The CUPID-Mo experiment, located at Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane (France), was a demonstrator experiment for CUPID. It consisted of an array of 20 Li$_2^{100}$MoO$_4$ (LMO) calorimeters each equipped with a Ge light detector (LD) for particle identification. In this work, we present the result of a search for two-neutrino and neutrinoless double beta decays of $^{100}$Mo to the first 0$^+$ and $2^+$ excited states of $^{100}$Ru using the full CUPID-Mo exposure (2.71 kg$\times$yr of LMO). We measure the half-life of $2νββ$ decay to the $0^{+}_1$ state as $T_{1/2}^{2ν\rightarrow 0_1^+}=7.5\pm 0.8 \ \text{(stat.)} \ ^{+ 0.4}_{-0.3} \ \text{(syst.)} )\times 10^{20} \ \mathrm{yr}$. The bolometric technique enables measurement of the electron energies as well as the gamma rays from nuclear de-excitation and this allows us to set new limits on the two-neutrino decay to the $2_1^+$ state of $T^{2ν\rightarrow 2_1^+}_{1/2}>4.4\times 10^{21} \ \mathrm{yr} \ \text{(90 % c.i.)}$ and on the neutrinoless modes of $T_{1/2}^{0ν\rightarrow 2_1^+}>2.1\times10^{23} \ \mathrm{yr}\ \text{(90 % c.i.)}$, $T_{1/2}^{0ν\rightarrow 0_1^+}>1.2\times10^{23} \ \mathrm{yr}\ \text{(90 % c.i.)}$. Information on the electrons spectral shape is obtained which allows us to make the first comparison of the single state (SSD) and higher state (HSD) $2νββ$ decay models for the $0_1^+$ excited state of $^{100}$Ru.
A convincing observation of neutrino-less double beta decay (0$ν$DBD) relies on the possibility of operating high energy-resolution detectors in background-free conditions. Scintillating cryogenic calorimeters are one of the most promising tools to fulfill the requirements for a next-generation experiment. Several steps have been taken to demonstrate the maturity of this technique, starting from the successful experience of CUPID-0. The CUPID-0 experiment demonstrated the complete rejection of the dominant alpha background measuring the lowest counting rate in the region of interest for this t…
CUPID-0 is the first pilot experiment of CUPID, a next-generation project searching for neutrino-less double beta decay. In its first scientific run, CUPID-0 operated 26 ZnSe cryogenic calorimeters coupled to light detectors in the underground Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso. In this work, we analyzed a ZnSe exposure of 11.34 kg$\times$yr to search for the neutrino-less double beta decay of $^{70}$Zn and for the neutrino-less positron-emitting electron capture of $^{64}$Zn. We found no evidence for these decays and set 90$\%$ credible interval limits of ${\rm T}_{1/2}^{0νββ}(^{70}{\rm Zn})…
CUPID is a proposed future tonne-scale bolometric neutrinoless double beta decay ($0νββ$) experiment to probe the Majorana nature of neutrinos and discover Lepton Number Violation in the so-called inverted hierarchy region of the neutrino mass. CUPID will be built on experience, expertise and lessons learned in CUORE, and will exploit the current CUORE infrastructure as much as possible. In order to achieve its ambitious science goals, CUPID aims to dramatically reduce the backgrounds in the region of interest introducing a high efficiently $α$/$β$ discrimination techniques, also demonstrated …
The CUPID-Mo experiment at the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane (France) is a demonstrator for CUPID, the next-generation ton-scale cryogenic $0νββ$ experiment. It consists of a 4.2 kg array of 20 enriched Li$_{2}$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ scintillating bolometers to search for the lepton number violating process of $0νββ$ decay in $^{100}$Mo. With more than one year of operation (2.16 kg$\times$yr of physics data), no event in the region of interest and hence no evidence for $0νββ$ is observed. We report a new limit on the half-life of $0νββ$ decay in $^{100}$Mo of $T_{1/2} > 1.5 \times 10^{24}\,$yr at…
