This paper focuses on the task of survival time analysis for lung cancer. Although much progress has been made in this problem in recent years, the performance of existing methods is still far from satisfactory. Traditional and some deep learning-based survival time analyses for lung cancer are mostly based on textual clinical information such as staging, age, histology, etc. Unlike existing methods that predicting on the single modality, we observe that a human clinician usually takes multimodal data such as text clinical data and visual scans to estimate survival time. Motivated by this, in this work, we contribute a smart cross-modality network for survival analysis network named Lite-ProSENet that simulates a human's manner of decision making. Extensive experiments were conducted using data from 422 NSCLC patients from The Cancer Imaging Archive (TCIA). The results show that our Lite-ProSENet outperforms favorably again all comparison methods and achieves the new state of the art with the 89.3% on concordance. The code will be made publicly available.

With the development of computer technology, various models have emerged in artificial intelligence. The transformer model has been applied to the field of computer vision (CV) after its success in natural language processing (NLP). Radiologists continue to face multiple challenges in today's rapidly evolving medical field, such as increased workload and increased diagnostic demands. Although there are some conventional methods for lung cancer detection before, their accuracy still needs to be improved, especially in realistic diagnostic scenarios. This paper creatively proposes a segmentation…
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. Lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) and lung squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC) are the most common histologic subtypes of non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Histology is an essential tool for lung cancer diagnosis. Pathologists make classifications according to the dominant subtypes. Although morphology remains the standard for diagnosis, significant tool needs to be developed to elucidate the diagnosis. In our study, we utilize the pre-trained Vision Transformer (ViT) model to classify multiple label lung cancer on histologic slices (fr…

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the past several years. A major challenge in lung cancer screening is the detection of lung nodules from computed tomography (CT) scans. State-of-the-art approaches in automated lung nodule classification use deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs). However, these networks require a large number of training samples to generalize well. This paper investigates the use of capsule networks (CapsNets) as an alternative to CNNs. We show that CapsNets significantly outperforms CNNs when the number of training samples is small. To increase…

Lung cancer is the leading cause of death among different types of cancers. Every year, the lives lost due to lung cancer exceed those lost to pancreatic, breast, and prostate cancer combined. The survival rate for lung cancer patients is very low compared to other cancer patients due to late diagnostics. Thus, early lung cancer diagnostics is crucial for patients to receive early treatments, increasing the survival rate or even becoming cancer-free. This paper proposed a deep-learning model for early lung cancer prediction and diagnosis from Computed Tomography (CT) scans. The proposed mode a…

Morphological attributes from histopathological images and molecular profiles from genomic data are important information to drive diagnosis, prognosis, and therapy of cancers. By integrating these heterogeneous but complementary data, many multi-modal methods are proposed to study the complex mechanisms of cancers, and most of them achieve comparable or better results from previous single-modal methods. However, these multi-modal methods are restricted to a single task (e.g., survival analysis or grade classification), and thus neglect the correlation between different tasks. In this study, w…
With an estimated 160,000 deaths in 2018, lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer death in the United States. Lung cancer CT screening has been shown to reduce mortality by up to 40% and is now included in US screening guidelines. Reducing the high error rates in lung cancer screening is imperative because of the high clinical and financial costs caused by diagnosis mistakes. Despite the use of standards for radiological diagnosis, persistent inter-grader variability and incomplete characterization of comprehensive imaging findings remain as limitations of current methods. These limitat…

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death and morbidity worldwide. Many studies have shown machine learning models to be effective at detecting lung nodules from chest X-ray images. However, these techniques have yet to be embraced by the medical community due to several practical, ethical, and regulatory constraints stemming from the black-box nature of deep learning models. Additionally, most lung nodules visible on chest X-ray are benign; therefore, the narrow task of computer vision-based lung nodule detection cannot be equated to automated lung cancer detection. Addressing both con…

Annual low dose computed tomography (CT) lung screening is currently advised for individuals at high risk of lung cancer (e.g., heavy smokers between 55 and 80 years old). The recommended screening practice significantly reduces all-cause mortality, but the vast majority of screening results are negative for cancer. If patients at very low risk could be identified based on individualized, image-based biomarkers, the health care resources could be more efficiently allocated to higher risk patients and reduce overall exposure to ionizing radiation. In this work, we propose a multi-task (diagnosi…

The approach starts with the classification of lung lesions from the set of primary and metastatic lesions at various anatomic locations. Focusing on the lung lesions, we perform automatic segmentation to extract their 3D volumes. Radiomic features are then extracted from the lesion on the pre-treatment scan and the first follow-up scan to predict which lesions will shrink at least 30% in diamet…

Functional behavior of breast cancer - representing underlying biology - can be analyzed using MRI. The most widely used breast MR imaging protocol is dynamic contrast-enhanced T1-weighted imaging. The cancer enhances on dynamic contrast-enhanced MR imaging because the contrast agent leaks from the leaky vessels into the interstitial space. The contrast agent subsequently leaks back into the vascular space, creating a washout effect. The normal parenchymal tissue of the breast can also enhance after contrast injection. This enhancement generally increases over time. Typically, a radiologist as…
