The TYPHOON program is producing an atlas of spectroscopic data cubes of 44 large-angular-sized galaxies with complete spatial coverage from 3650-9000 A. This survey provides an unparalleled opportunity to study variations in the interstellar medium (ISM) properties within individual HII regions across the entire star-forming disks of nearby galaxies. This can provide key insights into the spatial distribution and resolved properties of the ISM to understand how efficiently metals are mixed and redistributed across spirals and dwarf galaxies. In this Proceeding, we present early science results from six nearby spiral galaxies as part of the TYPHOON program from Grasha et al. (2022). We use HIIPhot to identify the HII regions within the galaxy based on the surface brightness of the H-alpha emission line and measure variations of the HII region oxygen abundance. In this initial work, we find that while the spiral pattern plays a role in organizing the ISM, it alone does not establish the relatively uniform azimuthal variations we observe across all the galaxies. Differences in the metal abundances are more likely driven by the strong correlations with the local physical conditions. We find a strong and positive correlation between the ionization parameter and the local abundances as measured by the relative metallicity offset $Δ$(O/H), indicating a tight relationship between local physical conditions and their localized enrichment of the ISM. These variations can be explained by a combination of localized, star formation-driven self-enrichment and large-scale mixing-driven dilution due to the passing of spiral density waves.
We demonstrate a robust method of resolving the star-formation and AGN contributions to emission lines using two very well known AGN systems: NGC 1365, and NGC 1068, using the high spatial resolution data from the TYPHOON/PrISM survey. We expand the previous method of calculating the AGN fraction by using theoretical-based model grids rather than empirical points. The high spatial resolution of the TYPHOON/PrISM observations show evidence of both star formation and AGN activity occurring in the nuclei of the two galaxies. We rebin the data to the lower resolutions, typically found in other int…
Bars play an important role in mixing material in the inner regions of galaxies and stimulating radial migration. Previous observations have found evidence for the impact of a bar on metallicity gradients but the effect is still inconclusive. We use the TYPHOON/PrISM survey to investigate the metallicity gradients along and beyond the bar region across the entire star-forming disk of five nearby galaxies. Using emission line diagrams to identify star-forming spaxels, we recover the global metallicity gradients ranging from -0.0162 to -0.073 dex/kpc with evidence that the galactic bars act as a…
Integral-field spectroscopy in the near-infrared (NIR) is a powerful tool to analyze the gaseous and stellar distributions and kinematics, as well as the excitation mechanisms in the centers of galaxies. The unique combination of NIR and sub-mm data at comparable high angular resolution, which has just been possible with SINFONI and ALMA, allows to trace warm and cold gas reservoirs. Only the NIR gives an unobscured view to the center and allows to study the conditions and impact of star formation in the centers of galaxies in a spatially resolved way. Here, we present recent studies of nearby…
The study of the dynamic properties of bubbles in the interstellar medium is important for understanding the feedback mechanisms from star-formation processes in galaxies. The ongoing integral field spectroscopy of nearby star-forming galaxies reveals many expanding bubbles and superbubbles identified by the local increase in gas velocity dispersion. The limited angular resolution often prevents bona fide measures of the expansion velocities in galaxies outside the Local Group, even despite sufficient spectroscopic resolution. We present a method that makes it possible to measure the expansion…
We carried out the deep spectroscopic observations of the nearby cluster A2151 with AF2/WYFFOS@WHT. The caustic technique enables us to identify 360 members brighter than $M_r = -16$ and within 1.3$R_{200}$. We separated the members into subsamples according to photometrical and dynamical properties such as colour, local environment and infall time. The completeness of the catalogue and our large sample allow us to analyse the velocity dispersion and the luminosity functions of the identified populations. We found evidence of a cluster still in its collapsing phase. The LF of the red populatio…