The CUPID0 experiment searches for double beta decay using cryogenic calorimeters with double (heat and light) read-out. The detector, consisting of 24 ZnSe crystals 95$\%$ enriched in $^{82}$Se and 2 natural ZnSe crystals, started data-taking in 2017 at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso. We present the search for the neutrino-less double beta decay of $^{82}$Se into the 0$_1^+$, 2$_1^+$ and 2$_2^+$ excited states of $^{82}$Kr with an exposure of 5.74 kg$\cdot$yr (2.24$\times$10$^{25}$ emitters$\cdot$yr). We found no evidence of the decays and set the most stringent limits on the widths of t…
We report the result of the search for neutrinoless double beta decay of $^{82}$Se obtained with CUPID-0, the first large array of scintillating Zn$^{82}$Se cryogenic calorimeters implementing particle identification. We observe no signal in a 1.83 kg yr $^{82}$Se exposure and we set the most stringent lower limit on the \onu $^{82}$Se half-life T$^{0ν}_{1/2}>$ 2.4$\times \mathrm{10}^{24}$ yr (90\% credible interval), which corresponds to an effective Majorana neutrino mass m$_{ββ} <$ (376-770) meV depending on the nuclear matrix element calculations. The heat-light readout provides a powerful…
CUPID-0 is the first pilot experiment of CUPID, a next-generation project for the measurement of neutrinoless double beta decay (0$ν$DBD) with scintillating bolometers. The detector, consisting of 24 enriched and 2 natural ZnSe crystals, has been taking data at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso from June 2017 to December 2018, collecting a $^{82}$Se exposure of 5.29 kg$\times$yr. In this paper we present the phase-I results in the search for 0$ν$DBD. We demonstrate that the technology implemented by CUPID-0 allows us to reach the lowest background for calorimetric experiments: $(3.5^{+1.0}_{…
CUPID is a next-generation neutrinoless double-beta decay experiment that will require cryogenic light detectors to improve background suppression, via the simultaneous readout of heat and light channels from its scintillating crystals. In this work we showcase light detectors based on a novel Ir-Pt bilayer transition edge sensor. We have performed a systematic study to improve the thermal coupling between the photon absorber and the sensor, and thereby its responsivity. Our first devices meet CUPID's baseline noise requirement of <100~eV rms. Our detectors have risetimes of $\sim$180 $μ$s and…
The CUPID-Mo experiment is searching for neutrinoless double beta decay in $^{100}$Mo, evaluating the technology of cryogenic scintillating Li$_{2}^{100}$MoO$_4$ detectors for CUPID (CUORE Upgrade with Particle ID). CUPID-Mo detectors feature background suppression using a dual-readout scheme with Li$_{2}$MoO$_4$ crystals complemented by Ge bolometers for light detection. The detection of both heat and scintillation light signals allows the efficient discrimination of $α$ from $γ$&$β$ events. In this proceedings, we discuss results from the first 2 months of data taking in spring 2019. In addi…
The CUPID-0 experiment searches for neutrinoless double beta decay ($0νββ$) using the first array of enriched Zn$^{82}$Se scintillating bolometers with double (heat and light) read-out. To further enhance the CUPID-0 detector performances, the heat-light correlation has been exploited to improve the energy resolution. Different decorrelation algorithms have been studied and the best result is the average reduction of the full width at half maximum (FWHM) energy resolution to $(90.5\pm0.6)~\%$ of its original value , corresponding to a change from $\text{FWHM}=(20.7\pm0.5)~\text{keV}$ to $\text…
CUPID-0 is the first large mass array of enriched Zn$^{82}$Se scintillating low temperature calorimeters, operated at LNGS since 2017. During its first scientific runs, CUPID-0 collected an exposure of 9.95 kg yr. Thanks to the excellent rejection of $α$ particles, we attained the lowest background ever measured with thermal detectors in the energy region where we search for the signature of $^{82}$Se neutrinoless double beta decay. In this work we develop a model to reconstruct the CUPID-0 background over the whole energy range of experimental data. We identify the background sources exploiti…

