We study azimuthal asymmetries in diffractive J/$ψ$ production in ultraperipheral heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and LHC energies using the color glass condensate effective theory. Our calculation successfully describes azimuthal averaged $J/ψ$ production cross section measured by STAR and ALICE. We further predict very large $\cos 2ϕ$ and $\cos 4ϕ$ azimuthal asymmetries for diffractive $J/ψ$ production both in UPCs at RHIC and LHC energies and in eA collisions at EIC energy. These novel polarization dependent observables may provide complementary information for constraining gluon transverse spatial distribution inside large nuclei. As compared to all previous analysis of diffractive $J/ψ$ production, the essential new elements integrated in our theoretical calculations are: the double-slit interference effect, the linear polarization of coherent photons, and the final state soft photon radiation effect.
We have extended the Interacting Gluon Model (IGM) to calculate diffractive mass spectra generated in hadronic collisions. We show that it is possible to treat both diffractive and non-diffractive events on the same footing, in terms of gluon-gluon collisions. A systematic analysis of available data is performed. The energy dependence of diffractive mass spectra is addressed. They show a moderate narrowing at increasing energies. Predictions for LHC energies are presented.
Following our recent paper on the calculations of diffractive quark jet production at hadron colliders, we present here the calculations of gluon jet production at hadron colliders in the two-gluon exchange parameterization of the Pomeron model. We use the helicity amplitude method to calculate the cross section formula. We find that for the gluon jet production the diffractive process is related to the differential off-diagonal gluon distribution function in the proton. We estimate the production rate for this process at the Fermilab Tevatron by approximating the off-diagonal gluon distributi…
We have applied the Interacting Gluon Model (IGM) to calculate diffractive mass spectra measured recently in e-p collisions at HERA. We show that it is possible to treat them in terms of gluon-gluon collisions in the same way as was done before for hadronic collisions. Analysis of available data is performed.
Massless diquark jet and gluon jet productions at large transverse momentum in the coherent diffractive processes at hadron colliders are studied in the two-gluon exchange parametrization of the Pomeron model. We use the helicity amplitude method to calculate the cross section formulas. We find that for the light quark jet and gluon jet production the diffractive process is related to t he differential off-diagonal gluon distribution function in the proton. We estimate the production rate for these processes at the Fermilab Tevatron by approximating the off-diagonal gluon distribution function…
Diffractive dijet photoproduction is proposed as a probe of the off-diagonal gluon distribution and its evolution. Predictions for the transverse momentum distribution of the jets are given. Differences with DGLAP evolution are highlighted.
Presented here is a study of the large p_T J/psi production in hard diffractive process by the pomeron exchange at the Fermilab Tevatron. We find that this process (p\bar p \to p+J/psi+X) can be used to probe the gluon content of the pomeron and to measure the gluon fraction of the pomeron. And the diffractive direct J/psi production can also provide another crucial test for the color-octet fragmentation mechanism. Using the renormalised pomeron flux factor D\approx 1/9, the single diffractive J/psi production cross section at large p_T (\geq 8GeV) is found to be of order of 0.01 nb, and the r…
The amplitude of diffractive $ρ$ (and open quark) leptoproduction on a polarized target is calculated in the leading log approximation of pQCD using the hadron-parton duality hypothesis. The spin-spin asymmetry is expressed in terms of the spin dependent gluon and quark structure functions in the small $x$ region. Therefore the $γ^*+p\to ρ+p$ reaction provides a promising tool to study the spin dependent gluon distribution $ΔG(x,q^2)$.
It is proposed, that color-singlet gluon-clusters can be formed in hadrons as a consequence of self-organized criticality (SOC) in systems of interacting soft gluons, and that the properties of such spatiotemporal complexities can be probed experimentally by examing inelastic diffractive scattering. Theoretical arguments and experimental evidences supporting the proposed picture are presented --- together with the result of a systematic analysis of the existing data for inelastic diffractive scattering processes performed at different incident energies, and/or by using different beam-particles…
Diffractive hard scattering is interpreted as the effect of soft gluon exchanges between the emerging energetic quarks and the nucleon's color field, resulting in an overall color singlet exchange. Summing multiple gluon exchanges to all orders leads to exponentiation and an amplitude in analytic form. Numerical evaluation reproduces the precise HERA data and gives new insights on the density of gluons in the proton.
