We study a mean field game problem arising from the production control for multiple firms with price stickiness in the commodity market. The price dynamics for each firm is described as a (controlled) jump-diffusion process with mean-field interaction. Each firm aims to maximize her expectation of cumulative net profit coupled with each other through price processes. By solving the limiting control problem and a fixed-point problem, we construct an explicit approximating Nash equilibrium when the number of firms grows large.
This paper presents an application of mean field control to dynamic production optimization. Both noncooperative and cooperative solutions are considered. We first introduce a market of a large number of agents (firms) with sticky prices and adjustment costs. By solving auxiliary limiting optimal control problems subject to consistent mean field approximations, two sets of decentralized strategies are obtained and further shown to asymptotically attain Nash equilibria and social optima, respectively. The performance estimate of the social optimum strategies exploits a passivity property of the…
In this paper, we aim to design a distributed approximate algorithm for seeking Nash equilibria of an aggregative game. Due to the local set constraints of each player, projectionbased algorithms have been widely employed for solving such problems actually. Since it may be quite hard to get the exact projection in practice, we utilize inscribed polyhedrons to approximate local set constraints, which yields a related approximate game model. We first prove that the Nash equilibrium of the approximate game is the $ε$-Nash equilibrium of the original game, and then propose a distributed algorithm …
We consider a class of N-player stochastic games of multi-dimensional singular control, in which each player faces a minimization problem of monotone-follower type with submodular costs. We call these games "monotone-follower games". In a not necessarily Markovian setting, we establish the existence of Nash equilibria. Moreover, we introduce a sequence of approximating games by restricting, for each natural number n, the players' admissible strategies to the set of Lipschitz processes with Lipschitz constant bounded by n. We prove that, for each n, there exists a Nash equilibrium of the approx…
This paper studies the problem of Nash equilibrium approximation in large-scale heterogeneous mean-field games under communication and computation constraints. A deterministic mean-field game is considered in which the non-linear utility function of each agent depends on its action, the average of other agents' actions (called the mean variable of that agent) and a deterministic parameter. It is shown that the equilibrium mean variables of all agents converge uniformly to a constant, called asymptotic equilibrium mean (AEM), as the number of agents tends to infinity. The AEM, which depends on …

We consider the problem of approximating maximum Nash social welfare (NSW) while allocating a set of indivisible items to $n$ agents. The NSW is a popular objective that provides a balanced tradeoff between the often conflicting requirements of fairness and efficiency, defined as the weighted geometric mean of agents' valuations. For the symmetric additive case of the problem, where agents have the same weight with additive valuations, the first constant-factor approximation algorithm was obtained in 2015. This led to a flurry of work obtaining constant-factor approximation algorithms for the …
We consider the problem of approximating Nash equilibria of $N$ functions $f_1,\dots, f_N$ of $N$ variables. In particular, we deduce conditions under which systems of the form $$ \dot u_j(t)=-\nabla_{x_j}f_j(u(t)) $$ $(j=1,\dots, N)$ are well posed and in which the large time limits of their solutions $u(t)=(u_1(t),\dots, u_N(t))$ are Nash equilibria for $f_1,\dots, f_N$. To this end, we will invoke the theory of maximal monotone operators. We will also identify an application of these ideas in game theory and show how to approximate equilibria in some game theoretic problems in function spac…
We consider the basic problem of approximating Nash equilibria in noncooperative games. For monotone games, we design continuous time flows which converge in an averaged sense to Nash equilibria. We also study mean field equilibria, which arise in the large player limit of symmetric noncooperative games. In this setting, we will additionally show that the approximation of mean field equilibria is possible under a suitable monotonicity hypothesis.
We investigate mean field games for players, who are weakly coupled via their empirical measure. To this end we investigate time-dependent pure jump type propagators over a finite space in the framework of non-linear Markov processes. We show that the individual optimal strategy results from a consistent coupling of an optimal control problem with a forward non-autonomous dynamics which leads to the well-known Mckean-Vlasov dynamics in the limit as the number N of players goes to infinity. The case where one player has an individual preference different to the ones of the remaining players is …
Successful algorithms have been developed for computing Nash equilibrium in a variety of finite game classes. However, solving continuous games -- in which the pure strategy space is (potentially uncountably) infinite -- is far more challenging. Nonetheless, many real-world domains have continuous action spaces, e.g., where actions refer to an amount of time, money, or other resource that is naturally modeled as being real-valued as opposed to integral. We present a new algorithm for {approximating} Nash equilibrium strategies in continuous games. In addition to two-player zero-sum games, our …

We consider learning approximate Nash equilibria for discrete-time mean-field games with nonlinear stochastic state dynamics subject to both average and discounted costs. To this end, we introduce a mean-field equilibrium (MFE) operator, whose fixed point is a mean-field equilibrium (i.e. equilibrium in the infinite population limit). We first prove that this operator is a contraction, and propose a learning algorithm to compute an approximate mean-field equilibrium by approximating the MFE operator with a random one. Moreover, using the contraction property of the MFE operator, we establish t…
This paper studies the optimal extraction policy of an oil field as well as the efficient taxation of the revenues generated. Taking into account the fact that the oil price in worldwide commodity markets fluctuates randomly following global and seasonal macroeconomic parameters, we model the evolution of the oil price as a mean reverting regime-switching jump diffusion process. Given that oil producing countries rely on oil sale revenues as well as taxes levied on oil companies for a good portion of the revenue side of their budgets, we formulate this problem as a differential game where the …

We formulate for the first time the economic dispatch problem in an integrated electrical and gas distribution system as a game equilibrium problem between distributed prosumers. Specifically, by approximating the non-linear gas-flow equations either with a mixed-integer second order cone or a piece-wise affine model and by assuming that electricity and gas prices depend linearly on the total consumption we obtain a potential mixed-integer game. To compute an approximate generalized Nash equilibrium, we propose an iterative two-stage method that exploits a problem convexification and the gas f…

Mean Field Games (MFGs) can potentially scale multi-agent systems to extremely large populations of agents. Yet, most of the literature assumes a single initial distribution for the agents, which limits the practical applications of MFGs. Machine Learning has the potential to solve a wider diversity of MFG problems thanks to generalizations capacities. We study how to leverage these generalization properties to learn policies enabling a typical agent to behave optimally against any population distribution. In reference to the Master equation in MFGs, we coin the term ``Master policies'' to des…
The classical setting of optimal control theory assumes full knowledge of the process dynamics and the costs associated with every control strategy. The problem becomes much harder if the controller only knows a finite set of possible running cost functions, but has no way of checking which of these running costs is actually in place. In this paper we address this challenge for a class of evasive path planning problems on a continuous domain, in which an Evader needs to reach a target while minimizing his exposure to an enemy Observer, who is in turn selecting from a finite set of known survei…
