Various emotions can produce variations in electrocardiograph (ECG) signals, distinct emotions can be distinguished by different changes in ECG signals. This study is about emotion recognition using ECG signals. Data for four emotions, namely happy, exciting, calm, and tense, is gathered. The raw data is then de-noised with a finite impulse filter. We use the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) to extract characteristics from the obtained data to increase the accuracy of emotion recognition. The classifiers Support Vector Machine (SVM), Random Forest, and K-NN are explored. To find the optimal parameters for the SVM classifier, the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) technique is used. The results of the comparison of these classification methods demonstrate that the SVM approach has a greater accuracy in emotion recognition, which may be applied in practice
We exploit a self-supervised deep multi-task learning framework for electrocardiogram (ECG) -based emotion recognition. The proposed solution consists of two stages of learning a) learning ECG representations and b) learning to classify emotions. ECG representations are learned by a signal transformation recognition network. The network learns high-level abstract representations from unlabeled ECG data. Six different signal transformations are applied to the ECG signals, and transformation recognition is performed as pretext tasks. Training the model on pretext tasks helps the network learn sp…
We present an electrocardiogram (ECG) -based emotion recognition system using self-supervised learning. Our proposed architecture consists of two main networks, a signal transformation recognition network and an emotion recognition network. First, unlabelled data are used to successfully train the former network to detect specific pre-determined signal transformations in the self-supervised learning step. Next, the weights of the convolutional layers of this network are transferred to the emotion recognition network, and two dense layers are trained in order to classify arousal and valence sco…
Biometric authentication relies on an individual's physiological or behavioral traits to verify their identity before granting access permission to a system or device without remembering anything. Although electrocardiograms (ECGs) have been considered a biometric trait, an ECG biometric recognition system that operates in verification mode is rarely considered. This study proposes two two-factor cancelable biometric verification schemes that enable identity recognition using ECGs. Using bioconvolving and minimum average correlation energy biometric filters, revocable and irreversible template…
In order to exploit representations of time-series signals, such as physiological signals, it is essential that these representations capture relevant information from the whole signal. In this work, we propose to use a Transformer-based model to process electrocardiograms (ECG) for emotion recognition. Attention mechanisms of the Transformer can be used to build contextualized representations for a signal, giving more importance to relevant parts. These representations may then be processed with a fully-connected network to predict emotions. To overcome the relatively small size of datasets w…
We describe techniques and specifications of MATLAB software to process ambulatory electrocardiogram (ECG) data. Through template-based beat identification and simple pattern recognition models on the intervals between regular heart beats, we filter noisy sections of waveform and ectopic beats. Our end-to-end process can be used towards analysis of ECG and calculation of heart rate variability metrics after beat adjustments, removals and interpolation. Classification and noise detection is assessed on the human-annotated MIT-BIH Arrythmia and Noise Stress Test Databases.

Classification of human emotions can play an essential role in the design and improvement of human-machine systems. While individual biological signals such as Electrocardiogram (ECG) and Electrodermal Activity (EDA) have been widely used for emotion recognition with machine learning methods, multimodal approaches generally fuse extracted features or final classification/regression results to boost performance. To enhance multimodal learning, we present a novel attentive cross-modal connection to share information between convolutional neural networks responsible for learning individual modali…
Emotion recognition or detection is broadly utilized in patient-doctor interactions for diseases such as schizophrenia and autism and the most typical techniques are speech detection and facial recognition. However, features extracted from these behavior-based emotion recognitions are not reliable since humans can disguise their emotions. Recording voices or tracking facial expressions for a long term is also not efficient. Therefore, our aim is to find a reliable and efficient emotion recognition scheme, which can be used for non-behavior-based emotion recognition in real-time. This can be so…

Couples generally manage chronic diseases together and the management takes an emotional toll on both patients and their romantic partners. Consequently, recognizing the emotions of each partner in daily life could provide an insight into their emotional well-being in chronic disease management. The emotions of partners are currently inferred in the lab and daily life using self-reports which are not practical for continuous emotion assessment or observer reports which are manual, time-intensive, and costly. Currently, there exists no comprehensive overview of works on emotion recognition amon…
In this paper, we address the problem of multimodal emotion recognition from multiple physiological signals. We demonstrate that a Transformer-based approach is suitable for this task. In addition, we present how such models may be pretrained in a multimodal scenario to improve emotion recognition performances. We evaluate the benefits of using multimodal inputs and pre-training with our approach on a state-ofthe-art dataset.
EEG signals have been reported to be informative and reliable for emotion recognition in recent years. However, the inter-subject variability of emotion-related EEG signals still poses a great challenge for the practical applications of EEG-based emotion recognition. Inspired by recent neuroscience studies on inter-subject correlation, we proposed a Contrastive Learning method for Inter-Subject Alignment (CLISA) to tackle the cross-subject emotion recognition problem. Contrastive learning was employed to minimize the inter-subject differences by maximizing the similarity in EEG signal represen…

Robust speech emotion recognition relies on the quality of the speech features. We present speech features enhancement strategy that improves speech emotion recognition. We used the INTERSPEECH 2010 challenge feature-set. We identified subsets from the features set and applied Principle Component Analysis to the subsets. Finally, the features are fused horizontally. The resulting feature set is analyzed using t-distributed neighbour embeddings (t-SNE) before the application of features for emotion recognition. The method is compared with the state-of-the-art methods used in the literature. The…