We calculate spectrum of diffractively produced gluons in onium-heavy nucleus collisions at high energies. We show that it exhibits a characteristic dependence on nucleus atomic number A and energy/rapidity. We argue that this dependence offers a unique possibility for determining the low-x structure of nuclear matter. Applications to RHIC, LHC and EIC experimental programs are discussed.
Massless quark and antiquark jet production at large transverse momentum in the coherent diffractive processes at hadron colliders is calculated in the two-gluon exchange parametrization of the Pomeron model. We use the helicity amplitude method to calculate the cross section formula. We find that for the light quark jet production the diffractive process is related to the differential off-diagonal gluon distribution function in the proton. Order $α_s$-corrections to the diffractive structure functions $F_L^D$ and $F_2^D$ at large $Q^2$ and small $x$ are evaluated in the semiclassical approach, where the initial proton is treated as a classical colour field. The diffractive final state contains a fast gluon in addition to a quark-antiquark pair. Two of these partons may have large transverse momentum. Our calculations lead to an intuitive picture of deep-inelastic diffractive processes which is very similar to Bjorken's aligned-jet model. Both diffractive structure functions contain leading twist contributions from high-$p_{\perp…
We present a calculation of diffractive charm jet production at hadron colliders in perturbative QCD based on the two-gluon exchange model. Differing from the previous calculations, we abandon the use of the effective color-singlet vitual gluon simplification, and use the real gluon in the calculations for the partonic process. We find the final result is free of the linear singularities due to the small transverse momenta of the exchanged two gluons. In the leading logarithmic approximation (LLA) in QCD, this process is related to the off-diagonal gluon density in the proton. As a result, thi…
We discuss diffractive hadron leptoproduction in terms of skewed gluon distributions and within two-gluon exchange model. Connection of the two-gluon approach with skewed gluon distributions is found. The double spin asymmetries for longitudinally polarized leptons and transversely polarized protons in diffractive vector meson and $Q \bar Q$ production at high energies within the two-gluon model is analysed. The asymmetry predicted for meson production is found to be quite small. The $A_{lT}$ asymmetry for $Q \bar Q$ production is large and can be used to obtain information on the polarized sk…
We study the diffractive production of $q\bar{q}g$ jets with large transverse momenta in the region of large diffractive masses (small $β$). Cross sections for transverse and longitudinal photons are obtained in the leading log $1/x_{\fP}$ and log $1/β$ approximation, keeping all powers in log $k_t^2/Q^2$. We perform a numerical study and illustrate the angular distribution of the three jets. We also estimate the integrated diffractive three jet cross section and compare with the dijet cross section obtained before.
We use perturbative QCD, beyond the leading $\ln Q^2$ approximation, to show how measurements of diffractive $J/ψ$ production at HERA can provide a sensitive probe of the gluon density of the proton at small values of Bjorken $x$. We estimate both the effect of the relativistic motion of the $c$ and $\overline{c}$ within the $J/ψ$ and of the rescattering of the $c\overline{c}$ quark pair on the proton. We find that the available data for diffractive $J/ψ$ photoproduction can discriminate between the gluon distributions of the most recent sets of partons.
To test the model of the polarized gluon distribution $ΔG(x, Q^2)$ in the proton, we propose a new process, diffractive $Λ_c^+$ productions in polarized $pp$ reactions, which will be observed in the forthcoming RHIC and also the proposed HERA-$\vec {\rm N}$ experiments. The spin correlation between the target proton and the $Λ_c^+$ produced in the target fragmentation region largely depends on $ΔG(x, Q^2)$ and thus, the process is quite promising for testing the models of $ΔG(x, Q^2)$.
We propose exclusive diffractive dijet photoproduction as an ideal measure of the off-diagonal gluon distribution at high scales. We solve the off-diagonal evolution equations for the gluon and quark singlet over the full kinematic domain. We discuss the nature of the solutions of these equations, which embody both DGLAP and ERBL evolution. We give predictions for the transverse momentum distribution of the jets. In particular we quantify the enhancement arising from the evolution of the off-diagonal parton distributions.
