The steepest descent method proposed by Fliege et al. motivates the research on descent methods for multiobjective optimization, which has received increasing attention in recent years. However, empirical results show that the Armijo line search often gives a very small stepsize along the steepest direction, which decelerates the convergence seriously. This paper points out that the issue is mainly due to the imbalances among objective functions. To address this issue, we propose a Barzilai-Borwein descent method for multiobjective optimization (BBDMO) that dynamically tunes gradient magnitudes using Barzilai-Borwein's rule in direction-finding subproblem. With monotone and nonmonotone line search techniques, it is proved that accumulation points generated by BBDMO are Pareto critical points, respectively. Furthermore, theoretical results indicate the Armijo line search can achieve a better stepsize in BBDMO. Finally, comparative results of numerical experiments are reported to illustrate the efficiency of BBDMO and verify the theoretical results.
Barzilai-Borwein (BB) steplength is a popular choice in gradient descent method. By observing that the two existing BB steplengths correspond to the ordinary and the data least squares, respectively, we employ the third kind of least squares, the total least squares, to create a new BB steplength, which is shown to lie between the two existing BB steplengths.
Due to simplicity, computational cheapness, and efficiency, the Barzilai and Borwein (BB) gradient method has received a significant amount of attention in different fields of optimization. In the first part of this paper, based on spectral analysis, R-linear global convergence for the BB-method is proven for strictly convex quadratic problems posed in infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces. Then this result is strengthened to R-linear local convergence for a class of twice continuously Fréchet-differentiable functions. In the second part, aiming at problems governed by partial differential equat…
A novel gradient stepsize is derived at the motivation of equipping the Barzilai-Borwein (BB) method with two dimensional quadratic termination property. A remarkable feature of the novel stepsize is that its computation only depends on the BB stepsizes in previous iterations and does not require any exact line search or the Hessian, and hence it can easily be extended for nonlinear optimization. By adaptively taking long BB steps and some short steps associated with the new stepsize, we develop an efficient gradient method for quadratic optimization and general unconstrained optimization and …
The Barzilai-Borwein (BB) gradient method is efficient for solving large-scale unconstrained problems to the modest accuracy and has a great advantage of being easily extended to solve a wide class of constrained optimization problems. In this paper, we propose a new stepsize to accelerate the BB method by requiring finite termination for minimizing two-dimensional strongly convex quadratic function. Combing with this new stepsize, we develop gradient methods which adaptively take the nonmonotone BB stepsizes and certain monotone stepsizes for minimizing general strongly convex quadratic funct…
The Barzilai-Borwein (BB) method is a popular and efficient tool for solving large-scale unconstrained optimization problems. Its search direction is the same as for the steepest descent (Cauchy) method, but its stepsize rule is different. Owing to this, it converges much faster than the Cauchy method. A feature of the BB method is that it may generate too long steps, which throw the iterates too far away from the solution. Moreover, it may not converge, even when the objective function is strongly convex. In this paper, a stabilization technique is introduced. It consists in bounding the dist…

The Barzilai-Borwein (BB) method has demonstrated great empirical success in nonlinear optimization. However, the convergence speed of BB method is not well understood, as the known convergence rate of BB method for quadratic problems is much worse than the steepest descent (SD) method. Therefore, there is a large discrepancy between theory and practice. To shrink this gap, we prove that the BB method converges $R$-linearly at a rate of $1-1/κ$, where $κ$ is the condition number, for strongly convex quadratic problems. In addition, an example with the theoretical rate of convergence is constru…
In this paper, we propose a new non-monotone conjugate gradient method for solving unconstrained nonlinear optimization problems. We first modify the non-monotone line search method by introducing a new trigonometric function to calculate the non-monotone parameter, which plays an essential role in the algorithm's efficiency. Then, we apply a convex combination of the Barzilai-Borwein method for calculating the value of step size in each iteration. Under some suitable assumptions, we prove that the new algorithm has the global convergence property. The efficiency and effectiveness of the propo…

