Originally proposed as a cosmological probe of the large-scale structure, line intensity mapping (LIM) also offers a unique window into the astrophysics of galaxy evolution. Adding to the astrophysical explorations of LIM technique that have traditionally focused on small, non-linear scales, we present a novel method to study the global star formation law using forthcoming data from large-scale baryonic acoustic oscillation (BAO) intensity mapping. Using the amplitude of the percent-level but scale-dependent bias induced by baryon fraction fluctuations on BAO scales, we show that combining auto- and cross-correlation power spectra of two (or more) LIM signals allows to probe the star formation law power index $\mathcal{N}$. We examine the prospect for mapping H$α$ and [OIII] lines across all scales, especially where imprints of the baryon fraction deviation exist, with space missions like SPHEREx. We show that although SPHEREx may only marginally probe $\mathcal{N}$ by accessing a modest number of large-scale modes in its 200 deg$^2$ deep survey, future infrared all-sky surveys reaching a comparable depth with an improved spectral resolution ($R \gtrsim 400$) are likely to constrain $\mathcal{N}$ to a precision of 10$-$30%, sufficient for distinguishing models with varying feedback assumptions, out to $z\sim4$ using BAO intensity mapping. Leveraging this effect, large, cosmic-variance-limited LIM surveys in the far future can scrutinize the physical connection between galaxy evolution and the large-scale cosmological environment, while performing stringent tests of the standard cosmological model.
We define Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) distances $\hat{d}_α(z, z_c)$, $\hat{d}_z(z, z_c)$, and $\hat{d}_/(z, z_c)$ that do not depend on cosmological parameters. These BAO distances are measured as a function of redshift $z$ with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data release DR12. From these BAO distances alone, or together with the correlation angle $θ_\textrm{MC}$ of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), we constrain the cosmological parameters in several scenarios. We find $4.3 σ$ tension between the BAO plus $θ_\textrm{MC}$ data and a cosmology with flat space and constant dark en…
We investigate the damping of the baryon acoustic oscillations in the matter power spectrum due to the quasinonlinear clustering and redshift-space distortions by confronting the models with the observations of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey luminous red galaxy sample. The chi-squared test suggests that the observed power spectrum is better matched by models with the damping of the baryon acoustic oscillations rather than the ones without the damping.
In this contribution we will discuss the non-linear effects in the baryon acoustic oscillations and present a systematic and controllable way to account for them within time-sliced perturbation theory.
Baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAOs) modulate the density ratio of baryons to dark matter across large regions of the Universe. We show that the associated variation in the mass-to-light ratio of galaxies should generate an oscillatory, scale-dependent bias of galaxies relative to the underlying distribution of dark matter. A measurement of this effect would calibrate the dependence of the characteristic mass-to-light ratio of galaxies on the baryon mass fraction in their large scale environment. This bias, though, is unlikely to significantly affect measurements of BAO peak positions.
The environmental dependence of galaxy clustering encodes information about the physical processes governing the growth of cosmic structure. We analyze the baryon acoustic peak as a function of environment in the galaxy correlation function of the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey CMASS sample. Dividing the sample into three subsets by smoothed local overdensity, we detect acoustic peaks in the six separate auto-correlation and cross-correlation functions of the sub-samples. Fitting models to these correlation functions, calibrated by mock galaxy and dark matter catalogues, we find that …
(abridged) The scale of the acoustic oscillation of baryons at the baryon-photon decoupling is imprinted on the spatial distribution of galaxies in the Universe, known as the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO). The correlation functions and power spectrum are used as a central tool for the studies on the BAO analysis. In this work, we analyzed the spatial distribution of galaxies with a method from the topological data analysis (TDA), in order to detect and examine the BAO signal in the galaxy distribution. The TDA provides a method to treat various types of "holes" in point set data, by constr…
We define Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) observables $\hat{d}_α(z, z_c)$, $\hat{d}_z(z, z_c)$, and $\hat{d}_/(z, z_c)$ that do not depend on any cosmological parameter. From each of these observables we recover the BAO correlation length $d_\textrm{BAO}$ with its respective dependence on cosmological parameters. These BAO observables are measured as a function of redshift $z$ with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data release DR12. From the BAO measurements alone, or together with the correlation angle $θ_\textrm{MC}$ of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), we constrain the curvature p…
Future baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) surveys will survey very large volumes, covering wide ranges in redshift. We derive a set of redshift weights to compress the information in the redshift direction to a small number of modes. We suggest that such a compression preserves almost all of the signal for most cosmologies, while giving high signal-to-noise measurements for each combination. We present some toy models and simple worked examples. As an intermediate step, we give a precise meaning to the "effective redshift" of a BAO measurement.
