Recent research has focused on single antenna radio-frequency (RF) and terahertz (THz) wireless systems to mix the access link with the backhaul. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of a mixed RF-THz system employing multiple antenna-assisted access point (AP) for the RF link and single-antenna THz transmissions. We employ an equal gain combining (EGC) receiver at the AP and use the fixed-gain amplify and forward (AF) relaying protocol to interface the RF and THz links. We derive analytical expressions for probability density function (PDF) and cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the end-to-end SNR for the considered system assuming independent and non-identically distributed (i.ni.d.) $α$-$μ$ distribution to model for both RF and THz channels and pointing errors in the THz link. We analyze the system performance using the outage probability, average bit error rate (BER), and ergodic capacity involving bivariate Fox's H-function. We use the residue method to develop asymptotic analysis using Gamma functions to show the impact of the various channel and system parameters on the outage probability and average BER in the high SNR regime. We use computer simulations to depict the scaling of the performance with an increase in the number of antennas at the AP for signal reception in the access link.

In this paper, we present the performance analysis of mixed RF/FSO system with multiple relays. To select the best relay, we adopt partial relay selection with outdated CSI wherein we investigate the effect of the temporal correlation of the channels. Unlike the vast majority of work, we introduce the impairments to the relays and the destination and we compare the performance against conventional RF relaying systems. We further derive the expressions of the outage probability and the ergodic capacity as well as the bounds to unpack engineering insights into the system robustness.
In this paper, we propose a new relaying protocol for large multihop networks combining the concepts of cooperative diversity and opportunistic relaying. The cooperative relaying protocol is based on two diversity mechanisms, incremental redundancy combining and repetition combining. We assume that nodes in the large multihop network are modeled by a homogeneous Poisson Point Process and operate under Rayleigh fading and constant power transmission per node. The performance of the proposed relaying protocol is evaluated through the progress rate density (PRD) of the multihop network and compar…
In selective cooperative relaying only a single relay out of the set of available relays is activated, hence the available power and bandwidth resources are efficiently utilized. However, implementing selective cooperative relaying in time-varying channels may cause frequent relay switchings that deteriorate the overall performance. In this paper, we study the rate at which a relay switching occurs in selective cooperative relaying applications in time-varying fading channels. In particular, we derive closed-form expressions for the relay switching rate (measured in Hz) for opportunistic relay…

In this paper, spectrum-sharing technology is integrated into cellular systems to improve spectrum efficiency. Macrocell users are primary users (PUs) while those within local cells, e.g., femtocell users, or desiring cost-effective services, e.g., roamers, are identified as secondary users (SUs). The SUs share the spectrum resources of the PUs in a underlay way, thus the transmit power of a secondary is strictly limited by the primary's tolerable interference power. Given such constraints, a cooperative relaying transmission between a SU and the macrocell base station (BS) is necessary. In or…

Specifically, a novel RIS-aided CRS transmission framework is proposed and the corresponding resource allocation problem to maximize the minimum rate among users is investigated. We consider a cognitive radio network consisting of single primary and multiple secondary transmitters/receivers. In addition, there are several relay nodes that help both primary and secondary networks. We propose a new beamforming method for relays' transmission, in which the beamforming weights at the relays are the solution of an optimization problem. The objective of the optimization problem is maximizing the worst case signal to interfer…

Based on CSI, for opportunistic transmission, the source immediately chooses either the direct transmission or the cooperative NOMA transmission using the relay, which can provide…
The performance of an underlay cognitive (secondary) dual-hop relaying system with multiple antennas and hardware impairments at each transceiver is investigated. In particular, the outage probability of the end-to-end (e2e) communication is derived in closed-form, when either transmit antenna selection with maximum ratio combining (TAS/MRC), or TAS with selection combining (TAS/SC) are established in each hop. Simplified asymptotic outage expressions are also obtained, which manifest the diversity and array order of the system, the effectiveness of the balance on the number of transmit/receiv…
Incorporating relaying techniques into Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ) mechanisms gives a general impression of diversity and throughput enhancements. Allowing overhearing among multiple relays is also a known approach to increase the number of participating relays in ARQs. However, when opportunistic amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying is applied to cooperative ARQs, the system design becomes nontrivial and even involved. Based on outage analysis, the spatial and temporal diversities are first found sensitive to the received signal qualities of relays, and a link quality control mechanism is the…

