Recently, a SU(4) $π$-flux Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice has been proposed to study the spin-orbit excitations of $α$-ZrCl$_3$ [Phys.~Rev.~Lett. 121.097201~(2017)]. Based on this model with a zigzag edge, we show the edge defects can induce edge flat bands that result in a SU(4) edge ferromagnetism. We develop an effective one-dimensional interaction Hamiltonian to study the corresponding SU(4) spin excitations. Remarkably, SU(4) spin excitations of the edge ferromagnet appear as a continuum covering the entire energy region rather than usual magnons. Through further entanglement entropy analysis, we suggest that the continuum consists of fractionalized spin excitations from the disappeared magnons, except for that from the particle-hole Stoner excitations. Moreover, in ribbon systems with finite widths, the disappeared magnons can be restored in the gap formed by the finite-size effect and the optical branch of the restored magnons are found to be topological nontrivial.
Bilayer honeycomb lattice, with inter-layer tunneling energy, has a parabolic dispersion relation, which causes the charge imbalance between two sublattices. Here, we investigate the metal-insulator and magnetic phase transitions on the strongly correlated bilayer honeycomb lattice by cellular dynamical mean-field theory combined with continuous time quantum Monte Carlo method. We find that different kinds of magnetic spontaneous symmetry breaking on dimer and non-dimer sites, cause a novel phase transition between normal anti-ferromagnet and layer anti-ferromagnet. We sketch the phase diagram…
Within the Hartree Fock- RPA analysis, we derive the spin wave spectrum for the weak ferromagnetic phase of the Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice. Assuming a uniform magnetization, the polar (optical) and acoustic branches of the spin wave excitations are determined. The bipartite lattice geometry produces a q-dependent phase difference between the spin wave amplitudes on the two sub-lattices. We also find an instability of the uniform weakly magnetized configuration to a weak antiferromagnetic spiraling spin structure, in the lattice plane, with wave vector Q along the Gamma-K direction,…
The one dimensional Hubbard model with nearest and (negative) next-nearest neighbour hopping has been studied with the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. A large region of ferromagnetism has been found for finite density and finite on-site interaction.
This is a self-contained review about ferromagnetism in the Hubbard model, which should be accessible to readers with various backgrounds who are new to the field. We describe Nagaoka's ferromagnetism and flat-band ferromagnetism in detail, giving all necessary backgrounds as well as complete (but elementary) mathematical proofs. By studying an intermediate model called long-range hopping model, we also demonstrate that there is indeed a deep relation between these two seemingly different approaches to ferromagnetism. We further discuss some attempts to go beyond these approaches. We briefly d…
Carrier-induced ferromagnetism is investigated in a diluted Hubbard model for ordered impurity arrangements. The delicate competition between particle-hole processes contributing to the spin couplings results in a rich variety of behaviour. The ferromagnetic transition temperature obtained within the spin-fluctuation theory is in good agreement with reported values for $\rm Ga_{1-x} Mn_x N$.
The Hubbard model with strong correlations is treated in the many-electron representation of Hubbard's operators. The regions of stability of saturated and non-saturated ferromagnetism in the n-U plane for the square and simple cubic lattices are calculated. The role of the bare density of states singularities for the magnetic phase diagram is discussed. A comparison with the results of previous works is performed.
The Hubbard model on fcc-type lattices is studied in the dynamical mean-field theory of infinite spatial dimensions. At intermediate interaction strength finite temperature Quantum Monte Carlo calculations yield a second order phase transition to a highly polarized, metallic ferromagnetic state. The Curie temperatures are calculated as a function of electronic density and interaction strength. A necessary condition for ferromagnetism is a density of state with large spectral weight near one of the band edges.