We measure the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) observables $\hat{d}_α(z, z_c)$, $\hat{d}_z(z, z_c)$, and $\hat{d}_/(z, z_c)$ as a function of redshift $z$ in the range 0.1 to 0.7 with Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data release DR13. These observables are independent and satisfy a consistency relation that provides discrimination against miss-fits due to background fluctuations. From these measurements and the correlation angle $θ_\textrm{MC}$ of fluctuations of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) we obtain $Ω_k = -0.015 \pm 0.030$, $Ω_{\textrm{DE}} + 2.2 Ω_k = 0.717 \pm 0.004$ and $w_1 =…
In linear perturbation theory, all information about the growth of structure is contained in the Green's function, or equivalently, transfer function. These functions are generally computed using numerical codes or by phenomenological fitting formula anchored in accurate analytic results in the limits of large and small scale. Here we present a framework for analytically solving all scales, in particular the intermediate scales relevant for the baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO). We solve for the Green's function and transfer function using spherically-averaged overdensities and the approximat…
We show that it is possible to build effective matter density power spectra in tomographic cosmic shear observations that exhibit the Baryonic Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) features once a nulling transformation has been applied to the data. The precision with which the amplitude and position of these features can be reconstructed is quantified in terms of sky coverage, intrinsic shape noise, median source redshift and number density of sources. BAO detection in Euclid or LSST like wide surveys will be possible with a modest signal-to-noise ratio. It would improve dramatically for slightly deepe…
We present a measurement of the anisotropic and isotropic Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) from the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey Data Release 14 quasar sample with optimal redshift weights. Applying the redshift weights improves the constraint on the BAO dilation parameter $α(z_{\rm eff})$ by 17\%. We reconstruct the evolution history of the BAO distance indicators in the redshift range of $0.8<z<2.2$. This paper is part of a set that analyses the eBOSS DR14 quasar sample.
The galaxy bispectrum, measuring excess clustering of galaxy triplets, offers a probe of dark energy via baryon acoustic oscillations (BAOs). However up to now it has been severely underused due to the combinatorically explosive number of triangles. Here we exploit interference in the bispectrum to identify triangles that amplify BAOs. This approach reduces the computational cost of estimating covariance matrices, offers an improvement in BAO constraints equivalent to lengthening BOSS by 30%, and simplifies adding bispectrum BAO information to future large-scale redshift survey analyses.
The baryonic acoustic peak in the correlation function of galaxies and galaxy clusters provides a standard ruler to probe the space-time geometry of the Universe, jointly constraining the angular diameter distance and the Hubble expansion rate. Moreover, non-linear effects can systematically shift the peak position, giving us the opportunity to exploit this clustering feature also as a dynamical probe. We investigate the possibility of detecting interactions in the dark sector through an accurate determination of the baryonic acoustic scale. Making use of the public halo catalogues extracted f…
In recent years, the autocorrelation of the hydrogen Lyman-α forest has been used to observe the baryon acoustic peak at redshift 2 < z < 3.5 using tens of thousands of QSO spectra from the BOSS survey. However, the interstellar medium of the Milky-Way introduces absorption lines into the spectrum of any extragalactic source. These lines, while weak and undetectable in a single BOSS spectrum, could potentially bias the cosmological signal. In order to examine this, we generate absorption line maps by stacking over a million spectra of galaxies and QSOs. We find that the systematics introduced …
The fitting formula for the location of the first acoustic peak in the matter power spectrum is revised. We discuss the physics that leads to baryon acoustic oscillations: the recombination history, the tight coupling approximation and the velocity overshoot effect. A new fitting formula is proposed, which is in accordance within 5% with numerical results for a suitable range of cosmological parameters, whereas previous results yield deviations of up to 20%. The crucial improvement turns out to be the accuracy of the recombination history.
