Automatic eye gaze estimation is an important problem in vision based assistive technology with use cases in different emerging topics such as augmented reality, virtual reality and human-computer interaction. Over the past few years, there has been an increasing interest in unsupervised and self-supervised learning paradigms as it overcomes the requirement of large scale annotated data. In this paper, we propose RAZE, a Region guided self-supervised gAZE representation learning framework which leverage from non-annotated facial image data. RAZE learns gaze representation via auxiliary supervision i.e. pseudo-gaze zone classification where the objective is to classify visual field into different gaze zones (i.e. left, right and center) by leveraging the relative position of pupil-centers. Thus, we automatically annotate pseudo gaze zone labels of 154K web-crawled images and learn feature representations via `Ize-Net' framework. `Ize-Net' is a capsule layer based CNN architecture which can efficiently capture rich eye representation. The discriminative behaviour of the feature representation is evaluated on four benchmark datasets: CAVE, TabletGaze, MPII and RT-GENE. Additionally, we evaluate the generalizability of the proposed network on two other downstream task (i.e. driver gaze estimation and visual attention estimation) which demonstrate the effectiveness of the learnt eye gaze representation.

Deep neural networks have significantly improved appearance-based gaze estimation accuracy. However, it still suffers from unsatisfactory performance when generalizing the trained model to new domains, e.g., unseen environments or persons. In this paper, we propose a plug-and-play gaze adaptation framework (PnP-GA), which is an ensemble of networks that learn collaboratively with the guidance of outliers. Since our proposed framework does not require ground-truth labels in the target domain, the existing gaze estimation networks can be directly plugged into PnP-GA and generalize the algorithms…

In challenging real-life conditions such as extreme head-pose, occlusions, and low-resolution images where the visual information fails to estimate visual attention/gaze direction, audio signals could provide important and complementary information. In this paper, we explore if audio-guided coarse head-pose can further enhance visual attention estimation performance for non-prolific faces. Since it is difficult to annotate audio signals for estimating the head-pose of the speaker, we use off-the-shelf state-of-the-art models to facilitate cross-modal weak-supervision. During the training phase…

As a critical cue for understanding human intention, human gaze provides a key signal for Human-Computer Interaction(HCI) applications. Appearance-based gaze estimation, which directly regresses the gaze vector from eye images, has made great progress recently based on Convolutional Neural Networks(ConvNets) architecture and open-source large-scale gaze datasets. However, encoding model-based knowledge into CNN model to further improve the gaze estimation performance remains a topic that needs to be explored. In this paper, we propose HybridGazeNet(HGN), a unified framework that encodes the ge…
We present GAZED- eye GAZe-guided EDiting for videos captured by a solitary, static, wide-angle and high-resolution camera. Eye-gaze has been effectively employed in computational applications as a cue to capture interesting scene content; we employ gaze as a proxy to select shots for inclusion in the edited video. Given the original video, scene content and user eye-gaze tracks are combined to generate an edited video comprising cinematically valid actor shots and shot transitions to generate an aesthetic and vivid representation of the original narrative. We model cinematic video editing as …

Gaze correction aims to redirect the person's gaze into the camera by manipulating the eye region, and it can be considered as a specific image resynthesis problem. Gaze correction has a wide range of applications in real life, such as taking a picture with staring at the camera. In this paper, we propose a novel method that is based on the inpainting model to learn from the face image to fill in the missing eye regions with new contents representing corrected eye gaze. Moreover, our model does not require the training dataset labeled with the specific head pose and eye angle information, thus…

When speakers describe an image, they tend to look at objects before mentioning them. In this paper, we investigate such sequential cross-modal alignment by modelling the image description generation process computationally. We take as our starting point a state-of-the-art image captioning system and develop several model variants that exploit information from human gaze patterns recorded during language production. In particular, we propose the first approach to image description generation where visual processing is modelled $\textit{sequentially}$. Our experiments and analyses confirm that …
Modeling and automatically recognizing surgical activities are fundamental steps toward automation in surgery and play important roles in providing timely feedback to surgeons. Accurately recognizing surgical activities in video poses a challenging problem that requires an effective means of learning both spatial and temporal dynamics. Human gaze and visual saliency carry important information about visual attention and can be used to extract more relevant features that better reflect these spatial and temporal dynamics. In this study, we propose to use human gaze with a spatio-temporal attent…

In recent years, predicting driver's focus of attention has been a very active area of research in the autonomous driving community. Unfortunately, existing state-of-the-art techniques achieve this by relying only on human gaze information, thereby ignoring scene semantics. We propose a novel Semantics Augmented GazE (SAGE) detection approach that captures driving specific contextual information, in addition to the raw gaze. Such a combined attention mechanism serves as a powerful tool to focus on the relevant regions in an image frame in order to make driving both safe and efficient. Using th…

The increased availability and accuracy of eye-gaze tracking technology has sparked attention-related research in psychology, neuroscience, and, more recently, computer vision and artificial intelligence. The attention mechanism in artificial neural networks is known to improve learning tasks. However, no previous research has combined the network attention and human attention. This paper describes a gaze-guided class activation mapping (GG-CAM) method to directly regulate the formation of network attention based on expert radiologists' visual attention for the chest X-ray pathology classifica…

