This paper presents an adversarial learning method for recognition-synthesis based non-parallel voice conversion. A recognizer is used to transform acoustic features into linguistic representations while a synthesizer recovers output features from the recognizer outputs together with the speaker identity. By separating the speaker characteristics from the linguistic representations, voice conversion can be achieved by replacing the speaker identity with the target one. In our proposed method, a speaker adversarial loss is adopted in order to obtain speaker-independent linguistic representation…

Traditional parametric coding of speech facilitates low rate but provides poor reconstruction quality because of the inadequacy of the model used. We describe how a WaveNet generative speech model can be used to generate high quality speech from the bit stream of a standard parametric coder operating at 2.4 kb/s. We compare this parametric coder with a waveform coder based on the same generative model and show that approximating the signal waveform incurs a large rate penalty. Our experiments confirm the high performance of the WaveNet based coder and show that the speech produced by the syste…

This paper proposes an any-to-many location-relative, sequence-to-sequence (seq2seq), non-parallel voice conversion approach, which utilizes text supervision during training. In this approach, we combine a bottle-neck feature extractor (BNE) with a seq2seq synthesis module. During the training stage, an encoder-decoder-based hybrid connectionist-temporal-classification-attention (CTC-attention) phoneme recognizer is trained, whose encoder has a bottle-neck layer. A BNE is obtained from the phoneme recognizer and is utilized to extract speaker-independent, dense and rich spoken content represen…
This paper proposes an interesting voice and accent joint conversion approach, which can convert an arbitrary source speaker's voice to a target speaker with non-native accent. This problem is challenging as each target speaker only has training data in native accent and we need to disentangle accent and speaker information in the conversion model training and re-combine them in the conversion stage. In our recognition-synthesis conversion framework, we manage to solve this problem by two proposed tricks. First, we use accent-dependent speech recognizers to obtain bottleneck features for diffe…
This paper addresses the formulation of a new speaker identification approach which employs knowledge of emotional content of speaker information. Our proposed approach in this work is based on a two-stage recognizer that combines and integrates both emotion recognizer and speaker recognizer into one recognizer. The proposed approach employs both Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) and Suprasegmental Hidden Markov Models (SPHMMs) as classifiers. In the experiments, six emotions are considered including neutral, angry, sad, happy, disgust and fear. Our results show that average speaker identification p…
Neural network-based vocoders have recently demonstrated the powerful ability to synthesize high-quality speech. These models usually generate samples by conditioning on spectral features, such as Mel-spectrogram and fundamental frequency, which is crucial to speech synthesis. However, the feature extraction procession tends to depend heavily on human knowledge resulting in a less expressive description of the origin audio. In this work, we proposed RawNet, a complete end-to-end neural vocoder following the auto-encoder structure for speaker-dependent and -independent speech synthesis. It auto…

Target-speaker speech recognition aims to recognize target-speaker speech from noisy environments with background noise and interfering speakers. This work presents a joint framework that combines time-domain target-speaker speech extraction and Recurrent Neural Network Transducer (RNN-T). To stabilize the joint-training, we propose a multi-stage training strategy that pre-trains and fine-tunes each module in the system before joint-training. Meanwhile, speaker identity and speech enhancement uncertainty measures are proposed to compensate for residual noise and artifacts from the target speec…
Recent success of the Tacotron speech synthesis architecture and its variants in producing natural sounding multi-speaker synthesized speech has raised the exciting possibility of replacing expensive, manually transcribed, domain-specific, human speech that is used to train speech recognizers. The multi-speaker speech synthesis architecture can learn latent embedding spaces of prosody, speaker and style variations derived from input acoustic representations thereby allowing for manipulation of the synthesized speech. In this paper, we evaluate the feasibility of enhancing speech recognition pe…
Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) has already been applied to learn speaker characterizations from single or non-simultaneous speech for speaker recognition applications. It is also known for its good performance in (blind) source separation for simultaneous speech. This paper explains how NMF can be used to jointly solve the two problems in a multichannel speaker recognizer for simultaneous speech. It is shown how state-of-the-art multichannel NMF for blind source separation can be easily extended to incorporate speaker recognition. Experiments on the CHiME corpus show that this method …
We describe Parrotron, an end-to-end-trained speech-to-speech conversion model that maps an input spectrogram directly to another spectrogram, without utilizing any intermediate discrete representation. The network is composed of an encoder, spectrogram and phoneme decoders, followed by a vocoder to synthesize a time-domain waveform. We demonstrate that this model can be trained to normalize speech from any speaker regardless of accent, prosody, and background noise, into the voice of a single canonical target speaker with a fixed accent and consistent articulation and prosody. We further show…

Sharing real-world speech utterances is key to the training and deployment of voice-based services. However, it also raises privacy risks as speech contains a wealth of personal data. Speaker anonymization aims to remove speaker information from a speech utterance while leaving its linguistic and prosodic attributes intact. State-of-the-art techniques operate by disentangling the speaker information (represented via a speaker embedding) from these attributes and re-synthesizing speech based on the speaker embedding of another speaker. Prior research in the privacy community has shown that anon…
Most approaches to multi-talker overlapped speech separation and recognition assume that the number of simultaneously active speakers is given, but in realistic situations, it is typically unknown. To cope with this, we extend an iterative speech extraction system with mechanisms to count the number of sources and combine it with a single-talker speech recognizer to form the first end-to-end multi-talker automatic speech recognition system for an unknown number of active speakers. Our experiments show very promising performance in counting accuracy, source separation and speech recognition on …

In this work, a Bayesian approach to speaker normalization is proposed to compensate for the degradation in performance of a speaker independent speech recognition system. The speaker normalization method proposed herein uses the technique of vocal tract length normalization (VTLN). The VTLN parameters are estimated using a novel Bayesian approach which utilizes the Gibbs sampler, a special type of Markov Chain Monte Carlo method. Additionally the hyperparameters are estimated using maximum likelihood approach. This model is used assuming that human vocal tract can be modeled as a tube of unif…

The rising interest in single-channel multi-speaker speech separation sparked development of End-to-End (E2E) approaches to multi-speaker speech recognition. However, up until now, state-of-the-art neural network-based time domain source separation has not yet been combined with E2E speech recognition. We here demonstrate how to combine a separation module based on a Convolutional Time domain Audio Separation Network (Conv-TasNet) with an E2E speech recognizer and how to train such a model jointly by distributing it over multiple GPUs or by approximating truncated back-propagation for the conv…

An efficient speech to text converter for mobile application is presented in this work. The prime motive is to formulate a system which would give optimum performance in terms of complexity, accuracy, delay and memory requirements for mobile environment. The speech to text converter consists of two stages namely front-end analysis and pattern recognition. The front end analysis involves preprocessing and feature extraction. The traditional voice activity detection algorithms which track only energy cannot successfully identify potential speech from input because the unwanted part of the speech…