We study the non-linear behavior of the baryon acoustic oscillation in the power spectrum and the correlation function by decomposing the dark matter perturbations into the short- and long-wavelength modes. The evolution of the dark matter fluctuations can be described as a global coordinate transformation caused by the long-wavelength displacement vector acting on short-wavelength matter perturbation undergoing non-linear growth. Using this feature, we investigate the well known cancellation of the high-$k$ solutions in the standard perturbation theory. While the standard perturbation theory …
Percent-level measurements of the comoving baryon acoustic scale standard ruler can be used to break degeneracies in parameter constraints from the CMB alone. The sound horizon at the epoch of baryon drag is often used as a proxy for the scale of the peak in the matter density correlation function, and can conveniently be calculated quickly for different cosmological models. However, the measurements are not directly constraining this scale, but rather a measurement of the full correlation function, which depends on the detailed evolution through decoupling. We assess the level of reliability …
The tight-coupling approximation (TCA) used to describe the early dynamics of the baryons-photons system is systematically built to higher orders in the inverse of the interaction rate. This expansion can be either used to grasp the physical effects by deriving simple analytic solutions or to obtain a form of the system which is stable numerically at early times. In linear cosmological perturbations, we estimate numerically its precision, and we discuss the implications for the baryons acoustic oscillations. The TCA can be extended to the second order cosmological perturbations, and in particu…
We investigate the possibility of detecting baryon acoustic oscillation features in the cosmic matter distribution by 3d weak lensing. Baryon oscillations are inaccessible even to weak lensing tomography because of wide line-of-sight weighting functions and require a specialized approach via 3d shear estimates. We quantify the uncertainty of estimating the matter spectrum amplitude at the baryon oscillations wave vectors by a Fisher-matrix approach with a fixed cosmology and show in this way that future weak lensing surveys such as EUCLID and DES are able to pick up the first four wiggles, wit…
Baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) are a powerful probe of the expansion history of the universe, which can tell us about the nature of dark energy. In order to accurately characterize the dark energy equation of state using BAO, we must understand the effects of both nonlinearities and redshift space distortions on the location and shape of the acoustic peak. In a previous paper we introduced a novel approach to 2nd order perturbation theory in configuration space using the Zel'dovich approximation, and presented a simple result for the first nonlinear term of the correlation function. In thi…
We determine a constraint on the growth factor by measuring the damping of the baryon acoustic oscillations in the matter power spectrum using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey luminous red galaxy sample. The damping of the BAO is detected at the one sigma level. We obtain σ_8D_1(z=0.3) = 0.42^{+0.34}_{-0.28} at the 1σstatistical level, where σ_8 is the root mean square overdensity in a sphere of radius 8h^{-1}Mpc and D_1(z) is the growth factor at redshift z. The above result assumes that other parameters are fixed and the cosmology is taken to be a spatially flat cold dark matter universe with th…
New statistical method is proposed to coherently combine Baryon Acoustic Oscillation statistics (BAO) and peculiar velocity measurements exploiting decomposed density-density and velocity-velocity spectra in real space from the observed redshift distortions in redshift space, 1) to achieve stronger dark energy constraints, σ(w)=0.06 and σ(w_a)=0.20, which are enhanced from BAO or velocity measurements alone, and 2) to cross-check consistency of dark energy constraints from two different approaches; BAO as geometrical measurements and peculiar velocity as large scale structure formation observa…
In the non-relativistic regime, pertinent to the large scale structure of the Universe, the leading effect of a long-wavelength perturbation $δ(λ_L)$ on short distance physics is a uniform acceleration $\propto λ_L δ(λ_L)$. Typically, this has no effect on statistical averages at equal time since a uniform acceleration results in a uniform translation -- a reasoning that has been formalized as a "consistency condition" on the cosmological correlation functions. This naive expectation fails in the presence of the baryon acoustic feature provided $λ_L < \ell_{\rm BAO}$. We derive the squeezed li…
