The manual ground truth of abdominal multi-organ is labor-intensive. In order to make full use of CT data, we developed a semi-supervised learning based dual-light UNet. In the training phase, it consists of two light UNets, which make full use of label and unlabeled data simultaneously by using consistent-based learning. Moreover, separable convolution and residual concatenation was introduced light UNet to reduce the computational cost. Further, a robust segmentation loss was applied to improve the performance. In the inference phase, only a light UNet is used, which required low time cost and less GPU memory utilization. The average DSC of this method in the validation set is 0.8718. The code is available in https://github.com/laihaoran/Semi-SupervisednnUNet.
As an essential prerequisite for developing a medical intelligent assistant system, medical image segmentation has received extensive research and concentration from the neural network community. A series of UNet-like networks with encoder-decoder architecture has achieved extraordinary success, in which UNet2+ and UNet3+ redesign skip connections, respectively proposing dense skip connection and full-scale skip connection and dramatically improving compared with UNet in medical image segmentation. However, UNet2+ lacks sufficient information explored from the full scale, which will affect the…
Although convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are promoting the development of medical image semantic segmentation, the standard model still has some shortcomings. First, the feature mapping from the encoder and decoder sub-networks in the skip connection operation has a large semantic difference. Second, the remote feature dependence is not effectively modeled. Third, the global context information of different scales is ignored. In this paper, we try to eliminate semantic ambiguity in skip connection operations by adding attention gates (AGs), and use attention mechanisms to combine local fe…

Medical image segmentation have drawn massive attention as it is important in biomedical image analysis. Good segmentation results can assist doctors with their judgement and further improve patients' experience. Among many available pipelines in medical image analysis, Unet is one of the most popular neural networks as it keeps raw features by adding concatenation between encoder and decoder, which makes it still widely used in industrial field. In the mean time, as a popular model which dominates natural language process tasks, transformer is now introduced to computer vision tasks and have …

Deep convolutional neural network (CNN) achieves remarkable performance for medical image analysis. UNet is the primary source in the performance of 3D CNN architectures for medical imaging tasks, including brain tumor segmentation. The skip connection in the UNet architecture concatenates features from both encoder and decoder paths to extract multi-contextual information from image data. The multi-scaled features play an essential role in brain tumor segmentation. However, the limited use of features can degrade the performance of the UNet approach for segmentation. In this paper, we propose…

Convolutional neural network (CNN), in particular the Unet, is a powerful method for medical image segmentation. To date Unet has demonstrated state-of-art performance in many complex medical image segmentation tasks, especially under the condition when the training and testing data share the same distribution (i.e. come from the same source domain). However, in clinical practice, medical images are acquired from different vendors and centers. The performance of a U-Net trained from a particular source domain, when transferred to a different target domain (e.g. different vendor, acquisition pa…

Real-time cine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) plays an increasingly important role in various cardiac interventions. In order to enable fast and accurate visual assistance, the temporal frames need to be segmented on-the-fly. However, state-of-the-art MRI segmentation methods are used either offline because of their high computation complexity, or in real-time but with significant accuracy loss and latency increase (causing visually noticeable lag). As such, they can hardly be adopted to assist visual guidance. In this work, inspired by a new interpretation of Independent Component Analysis …

Recent medical image segmentation models are mostly hybrid, which integrate self-attention and convolution layers into the non-isomorphic architecture. However, one potential drawback of these approaches is that they failed to provide an intuitive explanation of why this hybrid combination manner is beneficial, making it difficult for subsequent work to make improvements on top of them. To address this issue, we first analyze the differences between the weight allocation mechanisms of the self-attention and convolution. Based on this analysis, we propose to construct a parallel non-isomorphic …

Liver tumor segmentation in CT images is a critical step in the diagnosis, surgical planning and postoperative evaluation of liver disease. An automatic liver and tumor segmentation method can greatly relieve physicians of the heavy workload of examining CT images and better improve the accuracy of diagnosis. In the last few decades, many modifications based on U-Net model have been proposed in the literature. However, there are relatively few improvements for the advanced UNet++ model. In our paper, we propose an encoding feature supervised UNet++(ES-UNet++) and apply it to the liver and tumo…