CUPID-Mo is a bolometric experiment to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay ($0νββ$) of $^{100}$Mo. In this article, we detail the CUPID-Mo detector concept, assembly, installation in the underground laboratory in Modane in 2018, and provide results from the first datasets. The demonstrator consists of an array of 20 scintillating bolometers comprised of $^{100}$Mo-enriched 0.2 kg Li$_2$MoO$_4$ crystals. The detectors are complemented by 20 thin cryogenic Ge bolometers acting as light detectors to distinguish $α$ from $γ$/$β$ events by the detection of both heat and scintillation light si…
We present the performances of two 92% enriched $^{130}$TeO$_2$ crystals operated as thermal bolometers in view of a next generation experiment to search for neutrinoless double beta decay of $^{130}$Te. The crystals, 435 g each, show an energy resolution, evaluated at the 2615 keV $γ$-line of $^{208}$Tl, of 6.5 and 4.3 keV FWHM. The only observable internal radioactive contamination arises from $^{238}$U (15 and 8 $μ$Bq/kg, respectively). The internal activity of the most problematic nuclei for neutrinoless double beta decay, $^{226}$Ra and $^{228}$Th, are both evaluated as $<$3.1 $μ$Bq/kg fo…
The nucleus is an extraordinarily complex object where fundamental forces are at work. The solution of this many-body problem has challenged physicists for decades: several models with complementary virtues and flaws have been adopted, none of which has a universal predictive capability. Double beta decay is a second-order weak nuclear decay whose precise measurement might steer fundamental improvements in nuclear theory. Its knowledge paves the way to a much better understanding of many-body nuclear dynamics and clarifies, in particular, the role of multiparticle states. This is a useful inpu…
The CUPID Collaboration is designing a tonne-scale, background-free detector to search for double beta decay with sufficient sensitivity to fully explore the parameter space corresponding to the inverted neutrino mass hierarchy scenario. One of the CUPID demonstrators, CUPID-Mo, has proved the potential of enriched Li$_{2}$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ crystals as suitable detectors for neutrinoless double beta decay search. In this work, we characterised cubic crystals that, compared to the cylindrical crystals used by CUPID-Mo, are more appealing for the construction of tightly packed arrays. We measured …
A scintillating bolometer technology based on $^{100}$Mo-enriched lithium molybdate (Li$_2$$^{100}$MoO$_4$) crystals has been developed by LUMINEU to search for neutrinoless double-beta ($0ν2β$) decay of $^{100}$Mo. The results of several low temperature tests at underground environments have proved the reproducibility of high detector performance and crystal radiopurity: in particular $\sim$5--6~keV FWHM energy resolution and at least 9$σ$ rejection of $α$'s in the vicinity of the $0ν2β$ decay of $^{100}$Mo (3034 keV) and below 10~$μ$Bq/kg bulk activity of $^{228}$Th and $^{226}$Ra. A modest …
A brief review on double beta decay to excited states of daughter nuclei is given. The ECEC(ov) transision to the excited states are discussed in association with a possible enhancement of the decay rate by several orders of magnitude.
Simultaneous measurement of phonon and light signatures is an effective way to reduce the backgrounds and increase the sensitivity of CUPID, a next-generation bolometric neutrinoless double-beta decay ($0νββ$) experiment. Light emission in tellurium dioxide (TeO$_2$) crystals, one of the candidate materials for CUPID, is dominated by faint Cherenkov radiation, and the high refractive index of TeO$_2$ complicates light collection. Positive identification of $0νββ$ events therefore requires high-sensitivity light detectors and careful optimization of light transport. A detailed microphysical und…
Recent observation of beta decay of 115-In to the first excited level of 115-Sn with an extremely low Q_beta value (Q_beta ~ 1 keV) could be used to set a limit on neutrino mass. To give restriction potentially competitive with those extracted from experiments with 3-H (~2 eV) and 187-Re (~15 eV), atomic mass difference between 115-In and 115-Sn and energy of the first 115-Sn level should be remeasured with higher accuracy (possibly of the order of ~1 eV).