We investigate constraints on the Hubble constant ($H_0$) using Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) and baryon density measurements from Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN). We start by investigating the tension between galaxy BAO measurements and those using the Lyman-$α$ forest, within a Bayesian framework. Using the latest results from eBOSS DR14 we find that the probability of this tension being statistical is $\simeq6.3\%$ assuming flat $Λ$CDM. We measure $H_0 = 67.6\pm1.1$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$, with a weak dependence on the BBN prior used, in agreement with results from Planck Cosmic Microwa…
The baryonic acoustic oscillations are features in the spatial distribution of the galaxies which, if observed at different epochs, probe the nature of the dark energy. In order to be able to measure the parameters of the dark energy equation of state to high precision, a huge sample of galaxies has to be used. The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope will survey the optical sky with 6 filters from 300nm and 1100nm, such that a catalog of galaxies with photometric redshifts will be available for dark energy studies. In this article, we will give a rough estimate of the impact of the photometric red…
We present measurements of the angular diameter distance to and Hubble parameter at z=0.57 from the measurement of the baryon acoustic peak in the correlation of galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey. Our analysis is based on a sample from Data Release 9 of 264,283 galaxies over 3275 square degrees in the redshift range 0.43<z<0.70. We use two different methods to provide robust measurement of the acoustic peak position across and along the line of sight in order to measure the cosmological distance scale. We find D_A(0.57) = 1408 +/- 45 Mpc and…
We compare supernovae and Baryon Acoustic Oscillations data to the predictions of a cosmological model of interacting dark matter and dark energy. This theoretical model can be derived from the effective field theory of Einstein-Cartan gravity with two scaling exponents $δ_G$ and $δ_Λ$, related to the interaction between dark matter and dark energy. We perform a $χ^2$ fit to the data to compare and contrast it with the standard $Λ$CDM model. We then explore the range of parameter of the model which gives a better $χ^2$ than the standard cosmological model. All those results lead to tight const…
We use hydrodynamic cosmological simulations in a (600 Mpc)^3 volume to study the observability of baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) in the intergalactic medium as probed by Lyman alpha forest (LAF) absorption. The large scale separation between the wavelength of the BAO mode (~150 Mpc) and the size of LAF absorbers (~100 kpc) makes this a numerically challenging problem. We report on several 2048^3 simulations of the LAF using the ENZO code. We adopt WMAP5 concordance cosmological parameters and power spectrum including BAO perturbations. 5000 synthetic HI absorption line spectra are generat…
We report five measurements of the transverse baryonic acoustic scale, $θ_{BAO}$, obtained from the angular two-point correlation function calculation for Luminous Red Galaxies of the eleventh data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Each measurement has been obtained by considering a thin redshift shell ($δz = 0.01$ and $0.02$) in the interval $ z \in [0.565, 0.660] $, which contains a large density of galaxies ($\sim 20,000$ galaxies/redshift shell). Differently from the three-dimensional Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) measurements, these data points are obtained almost model…
The measurement of Baryonic Acoustic Oscillations from galaxy surveys is well known to be a robust and powerful tool to constrain dark energy. This method relies on the knowledge of the size of the acoustic horizon at radiation drag derived from Cosmic Microwave Background Anisotropy measurements. In this paper we quantify the effect of non-standard initial conditions in the form of an isocurvature component on the determination of dark energy parameters from future BAO surveys. In particular, if there is an isocurvature component (at a level still allowed by present data) but it is ignored in…
The baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) feature in the distribution of galaxies has been widely studied as an excellent standard ruler for probing cosmic distances and expansion history, and hence dark energy. In contrast, the amplitude of the BAO feature has received relatively little study, mainly due to limited signal-to-noise, and complications due to galaxy biasing, effects of non-linear clustering and dependence on several cosmological parameters. As expected, the amplitude of the BAO feature is sensitive to the cosmic baryon fraction: for standard radiation content, the cosmic microwave b…