We study the Hubbard model on a hypercubic lattice with regard to the possibility of itinerant ferromagnetism. The Dynamical Mean Field theory is used to map the lattice model on an effective local problem, which is treated with help of the Non Crossing Approximation. By investigating spin dependent one-particle Green's functions and the magnetic susceptibility, a region with nonvanishing ferromagnetic polarization is found in the limit $U\to\infty$. The $δ$-T-phase diagram as well as thermodynamic quantities are discussed. The dependence of the Curie temperature on the Coulomb interaction and…
The extrapolation of small-cluster exact-diagonalization calculations is used to examine ferromagnetism in the one-dimensional Hubbard model with long-range and correlated hopping. It is found that the correlated hopping term stabilizes the ferromagnetic state for a wide range of electron interactions $U$ and electron concentrations $n$. The critical value of the interaction strength $U_c$ above which the ferromagnetic state becomes stable is calculated numerically and the ground-state phase diagram of the model is presented for physically the most interesting cases.
We study the existence of ferromagnetism in one dimensional Hubbard Model with on site interaction and nearest and next nearest neighbor hopping. Using the Hubbard I approximation, a self consistent equation for $<n_σ>$, the particle density with spin $σ$ is obtained. We find that ferromagnetism exists over a wide range of values of the next nearest neighbor hopping element t' when on-site interaction U is large. The phase diagram as a function of t'/t and the electron density $<n>$ has been obtained by numerically solving the self consistent equation. It is found that the maximum density at w…
We propose that spin-fluctuation-mediated spin-triplet superconductivity may be realized in repulsive Hubbard models with disconnected Fermi surfaces. The idea is confirmed for Hubbard models on triangular (dilute band filling) and honeycomb (near half-filling) lattices using fluctuation exchange approximation, where triplet pairing order parameter with f-wave symmetry is obtained. Possible relevance to real superconductors is suggested.
Based on the Cluster Perturbation solution of the Hubbard hamiltonian for a 2-D honeycomb lattice we present quasiparticle band structures of nanoribbons at half filling as a function of the on-site electron-electron repulsion. We show that at moderate values of e-e interaction ribbons with armachair shaped edges exhibit an unexpected semimetallic behavior, recovering the original insulating character only at larger values of $U$.
It is well known that the Hubbard model on a line graph has a flat band and ferromagnetic ground states in a certain density range. We show that for a Hubbard model on a line graph of a planar bipartite graph the ferromagnetic ground state is stable if one adds a special contribution to the kinetic energy which lifts the degeneracy of the lowest single particle state. Stability holds for sufficiently strong repulsion U. The model has extended single particle eigenstates, no degeneracy, and no band gap. It is therefore a good candidate for metallic ferromagnetism.
In this paper, the honeycomb Hubbard model in optical lattices is investigated using O(3) non-linear sigma model. A possible quantum non-magnetic insulator in a narrow parameter region is found near the metal-insulator transition. We study the corresponding dynamics of magnetic properties, and find that the narrow region could be widened by hole doping.
The phase diagram of the Hubbard model in an external magnetic field is examined by extrapolation of small-cluster exact-diagonalization calculations. Using a general expression for the hopping matrix elements ($t_{ij}\sim q^{|i-j|}$) the influence of long-range hopping (band asymmetry) on ferromagnetism in this model is studied. It is found that the long-range hopping (nonzero $q$) stabilizes ferromagnetism in an external magnetic field for $n > 1$. In the opposite limit $n \leq 1$ the fully polarized ferromagnetic state is generally suppressed with increasing $q$. The critical value of magne…
It is shown that the unique sign structure of the ground state of the Hubbard model on honeycomb lattice, which is shown to be insensitive to the trapped $Z_{2}$ gauge flux when the system is defined on a torus, may cause the absence of topological degeneracy on this bipartite system. Examples of variational Mott insulating state on the honeycomb lattice are given to illustrate the close relation between the sign structure of the ground state and the (absence of) topological degeneracy.
