We give a pedagogical introduction to dynamical invariant formalism of shortcuts to adiabaticity. For a given operator form of the Hamiltonian with undetermined coefficients, the dynamical invariant is introduced to design the coefficients. We discuss how the method allows us to realize adiabatic dynamics and describe a relation to the counterdiabatic formalism. The equation for the dynamical invariant takes a familiar form and is often used in various fields of physics. We introduce examples of Lax pair, quantum brachistochrone, and flow equation.
Pedagogical introduction to counterdiabatic formalism of shortcuts to adiabaticity is given so that the readers are accessible to some of more specialized articles in the rest of this theme issue without a much barrier. A guide to references is given so that this article also serves as a mini-review.
Different techniques to speed up quantum adiabatic processes are currently being explored for applications in atomic, molecular and optical physics, such as transport, cooling and expansions, wavepacket splitting, or internal state control. Here we examine the capabilities of superadiabatic iterations to produce a sequence of shortcuts to adiabaticity. The general formalism is worked out as well as examples for population inversion in a two-level system.
Shortcuts to adiabaticity are alternative fast processes that reproduce the same final populations, or even the same final state, as the adiabatic process in a finite, shorter time. Many of the existing approaches to design shortcuts, and even new ones have been used throughout this Thesis in the double well potential. These techniques have allowed us to obtain a great benefit in processes as varied as matter-wave splitting, multiplexing/ demultiplexing, beam splitters, cotunneling, population inversion, waveguide optimization, Tonks-Girardeau gas manipulation and bias inversion.
A non-Hermitian shortcut to adiabaticity is introduced. By adding an imaginary term in the diagonal elements of the Hamiltonian of a two state quantum system, we show how one can cancel the nonadiabatic losses and perform an arbitrarily fast population transfer, without the need to increase the coupling. We apply this technique to two popular level-crossing models: the Landau-Zener model and the Allen-Eberly model.
In fast forward quantum shortcuts to adiabaticity, a designed potential $U_{FF}(q,t)$ steers a wavefunction to evolve from the $n$'th eigenstate of an initial Hamiltonian $\hat H(0)$ to the $n$'th eigenstate of a final Hamiltonian $\hat H(τ)$, in finite time $τ$. Previously proposed strategies for constructing $U_{FF}$ are (in the absence of special symmetries) limited to the ground state, $n=0$. We discuss applications of shortcuts to adiabaticity (STA) to adiabatic quantum computation. After reviewing the fundamental properties and the present status of STA from the author's personal point of view, we apply the method to the adiabatic algorithm of the Grover's problem. We discuss two possible implementations of STA for the adiabatic quantum computations: the method of quantum adiabatic brachistochrone and the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant-based inverse engineering.

We study the Ising Hamiltonian with a transverse field term to simulate the quantum annealing. Using shortcuts to adiabaticity, we design the time dependence of the Hamiltonian. The dynamical invariant is obtained by the mean-field ansatz, and the Hamiltonian is designed by the inverse engineering. We show that the time dependence of physical quantities such as the magnetization is independent of the speed of the Hamiltonian variation in the infinite-range model. We also show that rotating transverse magnetic fields are useful to achieve the ideal time evolution.
Sped-up protocols (shortcuts to adiabaticity) that drive a system quickly to the same populations than a slow adiabatic process may involve Hamiltonian terms difficult to realize in practice. We use the dynamical symmetry of the Hamiltonian to find, by means of Lie transforms, alternative Hamiltonians that achieve the same goals without the problematic terms. We apply this technique to three-level systems (two interacting bosons in a double well, and beam splitters with two and three output channels) driven by Hamiltonians that belong to the four-dimensional algebra U3S3.
Envariance is a symmetry exhibited by correlated quantum systems. Inspired by this "quantum fact of life," we propose a novel method for shortcuts to adiabaticity which enables the system to evolve through the adiabatic manifold at all times, solely by controlling the environment. As main results, we construct the unique form of the driving on the environment that enables such dynamics, for a family of composite states of arbitrary dimension. We compare the cost of this environment-assisted technique with that of counterdiabatic driving, and we illustrate our results for a two-qubit model.

We find the noise sensitivities (i.e., the quadratic terms of the energy with respect to the perturbation of the noise) of a particle shuttled by an optical lattice that moves according to a shortcut-to-adiabaticity transport protocol. Noises affecting different optical lattice parameters, trap depth, position, and lattice periodicity, are considered. We find generic expressions of the sensitivities for arbitrary noise spectra but focus on the white-noise limit as a basic reference, and on Ornstein-Uhlenbeck noise to account for the effect of non-zero correlation times.

We propose how to engineer the longitudinal coupling to accelerate the measurement of a qubit longitudinally coupled to a cavity, motivated by the concept of shortcuts to adiabaticity. Different modulations are inversely designed from two methods of inverse engineering and counter-diabatic driving, for achieving larger values of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at nanosecond scale. We show that the quantum Fisher information attained in an adiabatic approach to critical quantum metrology cannot lead to the Heisenberg limit of precision and therefore regular quantum metrology under optimal settings is always superior. We engineer the fast rotation of a quantum particle confined in an effectively one-dimensional, harmonic trap, for a predetermined rotation angle and time, avoiding final excitation. Different schemes are proposed with different speed limits that depend on the control capabilities. We also make use of trap rotations to create squeezed states without manipulating the trap frequencies.

The "fast-forward" approach by Masuda and Nakamura generates driving potentials to accelerate slow quantum adiabatic dynamics. First we present a streamlined version of the formalism that produces the main results in a few steps. Then we show the connection between this approach and inverse engineering based on Lewis-Riesenfeld invariants. We identify in this manner applications in which the engineered potential does not depend on the initial state. Finally we discuss more general applications exemplified by wave splitting processes.

Based on shortcuts to adiabaticity and quantum Zeno dynamics, we present a protocol to implement quantum state transfer (QST) in a quantum spin-1/2 chain. In the protocol, the complex Hamiltonian of an $N$-site system is simplified, and a simple effective Hamiltonian is present. It is shown that only the control of the coupling strengths between the boundary spins and the bulk spins are required for QST. We introduce a bang-bang shortcut to adiabaticity for the Dicke model, which we implement via a 2-D array of trapped ions in a Penning trap with a spin-dependent force detuned close to the center-of-mass drumhead mode. There is recently a surge of interest to cut down the time it takes to change the state of a quantum system adiabatically. We study for the time-dependent harmonic oscillator the transient energy excitation in speed-up processes designed to reproduce the initial populations at some predetermined final frequency and time, providing lower bounds and examples. Implications for the limits imposed to the process times and for the principle of unattainability of the absolute zero, in a single expansion or in quantum refrigerator cycles, are drawn.

We propose a protocol to realize fast high-fidelity quantum state transfer between distant optomechanical interfaces connected by a continuum waveguide.
