In order for a double-detonation model to be viable for normal type Ia supernovae, the adverse impact of helium-burning ash on early-time observables has to be avoided, which requires that the helium envelope mass should be at most 0.02 solar mass. Most of the previous studies introduced detonation by artificial hot spots, and therefore the robustness of the spontaneous helium detonation remains uncertain. In the present work, we conduct a self-consistent hydrodynamic study on the spontaneous ignition of the helium envelope in the context of the double-degenerate channel, by applying an idealized one-dimensional model and a simplified 7 isotope reaction network. We explore a wide range of the progenitor conditions, and demonstrate that the chance of direct initiation of detonation is limited. Especially, the spontaneous detonation requires the primary envelope mass of >~ 0.03 solar mass. Ignition as deflagration is instead far more likely, which is feasible for the lower envelope mass down to ~ 0.01 solar mass, which might lead to subsequent detonation once the deflagration to detonation transition (DDT) would be realized. High-resolution multi-dimensional simulations are required to further investigate the DDT possibility, as well as accurately derive the threshold between the spontaneous detonation and deflagration ignition regimes. Another interesting finding is the effect of the composition; while mixing with the core material enhances detonation as previously suggested, it rather narrows the chance for deflagration due to the slower rate of 12C(alpha,gamma)16O reaction at the lower temperature ~108K, with the caveat that we presently neglect the proton-catalyzed reaction sequence of 12C(p,gamma)13O(alpha,p)16O.
White dwarfs accreting from helium stars can stably burn at the accreted rate and avoid the challenge of mass loss associated with unstable Helium burning that is a concern for many Type Ia supernovae scenarios. We study binaries with helium stars of mass $1.25 M_\odot\le M_{\rm{He}} \le 1.8 M_\odot$, which have lost their hydrogen rich envelopes in an earlier common envelope event and now orbit with periods ($P_{\rm orb}$) of several hours with non-rotating $0.84$ and $1.0 M_\odot$ C/O WDs. The helium stars fill their Roche lobes (RLs) after exhaustion of central helium and donate helium on t…
In binary systems, the helium accretion onto carbon-oxygen (CO) white dwarfs (WDs) plays a vital role in many astrophysical scenarios, especially in supernovae type Ia. Moreover, ignition density for accretion rate $\dot{M} \lesssim 10^{-9} M_{\odot}$ $yr^{-1}$ in helium accreting CO white dwarfs decides the triggering mechanism of a supernova explosion which could be either off-centre helium flash or central carbon flash. We aim to study the accretion of helium with a slow accretion rate $5 \times 10^{-10} M_{\odot}$ $yr^{-1}$ onto relatively cool and hot white dwarfs of different abundances …
Helium Ignition on Accreting Neutron Stars with a New Triple-alpha Reaction Rate
Sub-Chandrasekhar CO white dwarfs accreting helium have been considered as candidates for Type Ia supernova(SNIa) progenitors since the early 1980s (helium shell mass $> 0.1 M_\odot $). These models, once detonated did not fit the observed spectra and light curve of typical SNIa observations. New theoretical work examined detonations on much less massive ($< 0.05 M_\odot $) envelopes. They find stable detonations that lead to light curves, spectra and abundances that compare relatively well with the observational data. The exact mechanism leading to the ignition of helium detonation is a key i…
Models for supernovae (SNe) arising from thermonuclear explosions of white dwarfs (WDs) have been extensively studied over the last few decades, mostly focusing on the single degenerate (accretion of material of a WD) and double degenerate (WD-WD merger) scenarios. In recent years it was suggested that WD-WD direct collisions provide an additional channel for such explosions. Here we extend the studies of such explosions, and explore the role of Helium-shells in affecting the thermonuclear explosions. We study both the impact of low-mass helium ($\sim0.01$ M$_{\odot})$ shells, as well as high …
The role of recombination during a common-envelope event has been long debated. Many studies have argued that much of hydrogen recombination energy, which is radiated in relatively cool and optically-thin layers, might not thermalise in the envelope. On the other hand, helium recombination contains 30% of the total recombination energy, and occurs much deeper in the stellar envelope. We investigate the distinct roles played by hydrogen and helium recombination in a common-envelope interaction experienced by a 12 solar mass red supergiant donor. We perform adiabatic, 3D hydrodynamical simulatio…
Detonations in helium-rich envelopes surrounding white dwarfs have garnered attention as triggers of faint thermonuclear ".Ia" supernovae and double detonation Type Ia supernovae. However, recent studies have found that the minimum size of a hotspot that can lead to a helium detonation is comparable to, or even larger than, the white dwarf's pressure scale height, casting doubt on the successful ignition of helium detonations in these systems. In this paper, we examine the previously neglected effects of C/O pollution and a full nuclear reaction network, and we consider hotspots with spatially…