We propose a new and highly model-independent test of cosmic acceleration by comparing observations of the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) scale at low and intermediate redshifts: we derive a new inequality relating BAO observables at two distinct redshifts, which must be satisfied for any reasonable homogeneous non-accelerating model, but is violated by models similar to LambdaCDM, due to acceleration in the recent past. This test is fully independent of the theory of gravity (GR or otherwise), the Friedmann equations, CMB and supernova observations: the test assumes only the Cosmological P…
We analyse the largest spectroscopic samples of galaxy clusters to date, and provide observational constraints on the distance-redshift relation from baryon acoustic oscillations. The cluster samples considered in this work have been extracted from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey at three median redshifts, $z=0.2$, $z=0.3$, and $z=0.5$. The number of objects is $12910$, $42215$, and $11816$, respectively. We detect the peak of baryon acoustic oscillations for all the three samples. The derived distance constraints are: $r_s/D_V(z=0.2)=0.18 \pm 0.01$, $r_s/D_V(z=0.3)=0.124 \pm 0.004$ and $r_s/D_V(…
We present measurements of the baryon acoustic peak at redshifts z = 0.44, 0.6 and 0.73 in the galaxy correlation function of the final dataset of the WiggleZ Dark Energy Survey. We combine our correlation function with lower-redshift measurements from the 6-degree Field Galaxy Survey and Sloan Digital Sky Survey, producing a stacked survey correlation function in which the statistical significance of the detection of the baryon acoustic peak is 4.9-sigma relative to a zero-baryon model with no peak. We fit cosmological models to this combined baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) dataset comprisi…
We propose a new way of looking at the Baryon Acoustic Oscillations in the Large Scale Structure clustering correlation function. We identify a scale s_LP that has two fundamental features: its position is insensitive to non-linear gravity, redshift space distortions, and scale-dependent bias at the 0.5% level; it is geometrical, i.e. independent of the power spectrum of the primordial density fluctuation parameters. These two properties together make s_LP, called the "linear point", an excellent cosmological standard ruler. The linear point is also appealing because it is easily identified ir…
Precise measurements of the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) scale as a standard ruler in the clustering pattern of large-scale structure is a central goal of current and future galaxy surveys. The BAO peak may be sharpened using the technique of density-field reconstruction, in which the bulk displacements of galaxies are estimated using a Zel'dovitch approximation. We use numerical simulations to demonstrate how the accuracy of this approximation depends strongly on local environment, and how this information may be used to construct an improved BAO measurement through environmental re-weig…
We investigate the effect of supersonic relative velocities between baryons and dark matter, recently shown to arise generically at high redshift, on baryonic acoustic oscillation (BAO) measurements at low redshift. The amplitude of the relative velocity effect at low redshift is model-dependent, but can be parameterized by using an unknown bias. We find that if unaccounted, the relative velocity effect can shift the BAO peak position and bias estimates of the dark energy equation-of-state due to its non-smooth, out-of-phase oscillation structure around the BAO scale. Fortunately, the relative…
It has been suggested by Chen and Lai that the proper description of the large scale structure formation of the universe in the post-reionization era, which is conventionally characterized via gas hydrodynamics, should include the plasma collective effects in the formulation. Specifically, it is the combined pressure from the baryon thermal motions and the residual long-range electrostatic potentials resulted from the imperfect Debye shielding, that fights against the gravitational collapse. As a result, at small-scales the baryons would oscillate at the ion-acoustic, instead of the convention…
We present a picture of the matter bispectrum in a novel "interferometric" basis designed to highlight interference of the baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) in the power spectra composing it. Triangles where constructive interference amplifies BAO provide stronger cosmic distance constraints than triangles with destructive interference. We show that the amplitude of the BAO feature in the full cyclically summed bispectrum can be decomposed into simpler contributions from single terms or pairs of terms in the perturbation theory bispectrum, and that across large swathes of our parameter space …
The Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) in the large-scale structure of the universe leave a distinct peak in the two-point correlation function of the matter distribution. That acoustic peak is smeared and shifted by bulk flows and non-linear evolution. However, it has been shown that it is still possible to sharpen the peak and remove its shift by undoing the effects of the bulk flows. We propose an improvement to the standard acoustic peak reconstruction. Contrary to the standard approach, the new scheme has no free parameters, treats the large-scale modes consistently, and uses optimal filt…
