In this paper, we propose two strategies for decreasing the error of arbitrary single-mode Gaussian transformations implemented using one-way quantum computation on a four-node linear cluster state. We show that it is possible to minimize the error of the arbitrary single-mode Gaussian transformation by a proper choice of the weight coefficients of the cluster state. We modify the computation scheme by adding a non-Gaussian state obtained using a cubic phase gate as one of the nodes of the cluster. This further decreases the computation error. We evaluate the efficiencies of the proposed optimization schemes comparing the probabilities of the error correction of the quantum computations with and without optimizations. We have shown that for some transformations, the error probability can be reduced by up to 900 times.
With the Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill (GKP) encoding, Clifford gates and error correction can be carried out using simple Gaussian operations. Still, non-Clifford gates, required for universality, require non-Gaussian elements. In their original proposal, GKP suggested a particularly simple method of using a single application of the cubic phase gate to perform the logical non-Clifford T-gate. Here we show that this cubic phase gate approach performs extraordinarily poorly, even for arbitrarily large amounts of squeezing in the GKP state. Thus, contrary to common belief, the cubic phase gate is n…
In our work, we compare three teleportation protocols: the original protocol, the photon subtraction protocol, and the protocol with a cubic phase gate. We evaluate the fidelity of each protocol using the example of teleportation of the squeezed state and the Schrodinger's cat state. We show that, under equal conditions, the teleportation scheme with a cubic phase gate achieves significantly higher fidelity than the other protocols considered.
In order to achieve universal quantum computation using continuous variables, one needs to jump out of the set of Gaussian operations and have a non-Gaussian element, such as the cubic phase gate. However, such a gate is currently very difficult to implement in practice. Here we introduce an experimentally viable 'repeat-until-success' approach to generating the cubic phase gate, which is achieved using sequential photon subtractions and Gaussian operations. We find that our scheme offers benefits in terms of the expected time until success, although we require a primitive quantum memory.
We present a concept of non-Gaussian measurement composed of a non-Gaussian ancillary state, linear optics and adaptive heterodyne measurement, and on the basis of this we also propose a simple scheme of implementing a quantum cubic gate on a traveling light beam. In analysis of the cubic gate in the Heisenberg representation, we find that nonlinearity of the gate is independent from nonclassicality; the nonlinearity is generated solely by a classical nonlinear adaptive control in a measurement-and-feedforward process while the nonclassicality is attached by the non-Gaussian ancilla that suppr…
We propose a modified quantum teleportation scheme to increase the teleportation accuracy by applying a cubic phase gate to the displaced squeezed state. We have described the proposed scheme in Heisenberg's language, evaluating it from the point of view of adding an error in teleportation, and have shown that it allows achieving less error than the original scheme. Repeating the description in the language of wave functions, we have found the range of the displacement values, at which our conclusions will be valid. Using the example of teleportation of the vacuum state, we have shown that the…
Unitary non-Gaussian nonlinearity is one of the key components required for quantum computation and other developing applications of quantum information processing. Sufficient operation of this kind is still not available, but it can be approximatively implemented with help of a specifically engineered resource state constructed from individual photons. We present experimental realization and thorough analysis of such quantum resource state, and confirm that the state does indeed possess properties of a state produced by unitary dynamics driven by cubic nonlinearity.

In a continuous-variable optical system, the Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill (GKP) qubit is a promising candidate for fault-tolerant quantum computation. To implement non-Clifford operations on GKP qubits, non-Gaussian operations are required. In this context, the implementation of a cubic phase gate by combining nonlinear feedforward with ancillary states has been widely researched. Recently, however, it is pointed out that the cubic phase gate is not the most suitable for non-Clifford operations on GKP qubits. In this work, we show that we can achieve linear optical implementation of non-Clifford …
We propose a deterministic, measurement-free implementation of a cubic phase gate for continuous-variable quantum information processing. In our scheme, the applications of displacement and squeezing operations allow us to engineer the effective evolution of the quantum state propagating through an optical Kerr nonlinearity. Under appropriate conditions, we show that the input state evolves according to a cubic phase Hamiltonian, and we find that the cubic phase gate error decreases inverse-quartically with the amount of quadrature squeezing, even in the presence of linear loss. We also show h…
We introduce three compact graph states that can be used to perform a measurement-based Toffoli gate. Given a weighted graph of six, seven or eight qubits, we show that success probabilities of 1/4, 1/2 and 1 respectively can be achieved. Our study puts a measurement-based version of this important quantum logic gate within the reach of current experiments. As the graphs are setup-independent, they could be realized in a variety of systems, including linear optics and ion-traps.
