Recently, change detection methods for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images based on convolutional neural networks (CNN) have gained increasing research attention. However, existing CNN-based methods neglect the interactions among multilayer convolutions, and errors involved in the preclassification restrict the network optimization. To this end, we proposed a layer attention-based noise-tolerant network, termed LANTNet. In particular, we design a layer attention module that adaptively weights the feature of different convolution layers. In addition, we design a noise-tolerant loss function that effectively suppresses the impact of noisy labels. Therefore, the model is insensitive to noisy labels in the preclassification results. The experimental results on three SAR datasets show that the proposed LANTNet performs better compared to several state-of-the-art methods. The source codes are available at https://github.com/summitgao/LANTNet

Change detection from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery is a critical yet challenging task. Existing methods mainly focus on feature extraction in spatial domain, and little attention has been paid to frequency domain. Furthermore, in patch-wise feature analysis, some noisy features in the marginal region may be introduced. To tackle the above two challenges, we propose a Dual-Domain Network. Specifically, we take features from the discrete cosine transform domain into consideration and the reshaped DCT coefficients are integrated into the proposed model as the frequency domain branch. Fe…

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image change detection is a vital yet challenging task in the field of remote sensing image analysis. Most previous works adopt a self-supervised method which uses pseudo-labeled samples to guide subsequent training and testing. However, deep networks commonly require many high-quality samples for parameter optimization. The noise in pseudo-labels inevitably affects the final change detection performance. To solve the problem, we propose a Graph-based Knowledge Supplement Network (GKSNet). To be more specific, we extract discriminative information from the existi…

Benefited from the rapid and sustainable development of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sensors, change detection from SAR images has received increasing attentions over the past few years. Existing unsupervised deep learning-based methods have made great efforts to exploit robust feature representations, but they consume much time to optimize parameters. Besides, these methods use clustering to obtain pseudo-labels for training, and the pseudo-labeled samples often involve errors, which can be considered as "label noise". To address these issues, we propose a Dual Path Denoising Network (DPDNe…

Anomalous change detection (ACD) methods separate common, uninteresting changes from rare, significant changes in co-registered images collected at different points in time. In this paper we evaluate methods to improve the performance of ACD in detecting human activity in SAR imagery using outdoor music festivals as a target. Our results show that the low dimensionality of SAR data leads to poor performance of ACD when compared to simpler methods such as image differencing, but augmenting the dimensionality of our input feature space by incorporating local spatial information leads to enhanced…

Many researches have been carried out for change detection using temporal SAR images. In this paper an algorithm for change detection using SAR videos has been proposed. There are various challenges related to SAR videos such as high level of speckle noise, rotation of SAR image frames of the video around a particular axis due to the circular movement of airborne vehicle, non-uniform back scattering of SAR pulses. Hence conventional change detection algorithms used for optical videos and SAR temporal images cannot be directly utilized for SAR videos. We propose an algorithm which is a combinat…

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imaging systems operate by emitting radar signals from a moving object, such as a satellite, towards the target of interest. Reflected radar echoes are received and later used by image formation algorithms to form a SAR image. There is great interest in using SAR images in computer vision tasks such as classification or automatic target recognition. Today, however, SAR applications consist of multiple operations: image formation followed by image processing. In this work, we train a deep neural network that performs both the image formation and image processing t…
Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images are affected by a spatially-correlated and signal-dependent noise called speckle, which is very severe and may hinder image exploitation. Despeckling is an important task that aims at removing such noise, so as to improve the accuracy of all downstream image processing tasks. The first despeckling methods date back to the 1970's, and several model-based algorithms have been developed in the subsequent years. The field has received growing attention, sparkled by the availability of powerful deep learning models that have yielded excellent performance for in…

Spurred by this and given that Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) presents several advantages over its counterpart data domains, this paper surveys and assesses current SAR ATR architectures that employ the most popular dataset for the SAR domain, namely the Moving and Stationary Target Acquisition and Recognition (MSTAR) dataset. Based on the current methodology trends, we propose a taxonomy for the SAR ATR architectures, along wi…
Distinguishing between the instantaneous and delayed scatterers in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images is important for target identification and characterization. To perform this task, one can use the autocorrelation analysis of coordinate-delay images. However, due to the range-delay ambiguity the difference in the correlation properties between the instantaneous and delayed targets may be small. Moreover, the reliability of discrimination is affected by speckle, which is ubiquitous in SAR images, and requires statistical treatment. Previously, we have developed a maximum likelihood based …
Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is widely used for ground surface classification since it utilizes information on vegetation and soil unavailable in optical observation. Image classification often employs convolutional neural networks. However, they have serious problems such as long learning time and resolution degradation in their convolution and pooling processes. In this paper, we propose complex-valued reservoir computing (CVRC) to deal with complex-valued images in interferometric SAR (InSAR). We classify InSAR image data by using CVRC successfully with a higher resolution and a lower com…

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image change detection is a critical yet challenging task in the field of remote sensing image analysis. The task is non-trivial due to the following challenges: Firstly, intrinsic speckle noise of SAR images inevitably degrades the neural network because of error gradient accumulation. Furthermore, the correlation among various levels or scales of feature maps is difficult to be achieved through summation or concatenation. Toward this end, we proposed a siamese adaptive fusion network for SAR image change detection. To be more specific, two-branch CNN is utilize…

The proposed system, operating within the frequency range of 25.3-30.8 GHz, consists of a tapered slot antenna as the transmitter and two half-circle antennas as the receivers. The size of the antenna is 19.5 * 8 mm with a maximum gain of 8.5 dB. The transmitter and the receiver antennas are printed on the same board. This feature leads to a highly compact and flexible configuration, enabling the applicability of the propos…
Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is a day or night any-weather imaging modality that is an important tool in remote sensing. Most existing SAR image formation methods result in a maximum a posteriori image which approximates the reflectivity of an unknown ground scene. This single image provides no quantification of the certainty with which the features in the estimate should be trusted. In addition, finding the mode is generally not the best way to interrogate a posterior. This paper addresses these issues by introducing a sampling framework to SAR image formation. A hierarchical Bayesian model…

With climate change predicted to increase the likelihood of landslide events, there is a growing need for rapid landslide detection technologies that help inform emergency responses. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is a remote sensing technique that can provide measurements of affected areas independent of weather or lighting conditions. Usage of SAR, however, is hindered by domain knowledge that is necessary for the pre-processing steps and its interpretation requires expert knowledge. We provide simplified, pre-processed, machine-learning ready SAR datacubes for four globally located landslid…

Synthetic apertures find applications in many fields, such as radar, radio telescopes, microscopy, sonar, ultrasound, LiDAR, and optical imaging. They approximate the signal of a single hypothetical wide aperture sensor with either an array of static small aperture sensors or a single moving small aperture sensor. Common sense in synthetic aperture sampling is that a dense sampling pattern within a wide aperture is required to reconstruct a clear signal. In this article we show that there exists practical limits to both, synthetic aperture size and number of samples for the application of occl…
This paper proposes the use of sufficient cyclic prefix (CP) OFDM synthetic aperture radar (SAR) for foliage penetration (FOPEN). The foliage introduces phase and amplitude fluctuation which cause the sidelobes to increase and affects the final image of the obscured targets. The wideband CP-based OFDM SAR inherently eliminates the sidelobes that arise from the interference between targets on the same range line. The integrated sidelobe level ratio (ISLR) of the CP-based OFDM signal along the range direction is lower than that of the random noise signal by 2 dB for foliage penetration applicati…
