In Rayleigh-Benard convection and Taylor-Couette flow cellular patterns emerge at the onset of instability and persist as large-scale coherent structures in the turbulent regime. Their long-term dynamics has been thoroughly characterised and modelled for the case of turbulent convection, whereas turbulent Taylor rolls have received much less attention. Here we present direct numerical simulations of axisymmetric Taylor-Couette flow and show a discontinuous phase-transition to spatio-temporal chaos as the system size increases. Beyond this transition, Taylor rolls suddenly undergo erratic drifts evolving on a very slow time scale. We estimate an effective diffusion coefficient for the drift and compare the dynamics to analogous motions in Rayleigh-Benard convection and Poiseuille flow, suggesting that this spontaneous diffusive displacement of large coherent structures is common among different types of wall-bounded turbulent flows.
Since Taylor's seminal paper, the existence of large-scale quasi-axisymmetric structures has been a matter of interest when studying Taylor-Couette flow. In this manuscript, we probe their formation in the highly turbulent regime by conducting a series of numerical simulations at a fixed Reynolds number $Re_s=3.6\times 10^4$ while varying the Coriolis parameter to analyze the flow characteristics as the structures arise and dissipate. We show how the Coriolis force induces a one-way coupling between the radial and azimuthal velocity fields inside the boundary layer, but in the bulk there is a …
In many shear- and pressure-driven wall-bounded turbulent flows secondary motions spontaneously develop and their interaction with the main flow alters the overall large-scale features and transfer properties. Taylor-Couette flow, the fluid motion developing in the gap between two concentric cylinders rotating at different angular velocity, is not an exception, and toroidal Taylor rolls have been observed from the early development of the flow up to the fully turbulent regime. In this manuscript we show that under the generic name of ``Taylor rolls'' there is a wide variety of structures that …
A series of direct numerical simulations in large computational domains has been performed in order to probe the spatial feature robustness of the Taylor rolls in turbulent Taylor-Couette (TC) flow. The latter is the flow between two coaxial independently rotating cylinders of radius $r_i$ and $r_o$, respectively. Large axial aspect ratios $Γ= 7$-$8$ (with $Γ= L/(r_o-r_i)$, and $L$ the axial length of the domain) and a simulation with $Γ=14$ were used in order to allow the system to select the most unstable wavenumber and to possibly develop multiple states. The radius ratio was taken as $η=r_…
The transition from Tayor vortex flow to wavy-vortex flow is revisited. The Self-Sustaining Process (SSP) of Waleffe [Phys. Fluids 9, 883-900 (1997)] proposes that a key ingredient in transition to turbulence in wall-bounded shear flows is a three-step process involving rolls advecting streamwise velocity, leading to streaks which become unstable to a wavy perturbation whose nonlinear interaction with itself feeds the rolls. We investigate this process in Taylor-Couette flow. The instability of Taylor-vortex flow to wavy-vortex flow, a process which is the inspiration for the second phase of t…
We investigate the existence of multiple turbulent states in highly turbulent Taylor-Couette flow in the range of $\mathrm{Ta}=10^{11}$ to $9\cdot10^{12}$, by measuring the global torques and the local velocities while probing the phase space spanned by the rotation rates of the inner and outer cylinder. The multiple states are found to be very robust and are expected to persist beyond $\mathrm{Ta}=10^{13}$. The rotation ratio is the parameter that most strongly controls the transitions between the flow states; the transitional values only weakly depend on the Taylor number. However, complex p…
In search for the cheapest but still reliable numerical simulation, a systematic study on the effect of the computational domain ("box") size on direct numerical simulations of Taylor-Couette flow was performed. Four boxes, with varying azimuthal and axial extents were used. The radius ratio between the inner cylinder and the outer cylinder was fixed to $η=r_i/r_o=0.909$, and the outer was kept stationary, while the inner rotated at a Reynolds number $Re_i=10^5$. Profiles of mean and fluctuation velocities are compared, as well as autocorrelations and velocity spectra. The smallest box is foun…
Taylor-Couette (TC) flow, the flow between two independently rotating and co-axial cylinders is commonly used as a canonical model for shear flows. Unlike plane Couette, pinned secondary flows can be found in TC flow. These are known as Taylor rolls and drastically affect the flow behaviour. We study the possibility of modifying these secondary structures using patterns of stress-free and no-slip boundary conditions on the inner cylinder. For this, we perform direct numerical simulations of narrow-gap TC flow with pure inner cylinder rotation at four different shear Reynolds numbers up to $Re_…