The recent proposal (M Planat and M Kibler, Preprint 0807.3650 [quantph]) of representing Clifford quantum gates in terms of unitary reflections is revisited. In this essay, the geometry of a Clifford group G is expressed as a BN-pair, i.e. a pair of subgroups B and N that generate G, is such that intersection H = B \cap N is normal in G, the group W = N/H is a Coxeter group and two extra axioms are satisfied by the double cosets acting on B. The BN-pair used in this decomposition relies on the swap and match gates already introduced for classically simulating quantum circuits (R Jozsa and A M…
We propose an experimental design for universal continuous-variable quantum computation that incorporates recent innovations in linear-optics-based continuous-variable cluster state generation and cubic-phase gate teleportation. The first ingredient is a protocol for generating the bilayer-square-lattice cluster state (a universal resource state) with temporal modes of light. With this state, measurement-based implementation of Gaussian unitary gates requires only homodyne detection. Second, we describe a measurement device that implements an adaptive cubic-phase gate, up to a random phase-spa…
We propose deterministic realizations of nonlinear phase gates by repeating non-commuting Rabi interactions feasible between a harmonic oscillator and {\em only} a single two-level ancillary qubit. We show explicitly that the key nonclassical features of the states after the ideal cubic phase gate and the quartic phase gate are reproduced faithfully by the engineered operators. This theoretical proposal completes the universal set of operators in continuous variable quantum computation.
Squeezing is a nonlinear Gaussian operation that is the key component in construction of other nonlinear Gaussian gates. In our implementation of the squeezing gate, the amount and the orientation of the squeezing can be controlled by an external driving signal with 1 MHz operational bandwidth. This opens a brand new area of dynamic Gaussian processing. In particular, the gate can be immediately employed as the feed-forward needed for the deterministic implementation of the quantum cubic gate, which is a key piece of universal quantum information processing.
As a milestone for general-purpose computing machines, we demonstrate that quantum processors can be programmed to efficiently simulate dynamics that are not native to the hardware. Moreover, on noisy devices without error correction, we show that simulation results are significantly improved when the quantum program is compiled using modular gates instead of a restricted set of standard gates. We demonstrate the general methodology by solving a cubic interaction problem, which appears in nonlinear optics, gauge theories, as well as plasma and fluid dynamics. To encode the nonnative Hamiltonia…
We propose a non-Gaussian continuous variable (CV) gate which is able to conditionally produce superposition of two "copies" of an arbitrary input state well separated in the coordinate and momentum plane - a Schrödinger cate state. The gate uses cubic phase state of an ancillary oscillator as a non-Gaussian resource, an entangling Gaussian gate, and homodyne measurement which provides nonunique information about the target system canonical variables, which is a key feature of the scheme. We show that this nonuniqueness manifests problems which may arise by extension of the Heisenberg picture …

Quantum non-Gaussian gate is a missing piece to the realization of continuous-variable universal quantum operations in the optical system. In a measurement-based implementation of the cubic phase gate, a lowest-order non-Gaussian gate, non-Gaussian ancillary states that has a property we call nonlinear squeezing are required. This property, however, has never been experimentally verified. In this paper, we generate a superposition between a vacuum state and a single photon state whose nonlinear squeezing are maximized by the optimization of the superposition coefficients. The nonlinear squeezi…
A measurement-induced continuous-variable logical gate is able to prepare Schrödinger cat states if the gate uses a non-Gaussian resource state, such as cubic phase state [I. V. Sokolov, Phys. Lett. A 384, 126762 (2020)]. Our scheme provides an alternative to hybrid circuits which use photon subtraction and (or) Fock resource states and photon number detectors. We reveal the conditions under which the gate conditionally prepares quantum superposition of two undistorted "copies" of an arbitrary input state that occupies a finite area in phase space. A detailed analysis of the fidelity between t…
We provide an explicit construction of a universal gate set for continuous-variable quantum computation with microwave circuits. Such a universal set has been first proposed in quantum-optical setups, but its experimental implementation has remained elusive in that domain due to the difficulties in engineering strong nonlinearities. Here, we show that a realistic three-wave mixing microwave architecture based on the SNAIL [Frattini et al., Appl. Phys. Lett. 110, 222603 (2017)] allows us to overcome this difficulty. As an application, we show that this architecture allows for the generation of …
