We investigate the cosmological applications of new gravitational scalar-tensor theories and we analyze them in the light of $H_0$ tension. In these theories the Lagrangian contains the Ricci scalar and its first and second derivatives in a specific combination that makes them free of ghosts, thus corresponding to healthy bi-scalar extensions of general relativity. We examine two specific models, and for particular choices of the model parameters we find that the effect of the additional terms is negligible at high redshifts, obtaining a coincidence with $Λ$CDM cosmology, however as time passes the deviation increases and thus at low redshifts the Hubble parameter acquires increased values ($H_0\approx 74 km/s/Mpc$) in a controlled way. The mechanism behind this behavior is the fact that the effective dark-energy equation-of-state parameter exhibits phantom behavior, which implies faster expansion, which is one of the theoretical requirements that are capable of alleviating the $H_0$ tension. Lastly, we confront the models with Cosmic Chronometer (CC) data showing full agreement within 1$σ$ confidence level.
Certain anomalies in the CMB bring out a tension between the six-parameter flat $Λ$CDM model and the CMB data. We revisit the PLANCK analysis with loop quantum cosmology (LQC) predictions and show that LQC alleviates both the large-scale power anomaly and the tension in the lensing amplitude. These differences arise because, in LQC, the primordial power spectrum is scale dependent for small $k$, with a specific power suppression. We conclude with a prediction of larger optical depth and power suppression in the $B$-mode polarization power spectrum on large scales.
We show that the $H_0$ tension can be alleviated in the framework of Horndeski/generalized galileon gravity. In particular, since the terms depending on $G_5$ control the friction in the Friedmann equation, we construct specific sub-classes in which it depends only on the field's kinetic energy. Since the latter is small at high redshifts, namely at redshifts which affected the CMB structure, the deviations from $Λ$CDM cosmology are negligible, however as time passes it increases and thus at low redshifts the Hubble function acquires increased values in a controlled way. We consider two Models…
We investigate the recently introduced metastable dark energy (DE) models after the final Planck 2018 legacy release. The essence of the present work is to analyze their evolution at the level of perturbations. Our analyses show that both the metastable dark energy models considered in this article, are excellent candidates to alleviate the $H_0$ tension. In particular, for the present models, Planck 2018 alone can alleviate the $H_0$ tension within 68\% CL. Along with the final cosmic microwave background data from the Planck 2018 legacy release, we also include external cosmological datasets…

Allowing for a nonvanishing spin tensor for cold dark matter ($ω_{\mathrm{DM}}=0$) has the consequence of giving rise to an effective $\mathrm{FLRW}$ dynamics with a small negative barotropic constant for an effective dark matter density ($-1/3<ω_{\mathrm{eff}}\leq0$). This turns out to solve the Hubble parameter tension in a straightforward way.

Basic notions of continuous media mechanics are introduced for spaces with affine connections and metrics. Stress (tension) tensors are considered, obtained by the use of the method of Lagrangians with covariant derivatives (MLCD). On the basis of the covariant Noether's identities for the energy-momentum tensors, Navier-Stokes' identities are found and generalized Navier-Cauchy as well as Navier-Stokes' equations are investigated over spaces with affine connections and metrics. We derive the low-energy effective action of four-dimensional gravity in the Randall-Sundrum scenario in which two 3-branes of opposite tension reside in a five-dimensional spacetime. The dimensional reduction with the Ansatz for the radion field by Charmousis et al., which solves five-dimensional linearized field equations, results in a class of scalar-tensor gravity theories. In the limit of vanishing radion fluctuations, the effective action reduces to the Brans-Dicke gravity in accord with the results of Garriga and Tanaka: Brans-Dicke gravity with the corresponding Brans-Dicke parameter $…
We investigate interacting scenarios which belong to a wider class, since they include a dynamical dark energy component whose equation of state follows various one-parameter parametrizations. We confront them with the latest observational data from Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), Joint light-curve (JLA) sample from Supernovae Type Ia, Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO), Hubble parameter measurements from Cosmic Chronometers (CC) and a gaussian prior on the Hubble parameter $H_0$. In all examined scenarios we find a non-zero interaction, nevertheless the non-interacting case is allowed with…