We present a set of ultra-large particle-mesh simulations of the LyA forest targeted at understanding the imprint of baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) in the inter-galactic medium. We use 9 dark matter only simulations which can, for the first time, simultaneously resolve the Jeans scale of the intergalactic gas while covering the large volumes required to adequately sample the acoustic feature. Mock absorption spectra are generated using the fluctuating Gunn-Peterson approximation which have approximately correct flux probability density functions (PDFs) and small-scale power spectra. On lar…
We use time-sliced perturbation theory (TSPT) to give an accurate description of the infrared non-linear effects affecting the baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAO) present in the distribution of matter at very large scales. In TSPT this can be done via a systematic resummation that has a simple diagrammatic representation and does not involve uncontrollable approximations. We discuss the power counting rules and derive explicit expressions for the resummed matter power spectrum up to next-to leading order and the bispectrum at the leading order. The two-point correlation function agrees well w…
For about a decade, the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) peak at about 105 Mpc/h has provided a standard ruler test of the LCDM cosmological model, a member of the Friedmann--Lemaitre--Robertson--Walker (FLRW) family of cosmological models---according to which comoving space is rigid. However, general relativity does not require comoving space to be rigid. During the virialisation epoch, when the most massive structures form by gravitational collapse, it should be expected that comoving space evolves inhomogeneous curvature as structure grows. The BAO peak standard ruler should also follow th…
In an age of large astronomical dateset and severe cosmological tensions, the case for model independent analyses is compelling. We present a set of 14 baryon acoustic oscillations measurements in thin redshift shells with 3% precision that were obtained by analyzing BOSS DR12 and eBOSS DR16 galaxies in the redshift range $0.32<z<0.66$. Thanks to the use of thin shells, the analysis is carried out using just redshifts and angles so that the fiducial model is only introduced when considering the mock catalogs, necessary for the covariance matrix estimation and the pipeline validation. We compar…
In this paper we present a new method to extract cosmological parameters using the radial scale of the Baryon Acoustic Oscillations as a standard ruler in deep galaxy surveys. The method consists in an empirical parametrization of the radial 2-point correlation function, which provides a robust and precise extraction of the sound horizon scale. Moreover, it uses data from galaxy surveys in a manner that is fully cosmology independent and therefore, unbiased. A study of the main systematic errors and the validation of the method in cosmological simulations are also presented, showing that the m…
The Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) imprinted a characteristic correlation length in the large-scale structure of the universe that can be used as a standard ruler for mapping out the cosmic expansion history. Here, we discuss the application of the angular two-point correlation function, $w(θ)$, to a sample of luminous red galaxies of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and derive two new measurements of the BAO angular scale at $z = 0.235$ and $z = 0.365$. Since noise and systematics may hinder the identification of the BAO signature in the $w - θ$ plane, we also introduce a potential new…
We consider recently proposed higher order gravity models where the action is built from the Einstein-Hilbert action plus a function f(G) of the Gauss-Bonnet invariant. The models were previously shown to pass physical acceptability conditions as well as solar system tests. In this paper, we compare the models to combined data sets of supernovae, baryon acoustic oscillations, and constraints from the CMB surface of last scattering. We find that the models provide fits to the data that are close to those of the LCDM concordance model. The results provide a pool of higher order gravity models th…
In the standard model of cosmology, the Universe is static in comoving coordinates; expansion occurs homogeneously and is represented by a global scale factor. The baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) peak location is a statistical tracer that represents, in the standard model, a fixed comoving-length standard ruler. Recent gravitational collapse should modify the metric, rendering the effective scale factor, and thus the BAO standard ruler, spatially inhomogeneous. Using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, we show to high significance (P < 0.001) that the spatial compression of the BAO peak location i…