The modifications induced in the calculation of the cross section of the diffractive process gamma gamma -> J/Psi J/Psi when the gluon propagator is changed are analyzed. Instead of the usual perturbative gluon propagator, alternative forms obtained using non-perturbative methods like Dyson-Schwinger equations are used to consider in a more consistent way the contributions of the infrared region. The result shows a reduction in the differential cross-section for low momentum transfer once compared with the perturbative result, to be confirmed with future experimental results from TESLA.
Based on the hard-scattering factorization which decomposes the diffractive structure function into a pomeron flux and a pomeron structure function, we study the single diffractive Lambda_c^+ production in polarized pp scattering: p + p -> p + Lambda_c^+ + X, which will be observed at forthcoming RHIC experiment. By analyzing the cross section and correlation of the spin polarization between the initial proton and produced Lambda_c^+, we found that the process is quite effective for testing both hard-scattering factorization and models of the polarized gluon distribution in the proton.
In this work, we perform a comparison of the employ of distinct gluon propagators with the experimental data in diffractive processes, $pp$ elastic scattering and light meson photo-production. The gluon propagators are calculated through non-perturbative methods, being justified their use in this class of events, due to the smallness of the momentum transfer. Our results are not able to select the best choice for the modified gluon propagator among the analyzed ones, showing that the application of this procedure in this class of high energy processes, although giving a reasonable fit to the e…
High-mass diffractive production of protons on the deuteron target is studied in the next-to-leading order (NLO) of the perturbative QCD in the BFKL approach. The non-trivial part of the NLO contributions coming from the triple interactions of the exchanged reggeons is considered. Analytic formulas are presented and shown to be infrared free and so ready for practical calculation.
Diffractive production of $J/Ψ$ particles by virtual photons on a proton target is studied with a view towards understanding two important corrections to the leading order result. First, the effect of Fermi motion of the heavy quarks is studied by performing a systematic expansion in the relative velocity, and a simple correction factor is derived. This is considerably less than estimated previously. Second, since the kinematics necessarily requires that non-zero momentum be transferred to the proton, off-forward gluon distributions are probed by the scattering process. To estimate the importa…
We consider the dependencies of spin asymmetries in the diffractive $J/Ψ$ and $Q \bar Q$ leptoproduction at HERA energies on the structure of the pomeron-proton coupling. It is shown that it is difficult to study the spin structure of the pomeron coupling with the proton from the $A_{ll}$ asymmetry. The $A_{lT}$ asymmetry is an appropriate object for this investigation.
We use the color-octet mechanism combined with the two gluon exchange model for the diffractive $J/ψ$ production in resolved photon processes. In the leading logarithmic approximation in QCD, we find that the diffractive $J/ψ$ production cross section is related to the off-diagonal gluon density of the proton, the gluon density of the photon and to the nonperturbative color-octet $^3 S_{1}^{(8)}$ matrix element of $J/ψ$. The cross section is found to be very sensitive to the gluon density of the photon. As a result, this process may provide a wide window for testing the two-gluon exchange mode…

The large transverse momentum muon pair and W boson productions in the quark initiated coherent diffractive processes at hadron colliders are discussed under the framework of the two-gluon exchange parametrization of the Pomeron model. In this approach, the production cross sections are related to the small-x off-diagonal gluon distribution and the large-x quark distribution in the proton (antiproton). By approximating the off-diagonal gluon distribution by the usual gluon distribution function, we estimate the production rates of these processes at the Fermilab Tevatron.
We consider the production of charm by real and virtual photons. Special attention is paid to diffractive charm production, which provides information on the gluonic content of the Pomeron. Our calculations are based on the gluon distributions of the CKMT-model, which is shown to lead to agreement with the data on open charm production in deep inelastic scattering. We compare predictions for diffractive charm production of different models for the distribution of gluons in the Pomeron. Experiments at HERA should be able to discriminate between them. Predictions for beauty production in diffrac…
This is the extensive follow-up report of a recent Letter in which the existence of self-organized criticality (SOC) in systems of interacting soft gluons is proposed, and its consequences for inelastic diffractive scattering processes are discussed. Direct photon production at large transverse momentum in the coherent diffractive processes at hadron colliders is calculated in the two-gluon exchange model. We find that the amplitude for the production process is related to the differential off-diagonal gluon distribution function in the proton. We estimate the production rate at the Fermilab Tevatron by approximately using the usual gluon distribution function. Because of the clean signature, this process can be used to detailed study the small-x physics, and the coherent diffractive processes at hadron colliders.