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has attracted great recent attention due to its high spectral efficiency. Besides, NOMA can be easily implemented in physical layer, thus its interplays with other psychical layer techniques have been analyzed widely by researches. Cooperative NOMA schemes are the most investigated among these interplays. However, these studies mostly analyze cooperative NOMA schemes in terms of achievable rate and outage probability whereas bit error probability (BEP) for those systems has not been studied well although it is one of the most important performance metrics.…
In this work, we consider the performance analysis of the uplink cellular networks with free space optics (FSO) backhauling. The user equipment (UE) communicates with the nearest Base Station (BS) in first slot while in second slot, the BS converts the received radio frequency (RF) signal into FSO pulse and transmits to the data center. We adopt the Rayleigh fading for the uplink channels while the FSO backhaul encompasses the turbulence-induced fading which follows the Málaga distribution, the weather pathloss, and the pointing errors fading which is distributed following the generalized Beck…
In this paper, we analyze the performance of cooperative transmissions in wireless ad hoc networks with random node locations. According to a contention probability for message transmission, each source node can either transmits its own message signal or acts as a potential relay for others. Hence, each destination node can potentially receive two copies of the message signal, one from the direct link and the other from the relay link. Taking the random node locations and interference into account, we derive closed-form expressions for the outage probability with different combining schemes at…
In this paper, we present a new cooperative communication scheme consisting of two users in half-duplex mode communicating with one destination over a discrete memoryless channel. The users encode messages in independent blocks and divide the transmission of each block into 3 time slots with variable durations. Cooperation is performed by partial decodeforward relaying over these 3 time slots. During the first two time slots, each user alternatively transmits and decodes, while during the last time slot, both users cooperate to send information to the destination. An achievable rate region for…

This paper studies secrecy transmission with the aid of a group of wireless energy harvesting (WEH)-enabled amplify-and-forward (AF) relays performing cooperative jamming (CJ) and relaying. The source node in the network does simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) with each relay employing a power splitting (PS) receiver in the first phase; each relay further divides its harvested power for forwarding the received signal and generating artificial noise (AN) for jamming the eavesdroppers in the second transmission phase. In the centralized case with global channel state in…
In this paper, we examine the performance of the decode-and-forward (DF) relaying protocols with finite blocklength (FB). We provide the overall outage probability of three distinct DF relaying protocols, where the channels are assumed to be quasi static Rayleigh fading. More importantly, we derive the closed form expressions of the outage probability in the three relaying scenarios. We illustrate protocols where the cooperative communications outperform the direct transmission (DT). In addition, we compare the operating efficiency of the cooperative schemes in the ultra-reliable (UR) region.
"Amplify and Forward" and "Decode and Forward" are the two main relaying functions that have been proposed since the advent of cooperative communication. "\textit{Soft} Decode and Forward" is a recently introduced relaying principle that is to combine the benefits of the classical two relaying algorithms. In this work, we thoroughly investigate \textit{soft} relaying algorithms when convolutional or turbo codes are applied. We study the error performance of two cooperative scenarios employing soft-relaying. A novel approach, the mutual information loss due to data processing, is proposed to an…
We consider a cooperative relaying system which consists of a number of source terminals, one shared relay, and a common destination with multi-packet reception (MPR) capability. In this paper, we study the stability and delay analysis for two cooperative relaying schemes; the sensing-based cooperative (SBC) scheme and the decision-based cooperative (DBC) scheme. In the SBC scheme, the relay senses the channel at the beginning of each time slot. In the idle time slots, the relay transmits the packet at the head of its queue, while in the busy one, the relay decides either to transmit simultane…
The impact of imperfect channel state (CSI) information in an energy harvesting (EH) cooperative non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) network, consisting of a source, two users, and an EH relay is investigated in this paper. Closed-form expressions for the outage probability of both users are derived under imperfect CSI for two different power allocation strategies namely fixed and dynamic power allocation. Monte Carlo simulations are used to numerically evaluate t…
This paper investigates a wireless-powered cooperative communication network consisting of a source, a destination and a multi-antenna decode-and-forward relay. We consider the relay as a wireless-powered node that has no external power supply; but it is equipped with an energy harvesting (EH) unit and a rechargeable battery such that it can harvest and accumulate energy from radio-frequency signals broadcast by the source. By fully incorporating the EH feature of the relay, we develop an opportunistic relaying protocol, termed accumulate-then-forward (ATF), for the considered WPCCN. We then a…

