo…
The `Rayleigh line' $μ=η^2$, where $μ=Ω_o/Ω_i$ and $η=r_i/r_o$ are respectively the rotation and radius ratios between inner (subscript `i') and outer (subscript `o') cylinders, is regarded as marking the limit of centrifugal instability (CI) in unstratified inviscid Taylor-Couette flow, for both axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric modes. Non-axisymmetric stratorotational instability (SRI) is known to set in for anticyclonic rotation ratios beyond that line, i.e. $η^2<μ<1$ for axially stably-stratified Taylor-Couette flow, but the competition between CI and SRI in the range $μ<η^2$ has not yet b…
Recent experiments show that shear-banded flows of semi-dilute worm-like micelles in Taylor-Couette geometry exhibit a flow instability in the form of Taylor-like vortices. Here we perform the non-axisymmetric linear stability analysis of the diffusive Johnson-Segalman model of shear banding and show that the nature of this instability depends on the applied shear rate. For the experimentally relevant parameters, we find that at the beginning of the stress plateau the instability is driven by the interface between the bands, while most of the stress plateau is occupied by the bulk instability …
We study the nonlinear mode competition of various spiral instabilities in magnetised Taylor-Couette flow. The resulting finite-amplitude mixed-mode solution branches are tracked using the annular-parallelogram periodic domain approach developed by Deguchi & Altmeyer (2013). Mode competition phenomena are studied in both the anti-cyclonic and cyclonic Rayleigh-stable regimes. In the anti-cyclonic sub-rotation regime, with the inner cylinder rotating faster than the outer, Hollerbach, Teeluck & Rudiger (2010) found competing axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric magneto-rotational linearly unstable…
In an earlier paper we showed that the combination of azimuthal magnetic fields and super-rotation in Taylor-Couette flows of conducting fluids can be unstable against non-axisymmetric perturbations if the magnetic Prandtl number of the fluid is $Pm\neq 1$. Here we demonstrate that the addition of a weak axial field component may allow axisymmetric perturbation patterns for $Pm$ of order unity depending on the boundary conditions. The axisymmetric modes only occur for magnetic Mach numbers (of the azimuthal field) of order unity, while higher values are necessary for non-axisymmetric modes. Th…
Structured on the paradigmatic Navier-Stokes flow model, we study a stochastically forced Taylor-Couette system in the narrow gap limit, in order to analyze the simultaneous impact of a non-conserved (Gaussian) force and a nonlinear perturbation, in determining linear stability. Our analysis identifies key parametric windows within which the model remarkably retains its linear stability, even against jointly varying stochastic forcing and nonlinear fluctuations. We identify this feature as a {\it latent universality}, that we then utilize to answer the elusive question as to how a recent groun…
In this study, we examine the linear stability of an axisymmetric Taylor bubble moving steadily in a flowing liquid enclosed in a circular tube. Linearisation is performed about axisymmetric base states obtained in Part I of this study by Abubakar and Matar (2021). The stability is characterised by the dimensionless inverse viscosity $\left( Nf \right)$, Eötvös $\left( Eo \right)$, and Froude numbers $\left( U_m \right)$, the latter being based on the centreline liquid velocity. The analysis shows that there exist regions of $(Nf,Eo,U_m)$ space within which the bubble is unstable and assumes a…
The aim of this study is to derive accurate models for quantities characterizing the dynamics of droplets of non-vanishing viscosity in capillaries. In particular, we propose models for the uniform-film thickness separating the droplet from the tube walls, for the droplet front and rear curvatures and pressure jumps, and for the droplet velocity in a range of capillary numbers, $Ca$, from $10^{-4}$ to $1$ and inner-to-outer viscosity ratios, $λ$, from $0$, i.e. a bubble, to high viscosity droplets. Theoretical asymptotic results obtained in the limit of small capillary number are combined with…
A number of time-periodic flows have been found to have a property called RZIF: when a linear stability analysis is carried out about the temporal mean (rather than the usual steady state), an eigenvalue is obtained whose Real part is Zero and whose Imaginary part is the nonlinear Frequency. For two-dimensional thermosolutal convection, a Hopf bifurcation leads to traveling waves which satisfy the RZIF property and standing waves which do not. We have investigated this property numerically for counter-rotating Couette-Taylor flow, in which a Hopf bifurcation gives rise to branches of upwards a…

The instability of a supercritical Taylor-Couette flow of a conducting fluid with resting outer cylinder under the influence of a uniform axial electric current is investigated for magnetic Prandtl number Pm=1. In the linear theory the critical Reynolds number for axisymmetric perturbations is not influenced by the current-induced axisymmetric magnetic field but all axisymmetric magnetic perturbations decay. The nonaxisymmetric perturbations with m=1 are excited even without rotation for large enough Hartmann numbers ("Tayler instability"). For slow rotation their growth rates scale with the A…
We study magnetic Taylor-Couette flow in a system having nondimensional radii $r_i=1$ and $r_o=2$, and periodic in the axial direction with wavelengths $h\ge100$. The rotation ratio of the inner and outer cylinders is adjusted to be slightly in the Rayleigh-stable regime, where magnetic fields are required to destabilize the flow, in this case triggering the axisymmetric helical magnetorotational instability (HMRI). Two choices of imposed magnetic field are considered, both having the same azimuthal component $B_ϕ=r^{-1}$, but differing axial components. The first choice has $B_z=0.1$, and yie…
We conduct a global, weakly nonlinear analysis of the magnetorotational instability (MRI) in a Taylor-Couette flow. This is a multiscale perturbative treatment of the nonideal, axisymmetric MRI near threshold, subject to realistic radial boundary conditions and cylindrical geometry. We analyze both the standard MRI, initialized by a constant vertical background magnetic field, and the helical MRI, with an azimuthal background field component. This is the first weakly nonlinear analysis of the MRI in a global Taylor-Couette geometry, as well as the first weakly nonlinear analysis of the helical…
Magnetorotational instability (MRI) is one of the fundamental processes in astrophysics, driving angular momentum transport and mass accretion in a wide variety of cosmic objects. Despite much theoretical/numerical and experimental efforts over the last decades, its saturation mechanism and amplitude, which sets the angular momentum transport rate, remains not well understood, especially in the limit of high resistivity, or small magnetic Prandtl numbers typical to interiors (dead zones) of protoplanetary disks, liquid cores of planets and liquid metals in laboratory. Using direct numerical si…

Hollerbach and Rudiger have reported a new type of magnetorotational instability (MRI) in magnetized Taylor-Couette flow in the presence of combined axial and azimuthal magnetic fields. The salient advantage of this "helical'' MRI (HMRI) is that marginal instability occurs at arbitrarily low magnetic Reynolds and Lundquist numbers, suggesting that HMRI might be easier to realize than standard MRI (axial field only). We confirm their results, calculate HMRI growth rates, and show that in the resistive limit, HMRI is a weakly destabilized inertial oscillation propagating in a unique direction al…
We analyze the stability of a cylindrical Couette flow under the imposition of a weak axial flow in case of a very short cylinder with a narrow annulus gap. We consider an incompressible viscous fluid which is contained in the narrow gap between two concentric short cylinders, where the inner cylinder rotates with constant angular velocity. The caps of the cylinders have narrow tubes conically tapering to super narrow slits which allow for an axial flow along the surface of the inner cylinder. The approximated solution for the Couette flow for short cylinders was found and used for the stabili…