The coincidence detection efficiency of the TUNL--ITEP apparatus designed for measuring half-life times of two-neutrino double-beta decay transitions to excited final states in daughter nuclei has been measured with a factor of 2.4 improved accuracy. In addition, the previous measuring time of 455 days for the study of the Mo-100 two-neutrino double-beta decay to the first excited 0+ state in Ru-100 has been increased by 450 days, and a new result (combined with the previous measurement obtained with the same apparatus) for this transition is presented: T_(1/2) = [5.5 (+1.2/-0.8) (stat) +/- 0.…
A search for the double beta decay transition of $^{94}$Zr into the first excited state of $^{94}$Mo has been performed at the Felsenkeller underground laboratory in Dresden, Germany. A 341.1 g zirconium sample with natural isotopic composition has been measured for 43.9 d in an ultra low background gamma spectroscopy setup. No signal has been observed and a new best lower half-life limit is set as $5.2\times10^{19}$ yr (90% CI). This limit is valid for the $0νββ$ and $2νββ$ decay into excited states of $^{94}$Mo but cannot distinguish between the two modes. Existing limits are improved by 50%…
Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay is a phenomenon of fundamental interest in particle physics. The decay rates of double beta decay transitions to the excited states can provide input for Nuclear Transition Matrix Element calculations for the relevant two neutrino double beta decay process. It can be useful as supplementary information for the calculation of Nuclear Transition Matrix Element for the neutrinoless double beta decay process. In the present work, double beta decay of $^{94}$Zr to the $2^{+}_{1}$ excited state of $^{94}$Mo at 871.1 keV is studied using a low background $\sim$ 230 cm$^…
We report the measurement of the two-neutrino double-beta ($2νββ$) decay of $^{100}$Mo to the ground state of $^{100}$Ru using lithium molybdate (\crystal) scintillating bolometers. The detectors were developed for the CUPID-Mo program and operated at the EDELWEISS-III low background facility in the Modane underground laboratory. From a total exposure of $42.235$ kg$\times$d, the half-life of $^{100}$Mo is determined to be $T_{1/2}^{2ν}=[7.12^{+0.18}_{-0.14}\,\mathrm{(stat.)}\pm0.10\,\mathrm{(syst.)}]\times10^{18}$ years. This is the most accurate determination of the $2νββ$ half-life of $^{10…
Double beta decay of $^{100}$Mo to the excited states of daughter nuclei has been studied using a 600 cm$^3$ low-background HPGe detector and an external source consisting of 2588 g of 97.5% enriched metallic $^{100}$Mo, which was formerly inside the NEMO-3 detector and used for the NEMO-3 measurements of $^{100}$Mo. The half-life for the two-neutrino double beta decay of $^{100}$Mo to the excited 0$^+_1$ state in $^{100}$Ru is measured to be $T_{1/2}=[7.5 \pm{0.6}(stat) \pm {0.6}(syst)]\cdot 10^{20}$ yr. For other $(0ν+ 2ν)$ transitions to the 2$^+_1$, 2$^+_2$, 0$^+_2$, 2$^+_3$ and 0$^+_3$ le…
A search for alpha and double beta decays of ytterbium isotopes was performed with an ultra-low background high purity germanium detector at Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory (Italy). A 194.7 g Yb$_2$(C$_2$O$_4$)$_3$ powder sample was measured for 11.3~d with a total Yb exposure of 1.25 kg$\times$d. Half-life limits for $α$-decay modes of $^{168}$Yb, $^{170}$Yb, $^{171}$Yb, $^{172}$Yb, $^{173}$Yb, $^{174}$Yb and $^{176}$Yb into the first excited states have been obtained between $6\times10^{14}$ yr and $2\times10^{16}$ yr. These are the first experimental constraints of these decay modes. Doub…
A search for double beta decays of $^{110}$Pd and $^{102}$Pd into excited states of the daughter nuclides has been performed using three ultra-low background gamma-spectrometry measurements in the Felsenkeller laboratory, Germany, the HADES laboratory, Belgium and at the LNGS, Italy. The combined Bayesian analysis of the three measurements sets improved half-life limits for the $2νββ$ and $0νββ$ decay modes of the $2^+_1$, $0^+_1$ and $2^+_2$ transitions in $^{110}$Pd to $2.9\cdot10^{20}$ yr, $4.0\cdot10^{20}$ yr and $3.0\cdot10^{20}$ yr respectively and in $^{102}$Pd to $7.6\cdot10^{18}$ yr, …
Molybdenum based crystals such as Li$_2$MoO$_4$ and CaMoO$_4$ are emerging as leading candidates for next generation experiments searching for neutrino-less double beta decay with cryogenic calorimeters (CUPID, AMoRE). The exquisite energy resolution and high radio-purity of these crystals come at the cost of a potentially detrimental background source: the two neutrinos double beta decay of $^{100}$Mo. Indeed, the fast half-life of this decay mode, combined with the slow response of cryogenic calorimeters, would result in pile-up events in the energy region of interest for neutrino-less doubl…