One of the unsettled, important problems in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) is the major ionization mechanism of gas clouds in their narrow-line regions (NLRs). In order to investigate this issue, we present our $J$-band spectroscopic observations for a sample of 26 nearby Seyfert galaxies. In our study, we use the flux ratio of the following two forbidden emission lines, [Fe II]1.257$μ$m and [P II]1.188$μ$m because it is known that this ratio is sensitive to the ionization mechanism. We obtain the [Fe II]/[P II] flux ratio or its lower limit for 19 objects. In addition to our data, we compile t…
We report near-infrared K', L', and M' band imaging observations of the nearby merging galaxy NGC 6240 with the Infrared Camera and Spectrograph on the Subaru telescope. The observations were performed with the assistance of the Subaru Adaptive Optics System, and the achieved spatial resolutions were around 0.10--0.20$^{\prime\prime}$. We also obtained new mid-infrared imaging in the Si-2 filter band (8.7$μ$m) and N-band (7.5--13$μ$m) spectroscopy of this galaxy with the CanariCam on the Gran Telescopio Canarias with a spatial resolution of 0.4--0.5$^{\prime\prime}$. In the K' band image the t…
We present the highlights from our recent study of 22 local (z$<$0.025) type-1 LINERs from the Palomar Survey, on the basis of optical long-slit spectroscopic observations taken with TWIN/CAHA, ALFOSC/NOT and HST/STIS (Cazzoli et al. 2018). Our goals were threefold: (a) explore the AGN- nature of these LINERs by studying the broad (BLR-originated) H$α$ component; (b) derive a reliable interpretation for the multiple narrow components of emission lines by studying their kinematics and ionisation mechanism (via standard BPTs); (c) probe the neutral gas in the nuclei of these LINERs for the first…
In the framework of an ongoing project aimed at searching for and studying eXtremely Metal-Poor (XMP) very gas-rich blue dwarfs in nearby voids, we conducted spectroscopy with the 11-m Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) of 26 candidates, preselected in the first paper of this series (PEPK19). For 23 of them, we detected Oxygen lines, allowing us to estimate the gas O/H ratio. For ten of them, the oxygen abundance is found to be very low, in the range of 12+log(O/H)=6.95-7.30 dex. Of those, four void dwarfs have 12+log(O/H) < 7.19, or Z < Zo/30. For the majority of observed galaxies, the f…
This is the first in a series of three papers describing a project with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope to measure abundances of the neutral interstellar medium (ISM) in a sample of 9 nearby star-forming galaxies. The goal is to assess the (in)homogeneities of the multiphase ISM in galaxies where the bulk of metals can be hidden in the neutral phase, yet the metallicity is inferred from the ionized gas in the HII regions. The sample, spanning a wide range in physical properties, is to date the best suited to investigate the metallicity behavior of the neutral gas …
We present MUSE Integral Field Unit (IFU) observations of five individual HII regions in two giant (>100 pc in radius) star-forming complexes in the low-metallicity ($Z$~0.33 $Z_{\odot}$) nearby (D ~ 2 Mpc) dwarf spiral galaxy NGC 300. We combine the IFU data with high spatial resolution HST photometry to demonstrate the extraction of stellar spectra and the classification of individual stars from ground-based data at the distance of 2 Mpc. For the two star-forming complexes, in which no O-type stars had previously been identified, we find a total of 13 newly identified O-type stars in the mas…
We present single-dish CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) observations for 14 low-redshift quasi-stellar objects (QSOs). In combination with optical integral field spectroscopy we study how the cold gas content relates to the star formation rate (SFR) and black hole accretion rate. CO(1-0) is detected in 8 of 14 targets and CO(2-1) is detected in 7 out of 11 cases. The majority of disc-dominated QSOs reveal gas fractions and depletion times well matching normal star forming systems. Two gas-rich major mergers show clear starburst signatures with higher than average gas fractions and shorter depletion times. …
A spectroscopic analysis of 10 intergalactic star forming objects (ISFOs) and a photometric analysis of 67 ISFOs in a sample of 14 interacting systems is presented. The majority of the ISFOs have relative polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) band strengths similar to those of nearby spiral and starburst galaxies. In contrast to what is observed in blue compact dwarfs (BCDs) and local giant HII regions in the Milky Way (NGC 3603) and the Magellanic Clouds (30 Doradus and N 66), the relative PAH band strengths in ISFOs correspond to models with a significant PAH ion fraction (<50%) and bright e…
