Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) is a category of computer vision algorithms which attempts to recognize targets on data obtained from different sensors. ATR algorithms are extensively used in real-world scenarios such as military and surveillance applications. Existing ATR algorithms are developed for traditional closed-set methods where training and testing have the same class distribution. Thus, these algorithms have not been robust to unknown classes not seen during the training phase, limiting their utility in real-world applications. To this end, we propose an Open-set Automatic Target Recognition framework where we enable open-set recognition capability for ATR algorithms. In addition, we introduce a plugin Category-aware Binary Classifier (CBC) module to effectively tackle unknown classes seen during inference. The proposed CBC module can be easily integrated with any existing ATR algorithms and can be trained in an end-to-end manner. Experimental results show that the proposed approach outperforms many open-set methods on the DSIAC and CIFAR-10 datasets. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to address the open-set classification problem for ATR algorithms. Source code is available at: https://github.com/bardisafa/Open-set-ATR.
We present in this paper a biometric system of face detection and recognition in color images. The face detection technique is based on skin color information and fuzzy classification. A new algorithm is proposed in order to detect automatically face features (eyes, mouth and nose) and extract their correspondent geometrical points. These fiducial points are described by sets of wavelet components which are used for recognition. To achieve the face recognition, we use neural networks and we study its performances for different inputs. We compare the two types of features used for recognition: …

This paper is devoted to improve automatic emotion recognition from speech by incorporating rhythm and temporal features. Research on automatic emotion recognition so far has mostly been based on applying features like MFCCs, pitch and energy or intensity. The idea focuses on borrowing rhythm features from linguistic and phonetic analysis and applying them to the speech signal on the basis of acoustic knowledge only. In addition to this we exploit a set of temporal and loudness features. A segmentation unit is employed in starting to separate the voiced/unvoiced and silence parts and features …
Automatic Number Plate Recognition System (ANPRS) is a mass surveillance embedded system that recognizes the number plate of the vehicle. This system is generally used for traffic management applications. It should be very efficient in detecting the number plate in noisy as well as in low illumination and also within required time frame. This paper proposes a number plate recognition method by processing vehicle's rear or front image. After image is captured, processing is divided into four steps which are Pre-Processing, Number plate localization, Character segmentation and Character recognit…
In this paper, we propose an automatic and mechanized license and number plate recognition (LNPR) system which can extract the license plate number of the vehicles passing through a given location using image processing algorithms. No additional devices such as GPS or radio frequency identification (RFID) need to be installed for implementing the proposed system. Using special cameras, the system takes pictures from each passing vehicle and forwards the image to the computer for being processed by the LPR software. Plate recognition software uses different algorithms such as localization, orie…

The objective of this work is to automatically recognize faces from video sequences in a realistic, unconstrained setup in which illumination conditions are extreme and greatly changing, viewpoint and user motion pattern have a wide variability, and video input is of low quality. At the centre of focus are face appearance manifolds: this thesis presents a significant advance of their understanding and application in the sphere of face recognition. The two main contributions are the Generic Shape-Illumination Manifold recognition algorithm and the Anisotropic Manifold Space clustering. The Gene…

We designed a gangue sorting system, and built a convolutional neural network model based on AlexNet. Data enhancement and transfer learning are used to solve the problem which the convolution neural network has insufficient training data in the training stage. An object detection and region clipping algorithm is proposed to adjust the training image data to the optimum size. Compared with traditional neural network and SVM algorithm, this algorithm has higher recognition rate for coal and coal gangue, and provides important reference for identification and separation of coal and gangue.
This paper presents a novel automatic face recognition approach based on local binary patterns. This descriptor considers a local neighbourhood of a pixel to compute the feature vector values. This method is not very robust to handle image noise, variances and different illumination conditions. We address these issues by proposing a novel descriptor which considers more pixels and different neighbourhoods to compute the feature vector values. The proposed method is evaluated on two benchmark corpora, namely UFI and FERET face datasets. We experimentally show that our approach outperforms state…

The urine sediment analysis of particles in microscopic images can assist physicians in evaluating patients with renal and urinary tract diseases. Manual urine sediment examination is labor-intensive, subjective and time-consuming, and the traditional automatic algorithms often extract the hand-crafted features for recognition. Instead of using the hand-crafted features, in this paper, we exploit CNN to learn features in an end-to-end manner to recognize the urine particles. We treat the urine particles recognition as object detection and exploit two state-of-the-art CNN-based object detection…

Recognizing text in natural images is a challenging task with many unsolved problems. Different from those in documents, words in natural images often possess irregular shapes, which are caused by perspective distortion, curved character placement, etc. We propose RARE (Robust text recognizer with Automatic REctification), a recognition model that is robust to irregular text. RARE is a specially-designed deep neural network, which consists of a Spatial Transformer Network (STN) and a Sequence Recognition Network (SRN). In testing, an image is firstly rectified via a predicted Thin-Plate-Spline…
We propose an informed baseline to help disentangle the various contextual factors of influence in this type of case studies. For this purpose, we analysed the correlation between the given metadata and the self-assigned personality trait scores and developed a model based solely on this information. Further, we compared the performance of this informed baseline with models based on state-of-the-art visual, linguistic and audio features. For the present dataset, a model trained solely on simple metadata features (age, gender and number of sessions) proved to have superior or similar performanc…
In this paper, an approach to the problem of automatic facial feature extraction from a still frontal posed image and classification and recognition of facial expression and hence emotion and mood of a person is presented. Feed forward back propagation neural network is used as a classifier for classifying the expressions of supplied face into seven basic categories like surprise, neutral, sad, disgust, fear, happy and angry. For face portion segmentation and localization, morphological image processing operations are used. Permanent facial features like eyebrows, eyes, mouth and nose are extr…
Working with Child Sexual Exploitation Material (CSEM) in forensic applications might be benefited from the progress in automatic face recognition. However, discriminative parts of a face in CSEM, i.e., mostly the eyes, could be often occluded to difficult the victim's identification. Most of the face recognition approaches cannot deal with such kind of occlusions, resulting in inaccurate face recognition results. This document presents a short review face recognition methods for images with natural and eye occlude faces. The purpose is to select the best baseline approach for solving automati…
The capability to exploit multiple sources of information is of fundamental importance in a battlefield scenario. Information obtained from different sources, and separated in space and time, provide the opportunity to exploit diversities in order to mitigate uncertainty. For the specific challenge of Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) from radar platforms, both channel (e.g. polarization) and spatial diversity can provide useful information for such a specific and critical task. In this paper the use of pseudo-Zernike moments applied to multi-channel multi-pass data is presented exploiting di…