The small-cluster exact-diagonalization calculations and the projector quantum Monte Carlo method are used to examine the competing effects of geometrical frustration and interaction on ferromagnetism in the Hubbard model on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice. It is shown that the geometrical frustration stabilizes the ferromagnetic state at high electron concentrations ($n \gtrsim 7/4$), where strong correlations between ferromagnetism and the shape of the noninteracting density of states are observed. In particular, it is found that ferromagnetism is stabilized only for these values of frustrati…
We present different numerical calculations based on variational quantum Monte Carlo simulations supporting a ferromagnetic ground-state for finite and small hole densities in the two-dimensional infinite-$U$ Hubbard model. Moreover, by studying the energies of different total spin sectors, these calculations strongly suggest that the paramagnetic phase is unstable against a phase with a partial polarization for large hole densities $δ\sim 0.40$ with evidence for a second-order transition to the paramagnetic large doping phase.
In order to resolve the long-standing issue of how the itinerant ferromagnetism is affected by the lattice structure and Hund's coupling, we have compared various three-dimensional lattice structures in the single- and multiorbital Hubbard models with the dynamical mean-field theory with an improved quantum Monte Carlo algorithm that preserves the spin-SU(2) symmetry. The result indicates that {\it both} the lattice structure and the d-orbital degeneracy are essential for the ferromagnetism in the parameter region representing a transition metal. Specifically, (a) Hund's coupling, despite the …
The extrapolation of small-cluster exact-diagonalization calculations is used to examine ferromagnetism in the one-dimensional Hubbard model with a generalized type of hopping. It is found that the long-range hopping with power decaying hopping amplitudes ($t_{ij}\sim q^{|i-j|}$) stabilizes the ferromagnetic state for a wide range of electron interactions $U$ and electron concentrations $n$. The critical value of the interaction strength $U_c(q)$ above which the ferromagnetic state becomes stable is calculated numerically and the ground-state phase diagram of the model (in the $U$-$q$ plane) i…
The Hubbard model on the kagomé lattice has highly degenerate ground states (the flat lowest band) in the corresponding single-electron problem and exhibits the so-called flat-band ferromagnetism in the many-electron ground states as was found by Mielke. Here we study the model obtained by adding extra hopping terms to the above model. The lowest single-electron band becomes dispersive, and there is no band gap between the lowest band and the other band. We prove that, at half-filling of the lowest band, the ground states of this perturbed model remain saturated ferromagnetic if the lowest ban…
We consider the standard repulsive Hubbard model with a flat lowest-energy band for two one-dimensional lattices (diamond chain and ladder) as well as for a two-dimensional lattice (bilayer) at half filling of the flat band. The considered models do not fall in the class of Mielke-Tasaki flat-band ferromagnets, since they do not obey the connectivity conditions. However, the ground-state ferromagnetism can emerge, if the flat band becomes dispersive. To study this kinetic-energy-driven ferromagnetism we use perturbation theory and exact diagonalization of finite lattices. We find as a typical …
The problem of stability of saturated and non-saturated ferromagnetism in the Hubbard model is considered in terms of the one-particle Green's functions. Approximations by Edwards and Hertz and some versions of the self-consistent approximations based on the 1/z-expansion are considered. The account of longitudinal fluctuations turns out to be essential for description of the non-saturated state. The corresponding pictures of density of states are obtained. "Kondo" density-of-states singularities owing to spin-flip processes are analyzed. The critical electron concentrations for instabilities …
Motivated by the recent numerical simulations for doped $t$-$J$ model on the honeycomb lattice, we study superconductivity of singlet and triplet pairing on the honeycomb lattice Hubbard model. We show that a superconducting state with coexisting spin-singlet and spin-triplet pairings is induced by the antiferromagnetic order near half filling. The superconducting state we obtain has a topological phase transition that separates a topologically trivial state and a nontrivial state with Chern number two. Possible experimental realization of such a topological superconductivity is also discussed…
Recent experiments on the Co-based $d^7$ honeycomb materials BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4$)$_2$ and BaCo$_2$(PO$_4$)$_2$ have drawn renewed interest to XXZ models with competing interactions beyond the nearest neighbor exchange. While the case of dominant antiferromagnetic exchange has been extensively studied, the actual materials exhibit a ferromagnetic nearest neighbor exchange. Here we show that such a sign change of the dominant nearest neighbor coupling has substantial consequences on the phase diagram. In particular, the nature of the quantum disordered phase of interest changes from a plaquette val…
A slave boson representation for the degenerate Hubbard model is introduced. The location of the metal to insulator transition that occurs at commensurate densities is shown to depend weakly on the band degeneracy M. The relative weights of the Hubbard sub-bands depend strongly on M, as well as the magnetic properties. It is also shown that a sizable Hund's rule coupling is required in order to have a ferromagnetic instability appearing. The metal to insulator transition driven by an increase in temperature is a strong function of it.