The $t$-dependence and the $(M_x^2/s)$-dependence of the double differential cross-sections for inelastic diffractive scattering off proton-target are discussed. Here $t$ stands for the four-momentum-transfer squared, $M_x$ for the missing mass, and $\sqrt{s}$ for the total c.m.s. energy. It is shown, that the space-time properties of the color-singlet gluon-clusters due to SOC, discussed in Part I, lead to simple analytical formulae for $d^2σ/dt d(M_x^2/s)$ and for $dσ/dt$, and that the obtained results are in good agreement with the existing data. Further experiments are suggested.
We review the application of perturbative QCD to diffractive processes. We introduce the two gluon exchange model to describe diffractive qq(bar) and qq(bar)g production in deep inelastic scattering. We study the triple Regge limit and briefly consider multiple gluon exchange. We discuss diffractive vector meson production at HERA both at t = 0 and large |t|. We demonstrate the non-factorization of diffractive processes at hadron colliders.
We study the diffractive electroproduction of quarkonia from quark-antiquark-gluon states in the photon wave function. We show that these states contribute to the leading-power and leading-logarithm level. We suggest the measurement of J/psi production via inelastic diffraction to study color-transparency and color-opacity effects in the diffractive gluon distribution.
We study spin asymmetries in diffractive $Q \bar Q$ and vector meson production which are sensitive to the spin-dependent part of the two-gluon-nucleon coupling. It is found that the $A_{ll}$ and $A_{lT}$ asymmetry in diffractive reactions can be used to study polarized gluon distributions of the proton.
We evaluate nuclear shadowing of the total cross section of charm particles production in DIS within the framework of the Gribov theory of nuclear shadowing using as input the recent QCD Pomeron parton density analysis of the HERA diffractive data. Assuming that the QCD factorization theorem is applicable to the charm production off nuclei we also calculate shadowing of the gluon densities in nuclei and find it sufficiently larg for heavy nuclei: $G_{A\sim 200}(x,Q^2)/AG_N(x,Q^2) \sim 0.45-0.5 \cdot (A/200)^{-0.15}$ for $x \sim 10^{-3÷-4}, Q^2 \sim 10 ÷40 GeV^2$ to influence significantly the …
The solution to the non-forward BFKL equation in the Leading Logarithmic approximation is expressed in terms of a sum of iterations of its kernel directly in transverse momentum and rapidity space. Several studies of the non-forward solution are performed both at the level of the gluon Green's function and for a toy cross-section, including an analysis of the diffusion properties as found in this approach. The method developed in this paper allows for a direct inspection of the momenta in the BFKL ladder, and can be applied to solving the non-forward BFKL equation to next-to-leading logarithmi…
Recently, a semiclassical approach to diffraction has been proposed, which treats the proton as a classical colour field. The present paper demonstrates that this approach is consistent with the concept of diffractive parton distributions. The diffractive quark and gluon distributions are expressed through integrals of non-Abelian eikonal factors in the fundamental and adjoint representation respectively. As a by-product, previously calculated diffractive cross sections for processes with a final state gluon are rederived in a simpler way.