Detailed imaging and spectroscopic analysis of the centers of nearby S0 and spiral galaxies shows the existence of "composite bulges", where both classical bulges and disky pseudobulges coexist in the same galaxy. As part of a search for supermassive black holes in nearby galaxy nuclei, we obtained VLT-SINFONI observations in adaptive-optics mode of several of these galaxies. Schwarzschild dynamical modeling enables us to disentangle the stellar orbital structure of the different central components, and to distinguish the differing contributions of kinematically hot (classical bulge) and kinem…
Galaxies in clusters are strongly affected by their environment. They evolve according to several physical mechanisms that are active in clusters. Their efficiency can strongly depend on the orbital configuration of the galaxies. Our aim is to analyse the orbits of the galaxies in the cluster Abell 85, based on the study of the galaxy velocity anisotropy parameter. We have solved the Jeans equation under the assumption that the galaxies in A85 are collisionless objects, within the spherically symmetric gravitational potential of the virialized cluster. The mass of the cluster was estimated wit…
We present an analysis of the H2 emission-line gas kinematics in the inner < 4 arcsec radius of six nearby spiral galaxies, based on AO-assisted integral-field observations obtained in the K-band with SINFONI/VLT. Four of the six galaxies in our sample display ordered H2 velocity fields, consistent with gas moving in the plane of the galaxy and rotating in the same direction as the stars. However, the gas kinematics is typically far from simple circular motion. We can classify the observed velocity fields into four different types of flows, ordered by increasing complexity: (1) circular motion…
We present the second part of results of the on-going project of searching for and studying eXtremely Metal-Poor (XMP, adopted as those with Z(gas) <~ Zo/30, or with 12+log(O/H) <~ 7.21~dex) very gas-rich blue dwarfs in voids. They were first identified in course of the 'unbiased' study of galaxy population in the nearby Lynx-Cancer void. These very rare and unusual galaxies seem to be the best proxies of so-called Very Young Galaxies (VYGs) defined recently in model simulations by Tweed et al. To date, for 16 preselected void XMP candidates, we obtained with the SAO 6-m telescope (BTA) spectra…
Our aim is to understand the role of the environment in the quenching of star formation of galaxies located in the infall cluster region of Abell 85 (A85). This is achieved by studying the post-starburst galaxy population as tracer of recent quenching. By measuring the equivalent width (EW) of the [OII] and Hdelta spectral lines, we classify the galaxies in three groups: passive (PAS), emission line (EL), and post-starburst (PSB) galaxies. The PSB galaxy population represents about 4.5% of the full sample. Dwarf galaxies (Mr > -18.0) account for about 70 - 80% of PSBs, which indicates that mos…
We present the analysis of the full bi-dimensional optical spectral cube of the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 5668, observed with the PPAK IFU at the Calar Alto observatory 3.5m telescope. We make use of broad-band imaging to provide further constraints on the evolutionary history of the galaxy. This dataset will allow us to improve our understanding of the mechanisms that drive the evolution of disks. We investigated the properties of 62 H II regions and concentric rings in NGC 5668 and derived maps in ionized-gas attenuation and chemical (oxygen) abundances. We find that, while inwards of r\,$\si…
Approximately half of the nearby E+A galaxies followed up with 21-cm observations have detectable HI emission. The optical spectra of these galaxies show strong post-starburst stellar populations but no optical emission lines implying star-formation is not ongoing despite the presence of significant gas reservoirs. We have obtained integral field spectroscopic follow up observations of the two brightest, and nearest, of the six E+A galaxies with HI 21-cm emission in the recent sample of Zwaan et al. (2013). In the central regions of both galaxies the observations are consistent with a post-sta…
The spatial distribution of oxygen in the interstellar medium of galaxies is the key to understanding how efficiently metals that are synthesized in massive stars can be redistributed across a galaxy. We present here a case study in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC1365 using 3D optical data obtained in the TYPHOON Program. We find systematic azimuthal variations of the HII region oxygen abundance imprinted on a negative radial gradient. The 0.2 dex azimuthal variations occur over a wide radial range of 0.3 to 0.7 R25 and peak at the two spiral arms in NGC1365. We show that the azimuthal variations…