The design is based on minimum mean-square-error criterion, and both uplink and downlink scenarios are considered. It is found that the downlink and uplink beamforming design problems are in the same form, and iterative algorithms with the same structure can be used to solve the design problems. For the specific cases of fully loaded or overloaded uplink systems, a novel algorithm is derived…
This work analyzes the gains of cooperative relaying in interference-limited networks, in which outages can be due to interference and fading. A stochastic model based on point process theory is used to capture the spatial randomness present in contemporary wireless networks. Using a modification of the diversity order metric, the reliability gain of selection decode-and-forward is studied for several cases. The main results are as follows: the achievable \emph{spatial-contention} diversity order (SC-DO) is equal to one irrespective of the type of channel which is due to the ineffectiveness of…
In this paper we investigate cooperative secure communications in a four-node cognitive radio network where the secondary receiver is treated as a potential eavesdropper with respect to the primary transmission. The secondary user is allowed to transmit his own signals under the condition that the primary user's secrecy rate and transmission scheme are intact. Under this setting we derive the secondary user's achievable rates and the related constraints to guarantee the primary user's weak secrecy rate, when Gelfand-Pinsker coding is used at the secondary transmitter. In addition, we propose a…

This work studies the performance of a cooperative network which consists of two channel-coded sources, multiple relays, and one destination. Due to spectral efficiency constraint, we assume only one time slot is dedicated for relaying. Conventional network coding based cooperation (NCC) selects the best relay which uses network coding to serve two sources simultaneously. The performance in terms of bit error rate (BER) of NCC, however, is not available in the literature. In this paper, we first derive the closed-form expression for the BER of NCC and analytically show that NCC always achieves…
A harvest-use-store power splitting (PS) relaying strategy with distributed beamforming is proposed for wirelesspowered multi-relay cooperative networks in this paper. Different from the conventional battery-free PS relaying strategy, harvested energy is prioritized to power information relaying while the remainder is accumulated and stored for future usage with the help of a battery in the proposed strategy, which supports an efficient utilization of harvested energy. However, PS affects throughput at subsequent time slots due to the battery operations including the charging and discharging. …
In this paper the benefits provided by multi-cell processing of signals transmitted by mobile terminals which are received via dedicated relay terminals (RTs) are assessed. Unlike previous works, each RT is assumed here to be capable of full-duplex operation and receives the transmission of adjacent relay terminals. Focusing on intra-cell TDMA and non-fading channels, a simplified uplink cellular model introduced by Wyner is considered. This framework facilitates analytical derivation of the per-cell sum-rate of multi-cell and conventional single-cell receivers. In particular, the analysis is …
In spectrum-sharing cognitive radio systems, the transmit power of secondary users has to be very low due to the restrictions on the tolerable interference power dictated by primary users. In order to extend the coverage area of secondary transmission and reduce the corresponding interference region, multi-hop amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying can be implemented for the communication between secondary transmitters and receivers. This paper addresses the fundamental limits of this promising technique. Specifically, the effect of major system parameters on the performance of spectrum-sharing mul…
In this paper, we consider a cognitive setting under the context of cooperative communications, where the cognitive radio (CR) user is assumed to be a self-organized relay for the network. The CR user and the PU are assumed to be energy harvesters. The CR user cooperatively relays some of the undelivered packets of the primary user (PU). Specifically, the CR user stores a fraction of the undelivered primary packets in a relaying queue (buffer). It manages the flow of the undelivered primary packets to its relaying queue using the appropriate actions over time slots. Moreover, it has the decisi…