An attractive scenario for producing Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) is a double detonation, where detonation of an accreted helium layer triggers ignition of a C/O core. Whether or not such a mechanism can explain some or most SNe Ia depends on the properties of the helium burning, which in turn is set by the composition of the surface material. Using a combination of semi-analytic and simple numerical models, I explore when turbulent mixing due to hydrodynamic instabilities during the accretion process can mix C/O core material up into the accreted helium. Mixing is strongest at high accretion r…
Collisions of white dwarfs (WDs) have recently been invoked as a possible mechanism for type Ia supernovae (SNIa). A pivotal feature for the viability of WD collisions as SNIa progenitors is that a significant fraction of the mass is highly compressed to the densities required for efficient $^{56}$Ni production before the ignition of the detonation wave. Previous studies have predominantly employed model WDs composed entirely of carbon-oxygen (CO), whereas WDs are expected to have a non-negligible helium envelope. Given that helium is more susceptible to explosive burning than CO under the con…
Using simple arguments based on photometric light curves and velocity evolution, we propose that some stripped envelope supernovae (SNe) show signs that a significant fraction of their helium is effectively transparent. The main pieces of evidence are the relatively low velocities with little velocity evolution, as are expected deep inside an exploding star, along with temperatures that are too low to ionize helium. This means that the helium should not contribute to the shaping of the main SN light curve, and thus the total helium mass may be difficult to measure from simple light curve model…

Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) are likely the thermonuclear explosions of carbon-oxygen (CO) white-dwarf (WD) stars, but their progenitor systems remain elusive. Recently, Sharon & Kushnir (2022) used The Zwicky Transient Facility Bright Transient Survey to construct a synthesized $^{56}$Ni mass, $M_\text{Ni56}$, distribution of SNe Ia. They found that the rate of low-luminosity ($M_\text{Ni56}\approx0.15\,M_{\odot}$) SNe Ia is lower by a factor of $\sim10$ than the more common $M_\text{Ni56}\approx0.7\,M_{\odot}$ events. We here show that in order for the double-detonation model (DDM, in which a…
We present a numerical parameter survey of sub-Chandrasekhar mass white dwarf (WD) explosions. Carbon-oxygen WDs accreting a helium shell have the potential to explode in the sub-Chandrasekhar mass regime. Previous studies have shown how the ignition of a helium shell can either directly ignite the WD at the core-shell interface or propagate a shock wave into the the core causing a central ignition. We examine the explosions of WDs from 0.6 - 1.2 M$_\odot$ with helium shells of 0.01, 0.05 and 0.08 M$_\odot$. Distinct observational signatures of sub-Chandrasekhar mass WD explosions are predicte…
Many core collapse supernovae (SNe) with hydrogen-poor and low-mass ejecta, such as ultra-stripped SNe and type Ibn SNe, are observed to interact with dense circumstellar material (CSM). These events likely arise from the core-collapse of helium stars which have been heavily stripped by a binary companion and ejected significant mass during the last weeks to years of their lives. In helium star models run to days before core-collapse, we identify a range of helium core masses $\approx 2.5 -3 M_{\odot}$ whose envelopes expand substantially due to helium shell burning while the core undergoes ne…
We argue that the core degenerate (CD) scenario of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) can explain the compact helium-rich circumstellar material (CSM) of SN 2020eyj. In the new channel of the CD scenario that we propose there are two major common envelope evolution (CEE) phases. After the white dwarf (WD) companion removes the hydrogen-rich envelope of the asymptotic giant branch star its spiralling-in halts at few solar radii from the core, rather than continuing to the carbon-oxygen (CO) core as in the hydrogen-rich SNe Ia-CSM CD scenario. Only hundreds to tens of thousands of years later, after th…
The energy budget in common-envelope events (CEEs) is not well understood, with substantial uncertainty even over to what extent the recombination energy stored in ionised hydrogen and helium might be used to help envelope ejection. We investigate the reaction of a red-giant envelope to heating which mimics limiting cases of energy input provided by the orbital decay of a binary during a CEE, specifically during the post-plunge-in phase during which the spiral-in has been argued to occur on a time-scale longer than dynamical. We show that the outcome of such a CEE depends less on the total amo…
We study the evolution and final outcome of long-lived (${\approx}10^5$ years) remnants from the merger of a He white dwarf (WD) with a more massive C/O or O/Ne WD. Using Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics ($\texttt{MESA}$), we show that these remnants have a red giant configuration supported by steady helium burning, adding mass to the WD core until it reaches $M_{\rm core}\approx 1.12-1.20 M_\odot$. At that point, the base of the surface convection zone extends into the burning layer, mixing the helium burning products (primarily carbon and magnesium) throughout the convective e…