We present a new deep spectroscopic catalogue for Abell 85, within 3.0 $\times$ 2.6 Mpc$^2$ and down to $M_{r} \sim M_{r}^* +6$. Using the Visible Multi-Object Spectrograph at the Very Large Telescope (VIMOS@VLT) and the AutoFiber 2 at the William Herschel Telescope (AF2@WHT), we obtained almost 1,430 new redshifts for galaxies with $m_r \leq 21$ mag and $\langle μ_{e,r} \rangle \leq 24$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$. These redshifts, together with SDSS-DR6 and NED spectroscopic information, result in 460 confirmed cluster members. This dataset allows the study of the luminosity function (LF) of the clust…

We present results of a study comparing the relative velocity of $\rm Lyα$ absorbers to the rotation velocity of nearby galaxy disks in the local universe ($z \leq 0.03$). We have obtained rotation curves via long-slit spectroscopy of eight galaxies with the Southern African Large Telescope, and combine this dataset with an additional 16 galaxies with data from the literature. Each galaxy appears within $3R_{\rm vir}$ of a QSO sightline with archival Cosmic Origin Spectrograph (COS) spectra. We study the velocity orientation of absorbers with respect to nearby galaxy's rotation, and compare wi…
Constraining the delay-time distribution (DTD) of different supernova (SN) types can shed light on the timescales of galaxy chemical enrichment and feedback processes affecting galaxy dynamics, and SN progenitor properties. Here, we present an approach to recover SN DTDs based on integral field spectroscopy (IFS) of their host galaxies. Using a statistical analysis of a sample of 116 supernovae in 102 galaxies, we evaluate different DTD models for SN types Ia (73), II (28) and Ib/c (15). We find the best SN Ia DTD fit to be a power law with an exponent $α= -1.1\pm 0.3$ (50\% confidence interva…
We have obtained high-spatial-resolution spectrophotometric data on several nearby spiral galaxies with the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) Fabry-Pérot interferometer on the Robert Stobie Spectrograph (RSS) as a part of the RSS Imaging spectroscopy Nearby Galaxy Survey (RINGS). We have successfully reduced two tracks of Fabry-Pérot data for the galaxy NGC 2280 to produce a velocity field of the H-alpha line of excited hydrogen. We have modeled these data with the DiskFit modeling software and found these models to be in excellent agreement both with previous measurements in the literat…
Star formation plays a central role in the evolution of galaxies and of the Universe as a whole. Studies of star-forming regions in the local universe have shown that star formation typically occurs in a clustered fashion. Building a coherent picture of how star clusters form and evolve is therefore critical to our overall understanding of the star formation process. Most clusters disrupt after they form, thus contributing to the field star population. However, the most massive and dense clusters remain bound and survive for a Hubble time. These globular clusters provide unique observational p…
Aims. As a new approach to the study of resolved stellar populations in nearby galaxies, our goal is to demonstrate in NGC300 that integral field spectroscopy with high spatial resolution and excellent seeing conditions reaches an unprecedented depth in severely crowded fields. Methods. MUSE observations with seven pointings in NGC300 have resulted in datacubes that are analyzed in four ways: (1) PSF-fitting 3D spectroscopy with PampelMUSE yields deblended spectra of individually distinguishable stars. The technique also provides samples of planetary nebulae that are complete down to m5007=28.…
The Local Group contains a great number of dwarf irregulars and spheroidals, for which the spectroscopy of individual stars can be obtained. Thus, the chemical evolution of these galaxies can be traced, with the only need of finding populations spanning a large age range and such that we can accurately derive the composition. Planetary nebulae (PNe) are old- and intermediate-age star remnants and their chemical abundances can be obtained up to 3-4 Mpc. H II regions, which are brighter and much easily detected, represent galaxies young content. PNe and H II regions share similar spectroscopic f…
We used VLT/XShooter to target a sample of nearby analogs of Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs). These Lyman Break Analogs (LBAs) are similar to the LBGs in many of their physical properties. We determine electron temperatures using the weak [O III]4363 emission line, and determine the oxygen abundance (O/H) using the direct and strong line methods. We show that the direct and strong line abundances are consistent with established relations within ~0.2 dex. The analogs have nitrogen-to-oxygen ratios (N/O) and ionization parameters (q) that are, on average, offset with respect to typical local galaxie…