The ``asymmetric'' matrix element <p-r|G...G|p> that appears in the pQCD description of hard diffractive electroproduction does not coincide with that defining the gluon distribution function f_g(x). I outline a pQCD formalism based on a concept of the double distribution F_g(x,y), which specifies the fractions xp, yr, (1-y)r of the initial proton momentum p and the momentum transfer r, resp., carried by the gluons. For $t \equiv r^2 =0$, r is proportional to p: $r = ζp$, and it is convenient to parameterize the matrix element <p-r|G...G|p> by an asymmetric distribution function ${\cal F}_ζ^g …
We discuss diffractive dissociation of gluons into heavy quark pairs. The particular mechanism is similar to the diffractive dissociation of virtual photons into quarks. The amplitude for the $g p \to Q \bar Q p$ is derived in the impact parameter and momentum space. The cross section for single diffractive $p p \to Q \bar Q p X$ is calculated as a convolution of the elementary cross section and gluon distribution in the proton. Integrated cross section and differential distributions in transverse momentum and rapidity of the charm and bottom quark and antiquark, etc. are calculated for the no…
We study coherent and incoherent diffractive hadron production in high energy quarkonium--heavy nucleus collisions as a probe of the gluon saturation regime of QCD. Taking this process as a model for pA collisions, we argue that the coherent diffractive gluon production, in which the target nucleus states intact, exhibits a remarkable sensitivity to the energy, rapidity and atomic number dependence. The incoherent diffractive gluon production is less sensitive to the details of the low-x dynamics but can serve as a probe of fluctuations in the color glass condensate. As a quantitative measure …
We investigate the possibility to measure the nonforward gluon distribution function by means of diffractively produced π^+π^- and K^+K^- pairs in polarized lepton nucleon scattering. The resulting cross sections are small and are dominated by the gluonic contribution. We find relatively large spin asymmetries, both for π^+π^- and for K^+K^- pairs.
We compute the cross section for exclusive double-diffractive gamma-gamma production at the Tevatron, $p{\bar p} \to p + γγ+ {\bar p}$, and the LHC. We evaluate both the gluon-gluon and quark-antiquark t-channel exchange contributions to the process. The observation of exclusive gamma-gamma production at the Tevatron will provide a check on the model predictions, and offer an opportunity to confirm the expectations for exclusive double-diffractive Higgs production at the LHC.
We present a calculation of open charm quark production in diffractive deep inelastic electron-proton scattering in a perturbative QCD framework. The cross section is proportional to the square of the gluon density and explicitly displays breaking of Regge factorization. Jet cross sections as well as the charm contribution to the diffractive structure function are calculated. As a consequence of the steep rise of the gluon density at small x the charm contribution to $F_2^{D}$ rises with decreasing x_P.
At high-energies the gluon-gluon fusion is the dominant mechanism of c \bar c production. This process was calculated in the NLO collinear as well as in the kt-factorization approaches in the past. In this presentation we concentrate on production of c \bar c pairs including several subleading mechanisms. In this context we use MRST-QED parton distributions which include photon as a parton in the proton as well as elastic photon distributions calculated in the equivalent photon approximation. We present distributions in the c quark (c antiquark) rapidity and transverse momenta and compare them…
We investigate the close connection between the quantum phase space Wigner distribution of small-$x$ gluons and the color dipole scattering amplitude, and propose to study it experimentally in the hard diffractive dijet production at the planned electron-ion collider. The angular correlation between the nucleon recoiled momentum and the dijet transverse momentum will probe the nontrivial correlation in the phase space Wigner distribution. This experimental study will not only provide us with three-dimensional tomographic pictures of gluons inside high energy proton, but also give a unique and …
We derive expressions for the gluon production cross sections in the single diffractive proton-nucleus scattering and DIS processes in a quasi-classical approximation. The resulting cross sections include the effects of all multiple rescatterings in the classical background field of the target proton or nucleus, which remains intact after the scattering. We also write down an expression for the inclusive gluon production cross section in DIS in the quasi-classical approximation.
We discuss quark-antiquark leptoproduction within a QCD two-gluon exchange model at small $x$. The double spin asymmetries for longitudinally polarized leptons and transversely polarized protons in diffractive $Q \bar Q$ production are analysed at eRHIC energies. The predicted $A_{lT}$ asymmetry is large and can be used to obtain information on the polarized generalized gluon distributions in the proton.
We perform a NLO QCD analysis of deep-inelastic scattering data, in which we account for absorptive corrections. These corrections are determined from a simultaneous analysis of diffractive deep-inelastic data. The absorptive effects are found to enhance the size of the gluon distribution at small x, such that a negative input gluon distribution at Q^2 = 1 GeV^2 is no longer required. We discuss the problem that the gluon distribution is valence-like at low scales, whereas the sea quark distribution grows with decreasing x. Our study hints at the possible importance of power corrections for Q^…
We propose a new model for a homogeneous description of hadron-hadron and hadron-nucleus collisions, the Gluon Exchange Model, fundamentally based on color octet (gluon) exchange. In proton-proton collisions we provide an exact description of the final state proton and neutron spectrum including the proton diffractive peak. In proton-nucleus reactions we find that the projectile proton diquark cannot survive in more than about half of multiple proton-nucleon processes and consequently must be very frequently disintegrated, leading to long transfers of baryon number over rapidity space.