A systematic study of the inclusive ($0ν+2ν$) double beta ($ββ$) decay of $^{100}$Mo to various excited final states of $^{100}$Ru was performed. Utilizing two large HPGe detectors operated in coincidence, a search for the subsequent deexcitation gamma-gamma cascades was conducted. A 1.05-kg sample of isotopically enriched (98.4%) $^{100}$Mo was investigated for 455 days, yielding an unambiguous observation of the double beta decay of $^{100}$Mo to the $0_1^+$ state (1130.3 keV) of $^{100}$Ru. This excited final state decays via the $0_1^+ \to 2_1^+ \to 0_{gs}^+$ sequence (with $E_{\gamma1}$ =…
For the first time, a cadmium tungstate crystal scintillator enriched in $^{116}$Cd has been succesfully tested as a scintillating bolometer. The measurement was performed above ground at a temperature of 18 mK. The crystal mass was 34.5 g and the enrichment level ~82 %. Despite a substantial pile-up effect due to above-ground operation, the detector demonstrated a high energy resolution (2-7 keV FWHM in 0.2-2.6 MeV $γ$ energy range), a powerful particle identification capability and a high level of internal radiopurity. These results prove that cadmium tungstate is an extremely promising dete…
In the context of the LENS R&D solar neutrino project, the gamma spectrum of a sample of metallic indium was measured using a single experimental setup of 4 HP-Ge detectors located underground at the Gran Sasso National Laboratories (LNGS), Italy. A gamma line at the energy (497.48 +/- 0.21) keV was found that is not present in the background spectrum and that can be identified as a gamma quantum following the beta decay of In-115 to the first excited state of Sn-115 (9/2+ --> 3/2+). This decay channel of In-115, which is reported here for the first time, has an extremely low Q-value, Q = (2 +…
Neutrino accompanied double beta-decay of Ge-76 can populate the ground state and the excited states of Se-76. While the decay to the ground state has been observed with a half-life of 1.74 +0.18 -0.16 10^21 years, decays to the excited states have not yet been observed. Nuclear matrix elements depend on details of the nuclear transitions. A measurement of the half-life of the transition considered here could help to reduce the uncertainties of the calculations of the nuclear matrix element for the neutrinoless double beta decay of Ge-76. This parameter relates the half-life of the process to …
For the first time an extensive search for various double beta decay modes of 124Sn and 112Sn has been performed. A total exposure of 43.29 kg.days has been accumulated. New half-life limits of 124Sn into excited states of 124Te have been obtained; the lower half-life limit for the first excited 2+ state at 602.7keV is T_1/2 > 3.1 *10^{18}yrs (90 % CL) and for the first excited 0+ state T_1/2 > 7.7 *10^{18}yrs (90 % CL). For the very first time, ground state and excited state transitions of 112Sn have been experimentally explored. The obtained half-life limits for ECEC and beta+/EC into the fi…
Triple beta decay of $^{150}$Nd to the ground and excited states of $^{150}$Eu and quadruple beta decay of $^{150}$Nd to the excited states of $^{150}$Gd have been studied using a 400 cm$^3$ low-background HPGe detector and an external source consisting of 3046 g of natural Nd$_2$O$_3$ powder. A half-life limit for the quadruple beta decay to the 0$_1^+$ state of $^{150}$Gd was found to be $T_{1/2} (0ν+4ν) > 8.7\times10^{20}$ yr (90\% C.L.). For other (0$ν$+4$ν$) transitions to the 2$_1^+$, 3$_1^-$, 4$^+_1$, 2$_2^+$ and 2$^+_3$ excited states limits for the first time have been obtained at the…
Current experiments to search for broken lepton-number symmetry through the observation of neutrinoless double-beta decay ($0\mathrm{νββ}$) provide the most stringent limits on the Majorana nature of neutrinos and the effective Majorana neutrino mass ($m_{ββ}$). The next-generation experiments will focus on the sensitivity to the $0\mathrm{νββ}$ half-life of $\mathcal{O}(10^{27}$--$10^{28}$~years$)$ and $m_{ββ}\lesssim15$~meV, which would provide complete coverage of the so-called Inverted Ordering region of the neutrino mass parameter space. By taking advantage of recent technological breakth…
