Recently vision transformer has achieved tremendous success on image-level visual recognition tasks. To effectively and efficiently model the crucial temporal information within a video clip, we propose a Temporally Efficient Vision Transformer (TeViT) for video instance segmentation (VIS). Different from previous transformer-based VIS methods, TeViT is nearly convolution-free, which contains a transformer backbone and a query-based video instance segmentation head. In the backbone stage, we propose a nearly parameter-free messenger shift mechanism for early temporal context fusion. In the head stages, we propose a parameter-shared spatiotemporal query interaction mechanism to build the one-to-one correspondence between video instances and queries. Thus, TeViT fully utilizes both framelevel and instance-level temporal context information and obtains strong temporal modeling capacity with negligible extra computational cost. On three widely adopted VIS benchmarks, i.e., YouTube-VIS-2019, YouTube-VIS-2021, and OVIS, TeViT obtains state-of-the-art results and maintains high inference speed, e.g., 46.6 AP with 68.9 FPS on YouTube-VIS-2019. Code is available at https://github.com/hustvl/TeViT.
The importance and demands of visual scene understanding have been steadily increasing along with the active development of autonomous systems. Semantic segmentation provides information on plausible physical motion to its associated pixels, and accurate pixel-level temporal correspon…

In this paper, we introduce a method to adapt still image segmentation models to video in an unsupervised manner, by using an optical flow-based consistency measure. To ensure that the inferred segmented videos appear more stable in practice, we verify that the consistency measure is well correlated with human judgement via a user study. Video instance segmentation aims to detect, segment, and track objects in a video. Current approaches extend image-level segmentation algorithms to the temporal domain. However, this results in temporally inconsistent masks. In this work, we identify the mask quality due to temporal stability as a performance bottleneck. Motivated by this, we propose a video instance segmentation method that alleviates the problem due to missing detections. Since this cannot be solved simply using spatial information, we leverage temporal context using inter-frame attentions. This allows our network to refocus…

Current state-of-the-art human action recognition is focused on the classification of temporally trimmed videos in which only one action occurs per frame. In this work we address the problem of action localisation and instance segmentation in which multiple concurrent actions of the same class may be segmented out of an image sequence. We cast the action tube extraction as an energy maximisation problem in which configurations of region proposals in each frame are assigned a cost and the best action tubes are selected via two passes of dynamic programming. One pass associates region proposals …
We present an approach for object segmentation in videos that combines frame-level object detection with concepts from object tracking and motion segmentation. The approach extracts temporally consistent object tubes based on an off-the-shelf detector. Besides the class label for each tube, this provides a location prior that is independent of motion. For the final video segmentation, we combine this information with motion cues. The method overcomes the typical problems of weakly supervised/unsupervised video segmentation, such as scenes with no motion, dominant camera motion, and objects tha…

Transformer-based neural networks have surpassed promising performance on many biomedical image segmentation tasks due to a better global information modeling from the self-attention mechanism. However, most methods are still designed for 2D medical images while ignoring the essential 3D volume information. The main challenge for 3D transformer-based segmentation methods is the quadratic complexity introduced by the self-attention mechanism \cite{vaswani2017attention}. We propose Clustering Mask Transformer (CMT-DeepLab), a transformer-based framework for panoptic segmentation designed around clustering. It rethinks the existing transformer architectures used in segmentation and detection; CMT-DeepLab considers the object queries as cluster centers, which fill the role of grouping the pixels when applied to segmentation. The clustering is computed with an alternating procedure, by first assigning pixels to the clusters by their feature affinity, and then updating the cluster centers and pixel features. Together, these operations comprise the Clustering Mask …

We present TDNet, a temporally distributed network designed for fast and accurate video semantic segmentation. We observe that features extracted from a certain high-level layer of a deep CNN can be approximated by composing features extracted from several shallower sub-networks. Leveraging the inherent temporal continuity in videos, we distribute these sub-networks over sequential frames. Therefore, at each time step, we only need to perform a lightweight computation to extract a sub-features group from a single sub-network. Incremental semantic segmentation(ISS) is an emerging task where old model is updated by incrementally adding new classes. At present, methods based on convolutional neural networks are dominant in ISS. However, studies have shown that such methods have difficulty in learning new tasks while maintaining good performance on old ones (catastrophic forgetting). In contrast, a Transformer based method has a natural advantage in curbing catastrophic forgetting due to its ability to model both long-term and short-term tasks. In this work, we explore the reasons why Transformer based architecture are…