In this paper, we explore whether automatic face recognition can help in verifying widespread misinformation on social media, particularly conspiracy theories that are based on the existence of body doubles. The conspiracy theory addressed in this paper is the case of the Melania Trump body double. We employed four different state-of-the-art descriptors for face recognition to verify the integrity of the claim of the studied conspiracy theory. In addition, we assessed the impact of different image quality metrics on the variation of face recognition results. Two sets of image quality metrics w…

The effect of image quality degradation on the verification performance of automatic fingerprint recognition is investigated. We study the performance of two fingerprint matchers based on minutiae and ridge information under varying fingerprint image quality. The ridge-based system is found to be more robust to image quality degradation than the minutiae-based system for a number of different image quality criteria.
Although psychological research indicates that bodily expressions convey important affective information, to date research in emotion recognition focused mainly on facial expression or voice analysis. In this paper we present some experiments to automatically classify online handwritten text based on capital letters. Although handwritten text is not as discriminative as face or voice, we still found some chance for gender classification based on handwritten text. Accuracies are up to 74%, even in the most challenging case of capital letters.
High-resolution fingerprint recognition often relies on sophisticated matching algorithms based on hand-crafted keypoint descriptors, with pores being the most common keypoint choice. Our method is the opposite of the prevalent approach: we use instead a simple matching algorithm based on robust local pore descriptors that are learned from the data using a CNN. In order to train this CNN in a fully supervised manner, we describe how the automatic alignment of fingerprint images can be used to obtain the required training annotations, which are otherwise missing in all publicly available datase…
We evaluated a lightweight Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) called LPRNet [1] for automatic License Plate Recognition (LPR). We evaluated the algorithm on two datasets, one composed of real license plate images and the other of synthetic license plate images. In addition, we compared its performance against Tesseract [2], an Optical Character Recognition engine. We measured performance based on recognition accuracy and Levenshtein Distance. LPRNet is an end-to-end framework and demonstrated robust performance on both datasets, delivering 90 and 89 percent recognition accuracy on test sets of…
Radio frequency (RF) sensors are used alongside other sensing modalities to provide rich representations of the world. Given the high variability of complex-valued target responses, RF systems are susceptible to attacks masking true target characteristics from accurate identification. In this work, we evaluate different techniques for building robust classification architectures exploiting learned physical structure in received synthetic aperture radar signals of simulated 3D targets.

Spurred by this and given that Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) presents several advantages over its counterpart data domains, this paper surveys and assesses current SAR ATR architectures that employ the most popular dataset for the SAR domain, namely the Moving and Stationary Target Acquisition and Recognition (MSTAR) dataset. Based on the current methodology trends, we propose a taxonomy for the SAR ATR architectures, along wi…
To recognize an object in an image, the user must apply a combination of operators, where each operator has a set of parameters. These parameters must be well adjusted in order to reach good results. Usually, this adjustment is made manually by the user. In this paper we propose a new method to automate the process of parameter adjustment for an object recognition task. Our method is based on reinforcement learning, we use two types of agents: User Agent that gives the necessary information and Parameter Agent that adjusts the parameters of each operator. Due to the nature of reinforcement lea…

How to handle gender with machine learning is a controversial topic. A growing critical body of research brought attention to the numerous issues transgender communities face with the adoption of current automatic gender recognition (AGR) systems. In contrast, we explore how such technologies could potentially be appropriated to support transgender practices and needs, especially in non-Western contexts like Japan. We designed a virtual makeup probe to assist transgender individuals with passing, that is to be perceived as the gender they identify as. To understand how such an application migh…

In this paper, we propose a metric that we call the structured saliency benchmark (SSBM) to evaluate importance maps computed for automatic speech recognizers on individual utterances. These maps indicate time-frequency points of the utterance that are most important for correct recognition of a target word. Our evaluation technique is not only suitable for standard classification tasks, but is also appropriate for structured prediction tasks like sequence-to-sequence models. Additionally, we use this approach to perform a large scale comparison of the importance maps created by our previously…
Multi-task learning (MTL) involves the simultaneous training of two or more related tasks over shared representations. In this work, we apply MTL to audio-visual automatic speech recognition(AV-ASR). Our primary task is to learn a mapping between audio-visual fused features and frame labels obtained from acoustic GMM/HMM model. This is combined with an auxiliary task which maps visual features to frame labels obtained from a separate visual GMM/HMM model. The MTL model is tested at various levels of babble noise and the results are compared with a base-line hybrid DNN-HMM AV-ASR model. Our res…