We investigate the instability of the saturated ferromagnetic ground state (Nagaoka state) in the Hubbard model on various lattices in dimensions d=2 and d=3. A variational resolvent approach is developed for the Nagaoka instability both for U = infinity and for U < infinity which can easily be evaluated in the thermodynamic limit on all common lattices. Our results significantly improve former variational bounds for a possible Nagaoka regime in the ground state phase diagram of the Hubbard model. We show that a pronounced particle-hole asymmetry in the density of states and a diverging densit…
We investigate a mechanism to establish ground-state ferromagnetism in flat-band Hubbard systems based on a kind of {\it order-from-disorder} effect driven by dispersion. As a paradigm we consider a frustrated diamond chain, where for ideal diamond geometry the lowest one-electron band is flat, but the ground state remains paramagnetic for arbitrary on-site repulsion $U$. We focus on half filling of the flat band. By using numerical and analytical arguments we present the ground-state phase diagram for a distorted diamond chain, i.e., the former flat band becomes dispersive. Driven by the inte…
We obtain the phase-diagram of the half-filled honeycomb Hubbard model with density matrix embedding theory, to address recent controversy at intermediate couplings. We use clusters from 2-12 sites and lattices at the thermodynamic limit. We identify a paramagnetic insulating state, with possible hexagonal cluster order, competitive with the antiferromagnetic phase at intermediate coupling. However, its stability is strongly cluster and lattice size dependent, explaining controver- sies in earlier work. Our results support the paramagnetic insulator as being a metastable, rather than a true, i…
The infinite-dimensional Hubbard model is studied by means of a modified perturbation theory. The approach reduces to the iterative perturbation theory for weak coupling. It is exact in the atomic limit and correctly reproduces the dispersions and the weights of the Hubbard bands in the strong-coupling regime for arbitrary fillings. Results are presented for the hyper-cubic and an fcc-type lattice. For the latter we find ferromagnetic solutions. The filling-dependent Curie temperature is compared with the results of a recent Quantum Monte Carlo study.
In this paper we generalized the slave-particle technique to study the phase diagram of the Hubbard model on honeycomb lattice which may contain charge fluctuations. For large $U$, we have antiferromagnetic order phase. As we decrease $U$ below $U_{c2}\simeq 3t$, the system undergoes a first order phase transition into a gapped spin rotation invariant phase. Under a semiclassical approximation of the slave-particle approach, we find that such phase breaks the translation symmetry, the parity and the lattice rotation symmetry. However, beyond the semiclassical approximation, a $Z_2$ spin liquid…
Phase diagram of a Hubbard model for Majorana fermions on the honeycomb lattice is explored using a combination of field theory, renormalization group and mean-field arguments, as well as exact numerical diagonalization. Unlike the previously studied versions of the model we find that even weak interactions break symmetries and lead to interesting topological phases. We establish two topologically nontrivial phases at weak coupling, one gapped with chiral edge modes, and the other gapless with anti-chiral edge modes. At strong coupling a mapping onto a novel frustrated spin-${1\over 2}$ model …
We have performed large-scale density-matrix renormalization group studies of the lightly doped Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice on long three and four-leg cylinders. We find that the ground state of the system upon lightly doping is consistent with that of a superconducting state with coexisting quasi-long-range superconducting and charge density wave orders. Both the superconducting and charge density wave correlations decay as a power law at long distances with corresponding exponents $K_{sc}<2$ and $K_c<2$. On the contrary, the spin-spin and single-particle correlations decay exponen…
We investigate the influence of an interband exchange interaction on magnetism in a two-band Hubbard model. Our main emphasis lies on spin-flip scattering which is often neglected but is neccessary to retain the full rotational symmetry of the Hamiltonian. We find a striking dependence of the magnetization on the interband exchange coupling constant J and a substantial suppression of ferromagnetic order for a large range of values of J. The onset of an RKKY-like magnetic ordering mechanism is also observed.
