In this report, we present the technical details of our approach to the EPIC-KITCHENS-100 Unsupervised Domain Adaptation (UDA) Challenge for Action Recognition. The EPIC-KITCHENS-100 dataset consists of daily kitchen activities focusing on the interaction between human hands and their surrounding objects. It is very challenging to accurately recognize these fine-grained activities, due to the presence of distracting objects and visually similar action classes, especially in the unlabelled target domain. Based on an existing method for video domain adaptation, i.e., TA3N, we propose to learn hand-centric features by leveraging the hand bounding box information for UDA on fine-grained action recognition. This helps reduce the distraction from background as well as facilitate the learning of domain-invariant features. To achieve high quality hand localization, we adopt an uncertainty-aware domain adaptation network, i.e., MEAA, to train a domain-adaptive hand detector, which only uses very limited hand bounding box annotations in the source domain but can generalize well to the unlabelled target domain. Our submission achieved the 1st place in terms of top-1 action recognition accuracy, using only RGB and optical flow modalities as input.
We benchmark contemporary action recognition models (TSN, TRN, and TSM) on the recently introduced EPIC-Kitchens dataset and release pretrained models on GitHub (https://github.com/epic-kitchens/action-models) for others to build upon. In contrast to popular action recognition datasets like Kinetics, Something-Something, UCF101, and HMDB51, EPIC-Kitchens is shot from an egocentric perspective and captures daily actions in-situ. In this report, we aim to understand how well these models can tackle the challenges present in this dataset, such as its long tail class distribution, unseen environme…

In this report, we present the Baidu-UTS submission to the EPIC-Kitchens Action Recognition Challenge in CVPR 2019. This is the winning solution to this challenge. In this task, the goal is to predict verbs, nouns, and actions from the vocabulary for each video segment. The EPIC-Kitchens dataset contains various small objects, intense motion blur, and occlusions. It is challenging to locate and recognize the object that an actor interacts with. To address these problems, we utilize object detection features to guide the training of 3D Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), which can significantl…

With the recent surge in the research of vision transformers, they have demonstrated remarkable potential for various challenging computer vision applications, such as image recognition, point cloud classification as well as video understanding. In this paper, we present empirical results for training a stronger video vision transformer on the EPIC-KITCHENS-100 Action Recognition dataset. In this report, we present the technical details of our submission to the 2022 EPIC-Kitchens Unsupervised Domain Adaptation (UDA) Challenge. Existing UDA methods align the global features extracted from the whole video clips across the source and target domains but suffer from the spatial redundancy of feature matching in video recognition. Motivated by the observation that in most cases a small image region in each video frame can be informative enough for the action recognition task, we propose to exploit informative image regions to perform efficient domain alignment. Specifically, we first…

In this report, we describe the technical details of our submission to the EPIC-Kitchens-100 Unsupervised Domain Adaptation (UDA) Challenge in Action Recognition. To tackle the domain-shift which exists under the UDA setting, we first exploited a recent Domain Generalization (DG) technique, called Relative Norm Alignment (RNA). It consists in designing a model able to generalize well to any unseen domain, regardless of the possibility to access target data at training time. Then, in a second phase, we extended the approach to work on unlabelled target data, allowing the model to adapt to the t…

Action recognition is currently one of the top-challenging research fields in computer vision. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have significantly boosted its performance but rely on fixed-size spatio-temporal windows of analysis, reducing CNNs temporal receptive fields. Among action recognition datasets, egocentric recorded sequences have become of important relevance while entailing an additional challenge: ego-motion is unavoidably transferred to these sequences. The proposed method aims to cope with it by estimating this ego-motion or camera motion. The estimation is used to temporally…
Egocentric action anticipation consists in understanding which objects the camera wearer will interact with in the near future and which actions they will perform. We tackle the problem proposing an architecture able to anticipate actions at multiple temporal scales using two LSTMs to 1) summarize the past, and 2) formulate predictions about the future. The input video is processed considering three complimentary modalities: appearance (RGB), motion (optical flow) and objects (object-based features). Modality-specific predictions are fused using a novel Modality ATTention (MATT) mechanism whic…

We focus on multi-modal fusion for egocentric action recognition, and propose a novel architecture for multi-modal temporal-binding, i.e. the combination of modalities within a range of temporal offsets. We train the architecture with three modalities -- RGB, Flow and Audio -- and combine them with mid-level fusion alongside sparse temporal sampling of fused representations. In contrast with previous works, modalities are fused before temporal aggregation, with shared modality and fusion weights over time. Our proposed architecture is trained end-to-end, outperforming individual modalities as …