Implementing quantum algorithms is essential for quantum computation. We study the implementation of three quantum algorithms by performing homodyne measurements on a two-dimensional temporal continuous-variable cluster state. We first review the generation of temporal cluster states and the implementation of gates using the measurement-based model. Alongside this we discuss methods to introduce non-Gaussianity into the cluster states. The first algorithm we consider is Gaussian Boson Sampling in which only Gaussian unitaries need to be implemented. Taking into account the fact that input stat…
Quantum measurement-induced gate based on entanglement with ideal cubic phase state used as a non-Gaussian resource is able to produce Shrödinger cat state in the form of two high fidelity ``copies'' of the target state on phase plane [N.I. Masalaeva, I.V. Sokolov, Phys. Lett. A 424, 127846 (2022)]. In this work we examine the effect of finite initial squeezing of the resource state on the gate performance. We present exact solution for the gate output state and demonstrate that there exists a degree of squeezing, available in experiment, such that the output cat state quality almost does not …
We investigate non-Gaussian states of light as ancillary inputs for generating nonlinear transformations required for quantum computing with continuous variables. We consider a recent proposal for preparing a cubic phase state, find the exact form of the prepared state and perform a detailed comparison to the ideal cubic phase state. We thereby identify the main challenges to preparing an ideal cubic phase state and describe the gates implemented with the non-ideal prepared state. We also find the general form of operations that can be implemented with ancilla Fock states, together with Gaussi…
We introduce witnesses for the average channel fidelity between a known target gate and an arbitrary unknown channel, for continuous-variable (CV) systems. These are observables whose expectation value yields a tight lower bound to the average channel fidelity in question, thus constituting a practical tool for certification of experimental CV gates. Our framework applies to a broad class of target gates. Here, we focus on three specific types of targets: multi-mode Gaussian unitary channels, single-mode coherent state amplifiers, and the single-mode (non-Gaussian) cubic phase gate, which is a…
We propose a general and systematic strategy to compile arbitrary quantum channels without using ancillary qubits, based on proximal policy optimization -- a powerful deep reinforcement learning algorithm. We rigorously prove that, in sharp contrast to the case of compiling unitary gates, it is impossible to compile an arbitrary channel to arbitrary precision with any given finite elementary channel set, regardless of the length of the decomposition sequence. However, for a fixed accuracy $ε$ one can construct a universal set with constant number of $ε$-dependent elementary channels, such that…
Universal quantum computation using photonic systems requires gates whose Hamiltonians are of order greater than quadratic in the quadrature operators. We first review previous proposals to implement such gates, where specific non-Gaussian states are used as resources in conjunction with entangling gates such as the continuous-variable versions of C-PHASE and C-NOT gates. We then propose ON states which are superpositions of the vacuum and the $N^{th}$ Fock state, for use as non-Gaussian resource states. We show that ON states can be used to implement the cubic and higher-order quadrature phas…

Integrated error-suppressed pipeline for quantum optimization of nontrivial binary combinatorial optimization problems on gate-model hardware at the 156-qubit scale
Flopping mode qubits in double quantum dots (DQDs) allow for coherent spin-photon hybridization and fast qubit gates when coupled to either an alternating external or a quantized cavity electric field. To achieve this, however, electronic systems rely on synthetic spin-orbit interaction (SOI) by means of a magnetic field gradient as a coupling mechanism. Here we theoretically show that this challenging experimental setup can be avoided in heavy-hole (HH) systems in germanium (Ge) by utilizing the sizeable cubic Rashba SOI. We argue that the resulting natural flopping mode qubit possesses highl…
Universal control over a bosonic degree of freedom is key in the quest for quantum-based technologies. Such universal control requires however the ability to perform demanding non-Gaussian gates -- namely, higher-than-quadratic interactions at the level of the bosonic operators. Here we consider a single ancillary two-level system, interacting with the bosonic mode of interest via a driven quantum Rabi model, and show that it is sufficient to induce the deterministic realization of a large class of Gaussian and non-Gaussian gates, which in turn provide universal bosonic control. This scheme re…