We study the ferromagnetism due to orbital degeneracy in the Hubbard model in infinite dimensions. The model contains the intraorbital repulsion $U$, the interorbital repulsion $U^\prime$, the exchange $J$ (Hund coupling) and the pair hopping $J^\prime$, where all of them originate from the on-site Coulomb interaction. The ground state of the effective one-site problem was obtained by exact diagonalizations. At the 1/4-filling, we found two insulating phases; one is a ferromagnetic phase with alternating orbital order and the other is antiferromagnetic one with uniform orbital order. If electr…
The quasistatic approximation and equation-of-motion decoupling for the electron Green's functions are applied to trace the effect of electronic dispersion and electron correlations on the ferromagnetism of two-dimensional itinerant-electron systems. It is found that next-nearest-neighbor hopping t' is of crucial importance for ferromagnetism formation yielding the magnetic phase diagram which is strongly asymmetric with respect to half-filling. At small t' in the vicinity of half-filling the ferromagnetic phase region is restricted by the spin-density wave instability, and far from half-filli…
In this paper we investigate possible spin disordered phase in the Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice. Using a slave-particle theory that include the charge fluctuations, we find a meanfield spin disordered phase in a range of on-site repulsion $U$. The spin disordered state is described by gapped fermions coupled to compact U(1) gauge field. We study the confinement/deconfinement problem of the U(1) gauge theory due to the instantons proliferation. We calculate all allowed instanton terms and compute their quantum numbers. It is shown that the meanfield spin disordered phase is unstable. …
We construct a multi-band Hubbard model on the lattice obtained by "decorating" a closely packed $d$-dimensional lattice $\mathcal{M}$ (such as the triangular lattice) where $d\ge2$. We take the limits in which the Coulomb interaction and the band gap become infinitely large. Then there remains only a single band with finite energy, on which electrons are supported. Let the electron number be $N_\mathrm{e}=|\mathcal{M}|-N_\mathrm{h}$, where $|\mathcal{M}|$ corresponds to the electron number which makes the lowest (finite energy) band half-filled, and $N_\mathrm{h}$ is the number of "holes". It…
We study the possibility and stability of band-ferromagnetism in the single-band Hubbard model for the simple cubic (SC) lattice. A non-local self-energy is derived within a modified perturbation theory. Results for the spectral density and quasiparticle density of states are shown with special attention to the effects of k-dependence. The importance of non-local correlations for the fulfillment of the Mermin-Wagner theorem is our main result. A phase digram showing regions of ferromagnetic order is calculated for the three dimensional lattice. Besides, we show results for the optical conducti…
In the paper a possibility of metallic ferromagnetic state realization in a generalized Hubbard model with more complete accounting of electron-electron interactions, in particular, the correlated hopping and exchange interaction integrals is investigated. Recently obtained by means of mean-field approximation single electron energy spectrum is used for the description of finite temperature properties of the system. In the paper the expression for the critical temperature of ferromagnet-paramagnet transition is found, the behaviour of temperature dependencies of magnetization and paramagnetic …
The possible emergence of a spin liquid phase in the half-filled Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice; a simple model of graphene, is studied using the variational cluster approximation. We found that the critical interaction strength of a magnetic transition is slightly lower than that of the non-magnetic metal-to-insulator transition. Thus a semi-metallic state becomes a magnetic insulator as the interaction strength increases and a non-magnetic insulating state does not occur. Therefore a spin liquid state characterized by an insulating state without long range order, is not realized in t…
Layered antiferromagnetic spin density wave (LAF) state is one of the plausible ground states of charge neutral Bernal stacked bilayer graphene. In this paper, we use determinant quantum Monte Carlo method to study the effect of the electric field on the magnetic order in bilayer Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice. Our results qualitatively support the LAF ground state found in the mean field theory. The obtained magnetic moments, however, are much smaller than what are estimated in the mean field theory. As electric field increases, the magnetic order parameter rapidly decreases.