Deep learning algorithms are preferable for rectal tumor segmentation. However, it is still a challenge task to accurately segment and identify the locations and sizes of rectal tumors by using deep learning methods. To increase the capability of extracting enough feature information for rectal tumor segmentation, we propose a Covariance Self-Attention Dual Path UNet (CSA-DPUNet). The proposed network mainly includes two improvements on UNet: 1) modify UNet that has only one path structure to consist of two contracting path and two expansive paths (nam new network as DPUNet), which can help ex…

In the past few years, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have achieved milestones in medical image analysis. Especially, the deep neural networks based on U-shaped architecture and skip-connections have been widely applied in a variety of medical image tasks. However, although CNN has achieved excellent performance, it cannot learn global and long-range semantic information interaction well due to the locality of the convolution operation. In this paper, we propose Swin-Unet, which is an Unet-like pure Transformer for medical image segmentation. The tokenized image patches are fed into the …

UNet has become the gold standard method for segmenting 2D medical images that any new method must be validated against. However, in recent years, several variations of the seminal UNet have been proposed with promising results. However, there is no clear consensus on the generalisability of these architectures, and UNet currently remains the methodological gold standard. The purpose of this study was to evaluate some of the most promising UNet-inspired architectures for 3D segmentation. For the segmentation of 3D scans, UNet-inspired methods are also dominant, but there is a larger variety ac…

Recently, many attempts have been made to construct a transformer base U-shaped architecture, and new methods have been proposed that outperformed CNN-based rivals. However, serious problems such as blockiness and cropped edges in predicted masks remain because of transformers' patch partitioning operations. In this work, we propose a new U-shaped architecture for medical image segmentation with the help of the newly introduced focal modulation mechanism. The proposed architecture has asymmetric depths for the encoder and decoder. Due to the ability of the focal module to aggregate local and g…

The precise segmentation of retinal blood vessels is of great significance for early diagnosis of eye-related diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. In this work, we propose a lightweight network named Spatial Attention U-Net (SA-UNet) that does not require thousands of annotated training samples and can be utilized in a data augmentation manner to use the available annotated samples more efficiently. SA-UNet introduces a spatial attention module which infers the attention map along the spatial dimension, and multiplies the attention map by the input feature map for adaptive feature refin…

Recently, a growing interest has been seen in deep learning-based semantic segmentation. UNet, which is one of deep learning networks with an encoder-decoder architecture, is widely used in medical image segmentation. Combining multi-scale features is one of important factors for accurate segmentation. UNet++ was developed as a modified Unet by designing an architecture with nested and dense skip connections. However, it does not explore sufficient information from full scales and there is still a large room for improvement. In this paper, we propose a novel UNet 3+, which takes advantage of f…

We present an end-to-end deep learning segmentation method by combining a 3D UNet architecture with a graph neural network (GNN) model. In this approach, the convolutional layers at the deepest level of the UNet are replaced by a GNN-based module with a series of graph convolutions. The dense feature maps at this level are transformed into a graph input to the GNN module. The incorporation of graph convolutions in the UNet provides nodes in the graph with information that is based on node connectivity, in addition to the local features learnt through the downsampled paths. This information can…
Recently, Visual Transformer (ViT) has been widely used in various fields of computer vision due to applying self-attention mechanism in the spatial domain to modeling global knowledge. Especially in medical image segmentation (MIS), many works are devoted to combining ViT and CNN, and even some works directly utilize pure ViT-based models. However, recent works improved models in the aspect of spatial domain while ignoring the importance of frequency domain information. Therefore, we propose Multi-axis External Weights UNet (MEW-UNet) for MIS based on the U-shape architecture by replacing sel…

Numerous vessel segmentation methods have been proposed recently, however more research is needed to deal with poor segmentation of thin and tiny vessels. To address this, we propose a new deep learning pipeline combining the efficiency of residual dense net blocks and, residual squeeze and excitation blocks. We validate experimentally our approach on three datasets and show that our pipeline outperforms curr…

Bidirectional LSTM is responsible to explore the relationships between the encoded features and the up-sampled features in the encoding and decoding paths. Meanwhile, we introduce attention gates (AG) into DenseUNet to diminish responses of unrelated background regions and magnify responses of salient…