Sub-horizon perturbations in scalar-tensor theories have been shown to grow generically faster than in uncoupled models due to a positive, additive Yukawa force. In such cases, the amount of clustering becomes larger than in the standard cosmological model, exacerbating the observed tension in the $σ_8$ parameter. Here we show instead that in some simple cases of conformally coupled dark energy one can obtain a transient regime of negative Yukawa force, without introducing ghosts or other instabilities.
The low energy effective theory for the Randall-Sundrum two brane system is investigated with an emphasis on the role of the non-linear radion in the brane world. The equations of motion in the bulk is solved using a low energy expansion method. This allows us, through the junction conditions, to deduce the effective equations of motion for the gravity on the brane. It is shown that the gravity on the brane world is described by a quasi-scalar-tensor theory with a specific coupling function omega(Psi) = 3 Psi / 2(1-Psi) on the positive tension brane and omega(Phi) = -3 Phi / 2(1+Phi) on the ne…
In this paper my prime objective is to explain the generation of large tensor-to-scalar ratio from the single field sub-Planckian inflationary paradigm within Randall Sundrum (RS) single braneworld scenario in a model independent fashion. By explicit computation I have shown that the effective field theory prescription of brane inflation within RS single brane setup is consistent with sub- Planckian excursion of the inflaton field, which will further generate large value of tensor-to-scalar ratio, provided the energy density for inflaton degrees of freedom is high enough compared to the brane …
Recent analyses combining Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) data with other cosmological datasets report a higher scalar spectral index $n_s$, creating tension with a wide range of inflationary models. Since a Gauss-Bonnet term with a coupling function $ξ(ϕ) = 3λ/[4V(ϕ)]$ leaves $n_s$ nearly unchanged (up to a field rescaling) while reducing the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ by a factor $(1-λ)$, so choosing $(1-λ)$ sufficiently small effectively removes $r$ as a limiting observable, making it easier for inflationary models to satisfy the latest observational constraints and alleviating this tensi…
We investigate the evolution of scalar perturbations in $f(T)$ teleparallel gravity and its effects on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy. The $f(T)$ gravity generalizes the teleparallel gravity which is formulated on the Weitzenböck spacetime, characterized by the vanishing curvature tensor (absolute parallelism) and the non-vanishing torsion tensor. For the first time, we derive the observational constraints on the modified teleparallel gravity using the CMB temperature power spectrum from Planck's estimation, in addition to data from baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAO) and lo…
A massive scalar field is quantized in the background of a cosmic string which is generalized to a static flux-carrying codimension-2 brane in the locally flat multidimensional space-time. We find that the finite energy-momentum tensor is induced in the vacuum. The dependence of the tensor components on the brane flux and tension, as well as on the coupling to the space-time curvature scalar, is comprehensively analyzed. The tensor components are holomorphic functions of space dimension, decreasing exponentially with the distance from the brane. The case of the massless quantized scalar field …
In this work we will summarise the recent progress made in constructing consistent theories for a massive vector field with derivative self-interactions. The construction is such that only the three desired polarisations of the Proca field propagate. We apply a systematic construction of the interactions by using the anti-symmetric Levi-Civita tensors. This finite family of allowed derivative self-interactions can be also obtained from the decoupling limit by imposing that the Stückelberg field only contains second derivatives both with itself and with the transverse modes. These interactions …

We study a scalar-tensor bimetric cosmology in the Randall-Sundrum model with one positive tension brane, where the biscalar field is assumed to be confined on the brane. The effective Friedmann equations on the brane are obtained and analyzed. We comment on resolution of cosmological problems in this bimetric model.
The constraint of trans-Planckian censorship conjecture on brane inflation model is considered. The conjectures put an upper bound on the main parameter including temperature, inflation time, potential, and the tensor-to-scalar ratio parameter $r$. It is determined that the resulting constraint could be more stronger than what we have for the standard inflationary models. The constraint in general depends on the brane tension and it is concluded that the conjecture also confined the value of brane tension in order to have consistency for the model. Confining the brane tension turns into a dete…
In this paper, we investigate the Randall-Sundrum type braneworld models in the scalar-tensor theory with field derivative coupling to the Einstein tensor. We first formulate the generalized junction conditions of the metric and the scalar field on the timelike codimension-one hypersurface (=brane). With the use of these junction conditions, we then derive the Minkowski and de Sitter brane solutions embedded into the $Z_2$-symmetric five-dimensional anti-de Sitter (AdS) bulk spacetime. The configuration of the scalar field depends on the slice of the AdS spacetime. These branes are supported b…
We consider a braneworld model in the scalar-tensor gravity. In order to solve the gauge hierarchy problem in this model, our world should be confined on the positive tension brane rather than on the negative one. This is crucial to reproduce a correct Friedmann-like equation on the brane. Interestingly, it is found that the spacing of mass spectrum in this scenario is very tiny, but the light gravitons cannot be observed individually in colliders because of their sufficiently weak interaction with matter fields on the visible brane.

Recently proposed two swampland criteria that arising from string theory landscape lead to the important challenge of the realization of single-field inflationary models. Especially one of swampland criteria which implies a large tensor-to-scalar ratio is strongly in tension with recent observational results. In this paper, we explore the possibility if the swampland conjectures could be compatible with single-field inflationary scenarios if the effects due to the quantum theory of gravity are considered. We show that the quantum gravitational effects due to the nonlinear dispersion relation p…