The double beta decay of $^{150}$Nd to the first excited 0$^+$ level of $^{150}$Sm ($E_{exc}$ = 740.5 keV) has been investigated with the help of the ultra-low-background setup consisting of four HP Ge (high-purity germanium) detectors (${\approx}$ 225 cm$^3$ volume each one) at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory of INFN (Italy). A highly purified 2.381-kg sample of neodymium oxide (Nd$_2$O$_3$) was used as a source of $γ$ quanta expected in the decays. Gamma quanta with energies 334.0 keV and 406.5 keV emitted after deexcitation of the $0_1^+$ 740.5 keV level of $^{150}$Sm are observed in …
A search for the various double beta decay modes of 124Sn and 112Sn has been performed on 75 kg.days of data. New half-life limits for excited states in 124Sn have been obtained including a lower limit for the decay into the first excited 2+ state of 124Te of T_half > 0.87e20 yrs (90% CL) and into the first excited 0+ state of T_half > 1.08e20 yrs (90% CL). Ground state and excited state transitions of 112Sn have also been experimentally explored. A limit for the 2 neutrino double electron capture of T_half > 1.8e19 yrs (90% CL) is obtained. The non-observation of de-excitation gammas from the…
We present the search for Lorentz violation in the double beta decay of ^{82}Se~with CUPID-0, using an exposure of 9.95 kg x y. We found no evidence for the searched signal and set a limit on the isotropic components of the Lorentz violating coefficient of $\mathring{a}_{\text{of}}^{(3)} < 4.1\cdot10^{-6}$ GeV (90\% Credible Interval). This results is obtained with a Bayesian analysis of the experimental data and fully includes the systematic uncertainties of the model. This is the first limit on $\mathring{a}_{\text{of}}^{(3)}$ obtained with a scintillating bolometer, showing the potentiality…
As one of the primordial radioactive isotopes, $^{232}$Th mainly undergoes $α$-decay with a half-life of $1.402 \times 10^{10}$ yr. However, it is also one of 35 double beta decay candidates in which the single $β$-decay is forbidden or strongly suppressed. 181 mg of thorium contained in a gas mantle was measured in an HPGe well-detector at the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory (LNGS) with a total exposure of 3.25 g $\times$ d. We obtain half-life limits on all double beta decay modes of $^{232}$Th to excited states of $^{232}$U on the order of $10^{11-15}$ yr. For the most likely transition i…
This paper reports on the development of a technology involving $^{100}$Mo-enriched scintillating bolometers, compatible with the goals of CUPID, a proposed next-generation bolometric experiment to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay. Large mass ($\sim$1~kg), high optical quality, radiopure $^{100}$Mo-containing zinc and lithium molybdate crystals have been produced and used to develop high performance single detector modules based on 0.2--0.4~kg scintillating bolometers. In particular, the energy resolution of the lithium molybdate detectors near the $Q$-value of the double-beta transit…
Double beta decay of $^{136}$Xe to excited states of $^{136}$Ba (DBD-ES) has not yet been discovered experimentally yet. The experimental signature of such decays, one or two gamma rays following the beta signals, can be identified more effectively in a gaseous detector with the help of topological signatures. We have investigated key parameters of particle trajectories of DBD-ES with Monte Carlo simulation data of the proposed PandaX-III detector as an example. The background rates can be reduced by about one order of magnitude while keeping more than half of signals with topological analysis…
A search for excited state transitions of double beta decay in Pd110 and double electron capture in Pd102 has been performed in the HADES underground laboratory with two low background HPGe detectors in sandwich configuration. After an exposure of 35.92 kg*d, no signal was found. The frequentist spectral analysis resulted in lower half-life limits of 1.98e20 yr and 1.72e20 yr (95% CL) for the first 0+ and 2+ excited state in Pd110 respectively. This is an improvement by more than a factor of 3 with respect to previous measurements. In Pd102, the lower half-life limit could be improved to 5.95e…
The CUORICINO experiment was an array of 62 TeO$_{2}$ single-crystal bolometers with a total $^{130}$Te mass of $11.3\,$kg. The experiment finished in 2008 after more than 3 years of active operating time. Searches for both $0ν$ and $2ν$ double-beta decay to the first excited $0^{+}$ state in $^{130}$Xe were performed by studying different coincidence scenarios. The analysis was based on data representing a total exposure of N($^{130}$Te)$\cdot$t=$9.5\times10^{25}\,$y. No evidence for a signal was found. The resulting lower limits on the half lives are $T^{2ν}_{1/2}(^{130} Te\rightarrow^{130} …