Learning harmful shortcuts such as spurious correlations and biases prevents deep neural networks from learning the meaningful and useful representations, thus jeopardizing the generalizability and interpretability of the learned representation. The situation becomes even more serious in medical imaging, where the clinical data (e.g., MR images with pathology) are limited and scarce while the reliability, generalizability and transparency of the learned model are highly required. To address this problem, we propose to infuse human experts' intelligence and domain knowledge into the training of…
In this work, we present RadioTransformer, a novel visual attention-driven transformer framework, that leverages radiologists' gaze patterns and models their visuo-cognitive behavior for disease diagnosis on chest radiographs. Domain experts, such as radiologists, rely on visual information for medical image interpretation. On the other hand, deep neural networks have demonstrated significant promise in similar tasks even where visual interpretation is challenging. Eye-gaze tracking has been used to capture the viewing behavior of domain experts, lending insights into the complexity of visual …

Despite recent advances in appearance-based gaze estimation techniques, the need for training data that covers the target head pose and gaze distribution remains a crucial challenge for practical deployment. This work examines a novel approach for synthesizing gaze estimation training data based on monocular 3D face reconstruction. Unlike prior works using multi-view reconstruction, photo-realistic CG models, or generative neural networks, our approach can manipulate and extend the head pose range of existing training data without any additional requirements. We introduce a projective matching…
Human gaze is essential for various appealing applications. Aiming at more accurate gaze estimation, a series of recent works propose to utilize face and eye images simultaneously. Nevertheless, face and eye images only serve as independent or parallel feature sources in those works, the intrinsic correlation between their features is overlooked. In this paper we make the following contributions: 1) We propose a coarse-to-fine strategy which estimates a basic gaze direction from face image and refines it with corresponding residual predicted from eye images. 2) Guided by the proposed strategy,…
Gaze is the essential manifestation of human attention. In recent years, a series of work has achieved high accuracy in gaze estimation. However, the inter-personal difference limits the reduction of the subject-independent gaze estimation error. This paper proposes an unsupervised method for domain adaptation gaze estimation to eliminate the impact of inter-personal diversity. In domain adaption, we design an embedding representation with prediction consistency to ensure that the linear relationship between gaze directions in different domains remains consistent on gaze space and embedding sp…

Robust gaze estimation is a challenging task, even for deep CNNs, due to the non-availability of large-scale labeled data. Moreover, gaze annotation is a time-consuming process and requires specialized hardware setups. We propose MTGLS: a Multi-Task Gaze estimation framework with Limited Supervision, which leverages abundantly available non-annotated facial image data. MTGLS distills knowledge from off-the-shelf facial image analysis models, and learns strong feature representations of human eyes, guided by three complementary auxiliary signals: (a) the line of sight of the pupil (i.e. pseudo-…

Zero-shot learning (ZSL) aims to recognize novel classes by transferring semantic knowledge from seen classes to unseen classes. Since semantic knowledge is built on attributes shared between different classes, which are highly local, strong prior for localization of object attribute is beneficial for visual-semantic embedding. Interestingly, when recognizing unseen images, human would also automatically gaze at regions with certain semantic clue. Therefore, we introduce a novel goal-oriented gaze estimation module (GEM) to improve the discriminative attribute localization based on the class-l…

Recently, the progress of learning-by-synthesis has proposed a training model for synthetic images, which can effectively reduce the cost of human and material resources. However, due to the different distribution of synthetic images compared to real images, the desired performance cannot be achieved. Real images consist of multiple forms of light orientation, while synthetic images consist of a uniform light orientation. These features are considered to be characteristic of outdoor and indoor scenes, respectively. To solve this problem, the previous method learned a model to improve the reali…

This paper presents the selective use of eye-gaze information in learning human actions in Atari games. Vast evidence suggests that our eye movement convey a wealth of information about the direction of our attention and mental states and encode the information necessary to complete a task. Based on this evidence, we hypothesize that selective use of eye-gaze, as a clue for attention direction, will enhance the learning from demonstration. For this purpose, we propose a selective eye-gaze augmentation (SEA) network that learns when to use the eye-gaze information. The proposed network architec…

Shortcut learning is common but harmful to deep learning models, leading to degenerated feature representations and consequently jeopardizing the model's generalizability and interpretability. However, shortcut learning in the widely used Vision Transformer framework is largely unknown. Meanwhile, introducing domain-specific knowledge is a major approach to rectifying the shortcuts, which are predominated by background related factors. For example, in the medical imaging field, eye-gaze data from radiologists is an effective human visual prior knowledge that has the great potential to guide th…

There is a widespread assumption that the peak velocities of visually guided saccades in the dark are up to 10~\% slower than those made in the light. Studies that questioned the impact of the surrounding brightness conditions, come to differing conclusions, whether they have an influence or not and if so, in which manner. The problem is of a complex nature as the illumination condition itself may not contribute to different measured peak velocities solely but in combination with the estimation of the pupil size due to its deformation during saccades or different gaze positions. Even the measu…