Although there has been significant research in egocentric action recognition, most methods and tasks, including EPIC-KITCHENS, suppose a fixed set of action classes. Fixed-set classification is useful for benchmarking methods, but is often unrealistic in practical settings due to the compositionality of actions, resulting in a functionally infinite-cardinality label set. In this work, we explore generalization with an open set of classes by unifying two popular approaches: few- and zero-shot generalization (the latter which we reframe as cross-modal few-shot generalization). We propose a new …

First person action recognition is becoming an increasingly researched area thanks to the rising popularity of wearable cameras. This is bringing to light cross-domain issues that are yet to be addressed in this context. Indeed, the information extracted from learned representations suffers from an intrinsic "environmental bias". This strongly affects the ability to generalize to unseen scenarios, limiting the application of current methods to real settings where labeled data are not available during training. In this work, we introduce the first domain generalization approach for egocentric a…

We introduce VISOR, a new dataset of pixel annotations and a benchmark suite for segmenting hands and active objects in egocentric video. VISOR annotates videos from EPIC-KITCHENS, which comes with a new set of challenges not encountered in current video segmentation datasets. Specifically, we need to ensure both short- and long-term consistency of pixel-level annotations as objects undergo transformative interactions, e.g. an onion is peeled, diced and cooked - where we aim to obtain accurate pixel-level annotations of the peel, onion pieces, chopping board, knife, pan, as well as the acting …

Event cameras are novel bio-inspired sensors, which asynchronously capture pixel-level intensity changes in the form of "events". Due to their sensing mechanism, event cameras have little to no motion blur, a very high temporal resolution and require significantly less power and memory than traditional frame-based cameras. These characteristics make them a perfect fit to several real-world applications such as egocentric action recognition on wearable devices, where fast camera motion and limited power challenge traditional vision sensors. However, the ever-growing field of event-based vision …

Secondly, we employ a temporal attention module to model temporal-wise inter-dependency. Thirdly, we employ the adversarial domain adaptation network to learn the general features between labeled s…
This paper proposes an interaction reasoning network for modelling spatio-temporal relationships between hands and objects in video. The proposed interaction unit utilises a Transformer module to reason about each acting hand, and its spatio-temporal relation to the other hand as well as objects being interacted with. We show that modelling two-handed interactions are critical for action recognition in egocentric video, and demonstrate that by using positionally-encoded trajectories, the network can better recognise observed interactions. We evaluate our proposal on EPIC-KITCHENS and Something…

Our interaction with the world is an inherently multimodal experience. However, the understanding of human-to-object interactions has historically been addressed focusing on a single modality. In particular, a limited number of works have considered to integrate the visual and audio modalities for this purpose. In this work, we propose a multimodal approach for egocentric action recognition in a kitchen environment that relies on audio and visual information. Our model combines a sparse temporal sampling strategy with a late fusion of audio, spatial, and temporal streams. Experimental results …

Modeling the visual changes that an action brings to a scene is critical for video understanding. Currently, CNNs process one local neighbourhood at a time, thus contextual relationships over longer ranges, while still learnable, are indirect. We present TROI, a plug-and-play module for CNNs to reason between mid-level feature representations that are otherwise separated in space and time. The module relates localized visual entities such as hands and interacting objects and transforms their corresponding regions of interest directly in the feature maps of convolutional layers. With TROI, we a…
We introduce Activity Graph Transformer, an end-to-end learnable model for temporal action localization, that receives a video as input and directly predicts a set of action instances that appear in the video. Detecting and localizing action instances in untrimmed videos requires reasoning over multiple action instances in a video. The dominant paradigms in the literature process videos temporally to either propose action regions or directly produce frame-level detections. However, sequential processing of videos is problematic when the action instances have non-sequential dependencies and/or …

In this work, we propose a motion embedding strategy known as motion codes, which is a vectorized representation of motions based on a manipulation's salient mechanical attributes. These motion codes provide a robust motion representation, and they are obtained using a hierarchy of features called the motion taxonomy. We developed and trained a deep neural network model that combines visual and semantic features to identify the features found in our motion taxonomy to embed or annotate videos with motion codes. To demonstrate the potential of motion codes as features for machine learning tasks…