The decay of Taylor-Couette turbulence, i.e~the flow between two coaxial and independently rotating cylinders, is numerically studied by instantaneously stopping the forcing from an initially statistically stationary flow field at a Reynolds number of $Re=3.5\times 10^4$. The effect of wall-friction is analysed by comparing three separate cases, in which the cylinders are either suddenly made no-slip or stress-free. Different life stages are observed during the decay. In the first stage, the decay is dominated by large-scale rolls. Counterintuitively, when these rolls fade away, if the flow in…
Using high-resolution particle image velocimetry we measure velocity profiles, the wind Reynolds number and characteristics of turbulent plumes in Taylor-Couette flow for a radius ratio of 0.5 and Taylor number of up to $6.2\cdot10^9$. The extracted angular velocity profiles follow a log-law more closely than the azimuthal velocity profiles due to the strong curvature of this $η=0.5$ setup. The scaling of the wind Reynolds number with the Taylor number agrees with the theoretically predicted 3/7-scaling for the classical turbulent regime, which is much more pronounced than for the well-explore…
We derive the velocity profiles in strongly turbulent Taylor-Couette flow for the general case of independently rotating cylinders. The theory is based on the Navier-Stokes equations in the appropriate (cylinder) geometry. In particular, we derive the axial and the angular velocity profiles as functions of distance from the cylinder walls and find that both follow a logarithmic profile, with downwards-bending curvature corrections, which are more pronounced for the angular velocity profile as compared to the axial velocity profile, and which strongly increase with decreasing ratio $η$ between …
Direct numerical simulations of turbulent Taylor-Couette flow are performed up to inner cylinder Reynolds numbers of {Re_i=10^5} for a radius ratio of {η=r_i/r_o=0.714} between the inner and outer cylinder. With increasing {Re_i}, the flow undergoes transitions between three different regimes: (i) a flow dominated by large coherent structures, (ii) an intermediate transitional regime, and (iii) a flow with developed turbulence. In the first regime the large--scale rolls completely drive the meridional flow while in the second one the coherent structures recover only on average. The presence of…
In this paper, we experimentally study the influence of large-scale Taylor rolls on the small-scale statistics and the flow organization in fully turbulent Taylor-Couette flow {for Reynolds numbers up to $\text{Re}_S=3\times 10^5$}. The velocity field in the gap confined by coaxial and independently rotating cylinders at a radius ratio of $η=0.714$ is measured using planar {particle image velocimetry} in horizontal planes at different cylinder heights. Flow regions with and without prominent Taylor vortices are compared. We show that the local angular momentum transport (expressed in terms of …
We experimentally study the influence of wall roughness on bubble drag reduction in turbulent Taylor-Couette flow, i.e.\ the flow between two concentric, independently rotating cylinders. We measure the drag in the system for the cases with and without air, and add roughness by installing transverse ribs on either one or both of the cylinders. For the smooth wall case (no ribs) and the case of ribs on the inner cylinder only, we observe strong drag reduction up to $DR=33\%$ and $DR=23\%$, respectively, for a void fraction of $α=6\%$. However, with ribs mounted on both cylinders or on the outer…
Air cavities, i.e. air layers developed behind cavitators, are seen as a promising drag reducing method in the maritime industry. Here we utilize the Taylor-Couette (TC) geometry, i.e. the flow between two concentric, independently rotating cylinders, to study the effect of air cavities in this closed setup, which is well-accessible for drag measurements and optical flow visualizations. We show that stable air cavities can be formed, and that the cavity size increases with Reynolds number and void fraction. The streamwise cavity length strongly depends on the axial position due to buoyancy for…
We use experiments and direct numerical simulations to probe the phase-space of low-curvature Taylor--Couette (TC) flow in the vicinity of the ultimate regime. The cylinder radius ratio is fixed at $η=r_i/r_o=0.91$. Non-dimensional shear drivings (Taylor numbers $\text{Ta}$) in the range $10^7\leq\text{Ta}\leq10^{11}$ are explored for both co- and counter-rotating configurations. In the $\text{Ta}$ range $10^8\leq\text{Ta}\leq10^{10}$, we observe two local maxima of the angular momentum transport as a function of the cylinder rotation ratio, which can be described as either as "co-" and "count…
Direct numerical simulations of the Taylor-Couette (TC) problem, the flow between two coaxial and independently rotating cylinders, have been performed. The study focuses on TC flow with mild curvature (small gap) with a radius ratio of $η=r_i/r_o=0.909$, an aspect ratio of $Γ=L/d=2π/3$, and a stationary outer cylinder. Three inner cylinder Reynolds of $1\cdot10^5$, $2\cdot10^5$ and $3\cdot 10^5$ were simulated, corresponding to frictional Reynolds numbers between $Re_τ\approx 1400$ and $Re_τ\approx 4000$. An additional case with a large gap, $η=0.5$ and driving of $Re=2\cdot10^5$ was also per…