We derive a "Wannier-Hubbard" model consisting of an array of overlapping atomic orbitals interacting via a local Coulomb interaction. Transforming to an orthogonal Wannier basis set, the resulting Hamiltonian displays long range hopping and interactions, with new terms such as correlated hopping and ferromagnetic direct exchange, among others. We numerically study the one-dimensional version of the model at half-filling using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method, unveiling a rich phase diagram as a function of the interaction $U$ and the overlap $s$ with metallic, and ferrom…
We study the effect of the synthetic spin-orbit coupling in a two-component Bose-Hubbard model in one dimension by employing the density-matrix renormalization group method. A ferromagnetic long-range order emerges in both Mott insulator and superfluid phases resulting from the spontaneous breaking of the $Z_2$ symmetry, when the spin-orbit coupling term becomes comparable to the hopping kinetic energy and the inter-component interaction is smaller than the intra-one as well. This novel effect is expected to be detectable with the present realization of the synthetic spin-orbit coupling in exp…
We present a version of the Hubbard model with a gapless nearly-flat lowest band which exhibits ferromagnetism in two or more dimensions. The model is defined on a lattice obtained by placing a site on each edge of the hypercubic lattice, and electron hopping is assumed to be only between nearest and next nearest neighbor sites. The lattice, where all the sites are identical, is simple, and the corresponding single-electron band structure, where two cosine-type bands touch without an energy gap, is also simple. We prove that the ground state of the model is unique and ferromagnetic at half-fil…
Phase transition in a honeycomb lattice is studied by the means of the two dimensional Hubbard model and the exact diagonalization dynamical mean field theory at zero temperature. At low energies, the dispersion relation is shown to be a linear function of the momentum. In the limit of weak interactions, the system is in the semi-metal phase. By increasing the on site interaction a semi-metal to insulator transition takes place in the paramagnetic phase. Calculation of double occupancy shows such a phase transition is of the second order. The respective phase transition point and critical on-s…
We investigate the competition between charge-density-wave (CDW) states and a Coulomb interaction-driven topological Mott insulator (TMI) in the honeycomb extended Hubbard model. For the spinful model with on-site ($U$) and next-nearest-neighbor ($V_2$) Coulomb interactions at half filling, we find two peculiar six-sublattice charge-density-wave insulating states by using variational Monte Carlo simulations as well as the Hartree-Fock approximation. We observe that conventional ordered states always win with respect to the TMI. The ground state is given in the large-$V_2$ region by a CDW chara…
Unconventional ferromagnetism and superconductivity in the imbalanced kagome-lattice Hubbard model are investigated by the mean-field theory and determinant quantum Monte Carlo method. Due to the asymmetric band structure of kagome lattice, the spin-$z$ ferromagnetic order intrinsically exists in the system, which is first enhanced by the interaction, and then continuously destructed after reaching a maximum at a moderate interaction strength. In contrast, the $xy$-plane ferromagnetism develops only above a critical interaction, which is estimated to be $U_c/t=3.65 \pm 0.05$ by finite-size sca…
As a model for the B 2pz bands of MgB$_2$, a half-filled Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice is studied, and a possibility of an antiferromagnetism (AF) at the ground state is examined by Monte Carlo calculations as well as a random phase approximation method. On a single-layer honeycomb lattice, a paramagnetic to AF phase transition occurs at a finite value of the repulsion energy $U_c/t \simeq 3.6$, due to the loss of the density of states at the fermi level. On a layered honeycomb lattice, however, inter-layer hopping term creates a perfect nesting of the fermi surface, and leads the AF wi…
We show that as the result of the nesting property of the Fermi surface, the quarter-doped Hubbard model on honeycomb lattice is unstable with respect to the formation of a magnetic insulating state with nonzero spin chirality for infinitesimally small strength of electron correlation. The insulating state is found to be topological nontrivial and to have a quantized Hall conductance of $σ_{xy}=\frac{e^{2}}{h}$. We find the Fermi surface nesting is robust for arbitrary value of next-nearest-neighbor hopping integral. It is thus very possible that the quarter-doped graphene system will realize …