Using the eikonal approximation, we show that inclusive gluon production is related to the scattering of a gluon-gluon dipole while diffractive gluon production in DIS is related to a two-$q\bar q$ dipole scattering amplitude. Hence diffractive photon dissociation cross-sections are observables that provide potential information on dipole correlations, which represent an open issue in high-energy QCD.
The diffractive production of open charm in deep-inelastic scattering is studied in the semiclassical approach which has been proposed recently. In this approach, the leading order process contains a charm quark pair and an additional gluon in the diffractive final state. The $p_{\perp}$-spectrum and the diffractive mass distribution are evaluated and compared with predictions based on perturbative two-gluon exchange calculations for charm quark pair production. It is shown that the $p_{\perp}$-spectrum provides a clear test of the underlying partonic process whereas the diffractive mass distr…
We analyse the dissociation of a photon in diffractive deep inelastic scattering in the kinematic regime where the diffractive mass is much bigger than the photon virtuality. We consider the dominant q\bar{q}g component keeping track of the transverse momentum of the gluon which can be measured as a final-state jet. We show that the diffractive gluon-jet production cross-section is strongly sensitive to unitarity constraints. In particular, in a model with parton saturation, this cross-section is sensitive to the scale at which unitarity effects become important, the saturation scale. We argue…
We consider double spin asymmetries for longitudinally polarized leptons and transversely polarized protons in diffractive vector meson and $Q \bar Q$ production at high energies within the two-gluon model. The asymmetry predicted for meson production is quite small. The $A_{lT}$ asymmetry for $Q \bar Q$ production contains two independent terms which are large and can be used to obtain information on the polarized gluon distributions in the proton.
We present a perturbative QCD calculation of diffractive $D_s$ production in charged current deep inelastic scattering. In the two-gluon exchange model, we analyze the diffractive process $νN \to μ^- N \Ds$, which may provide useful information for the gluon structure of nucleons and the diffraction mechanism in QCD. The cross section of diffractive $D_s$ production with $\xBj=0.005$-0.05 and $E_ν=50$ Gev is found to be $2.7\times10^{-5}$ pb. In spite of this small cross section, the high luminosity available at the $ν$-Factory in the future would lead to a sizable number of diffraction events…
We present a study of diffractive associated jpsi + gamma production at the Fermilab Tevatron and LHC based on the Ingelman-Schlein model for hard diffractive scattering and the factorization formalism of NRQCD for quarkonia production. We find that this process (p + pbar to p + jpsi + gamma + X) can be used to probe the gluon content of the Pomeron and test the assumption of diffractive hard scattering factorization. Using the renormalized Pomeron flux factor D simeq 0.11 (0.052), the single diffractive jpsi + gamma production cross section at 4<P_T< 10 GeV, -1<eta<1 region is found to be of …
We calculate spectra of secondary particles produced in process of single diffraction dissociation in the Model of Quark-Gluon Strings. For description of diffractive dissociation process we use the reggeon model where all legs of triple-reggeon diagrams are eikonalized. Numerical calculation shows that the model gives a good description of data on charged particles pseudorapidity distribution in $p\bar{p}$ single diffractive dissociation.
In this paper, it is shown that in hadron-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions, the main source for central exclusive diffractive Higgs production is photon-photon fusion. At the LHC energy, the total cross section for this process is about 0.6 pb (for proton-gold scattering), and 3.9 nb (for gold-gold collision) while the gluon-gluon fusion leads to the value of the cross section for CED Higgs production which is about 0.1 nb and 3.9 pb respectively.
It is pointed out, that color-singlet gluon clusters can be formed in hadrons as a consequence of self-organized criticality (SOC) in systems of interacting soft gluons, and that the properties of such spatiotemporal complexities can be probed experimentally by examing inelastic diffractive scattering. Theoretical arguments and experimental evidence supporting the proposed picture are presented. As a consequence of the space-time properties of the color-singlet gluon clusters due to SOC in gluon systems, a simple analytical formula for the differential cross section for inelastic diffractive h…
