Single-stage detectors suffer from extreme foreground-background class imbalance, while two-stage detectors do not. Therefore, in semi-supervised object detection, two-stage detectors can deliver remarkable performance by only selecting high-quality pseudo labels based on classification scores. However, directly applying this strategy to single-stage detectors would aggravate the class imbalance with fewer positive samples. Thus, single-stage detectors have to consider both quality and quantity of pseudo labels simultaneously. In this paper, we design a dynamic self-adaptive threshold (DSAT) strategy in classification branch, which can automatically select pseudo labels to achieve an optimal trade-off between quality and quantity. Besides, to assess the regression quality of pseudo labels in single-stage detectors, we propose a module to compute the regression uncertainty of boxes based on Non-Maximum Suppression. By leveraging only 10% labeled data from COCO, our method achieves 35.0% AP on anchor-free detector (FCOS) and 32.9% on anchor-based detector (RetinaNet).

Semantic segmentation with limited annotations, such as weakly supervised semantic segmentation (WSSS) and semi-supervised semantic segmentation (SSSS), is a challenging task that has attracted much attention recently. Most leading WSSS methods employ a sophisticated multi-stage training strategy to estimate pseudo-labels as precise as possible, but they suffer from high model complexity. In contrast, there exists another research line that trains a single network with image-level labels in one training cycle. However, such a single-stage strategy often performs poorly because of the compoundi…
Semi-supervised object detection (SSOD) is a research hot spot in computer vision, which can greatly reduce the requirement for expensive bounding-box annotations. Despite great success, existing progress mainly focuses on two-stage detection networks like FasterRCNN, while the research on one-stage detectors is often ignored. In this paper, we focus on the semi-supervised learning for the advanced and popular one-stage detection network YOLOv5. Compared with Faster-RCNN, the implementation of YOLOv5 is much more complex, and the various training techniques used in YOLOv5 can also reduce the b…

We introduce two such architectures, with either two cascade stages or three which are trained in an end-to-end pipeline. The first stage of both architectures extracts best candidate of class specific region proposals by training …

In this work, we address this problem by proposing a holistic solution framed as a three-stage self-training framework for semi-supervised semantic segmentation. The key idea of our…

Semantic segmentation has been continuously investigated in the last ten years, and majority of the established technologies are based on supervised models. In recent years, image-level weakly supervised semantic segmentation (WSSS), including single- and multi-stage process, has attracted large attention due to data labeling efficiency. In this paper, we propose to embed affinity learning of multi-stage approaches in a single-stage model. To be specific, we introduce an adaptive affinity loss to thoroughly learn the local pairwise affinity. As such, a deep neural network is used to deliver co…

Methods that move towards less supervised scenarios are key for image segmentation, as dense labels demand significant human intervention. Generally, the annotation burden is mitigated by labeling datasets with weaker forms of supervision, e.g. image-level labels or bounding boxes. Another option are semi-supervised settings, that commonly leverage a few strong annotations and a huge number of unlabeled/weakly-labeled data. In this paper, we revisit semi-supervised segmentation schemes and narrow down significantly the annotation budget (in terms of total labeling time of the training set) com…
Generating precise class-aware pseudo ground-truths, a.k.a, class activation maps (CAMs), is essential for weakly-supervised semantic segmentation. The original CAM method usually produces incomplete and inaccurate localization maps. To tackle with this issue, this paper proposes an Expansion and Shrinkage scheme based on the offset learning in the deformable convolution, to sequentially improve the recall and precision of the located object in the two respective stages. In the Expansion stage, an offset learning branch in a deformable convolution layer, referred as "expansion sampler" seeks f…

Current 3D object detection methods heavily rely on an enormous amount of annotations. Semi-supervised learning can be used to alleviate this issue. Previous semi-supervised 3D object detection methods directly follow the practice of fully-supervised methods to augment labeled and unlabeled data, which is sub-optimal. In this paper, we design a data augmentation method for semi-supervised learning, which we call Semi-Sampling. Consistency regularization describes a class of approaches that have yielded ground breaking results in semi-supervised classification problems. Prior work has established the cluster assumption - under which the data distribution consists of uniform class clusters of samples separated by low density regions - as important to its success. We analyze the problem of semantic segmentation and find that its' distribution does not exhibit low density regions separating classes and offer this as an explanation for why semi-supervised segmentation is a challenging problem, with only a few reports of …
Consistency regularization describes a class of approaches that have yielded state-of-the-art results for semi-supervised classification. While semi-supervised semantic segmentation proved to be more challenging, a number of successful approaches have been recently proposed. Recent work explored the challenges involved in using consistency regularization for segmentation problems. In their self-supervised work Chen et al. found that colour augmentation prevents a classification network from using image colour statistics as a short-cut for self-supervised learning via instance discrimination. The costly process of obtaining semantic segmentation labels has driven research towards weakly supervised semantic segmentation (WSSS) methods, using only image-level, point, or box labels. The lack of dense scene representation requires methods to increase complexity to obtain additional semantic information about the scene, often done through multiple stages of training and refinement. Current state-of-the-art (SOTA) models leverage image-level labels to produce class activation maps (CAMs) which go through multiple stages of refinement before they are thresholded to make pseudo-masks for s…

Self-supervised learning (SSL) has been proved very effective at learning representations from unlabeled data in the image domain. However, few effective self-supervised approaches exist for 3D action recognition, and directly applying SSL for semi-supervised learning suffers from misalignment of representations learned from SSL and supervised learning tasks. The training of deep learning models generally requires a large amount of annotated data for effective convergence and generalisation. However, obtaining high-quality annotations is a laboursome and expensive process due to the need of expert radiologists for the labelling task. The study of semi-supervised learning in medical image analysis is then of crucial importance given that it is much less expensive to obtain unlabelled images than to acquire images labelled by expert radiologists. Essentially, semi-supervised methods leverage large sets of unlabelled data to enable better training con…
Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been successfully applied to solve the problem of correspondence estimation between semantically related images. Semi-supervised learning methods have achieved excellent performance on standard benchmark datasets using very few labelled images. Anatomy classification in fetal 2D ultrasound is an ideal problem setting to test whether these results translate to non-ideal data.