Two-phase turbulent Taylor-Couette (TC) flow is simulated using an Euler-Lagrange approach to study the effects of a secondary phase dispersed into a turbulent carrier phase (here bubbles dispersed into water). The dynamics of the carrier phase is computed using Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) in an Eulerian framework, while the bubbles are tracked in a Lagrangian manner by modelling the effective drag, lift, added mass and buoyancy force acting on them. Two-way coupling is implemented between the dispersed phase and the carrier phase which allows for momentum exchange among both phases and…
We present the results of direct numerical simulations of flow patterns in a low-Prandtl-number ($Pr = 0.1$) fluid above the onset of oscillatory convection in a Rayleigh-Bénard system rotating uniformly about a vertical axis. Simulations were carried out in a periodic box with thermally conducting and stress-free top and bottom surfaces. We considered a rectangular box ($L_x \times L_y \times 1$) and a wide range of Taylor numbers ($750 \le Ta \le 5000$) for the purpose. The horizontal aspect ratio $η= L_y/L_x$ of the box was varied from $0.5$ to $10$. The primary instability appeared in the …

We consider the onset of Boussinesq convection in a horizontal layer of electrically conducting incompressible fluid with rigid electrically insulating horizontal boundaries. The fluid is heated from below and rotates about a vertical axis; vertical magnetic field is imposed. The instability of the trivial steady state (fluid at rest) can be monotonic or oscillatory depending on parameters of the problem (the kinematic and magnetic Prandtl, Taylor and Chandrasekhar numbers). If the Taylor number is sufficiently large, convective rolls, emerging in the monotonic instability, experience the Küpp…
We derive interface models for 3D Rayleigh-Taylor instability (RTI), making use of a novel asymptotic expansion in the non-locality of the fluid flow. These interface models are derived for the purpose of studying universal features associated to RTI such as the Froude number in single-mode RTI, the predicted quadratic growth of the interface amplitude under multi-mode random perturbations, the optimal (viscous) mixing rates induced by the RTI and the self-similarity of horizontally averaged density profiles, and the remarkable stabilization of the mixing layer growth rate which arises for the…
In a plane Couette cell a thin fluid layer consisting of water is sheared between a transparent band at Reynolds numbers ranging from 300 to 1400. The length of the cells flow channel is large compared to the film separation. To extract the flow velocity in the experiments a correlation image velocimetry (CIV) method is used on pictures recorded with a high speed camera. The flow is recorded at a resolution that allows to analyze flow patterns similar in size to the film separation. The fluid flow is then studied by calculating flow velocity autocorrelation functions. The turbulent pattern tha…
We perform direct numerical simulations of rotating turbulent Waleffe flow, the flow between two parallel plates with a sinusoidal streamwise shear driving force, to study the formation of large-scale structures and the mechanisms for momentum transport. We simulate different cyclonic and anti-cyclonic rotations in the range of dimensionless rotation numbers (inverse Rossby numbers) $R_Ω$ $\in$ $[-0.16, 2.21]$, and fix the Reynolds number to $Re=3.16\times 10^3$, large enough such that the shear transport is almost entirely due to Reynolds stresses and viscous transport is negligible. We find …
We develop a novel multiscale model of interface motion for the Rayleigh-Taylor instability (RTI) and Richtmyer-Meshkov instability (RMI) for two-dimensional, inviscid, compressible flows with vorticity, which yields a fast-running numerical algorithm that produces both qualitatively and quantitatively similar results to a resolved gas dynamics code, while running approximately two orders of magnitude (in time) faster. Our multiscale model is founded upon a new compressible-incompressible decomposition of the velocity field $u=v+w$. The incompressible component $w$ of the velocity is also irro…
The four-roll mill, wherein four identical cylinders undergo rotation of identical magnitude but alternate signs, was originally proposed by GI Taylor to create local extensional flows and study their ability to deform small liquid drops. Since an extensional flow has an unstable eigendirection, a drop located at the flow stagnation point will have a tendency to escape. This unstable dynamics can however be stabilised using, e.g., a modulation of the rotation rates of the cylinders. Here we use Reinforcement Learning, a branch of Machine Learning devoted to the optimal selection of actions bas…
High-speed turbulent flows are encountered in most space-related applications (including exploration, tourism and defense fields) and represent a subject of growing interest in the last decades. A major challenge in performing high-fidelity simulations of such flows resides in the stringent requirements for the numerical schemes to be used. These must be robust enough to handle strong, unsteady discontinuities, while ensuring low amounts of intrinsic dissipation in smooth flow regions. Furthermore, the wide range of temporal and spatial active scales leads to concurrent needs for numerical sta…