Free-space optical (FSO) channel offers line-of-sight wireless communication with high data rates and high secrecy utilizing unlicensed optical spectrum and also paves the way to the solution of the last-mile access problem. Since atmospheric turbulence is a hindrance to an enhanced secrecy performance, the mixed radio frequency (RF)-FSO system is gaining enormous research interest in recent days. But conventional FSO models except for the double generalized Gamma (DGG) model can not demonstrate secrecy performance for all ranges of turbulence severity. This reason has led us to propose a dual…
In URLLC the performance of short message communications highly depends on the training sequence length due to the stringent latency and reliability requirements. In this paper, we study the performance of cooperative and non-cooperative transmissions under imperfect channel estimation and Rayleigh fading for URLLC. We assume a peak power constraint on pilot symbols in addition to the average power constraint which is used for comparison purposes. We obtain the optimal training length as a function of blocklength and power constraint factor to meet the URLLC requirements. Moreover, the simulat…
We consider a three-terminal state-dependent relay channel with the channel state noncausally available at only the relay. Such a model may be useful for designing cooperative wireless networks with some terminals equipped with cognition capabilities, i.e., the relay in our setup. In the discrete memoryless (DM) case, we establish lower and upper bounds on channel capacity. The lower bound is obtained by a coding scheme at the relay that uses a combination of codeword splitting, Gel'fand-Pinsker binning, and decode-and-forward relaying. The upper bound improves upon that obtained by assuming t…
We analyze the performance of an interference-limited, decode-and-forward, cooperative relaying system that comprises a source, a destination, and $N$ relays, placed arbitrarily on the plane and suffering from interference by a set of interferers placed according to a spatial Poisson process. In each transmission attempt, first the transmitter sends a packet; subsequently, a single one of the relays that received the packet correctly, if such a relay exists, retransmits it. We consider both selection combining and maximal ratio combining at the destination, Rayleigh fading, and interferer mobi…
In this paper, we consider a two-hop cooperative network with a direct link based on an energy harvesting (EH) decode-and-forward relay. The energy-buffer equipped relay harvests energy from the ambience, and uses the harvest-store-use (HSU) architecture. Since it is known that using a discrete-state Markov chain to model the energy buffer is inaccurate even for moderate number of states, we use a discrete-time continuous-state space Markov chain instead. We derive the limiting distribution of energy for both incremental on-off policy (IOFP) and the incremental best-effort policy (IBEF), and u…
We propose a novel relaying scheme which improves the spectral efficiency of cooperative diversity systems by utilizing limited feedback from destination. Our scheme capitalizes on the fact that relaying is only required when direct transmission suffers deep fading. We calculate the packet error rate for the proposed efficient incremental relaying scheme with both amplify and forward and decode and forward relaying. Numerical results are also presented to verify their analytical counterparts.

We propose an age-oriented opportunistic relaying (AoR) protocol to reduce the AoI of the considered system. Specifically, the relay opportunistically replaces the source to retransmit the successfully received status updates that have not been correctly delivered to the destination, bu…
This paper investigates the secure communication in a two-hop cooperative wireless network, where a buffer-aided relay is utilized to forward data from the source to destination, and a passive eavesdropper attempts to intercept data transmission from both the source and relay. Depending on the availability of instantaneous channel state information of the source, two cases of transmission mechanisms, i.e., adaptive-rate transmission and fixed-rate transmission are considered. To enhance the security of the system, novel link selection policies are proposed for both cases to select source-to-re…
Numerous studies claim that terahertz (THz) communication will be an essential piece of sixth-generation wireless communication systems. Its promising potential also comes with major challenges, in particular the reduced coverage due to harsh propagation loss, hardware constraints, and blockage vulnerability. To increase the coverage of THz communication, we revisit cooperative communication. We propose a new type of cooperative rate-splitting (CRS) called extraction-based CRS (eCRS). Furthermore, we explore two extreme cases of eCRS, namely, identical eCRS and distinct eCRS. To enable the pro…