We present the results of our ALMA Cycle 0 observations, using HCN/HCO+/HNC J=4-3 lines, of six nearby luminous infrared galaxies with various energetic contributions from active galactic nuclei (AGNs) estimated from previous infrared spectroscopy. These lines are very effective for probing the physical properties of high-density molecular gas around the hidden energy sources in the nuclear regions of these galaxies. We find that HCN to HCO+ J=4-3 flux ratios tend to be higher in AGN-important galaxies than in starburst-dominated regions, as was seen at the J=1-0 transition, while there is no …
We present basic data and modeling for a survey of the cool, photo-ionized Circum-Galactic Medium (CGM) of low-redshift galaxies using far-UV QSO absorption line probes. This survey consists of "targeted" and "serendipitous" CGM subsamples, originally described in Stocke et al. (2013, Paper 1). The targeted subsample probes low-luminosity, late-type galaxies at $z<0.02$ with small impact parameters ($\langleρ\rangle = 71$ kpc), and the serendipitous subsample probes higher luminosity galaxies at $z\lesssim0.2$ with larger impact parameters ($\langleρ\rangle = 222$ kpc). HST and FUSE UV spectro…
Stellar population astrophysics (SPA) with the TNG. Abundance analysis of nearby red giants and red clump stars: combining high resolution spectroscopy and asteroseismology
We present observations of the nearby spiral galaxy IC342 with the Herschel Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver (SPIRE) Fourier Transform Spectrometer. The spectral range afforded by SPIRE, 196-671 microns, allows us to access a number of 12CO lines from J=4--3 to J=13--12 with the highest J transitions observed for the first time. In addition we present measurements of 13CO, [CI] and [NII]. We use a radiative transfer code coupled with Bayesian likelihood analysis to model and constrain the temperature, density and column density of the gas. We find two 12CO components, one at 35 K and …
[abridged] We present optical integral field spectroscopy for a flux-limited sample of 19 QSOs at z<0.2 and spatially resolve their ionized gas properties at a physical resolution of 2-5kpc. The extended narrow line regions (ENLRs), photoionized by the radiation of AGN, have sizes of up to several kpc and correlate more strongly with the QSO continuum luminosity than with the integrated [OIII] luminosity. We find a relation of the form log(r)~(0.46+-0.04)log(L_5100), reinforcing the picture of an approximately constant ionization parameter for the ionized clouds across the ENLR. Besides the EN…

MAGIS (Measuring Abundances of red super Giants with Infrared Spectroscopy) project I. Establishment of an abundance analysis procedure for red supergiants and its evaluation with nearby stars
The 2020s are poised to continue the past two decades of significant advances based on observations of dwarf galaxies in the nearby universe. Upcoming wide-field photometric surveys will probe substantially deeper than previous data sets, pushing the discovery frontier for new dwarf galaxies to fainter magnitudes, lower surface brightnesses, and larger distances. These dwarfs will be compelling targets for testing models of galaxy formation and cosmology, including the properties of dark matter and possible modifications to gravity. However, most of the science that can be extracted from nearb…
The metallicity of diffuse ionised gas (DIG) cannot be determined using strong emission line diagnostics, which are calibrated to calculate the metallicity of Hii regions. Because of this, resolved metallicity maps from integral field spectroscopy (IFS) data remain largely incomplete. In this paper (the second of a series), we introduce the geostatistical technique of universal kriging, which allows the complete 2D metallicity distribution of a galaxy to be reconstructed from metallicities measured at Hii regions, accounting for spatial correlations between nearby data points. We apply this me…
High-performance instruments at large ground-based telescopes have made integral field spectroscopy (IFS) a powerful tool for the study of extended objects such as galaxies, nebulae, or even larger survey fields on the sky. Here we discuss the capabilities of IFS for the study of resolved stellar populations, using the new method of PSF-fitting crowded field IFS, analogous to the well-established technique of crowded field photometry with image sensors. We review early pioneering work with first generation integral field spectrographs, the breakthrough achieved with the MUSE instrument at the …