We present a method for modeling the evolution of detached double white dwarf (DWD) binaries hosting helium donors from the end of the common envelope (CE) phase to the onset of Roche Lobe overflow (RLOF). This is achieved by combining detailed stellar evolution calculations of extremely low mass (ELM) helium WDs possessing hydrogen envelopes with the the orbital shrinking of the binary driven by gravitational radiation. We show that the consideration of hydrogen fusion in these systems is crucial, as a significant fraction ($\approx$50%) of future donors are expected to still be burning when …
We present observations of ZTF18abfcmjw (SN2019dge), a helium-rich supernova with a fast-evolving light curve indicating an extremely low ejecta mass ($\approx 0.3\,M_\odot$) and low kinetic energy ($\approx 1.2\times 10^{50}\,{\rm erg}$). Early-time (<4 d after explosion) photometry reveal evidence of shock cooling from an extended helium-rich envelope of $\sim0.1\,M_\odot$ located at $\sim 3\times 10^{12}\,{\rm cm}$ from the progenitor. Early-time He II line emission and subsequent spectra show signatures of interaction with helium-rich circumstellar material, which extends from $\gtrsim 5\t…
We study the violent phase of the merger of massive binary white dwarf systems. Our aim is to characterize the conditions for explosive burning to occur, and identify a possible explosion mechanism of Type Ia supernovae. The primary components of our model systems are carbon-oxygen (C/O) white dwarfs, while the secondaries are made either of C/O or of pure helium. We account for tidal effects in the initial conditions in a self-consistent way, and consider initially well-separated systems with slow inspiral rates. We study the merger evolution using an adaptive mesh refinement, reactive, Euler…
In the past, SDSS J160429.12+100002.2 was spectroscopically classified as a blue horizontal branch (BHB) star. Assuming a luminosity that is characteristic of BHB stars, the object's radial velocity and proper motions from Gaia Early Data Release 3 would imply that its Galactic rest-frame velocity exceeds its local escape velocity. Consequently, the object would be considered a hypervelocity star, which would prove particularly interesting because its Galactic trajectory points in our direction. However, based on the spectroscopic analysis of follow-up observations, we show that the object is …
We perform smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations for merging binary carbon-oxygen (CO) white dwarfs (WDs) with masses of $1.1$ and $1.0$ $M_\odot$, until the merger remnant reaches a dynamically steady state. Using these results, we assess whether the binary could induce a thermonuclear explosion, and whether the explosion could be observed as a type Ia supernova (SN Ia). We investigate three explosion mechanisms: a helium-ignition following the dynamical merger (`helium-ignited violent merger model'), a carbon-ignition (`carbon-ignited violent merger model'), and an explosion foll…
We present the early-phase spectra and the light curves of the broad-lined supernova (SN) 2016coi from $t=7$ to $67$ days after the estimated explosion date. This SN was initially reported as a broad-lined Type SN Ic (SN Ic-BL). However, we found that spectra up to $t=12$ days exhibited the He~{\sc i} $λ$5876, $λ$6678, and $λ$7065 absorption lines. We show that the smoothed and blueshifted spectra of normal SNe Ib are remarkably similar to the observed spectrum of SN 2016coi. The line velocities of SN 2016coi were similar to those of SNe Ic-BL and significantly faster than those of SNe Ib. Ana…
We present an analysis of 507 spectra of 173 stripped-envelope (SE) supernovae (SNe) discovered by the untargeted Palomar Transient Factory (PTF) and intermediate PTF (iPTF) surveys. Our sample contains 55 Type IIb SNe (SNe IIb), 45 Type Ib SNe (SNe Ib), 56 Type Ic SNe (SNe Ic), and 17 Type Ib/c SNe (SNe Ib/c). We compare the SE SN subtypes via measurements of the pseudo-equivalent widths (pEWs) and velocities of the He I $λ\lambda5876, 7065$ and O I $\lambda7774$ absorption lines. Consistent with previous work, we find that SNe Ic show higher pEWs and velocities in O I $\lambda7774$ compared …
When nuclear fuel in the core of a massive star with a zero-age main-sequence mass $M_{\rm ZAMS} \gtrsim 8M_\odot$ is exhausted, the central part of the iron or magnesium core collapses and forms a neutron star or a black hole. At the same time, the material above the collapsing core is rapidly ejected, leading to a stripped-envelope supernova (SESN) explosion if the outer hydrogen envelope of the star was removed before its explosion. The envelope is presumably stripped either via strong stellar winds or due to mass transfer to a companion star in a close binary orbit. It is not clear which p…
Quasi-periodic eruptions (QPEs), which are a new kind of X-ray bursts with a recurrence time of several hours, have been detected from supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in galactic nuclei. Recently, the two QPEs discovered by the \textit{eROSITA} show asymmetric light curves with a fast rise and a slow decline. Current models cannot explain the observational characteristics of QPEs. Here we show that QPEs can be generated from the Roche lobe overflows at each periapsis passage of an evolved star orbiting an SMBH. The properties of the companion stars are constrained via analytic estimations. We…