We introduce a new statistic omega_l for measuring and analyzing large-scale structure and particularly the baryon acoustic oscillations. omega_l is a band-filtered, configuration space statistic that is easily implemented and has advantages over the traditional power spectrum and correlation function estimators. Unlike these estimators, omega_l can localize most of the acoustic information into a single dip at the acoustic scale while also avoiding sensitivity to the poorly constrained large scale power (i.e., the integral constraint) through the use of a localized and compensated filter. It …
We present the first high significance detection ($4.1σ$) of the Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) feature in the galaxy bispectrum of the twelfth data release (DR12) of the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) CMASS sample ($0.43 \leq z \leq 0.7$). We measured the scale dilation parameter, $α$, using the power spectrum, bispectrum, and both simultaneously for DR12, plus 2048 MultiDark-PATCHY mocks in the North and South Galactic Caps (NGC and SGC, respectively), and the volume weighted averages of those two samples (N+SGC). The fitting to the mocks validated our analysis pipeline, …
We develop a formalism for measuring the cosmological distance scale from baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) using the cross-correlation of a sparse redshift survey with a denser photometric sample. This reduces the shot noise that would otherwise affect the auto-correlation of the sparse spectroscopic map. As a proof of principle, we make the first on-sky application of this method to a sparse sample defined as the z>0.6 tail of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey's (SDSS) BOSS/CMASS sample of galaxies and a dense photometric sample from SDSS DR9. We find a 2.8sigma preference for the BAO peak in th…
Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) are frozen relics left over from the pre-decoupling universe. They are the standard rulers of choice for 21st century cosmology, providing distance estimates that are, for the first time, firmly rooted in well-understood, linear physics. This review synthesises current understanding regarding all aspects of BAO cosmology, from the theoretical and statistical to the observational, and includes a map of the future landscape of BAO surveys, both spectroscopic and photometric.
We analyse the MOdified Gravity (MOG) theory, proposed by Moffat, in a cosmological context. We use data from Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia), Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) and Cosmic Chronometers (CC) to test MOG predictions. For this, we perform $χ^2$ tests considering fixed values of $H_0$ and $V_G$, the self-interaction potential of one of the scalar fields in the theory. Our results show that the MOG theory is in agreement with all data sets for some particular values of $H_0$ and $V_G$, being the BAO data set the most powerful tool to test MOG predictions, due to its constraining power.
The baryon acoustic oscillation feature can be used as a standard cosmological ruler. In practice, for sub-percent level accuracy on the distance scale, it must be standardized. The physical reason why is understood, so we use this to develop an algorithm which improves the estimated scale. The algorithm exploits the fact that, over the range of scales where the initial correlation function is well-fit by a polynomial, the leading order effects which distort the length of the ruler can be accounted for analytically. Tests of the method in numerical simulations show that it provides simple and …
The imprint of baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) in large-scale structure can be used as a standard ruler for mapping out the cosmic expansion history, and hence for testing cosmological models. In this article we briefly describe the scientific background to the BAO technique, and forecast the potential of the Phase 1 and 2 SKA telescopes to perform BAO surveys using both galaxy catalogues and intensity mapping, assessing their competitiveness with current and future optical galaxy surveys. We find that a 25,000 sq. deg. intensity mapping survey on a Phase 1 array will preferentially constra…
We use the Risaliti & Lusso (2015) compilation of 808 X-ray and UV flux measurements of quasars (QSOs) in the redshift range $0.061 \leq z \leq 6.28$, alone and in conjuction with baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) and Hubble parameter [$H(z)$] measurements, to constrain cosmological parameters in six cosmological models. The QSO data constraints are significantly weaker than, but consistent with, those from the $H(z)$ + BAO data. A joint analysis of the QSO + $H(z)$ + BAO data is consistent with the current standard model, spatially-flat $Λ$CDM, but mildly favors closed spatial hypersurfaces a…