Excited states in 17C were investigated through the measurement of beta?-delayed neutrons and gamma rays emitted in the ? decay of 17B. In the measurement, three negative-parity states and two inconclusive states, were identified in 17C above the neutron threshold energy, and seven gamma-lines were identified in a beta?-delayed multiple neutron emission of the 17B ? decay. From these transitions, the beta?-decay scheme of 17B was determined. In the present work, the fibeta-NMR technique is combined with the ?-delayed particle measurements using a fragmentation-induced spin-polarized 17B beam. …
The suppression of spurious events in the region of interest for neutrinoless double beta decay will play a major role in next generation experiments. The background of detectors based on the technology of cryogenic calorimeters is expected to be dominated by α particles, that could be disentangled from double beta decay signals by exploiting the difference in the emission of the scintillation light. CUPID-0, an array of enriched Zn$^{82}$Se scintillating calorimeters, is the first large mass demonstrator of this technology. The detector started data-taking in 2017 at the Laboratori Nazionali …
The Majorana Demonstrator is a neutrinoless double-beta decay search consisting of a low-background modular array of high-purity germanium detectors, $\sim2/3$ of which are enriched to 88\% in $^{76}$Ge. The experiment is also searching for double-beta decay of $^{76}$Ge to excited states (e.s.) in $^{76}$Se. $^{76}$Ge can decay into three daughter states of $^{76}$Se, with clear event signatures consisting of a $ββ$-decay followed by the prompt emission of one or two $γ$-rays. This results with high probability in multi-detector coincidences. The granularity of the Demonstrator detector array…
Double beta decay of $^{150}$Nd and $^{148}$Nd to the excited states of daughter nuclei have been studied using a 400 cm$^3$ low-background HPGe detector and an external source consisting of 3046 g of natural Nd$_2$O$_3$ powder. The half-life for the two-neutrino double beta decay of $^{150}$Nd to the excited 0$^+_1$ state in $^{150}$Sm is measured to be $T_{1/2}=[1.33^{+0.36}_{-0.23}(stat)^{+0.27}_{-0.13}(syst)]\cdot 10^{20}$ y. For other $(0ν+ 2ν)$ transitions to the 2$^+_1$, 2$^+_2$, 2$^+_3$, and 0$^+_2$ levels in $^{150}$Sm, limits are obtained at the level of $\sim (2-8)\cdot 10^{20}$ y. …
The MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR is searching for double-beta decay of $^{76}$Ge to excited states (E.S.) in $^{76}$Se using a modular array of high purity Germanium detectors. $^{76}$Ge can decay into three E.S.s of $^{76}$Se. The E.S. decays have a clear event signature consisting of a $ββ$-decay with the prompt emission of one or two $γ$-rays, resulting in with high probability in a multi-site event. The granularity of the DEMONSTRATOR detector array enables powerful discrimination of this event signature from backgrounds. Using 21.3 kg-y of isotopic exposure, the DEMONSTRATOR has set world leadin…
Double-beta decay is a rare nuclear process in which two neutrons in the nucleus are converted to two protons with the emission of two electrons and two electron anti-neutrinos. We measured the half life of the two-neutrino double-beta decay of $^{150}$Nd to excited final states of $^{150}$Sm by detecting the de-excitation gamma rays of the daughter nucleus. This study yields the first detection of the coincidence gamma rays from the 0$^+_1$ excited state of $^{150}$Sm. These gamma rays have energies of 333.97 keV and 406.52 keV, and are emitted in coincidence through a 0$^+_1\rightarrow$2$^+_…
A search for double beta decays of the palladium isotopes 110Pd and 102Pd into excited states of their daughters was performed and first half-life limits for the 2νββ and 0νββ decays into first excited 0+ and 2+ states of 5.89e19 yr and 4.40e19 yr (95% CL) for the 110Pd decay were obtained. The half-life limits for the corresponding double electron capture transition of 102Pd are 7.64e18 yr and 2.68e18 yr (95% CL) respectively. These are the first measurements for 102Pd.
Single beta decay of 115In to the first excited level of 115Sn (Eexc = 497.3 keV) is known as beta decay with the lowest Q value. To determine the Q precisely, one has to measure very accurately the Eexc value. A sample of tin enriched in 115Sn to 50.7% was irradiated by proton beam at the U-120 accelerator of INR, Kyiv. The 115Sb radioactive isotope, created in 115Sn(p,n)115Sb reaction, decays with T1/2 = 32 min to 115Sn populating the 497 keV level with ~ 96% probability. The total statistics of ~ 10^5 counts collected in the 497 keV peak in series of measurements, exact description of the p…