Variable metric proximal gradient (VM-PG) is a widely used class of convex optimization method. Lately, there has been a lot of research on the theoretical guarantees of VM-PG with different metric selections. However, most such metric selections are dependent on (an expensive) Hessian, or limited to scalar stepsizes like the Barzilai-Borwein (BB) stepsize with lots of safeguarding. Instead, in this paper we propose an adaptive metric selection strategy called the diagonal Barzilai-Borwein (BB) stepsize. The proposed diagonal selection better captures the local geometry of the problem while ke…
In this paper, we consider to improve the stochastic variance reduce gradient (SVRG) method via incorporating the curvature information of the objective function. We propose to reduce the variance of stochastic gradients using the computationally efficient Barzilai-Borwein (BB) method by incorporating it into the SVRG. We also incorporate a BB-step size as its variant. We prove its linear convergence theorem that works not only for the proposed method but also for the other existing variants of SVRG with second-order information. We conduct the numerical experiments on the benchmark datasets a…
We consider a distributed multi-agent optimization problem over a time-invariant undirected graph, where each agent possesses a local objective function and all agents collaboratively minimize the average of all objective functions through local computations and communications among neighbors. Recently, a class of distributed gradient methods has been proposed that achieves both exact and geometric convergence when a constant step size is used. The geometric convergence of these methods is ensured for conservatively selected step sizes, but how to choose an appropriate step size while running …
The growth in sizes of large-scale systems and data in machine learning have made distributed optimization a naturally appealing technique to solve decision problems in different contexts. In such methods, each agent iteratively carries out computations on its local objective using information received from its neighbors, and shares relevant information with neighboring agents. Though gradient-based methods are widely used because of their simplicity, they are known to have slow convergence rates. On the other hand, though Newton-type methods have better convergence properties, they are not as…
This paper considers the online scenario using the Barzilai-Borwein Quasi-Newton Method. In an online optimization problem, an online agent uses a certain algorithm to decide on an objective at each time step after which a possible loss is encountered. Even though the online player will ideally try to make the best decisions possible at each time step, there is a notion of regret associated with the player's decisions. This study examines the regret of an online player using optimization methods like the Quasi-Newton methods, due to their fast convergent properties. The Barzilai-Borwein (BB) g…

Variable metric proximal gradient methods with different metric selections have been widely used in composite optimization. Combining the Barzilai-Borwein (BB) method with a diagonal selection strategy for the metric, the diagonal BB stepsize can keep low per-step computation cost as the scalar BB stepsize and better capture the local geometry of the problem. In this paper, we propose a variable metric mini-batch proximal stochastic recursive gradient algorithm VM-mSRGBB, which updates the metric using a new diagonal BB stepsize. The linear convergence of VM-mSRGBB is established for strongly …

One of the major issues in stochastic gradient descent (SGD) methods is how to choose an appropriate step size while running the algorithm. Since the traditional line search technique does not apply for stochastic optimization algorithms, the common practice in SGD is either to use a diminishing step size, or to tune a fixed step size by hand, which can be time consuming in practice. In this paper, we propose to use the Barzilai-Borwein (BB) method to automatically compute step sizes for SGD and its variant: stochastic variance reduced gradient (SVRG) method, which leads to two algorithms: SGD…
The limited memory steepest descent method (LMSD) proposed by Fletcher is an extension of the Barzilai-Borwein "two-point step size" strategy for steepest descent methods for solving unconstrained optimization problems. It is known that the Barzilai-Borwein strategy yields a method with an R-linear rate of convergence when it is employed to minimize a strongly convex quadratic. This paper extends this analysis for LMSD, also for strongly convex quadratics. In particular, it is shown that the method is R-linearly convergent for any choice of the history length parameter. The results of numerica…

An efficient gradient-based method to solve the volume constrained topology optimization problems is presented. Each iterate of this algorithm is obtained by the projection of a Barzilai-Borwein step onto the feasible set consisting of box and one linear constraints (volume constraint). To ensure the global convergence, an adaptive nonmonotone line search is performed along the direction that is given by the current and projection point. The adaptive cyclic reuse of the Barzilai-Borwein step is applied as the initial stepsize. The minimum memory requirement, the guaranteed convergence property…

Learning representation from relative similarity comparisons, often called ordinal embedding, gains rising attention in recent years. Most of the existing methods are batch methods designed mainly based on the convex optimization, say, the projected gradient descent method. However, they are generally time-consuming due to that the singular value decomposition (SVD) is commonly adopted during the update, especially when the data size is very large. To overcome this challenge, we propose a stochastic algorithm called SVRG-SBB, which has the following features: (a) SVD-free via dropping convexit…

In this paper, we propose a non-monotone line search method for solving optimization problems on Stiefel manifold. Our method uses as a search direction a mixed gradient based on a descent direction, and a Barzilai-Borwein line search. Feasibility is guaranteed by projecting each iterate on the Stiefel manifold, through SVD factorizations. Some theoretical results for analyzing the algorithm are presented. Finally, we provide numerical experiments comparing our algorithm with other state-of-the-art procedures.
This paper considers optimization problems on the Stiefel manifold $X^{\mathsf{T}}X=I_p$, where $X\in \mathbb{R}^{n \times p}$ is the variable and $I_p$ is the $p$-by-$p$ identity matrix. A framework of constraint preserving update schemes is proposed by decomposing each feasible point into the range space of $X$ and the null space of $X^{\mathsf{T}}$. While this general framework can unify many existing schemes, a new update scheme with low complexity cost is also discovered. Then we study a feasible Barzilai-Borwein-like method under the new update scheme. The global convergence of the metho…
Optimization problems over permutation matrices appear widely in facility layout, chip design, scheduling, pattern recognition, computer vision, graph matching, etc. Since this problem is NP-hard due to the combinatorial nature of permutation matrices, we relax the variable to be the more tractable doubly stochastic matrices and add an $L_p$-norm ($0 < p < 1$) regularization term to the objective function. The optimal solutions of the $L_p$-regularized problem are the same as the original problem if the regularization parameter is sufficiently large. A lower bound estimation of the nonzero ent…
