We propose an algorithm for schema-based determinization of finite automata on words and of step-wise hedge automata on nested words. The idea is to integrate schema-based cleaning directly into automata determinization. We prove the correctness of our new algorithm and show that it is alway smore efficient than standard determinization followed by schema-based cleaning. Our implementation permits to obtain a small deterministic automaton for an example of an XPath query, where standard determinization yields a huge stepwise hedge automaton for which schema-based cleaning runs out of memory.
We study the problem of determinizing $ω$-automata whose acceptance condition is defined on the transitions using Boolean formulas, also known as transition-based Emerson-Lei automata (TELA). The standard approach to determinize TELA first constructs an equivalent generalized Büchi automaton (GBA), which is later determinized. We introduce three new ways of translating TELA to GBA. Furthermore, we give a new determinization construction which determinizes several GBA separately and combines them using a product construction. An experimental evaluation shows that the product approach is competi…
In this work, we present multiple new optimizations and heuristics for the determinization of Büchi automata that exploit a number of semantic and structural properties, most of which may be applied together with any determinization procedure. We built a prototype implementation where all the presented heuristics can be freely combined and evaluated them, comparing our implementation with the state-of-the-art tool spot on multiple data sets with different characteristics. Our results show that the proposed optimizations and heuristics can in some cases significantly decrease the size of the re…
In this paper we combine determinization and state reduction methods into two-in-one algorithms that simultaneously perform determinization and state reduction. These algorithms perform better than all previous determinization algorithms for fuzzy finite automata, developed by Belohlavek [Inform Sciences 143 (2002) 205-209], Li and Pedrycz [Fuzzy Set Syst 156 (2005) 68-92], Ignjatović et al. [Inform Sciences 178 (2008) 164-180], and Jančić et al. [Inform Sciences 181 (2011) 1358-1368], in the sense that they produce smaller automata, while require the same computation time. The only exception …
Deterministic timed automata are strictly less expressive than their non-deterministic counterparts, which are again less expressive than those with silent transitions. As a consequence, timed automata are in general non-determinizable. This is unfortunate since deterministic automata play a major role in model-based testing, observability and implementability. However, by bounding the length of the traces in the automaton, effective determinization becomes possible. We propose a novel procedure for bounded determinization of timed automata. The procedure unfolds the automata to bounded trees,…
Determinization of Büchi automata is a long-known difficult problem and after the seminal result of Safra, who developed the first asymptotically optimal construction from Büchi into Rabin automata, much work went into improving, simplifying or avoiding Safra's construction. A different, less known determinization construction was derived by Muller and Schupp and appears to be unrelated to Safra's construction on the first sight. In this paper we propose a new meta-construction from nondeterministic Büchi to deterministic parity automata which strictly subsumes both the construction of Safra a…
Input-driven pushdown automata (also known as visibly pushdown automata and as nested word automata) are a subclass of deterministic pushdown automata and a superclass of the parenthesis languages. Nguyen and Ogawa ("Event-clock visibly pushdown automata", SOFSEM 2009) defined a timed extension of these automata under the event-clock model, and showed that this model can be determinized using the method of region construction. This paper defines a further extension of this model with the event clock on the call-return operations, and proposes a new, direct determinization procedure for these a…
Determinization of fuzzy finite automata is understood here as a procedure of their conversion into equivalent crisp-deterministic fuzzy automata, which can be viewed as being deterministic with possibly infinitely many states, but with fuzzy sets of terminal states. Particularly significant determinization methods are those that provide a minimal crisp-deterministic fuzzy automaton equivalent to the original fuzzy finite automaton, called canonization methods. One canonization method for fuzzy finite automata, the Brzozowski type determinization, has been developed recently by Jančić and Ćiri…
The determinization of a nondeterministic Büchi automaton (NBA) is a fundamental construction of automata theory, with applications to probabilistic verification and reactive synthesis. The standard determinization constructions, such as the ones based on the Safra-Piterman's approach, work on the whole NBA. In this work we propose a divide-and-conquer determinization approach. To this end, we first classify the strongly connected components (SCCs) of the given NBA as inherently weak, deterministic accepting, and nondeterministic accepting. We then present how to determinize each type of SCC i…
Optimal determinization construction of Streett automata is an important research problem because it is indispensable in numerous applications such as decision problems for tree temporal logics, logic games and system synthesis. This paper presents a transformation from nondeterministic Streett automata (NSA) with $n$ states and $k$ Streett pairs to equivalent deterministic Rabin transition automata (DRTA) with $n^{5n}(n!)^{n}$ states, $O(n^{n^2})$ Rabin pairs for $k=ω(n)$ and $n^{5n}k^{nk}$ states, $O(k^{nk})$ Rabin pairs for $k=O(n)$. This improves the state of the art Streett determinizatio…
Decidability of the determinization problem for weighted automata over the semiring $(\mathbb{Z} \cup {-\infty}, \max, +)$, WA for short, is a long-standing open question. We propose two ways of approaching it by constraining the search space of deterministic WA: k-delay and r-regret. A WA N is k-delay determinizable if there exists a deterministic automaton D that defines the same function as N and for all words α in the language of N, the accepting run of D on α is always at most k-away from a maximal accepting run of N on α. That is, along all prefixes of the same length, the absolute diffe…
One-Counter Nets (OCNs) are finite-state automata equipped with a counter that is not allowed to become negative, but does not have zero tests. Their simplicity and close connection to various other models (e.g., VASS, Counter Machines and Pushdown Automata) make them an attractive model for studying the border of decidability for the classical decision problems. The deterministic fragment of OCNs (DOCNs) typically admits more tractable decision problems, and while these problems and the expressive power of DOCNs have been studied, the determinization problem, namely deciding whether an OCN ad…
We present a new algorithm to construct a deterministic Rabin automaton for an LTL formula $φ$. The automaton is the product of a master automaton and an array of slave automata, one for each $G$-subformula of $φ$. The slave automaton for $Gψ$ is in charge of recognizing whether $FGψ$ holds. As opposed to standard determinization procedures, the states of all our automata have a clear logical structure, which allows to apply various optimizations. Our construction subsumes former algorithms for fragments of LTL. Experimental results show improvement in the sizes of the resulting automata compa…
We introduce flat automata for automatic generation of tokenizers. Flat automata are a simple representation of standard finite automata. Using the flat representation, automata can be easily constructed, combined and printed. Due to the use of border functions, flat automata are more compact than standard automata in the case where intervals of characters are attached to transitions, and the standard algorithms on automata are simpler. We give the standard algorithms for tokenizer construction with automata, namely construction using regular operations, determinization, and minimization. We p…

In this document, we propose a description, via a Haskell implementation, of a generalization of the notion of regular expression allowing us to group the definitions and the methods of (tree or word) automata constructions over one generic structure, based on enriched category theory tools. We first recall several methods of conversion from expressions to automata, enlightening the similarities between the words and trees cases. We then produce an original study of the power of enriched category theory applied 1) to automata and expressions implementation, and 2) to the study of associated al…
Complementation of nondeterministic Büchi automata (BAs) is an important problem in automata theory with numerous applications in formal verification, such as termination analysis of programs, model checking, or in decision procedures of some logics. We build on ideas from a recent work on BA determinization by Li et al. and propose a new modular algorithm for BA complementation. Our algorithm allows to combine several BA complementation procedures together, with one procedure for a subset of the BA's strongly connected components (SCCs). In this way, one can exploit the structure of particula…