We use finite temperature strong coupling expansions to calculate thermodynamic properties of the Honeycomb-lattice SU(4) Hubbard model. We present numerical results for various properties including chemical potential, compressibility, entropy and specific heat as a function of temperature and density at several $U/t$ values. We study the onset of charge incompressibility and Mott gaps as the temperature is lowered at integer densities. In the incompressible Mott regime, the expansions are recast into a high temperature expansion for a generalized spin model with SU(4) symmetry, which is then …
Using large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we exactly solve a model of Fermions hopping on the honeycomb lattice with cluster charge interactions, which has been proposed as an effective model with possible application to twisted bilayer graphene near half-filling. We find an interaction driven semimetal to insulator transition to an insulating phase consisting of a valence bond solid with Kekulé pattern. Finite size scaling reveals that the phase transition of the semimetal to Kekulé valence bond solid phase is continuous and belongs to chiral XY universality class.
A detailed study of the paramagnetic to ferromagnetic phase transition in the one-band Hubbard model in the presence of binary alloy disorder is presented. The influence of the disorder (with concentration $x$ and $1-x$ of the two alloy ions) on the Curie temperature $T_{c}$ is found to depend strongly on electron density $n$. While at high densities, $n>x$, the disorder always reduces $T_c$, at low densities, $n<x$, the disorder can even \emph{enhance} $T_c$ if the interaction is strong enough. At the particular density $n=x$ (i. e. not necessarily at half filling) the interplay between disor…
Quantum phase transitions in the Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice are investigated in the variational cluster approximation. The critical interaction for the paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic phase transition is found to be in remarkable agreement with a recent large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulation. Calculated staggered magnetization increases continuously with $U$ and thus we find the phase transition is of a second order. We also find that the semimetal-insulator transition occurs at infinitesimally small interaction and thus a paramagnetic insulating state appears in a wide inter…
Inspired by recent discovery of correlated insulating states in twisted bilayer graphene (TBG), we study a two-orbital Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice with two electrons per unit cell. Based on the real-space density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulation, we identify a metal-insulator transition around $U_c/t=2.5\sim3$. In the vicinity of $U_c$, we find strong spin/orbital density wave fluctuations at commensurate wavevectors, accompanied by weaker incommensurate charge density wave (CDW) fluctuations. The spin/orbital density wave fluctuations are enhanced with increasing syst…
Spin waves in the zigzag ordered state on a honeycomb lattice are investigated within a Hubbard model with spin-dependent hopping terms. Roles of the emergent Kitaev, Heisenberg, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya, and symmetric-off-diagonal spin interactions are investigated on the stability of the zigzag order. While the DM interactions are found to destabilize the zigzag order, the secondary spin-dependent hopping terms (associated with structural distortions) are shown to strongly stabilize the zigzag order and account for magnetocrystalline anisotropy, easy axis, and spin wave gap. The calculated spin…
Ferromagnetism in the Hubbard model is investigated on sc, bcc, and fcc lattices using a systematic inverse-degeneracy ($1/{\cal N}$) expansion which incorporates self-energy and vertex corrections such that spin-rotation symmetry and the Goldstone mode are explicitly preserved. First-order quantum corrections to magnon energies are evaluated for several cases, providing a comprehensive picture of the interplay of lattice, band dispersion, and interaction effects on the stability of the ferromagnetic state with respect to both long- and short-wavelength fluctuations. Our results support the be…
